Ever since I saw this random TV program about some guy arguing that the vaguest examples of a robot were considered life, I've always wanted to build one XD. The thing he constructed was interesting in that it was essentially a circuit board, a photo receptor, and a rotating wire/paper clipish thing. He said it could be classified as life because it would seek out light to remain active (because of the way he had it set up). At least, that's all I can remember about it. This is not a place to argue the validity of his claim, but how to construct something analogous to what he made. I think it would be cool to have several of these little bastards running around . Anyone with any technical knowledge that could help me out? I figured I'd look up most of what I need to make these things by raiding my college bookstore. But, I'll take any foreknowledge I can. My current method was gonna be a haphazard frankensteining of old electrical bits and things from some kind of component store (photoreceptors, resistors, and whatever). |

This is now the place to argue the validity of the above cited's bullshit claim. This I decree and thus it is so. |

regardless, I simply don't care whether it's life or not. I was looking for advice on how to build something that acts like it's alive by doing things like running away when it hears something or going towards a bright light source to keep functioning or simple stuff. The show was on so long ago that I'm probably remembering it wrong anyway. |

i dont know much about hardware engineering, so youre utterly on your own there, but ive taken a class in AI, although it was more of a problem solving using AI prinicples thing, nonetheless, i may be some help along those lines. |

I took an electronics class a long time ago, so i have a (very) basic idea about how to wire things together. AI would be an interesting accomplishment, but i don't think I'm up to something quite that advanced. If programming does become involved, it'll be simple. i.e. "if you hit a wall, turn and move until you're not hitting a wall". my main goal is to make something that requires very little intervening as soon as i turn it on, even if it's as simple as a two wheeled square that I set on a desktop that moves toward light then stops, continually searching for light until it finds it. Things will probably evolve from something basic like that. and I'll have my own phylogeny of robots that evolve from previous models to encompass new adaptations until i get the one that I turn on and let go. |

even getting it to search out light would be difficult, i imagine. for instance, how do you get it to turn towards light sources? how does it know how to move? |

Reacting to light isn't difficult. I was in a club in middle school that built robots with legos as the non-computer hardware. There was a sensor that came with the kit that measured light. |

may have to get a cheap programming software, but I have no idea how to program any components yet. |

measuring light isnt the difficulty, but reacting to it? of course if the hardware to deal with that is readily available, then no problem |

The sensor measured light. You could program it to react to it. I think the programming was C or C+. |

i remember doing something similar. we had a two day program at my middle school where you got to screw around with programmable lego bot things. you had to make them do things like rescue a lego man or follow a pattern XD. It might be wise to get that program ad just solder the machine pieces to other stuff. |

pattern following isnt interesting, but reacting to light is. also obstacle avoidance might be difficult |

Not difficult at all. It had a bumper mechanism. If the bumper mechanism triggered the computer would know it hit a wall and react. |

maybe a switch system? like a bumper at the front of the bot that forces it to move in a different direction? that certainly would be difficult without an actual way to program the thing. edit: ninja'd |

maybe on reacting to light, a series of photo receptors could serve as a sort of all around vision and whatever the moving mechanism is moves in the direction with the most light. |
