am a Bengali tigress, says Rani
By Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Staff Reporter
Published: September 19, 2009, 22:42

She's slimmer and fiercer than ever. But can Dil Bole Hadippa revive Rani Mukherjee's career? She tells tabloid! it can.

The trailers of Dil Bole Hadippa (DBH) - Rani Mukherjee's latest film - show her as a village belle atop a truck, ripping a sugar cane with her teeth and trying to impress a suave gentleman by breaking into uncouth English. She is unapologetic about it and is undeterred when the hero (Shahid Kapur) compares her coltish attempts to a buffalo. Step off the reel and Mukherjee is equally feisty - despite her career nose-diving in the last two years. Her last two works, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007) and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008) were universally panned and she found herself at the bottom of the A-lister heap. But DBH - she believes - will resurrect her career. Her message to her detractors is loud and clear.

"I am a Bengali tigress and nothing or no one can bog me down. Whenever people - especially the media - pull me down, I think of my fans who have showered me with so much love and affection. Yes, I know I have to bounce back and I am certain I will," says Mukherjee over the phone from Mumbai.

In her latest, the award-wining actress plays a rural Indian girl who masquerades as a boy to enter the Indian cricket team. The movie is set in a quaint place in Punjab where the gender divide is pronounced and sporty girls are frowned on.

With DBH touted as her comeback role, Mukherjee even learnt to pick up a bat and also shed a few kilos in the process. Known for her dramatic roles in Bollywood musicals such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Mukherjee is not exactly B-town's Serena Williams.

"I knew what a sixer was! But that's about it. A few months ago, I could not tell the difference between an LBW [leg before wicket] and a googly [a kind of ball delivery]. But all that has changed. And I also knew I had to look athletic for this role. So I had to give up sweets, oily and fried food."

The abstinence she could digest, but she could not live with the vile rumours that have been doing the rounds. Her dry spell was littered with some interesting reports. Many suggested that Mukherjee was getting desperate for a box-office hit and had even considered moving out of her recently purchased palatial house in Mumbai because she found it inauspicious. According to Indian beliefs, certain homes can be a harbinger of bad luck. But Mukherjee merely pins it to down to a conspiracy theory.

"Some people are just jealous of me or my success and they are the ones who keep saying such nonsense about me. I have a beautiful home and I love living in it. The house has been done up to my taste with such great care, so why would I ever move?" Her advancing age is another sore point with the actress.

"I am just 30 and I started working at the age of 17. So naturally, my contemporaries - whom I was compared to - were at least five years older than me. I still have a long way to go, and ideally I want Dil Bole to be my turning point."

Apart from paranormal rumours, Mukherjee also has to make peace with a more-life like figure. Dil Bole Hadippa - a Yash Raj production - clashes with another release, Wanted. The latter features Bollywood A-lister Salman Khan at the helm. Like Mukherjee, he too hopes that Wanted will give him a career boost.

"Salman is my dear friend and to be honest, I am a bit scared. But Salman and I don't take decisions about when our movies should release. In this case, Aditya Chopra [DBH producer] and Boney Kapoor [Wanted producer] decided that our movies should release together. It's not in our hands."

But this is a minor stumbling block. The Yash Raj release has struck a casting coup of sorts. For the first time, Shahid Kapur - who had recently scored a century with his dark comedy Kaminey - will be playing her love interest. Initially, the 28-year-old actor too had his doubts.

"In the beginning, both of us were wary about how we would look together on the screen. But after a few scenes, we actually looked at each and said 'Wow, we actually look good and we make sense," says Kapur over the phone from Mumbai.

Mukherjee's confidence may have received a blow in the last two years, but her barrels are loaded now. Even though the media - she claims - was quick to indulge in Rani-bashing, her fans were not as cynical.

"Whenever my films do not do well, what makes me sad is the realisation that so many of my die-hard fans have not seen my movie or my efforts." But DBH, she believes, is flop-proof.

"There's no way Dil Bole Hadippa will not do well. It's a masala movie which has songs, colour, emotions and masti [fun] at its core."

I wanted to be 'very thin': Rani

The Hadippa girl reveals the reason behind her transformation

By IANS . Sep 18, 2009

She was not a cricket fanatic but after preparing for her role in the just released Dil Bole Hadippa!, Rani Mukerji has become a huge fan of the game. She not only wishes to go and watch it in the stadium, but also suggests that more girls should try their hand at the sport.

