Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3); Moleland does an honest review

I thought I'd do this for my own entertainment. Questions are welcome.

I have only played the PS3 version but I assume the Xbox 360 version is the same or similar

The game is set in a place called Soleanna. You can play as 1 of 3 characters - Sonic, Shadow or Silver. Shadow and silver are only unlocked after playing the Sonic story past a certain point. Each 3 characters have their own story that 'collide' with another characters occasionally. To avoid plot spoilers, I won't go into anymore details

Review

The controls are easily learnt and are 'tight'. The old homing attack is back with both Shadow and Sonic but it doesn't 'kill' you anymore, nor is so easy to massacre enemies with it. Silver uses psychokinetic powers to throw objects at enemies. Once you get the hang of it, is fun.

The storyline is EXCELLANT! It had many twists and turns and it made sense to be running around smashing stuff. The animation on the cutscenes is excellant, and looked very real! Also, duing each characters story, you will play as 'sub characters' for parts of levels or the whole level sometimes.

Posted Image

However, it is not all praise. The human models in-game suck. Also, between each 'level' are town stages which link them. You have solve the puzzle or learn a new move to make progress. I disliked the adventure field in Sonic adventure and I dislike in this game. Too much time wasted running around confused as how to proceed.

Posted Image

To learn new moves you need to 'buy' new moves from shops. You collect rings based on how well you complete levels and rings you have at the end of the level. You can earn additional rings by completing missions BUT OMFG THEY SUCK!!!!! They are easy, boring and repetitive. Also when you accept a mission, you have wait 10 - 20 secs for it to load only to have the person describe the mission in more detail before you have to wait 10 - 20 secs before you actually start! Should by misfortune fail the mission you have wait 10 - 20 secs for the mission character to give you a 'YOU SUCK' messege... and then you have to start all over again! arrraggfgggfgh!!!!

The good news is, most of these town missions are optional, and unless you really suck, you should earn enough rings from regular levels :)

The in game sounds are what you expect. The voice acting is good and the in-game sound affects are what you expect. The music is passible, although nothing in it to write home about.

The levels are interrupted by the occasional loading screen of 10 - 20 secs, but these are accepted as the levels are excellant. The camara does get stuck ocassionally, but during the entire game, it only 'killed' me twice so it is no biggy.

Summary

+

- Excellant levels
- Excellant cutscenes
- Excellant story lines

-

- Loading screens (Too long and often)
- Town missions and town levels too boring
- Occasional Camara issues

RATING: 8 out of 10

If you can see past the flaws of this game, you will find many hours of quality entertainment. I recommend you buy it :)

What are you, SSA's resident Necromancer?

That's my job.
There once was a poster called SoG
about as substantial as fog
he would gleefully beam
while the others did scream