"It's a great sport to play... people say it's a gentleman's game but it is a ladies' game too because it is a lot of fun. I would in fact tell a lot of girls to try their hand in cricket," said Rani.

"I would also love to go and see a game now in the stadium because watching it there is much more exciting than watching it on TV. Now that I know the game, it's become pretty interesting for me to watch. Now I know there are so many ways to get out in the game other than what I knew of just a run out or a catch out.

"I wasn't into cricket at all. I would rarely watch a match if it was a very interesting one as I wasn't really educated in the game. When you don't know much about the game, you can't enjoy it," Rani said.

She dons the garb of a Sikh in the romantic comedy to highlight a woman's aspirations for cricket. Playing the part involved "rigorous training sessions" for Rani.

"I trained for six months in cricket and tried to learn it to the best of my ability because it was important for my character to know the game very well. I didn't even know how to hold the bat correctly. So for me, to start from there to hit the shot was satisfying.

"I wanted to start shooting for the film after I had trained for the game. I took training from a lady called Anjali who has been a cricketer for the Indian women's team and has played in the world cup also," she said.

Produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films, Dil Bole Hadippa! has been directed by debutant Anurag Singh. The movie was premiered at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) recently.

It also stars Shahid Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil and item girls Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn Chopra.

The 31-year-old Rani also underwent a strict "weight training and yoga" regime to "tone" up her body for the character in tandem with her cricket lessons.

"I started losing weight because I wanted to look like a cricketer in the movie - very athletic and very thin. I really worked hard to change the structure of my body. I did a lot of yoga and weight training.

"It took me around eight months to tone up my body and after that I took weight training to tone specific part of my body. So it took me about a year in total to prepare myself," she explained.

Rani was last seen in cameos in Luck By Chance (2009) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), after a full-length role in Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic (2008).

Asked what was keeping the actress busy all this while, she said, "The only thing that was keeping me busy was this film and the rest of the time I was spending with my niece Mysha. That's been my life pretty much since last year."

Rani's future projects include a voiceover for animated movie Koochie Koochie Hota Ha

Saw the box office reports on TV.  It said the movie is doing exceeding well all over India (along with Wanted).

Rock steady business in multiplexes and decent collections in single screens with family audience pouring in.

The much awaited overseas box office report is yet to come !!!

It would be very easy for DBH to become a success thanks to its low cost !

Plus, the majority of business is coming from multiplexes where the ticket price is higher and distributor's share is much less.

Also, Yashraj has targeted the international market in a big way and hey are distributing the film themselves abroad.

The extended weekend will do more good only!!!

The New York Times says Hadippa for Rani
By Stacey Yount - BollySpice.com
20 Sep 2009

Yash Raj Films' Dil Bole Hadippa starring Rani Mukherjee and Shahid Kapoor opened in theaters on Friday to immense expectation. While the film's story is getting mixed reviews, the gorgeous Rani is getting raves for her performance as Veera and Veer.

In fact, the esteemed New York Times has a review of DBH and Rachel Saltz wrote, "Directed by Anurag Singh, "Dil" takes place in a colorful Punjab, with amber waves of grain and sassy local girls who chomp on sugar cane. It's a fantasy of the Indian heartland, a perfect setting for splashy musical numbers and an appropriate one for a film that itself is fantasy: part sports tale, part nationalist love story, part feminist comedy."

Saltz has nothing but praise for the star in her double role, "Ms. Mukherjee's enthusiasm is catchy, and when Veera delivers a feminist speech at the end, she's moving, too."

Adding, "Ms. Mukherjee seems to be having the time of her life as Veer/Veera."

Our esteemed reviewer Roshni Mulchandani said to watch the film just for Rani, "Performance wise, Rani Mukherjee is back and how. Not only does she look incredible but manages to hold the entire film together. Whether it's Veera or Veer, she does justice to her film."

On her popular blog, Filmi Girl applauded the film and especially Rani's performance writing, "Rani Mukerji cranks up the charisma to 11 and twinkles her way into our hearts. She anchors almost every frame of DBH and make no mistake, this is her film. The RANI is back!"

Seems Rani is the queen of DBH - if you will forgive the pun! To see if you agree, catch Dil Bole Hadippa in theaters now!

Rani has had enough of marriage rumours

Rani Mukherji, who reigned as the Bollywood queen years ago, hopes to reclaim her throne with her latest offering — Dil Bole Hadippa! And while a lot has changed, she confesses she still feels the same anxiousness before a release like she used to.

“Because my last 2-3 films have not done well, there is a sense of disappointment that I failed to entertain my audience. I don’t want people to come out of the theatres saying, ‘We didn’t like her work’. It’s very important for me to see what the audience thinks of my work,” she says.

Another thing that, she rues, hasn’t changed is having to face recurring reports of her link-up with director Aditya Chopra.

“For people to doubt my intelligence and the way I’ve been brought up, and paint a picture that Rani Mukherji is a person who will hide her marriage is completely ridiculous and stupid. Why would someone like me, who is educated and is an independent woman, want to hide her marriage only because she’s an actress?” she questions.

But then why does she stick to the Yash Raj banner even though it just adds fire to the rumours? “There are so many actors who are associated with so many banners, but just because they are men, they aren’t linked up. Emraan Hashmi always works with Mukeshji [Mukesh Bhatt] because he’s the nephew, Shah Rukh works with Karan Johar… there is just a comfort level you have with a banner. I will associate myself with Yash Raj and will continue to since Adi [Aditya Chopra] and Yash uncle [Yash Raj] have supported me unconditionally,” she concludes.

Why DIL BOLE HADIPPA is a safe bet for Yash Raj!

September 21, 2009 12:28:40 PM IST
Abid, Bollywood Trade News Network

It is by now clear that the Eid battle between WANTED and DIL BOLE HADIPPA is slowly but surely moving in favour of the Boney Kapoor produced WANTED. While DIL BOLE HADIPPA is having an edge in the multiplexes of North India (Delhi-NCR and East Punjab), at an all India level, it is WANTED that is being lapped up, more so at mass oriented centres.

However, it is not over by any means for DIL BOLE HADIPPA, as it's quite a low budget of 14-15 crore will ensure that the Rani-Shahid starrer is sure to be a profitable venture for Yash Raj Films, who are also the worldwide distributors. In the Overseas, the film is not exactly setting the box-office on fire, but is fairing much better than the Salman-Ayesha starrer, WANTED.

In a nutshell, while DIL BOLE HADIPPA will be a safe bet for its makers, by the second weekend, the 34-35 crore WANTED will need to do much more than a couple of weeks run to become a plus fare!

12 Crore Nett Weekend For Dil Bole Hadippa

Monday 21st September 2009 10.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

http://boxofficeindia.com/npages.php?page=...=1141&nCat=news

Dil Bole Hadippa grossed a decent 12 crore nett over its first weekend. The film performed well at multiplexes especially in the Delhi/NCR area while most single screens had low collections. There is a holiday for Eid on Monday which should help weekday collections and the first week may finish around 20 crore nett.

The biggest advantage the film has its very reasonable costs. The total investment in the film by Yashraj Films is around 25 crore and it seems like at that Dil Bole Hadippa will generate revenue of 30-35 crore from all sources or even more if it can sustain at the box office in the coming days.

Dil Bole Haddipa's disheartening openingMonday, September 21, 2009, 14:31 [IST] By Raymond Ronamai

Everything around the much-hyped film Dil Bole Hadippa looked fine till it hit the theatres. Surprisingly, this Rani Mukherjee's comeback film had a disheartening opening.

Buzz up!Going by the publicity and the good reviews it got, people in the trade circle expected Dil Bole Hadippa to rock on the opening day. However, it is reported that it managed to get only 45-60 percent occupancy on the average in multiplexes.
Advance booking for the film was also weak.

Meanwhile, FUN Cinemas is said to have a wonderful opening. It experienced 100% per cent occupancies in their Chandigarh and Ahemdabad chains for the first two shows
while Mumbai had an average occupancy of about 50 per cent.

In spite of the weak opening, Dil Bole Hadippa is expected to pick up in the days to come with good word of mouth.
Rani Mukherjee acts with Shahid Kapoor in this film produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Anurag Basu.

Wait for a couple days to know the final verdict!

'You cannot take risks playing a cricketer'

http://movies.rediff.com/slide-show/2009/s...ani-mukerji.htm

Rani Mukerji was walking on the red carpet, waving at her fans, who were cheering lustily, Rani, We love you, when a reporter told her about an observation her father Ram Mukerji had made over three decades ago.

"Your father had said a director can get enormous satisfaction when he challenges an artist by giving him or her an image-breaking role," the reporter said.

"You have met my father," said Rani, who was in Toronto for the gala world premiere of the comedy Dil Bole Hadippa!, her eyes sparkling.

"He had said how he had summoned the courage to offer a comedy role to an actor famous for his tragic roles," the reporter said.

"Ah, Dilip Kumar," she said. The film, Leader, starred Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala, and remains the only feature film directed by Rani's father.

"In what way did Anurag Singh [the director of Hadippa] challenge you?"

"He had a detailed script and he wanted us to enjoy doing every scene but it wasn't by any means easy. This is a masala film and yet he wanted it to be far above the standard masala movies."

She plays in the movie a cricket crazy Veera who goes around as a man (Veer) because the community does not sanction women playing the game.

Her co-star Shahid Kapoor (Rohan in the movie) has said that he was utterly delighted when he heard that he was cast opposite Rani but had a jolt when he realised that she was playing a man for a good part of the film.

"I had to make sure that though this is a masala film, I had to be credible in whatever I did," she said. She has said that she worked hard thinking and walking like a man for several weeks but learning to play cricket was the toughest challenge.

"You cannot take risks playing a cricketer," she said.

Audiences in India, and many other countries including Trinidad and Guyana took cricket seriously, she added.

"I trained myself for six to eight months [in Mumbai] making sure that I will be convincing as a cricket player. It is true that we work hard in any film but in some films, you have no choice but to work harder."

Her box-office track hasn't been successful in about two years but Hadippa could put her back in the limelight. Reviewers have praised her work, and in Toronto, her name on the screen received prolonged cheers. Shahid was promoting the film in India, and director Singh walked with Rani on the red carpet.

"Shahid is terrific in the film," he said. "But Rani is something else. Together they have made more magic on the screen than I could have ever imagined."

The New York Times noticed the film too, and particularly Rani's performance. 'While Mr Singh plays Veera's drag more for laughs than for any sexual tension it might produce (Rohan never feels drawn to Veer, as he might in a Sheakespeare play),' The Times wrote, Ms Mukherjee seems to be having the time of her life as Veer/Veera.'

The movie might seem formulaic at times, reviewer Rachel Saltz added, in her story titled, Cross-Dressing to Go to Bat for India and for Love, Too.

'But as often happens in Bollywood, stars easily trump formula. Ms Mukherjee's enthusiasm is catchy, and when Veera delivers a feminist speech at the end, she's moving, too'

Rani said in Toronto that she had a great time working with Shahid. "He is relaxed and helps everyone around him relax too," she said.

How was it to work with a comparatively new director?

"He [Singh] seldom makes you aware of the fact that you are working in a big film," she said laughing.

"At the end of each shot, at least in the beginning of our work, I would ask him, Is the shot okay? Are you satisfied? And he would look at me with a smile and say, Why do you think I signed you for our film?"

Rani’s rocking Eid feast with ZOOM!
TNN 22 September 2009, 12:04am IST

Rani Mukerji rocks. That’s pretty evident from her latest in a long line-up of rocking performances in Dil Bole Hadippa. Rani Mukerji More Pics

But the newly-toned, slim, fit and hot actress rocked us off our feet at ZOOM, when she expressed a desire to celebrate Eid in the ‘real’ way — having biryani, falooda, phirni, sheer korma, kebabs and fruit platters along with the junta — at a popular joint. She chose a local eatery at Bandra, popular for its biryani, bang opposite the overcrowded Bandra station on the main road. It was a logistical nightmare, what with Eid, the Bandra fair and Navratris on simultaneously. The roads were jammed and traffic and security impossible to handle.

It was something never ever done by any TV channel before, with such a popular star. But ZOOM decided to fulfil her wish. With help from local police, huge support from friendly locals and the eatery’s owners, we pulled off the impossible. Rani actually hopped off her luxury Sedan and into the lucky joint as if it were a five-star. Then she went berserk.

The six months of a tough diet and workout regime forgotten, she dived into the food. Kebabs, curries, biryani and desserts. All at one go. “I used to order a lot from here and enjoy it. But I always wanted to come here. And nothing could have been better than inviting me to fulfil my dream, she told ZOOM — Editor-in-Chief, Omar Qureshi, over the feast.

Looking stunning in a blue salwar kameez, hair bunched neatly, her brown eyes alight at the sight of the feast; she was in such a fab mood that she mingled with all the other diners, much to their pleasant surprise, serving them and asking them if they’d caught her film. In fact, one lady cutely got up and hugged the lovely actress and she hugged her right back, even as the lady’s family applauded. Then she pulled in the ZOOM crew one by one, forcing them to eat.
Rani went on to tell us how she’s always enjoyed great food, especially on Eid.

“Considering my first producer was Salim Akhtar, my first heroes were Aamir and SRK, and I’ve worked so much with Salman; I always got to eat their Eid khaana. So I was craving again.”

Later Rani went out and waved to the hordes of thousands that had gathered and were patiently waiting for her, and a huge roar of ‘Hadippaaaaa’ went up. The actress was moved to tears, yet mingled with some, then when it got crazy, she was requested by security to jump into her car and God speed home.

But guess what... it was a Happy Eid for the charming actress, even as she prepared to leave for the Durga Pooja festivities in Kolkota the next morning.

Delhi bole Hadippa!
TNN 22 September 2009, 12:00am IST

When Shahid Kapur and Rani Mukerji recently came to the city for the film Dil Bole Hadippa, one thing they made sure was they weren’t held ransom to the media’s questions. In fact, they gave it back to the journos with a little bit of sarcasm and dollops of humour.

When Shahid was asked too many questions about Kaminey and he was talking about the transition from Kaminey to Dil Bole..., Rani suddenly interrupted with, “Hadippa!” He continued, so she said it again, and again, and finally said, “Arrey hero kitna achha lag raha hai, so lovely he’s looking, aap kuch kehte kyun nahin, say na!” The next question started with, “Rani ne abhi kaha iss film mein hero bahut achha lag raha hai ... ” “Achha nahin, handsome,” Rani corrected. “Iss film mein hero Rani aur Veer hain, main bas beech mein aata hoon aur chala jaata hoon,” said Shahid. “Yeh galat bol raha hai!” Rani said, slapping him playfully on the back. “Yeh mera hero hai, hero hai, hero hai!”

Throughout the interaction, people kept shouting ‘Rani, I love you!’ ‘Shahid, I love you!’ Shahid was asked, “Rani as a man or Rani as a woman?” “In the context of what?” he responded. “Itna general mat bolo yaar, thoda dangerous hota hai ... ” After things got quieter, someone said, “Both of you have been linked to a couple of people in the industry. What do you have to say about your chemistry?” Rani promptly put an arm through Shahid’s and said, “We are linked-up. See?” “Yes, yeh aaj ka hamara announcement hai. We are The Linked,” Shahid grinned. “We are The Linkeds in the movies!” Rani exclaimed.

‘Shahid was good fun’ : Rani Mukherjee

22 September 2009

With Dil Bole Hadippa! out in theatres, Rani speaks about her co-star Shahid and also clears up some controversies about the film

Tell us the reason for the glow on your face and your new svelte figure?

I think it’s all because of the movie. I did a lot of yoga and weight training as I play a cricketer in the movie.

It was very important that I look like a cricketer as it forms a major part of the movie. And obviously you do not want a sardar boy running with things jiggling on his body. So, I toned myself down to fit into the role of the movie.

And the glow on my face is due to the amazing journey I had through this film. I trained with Payal Gidwani who helped me with yoga and Satyajit Chaurasia.

You are the only co-star who hasn’t got linked to Shahid, why is that?

Shahid is lovely; a complete delight to work with. He has grown as an actor step-by-step. He was good fun because we got along really well. If we have not been linked yet, then do it now, what is the harm?

We heard that you are being wooed by Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn Chopra in the movie?

There is nothing like that, nobody is wooing me. It’s complete rubbish.

How is Rakhi Sawant as a co-star?

She is a darling, because she is very professional, very hard-working and it was lovely to work with her.

Is it true that you were not happy with Anurag Singh’s direction?

Absolutely not! It’s very bad when people start talking about my director like this. My director is the captain of the ship and he is a very important person in the entire unit. It’s his first movie; I urge the audience to give him blessings because he has made a great film and is a very sweet boy.

I feel really bad for him because he ends up asking us ‘why are these rumours being spread about me’?

Did you insist that Aditya Chopra direct a few portions of the movie?

Never. This is really bad, this is a dirty rumour.

Who is your favourite cricketer? What would you do if you were a real life cricketer?

Sachin Tendulkar. If I were a real life cricketer then I wouldn’t let India lose even one single match.

Shahid in Kaminey or Dil Bole Hadippa?

In Dil Bole Hadippa!

All time favourite YashRaj movie:

I just love Chandni starring Rishi Kapoor, Sridevi and Vinod Khanna.

Shahid’s role play

THOUGH PROMOS OF Dil Bole Hadippa centres around Rani Mukerji, giving an impression that the film mainly tells her story, Shahid Kapoor maintains that it’s not a woman-centric film.

“Honestly, I don’t think Dil Bole Hadippa is a woman-oriented subject. Of course, Rani has a very, very important role in the film and when you see it you will realise yourself how both of us actually fit into the storyline,” Shahid said.

The actor admits he had more of a chance to let down his hair during the shooting of Hadippa when compared to Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey.

“Seriously, Dil Bole Hadippa is so contrasting to Kaminey...in terms of genre, setting, performances, space, treatment and audiences. The film is very much in the space of the commercial genre. It is an entertainer with a Punjabi background to it. Playing Rohan was not as challenging as enacting the role of Charlie or Guddu. After a Dhan Te Nan, it was a lot of fun to be indulging in some ‘bhangra shangra’!” Shahid said.

Shahid, who will also be seen in Ken Ghosh’s Chance Pe Dance, is happy to be playing a young lover boy.

“By God’s grace I have been accepted by audiences in my romantic avtaar; so why let that go? A movie like Kaminey or a Dil Bole Hadippa only helps in making a contrast. Your value as an actor is realised due to the contrast you bring in,” he said.

“Now look at Jab We Met. I was an introvert there and the role was so different. Audiences gave me a thumbs up there and they did so for Kaminey as well. But, frankly, after a point in time I don’t want to start gauging audiences’ reaction too much. Instead I wish to follow my instincts and give them what I feel could be a real value addition,” Shahid said.

Doesn’t the actor in him now look out for only performance-based roles after Kaminey?

“Honestly, I would love to do different kind of films. I can’t be getting or doing Kaminey all the time. To even think in that direction would be unfair. After all such a role can come to any actor may be once in a couple of years,” Shahid said.

Back in the game

IF ANYONE DESERVES a hurrah after watching the latest Yash Raj offering Dil Bole Hadippa!, it is undoubtedly Rani Mukherjee. While Kareena Kapoor was garnering front page headlines for her ‘paratha and momos diet’ and Katrina Kaif was being touted as the next big thing in Bollywood courtesy her surprising National Award win, guess who was slowly making her comeback to the top? Die-hard fans of the Queen bee have been vilified and don’t you mind those naysayers who were only too eager to write her off – the Queen is back.

Anurag Singh’s directorial venture Dil Bole Hadippa! not only puts Ms Mukherjee back in the game, but provides an entertaining story to boot. Village belle, Veera Kaur (played with a lot of fanfare by the bubbly Rani Mukherjee looking absolutely amazing – if you overlook the heavy make-up) dreams of playing cricket with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Dhoni. When Vikram Singh (Anupam Kher) brings his London-based county cricket playing son Rohan (played by Shahid Kapoor who looks like a walking advertisement for a shampoo ad in most scenes, though in no way does it detract from his stellar performance) to the village to captain his own team to defeat the rivals from across the border, Veera sees an opportunity to fulfill her dream. Disguised as Veer, she infiltrates the all-male team, hits sixers one after the other (the Indian cricket team definitely missed this one), wins over Rohan’s admiration and manages to bowl him over with fiery alter ego Veera. Kudos to Ms Mukherjee for carrying off both the roles will great aplomb.

Can a Bollywood film revolving around India’s national obsession –cricket – ever go wrong? Yes, if you remember a recent debacle called Victory. But though talks of cricket helping to bring peace between the two countries sound a bit superficial in Dil Bole Hadippa!, it still works at some levels. In parts the film tends to drag a bit, with serious issues like gender bias and the India-Pakistan relationship making its perfunctory presence felt along with ample references to past Yash Raj films, but altogether it is an enjoyable fare.

Even item girls Rakhi Sawant and Sheryln Chopra have more than a blink-and-miss role in the film though the emphasis is of course on their curves.

If rumours of Rani’s high-handed behaviour on the sets which preceded the release of the film are indeed true, one can’t help but admit that no where does it effect the chemistry between the lead pair. Not only do they make a ‘cute couple’ but Rani’s chirpiness coupled with Shahid’s no-nonsense demeanor has the audience rooting for this pairing. The songs are just about average, but the energy the lead pair infuses into the dance sequences is truly attention-grabbing. Don’t leave without catching the lead track, which is played while the credits run at the end of the movie.

Pakistan link in piracy racket
Somendra Sharma / DNAWednesday, September 23, 2009 2:39 IST

Mumbai: A Pakistani operated the film piracy racket that was busted by the crime branch on Saturday and reported first by DNA on Monday. The gang has managed to get the DVDs of at least 11 Hindi films, including What's Your Rashee?, Wanted, Dil Bole Hadippa!, Aage Se Right, Let's Dance, FOX, Shadow, and Chal Chalein in the past six months.

Two months ago the police formed a special squad within the social service branch to find the major players in the piracy racket and understand their modus operandi. "Dil Bole Hadippa! released on September 18. A few days ago we received information that the movie print was already out in the market," Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police (crime), said. "We found the names of the persons involved but could not arrest them."
The police received information on Saturday that the master print of What's Your Rashee? had been leaked. A deal was supposed to take place early that morning near Guru Kripa Hotel at Kherwadi Junction, he said.

"Three people travelling on two Pulsar bikes arrived at the spot," Maria said. "Afsar alias Ashraf Haider Hussain, Firoz alias Sameer Irfan Khan, both Mumbra residents, were on a bike. They gave the movie's print to Aman alias Tanzeem Ali Hameed Ali, a Kherwadi resident. The police arrested them all at 5:30am. A DVD of the movie was seized from them."

During interrogation, the police found that the three men knew Durgadas Shriramswami Bhakta, a business development manager at Adlabs in Goregaon Film City. They had bought the DVD from Bhakta for Rs2 lakh, Maria said. On Sunday, the police arrested Bhakta and his associate, Pal. A local court remanded the five in police custody till September 30.

Bhakta told the police that Rajesh Harkishan Chaudhary, an associate vice-president of UFO Digital Mastering office in Andheri, had the master prints of several unreleased movies. The company digitally processes the prints of films and makes it a final product.

"Earlier, prints were given for individual distribution to theatres. Film pirates exploited loopholes and got hold of the prints while in transit," Ansar Peerzade, senior police inspector, said. "UFO has a system which uses a satellite to telecast movies at various cinemas." Chaudhary used to save movies on his laptop. He wrote the movies on DVDs and sold them to Bhakta who got them circulated in the market through his gang. Chaudhary was arrested on Tuesday.

After Bhakta gave the DVDs to Afsar, he would give them to Tanzeem, a computer expert. Tanzeem would upload the movie on his computer and send it to Asif in Karachi through the Internet. Asif sent movies to Bangladesh, Amsterdam, Germany, France, Australia, and Indonesia. "The gang has a huge network in Delhi, Gwalior, Chennai, and Ahmedabad," Peerzade said.

Maria said the gang got the money from Asif through hawala channels. "Tanzeem got Rs10,000 for a movie, Chaudhary and Bhakta Rs1 lakh each," he said. "Asif might have links with the underworld because it is an organised racket.

What’s your Rashee probe reveals pirate, distributor nexus
By Deeptiman Tiwary and Abhijit Sathe
Posted On Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 03:25:37 AM

Some of the top distributors in Bollywood may be aiding and abetting film piracy. This fact came to light after Mumbai Crime Branch busted a major racket involving employees of two major post-production companies and some pirates who have in the past six months pirated 11 films even before they were released.

The pirates have revealed the names of some distributors who gave them information on ready-to-be-released films and even helped procure copies of masterprints.

The latest masterprint that fell into their hands was of Ashutosh Gowariker’s What’s Your Rashee?, slated to be released on Friday.

The Crime Branch has arrested six people, including a business development manager from Adlabs Films and an associate vice president from UFO Moviez, in connection with the case. It has also found that the entire racket is being run from Karachi in Pakistan.

A Crime Branch officer said, “The accused have revealed the names of some distributors who were helping them with information on where the films were being processed and who were the people who could be contacted for a masterprint.

They also facilitated these liaisons.”

Crime Branch chief Rakesh Maria said, “There are some people from inside the industry, but we are still verifying their exact role and involvement. It would be premature to reveal their names as of now.”

HOW THE CASE WAS CRACKED

The Crime Branch was investigating a piracy racket involving copies of Dil Bole Hadippa! when it stumbled upon information that the masterprint of What’s Your Rashee? was out and would be delivered to a man in Kherwadi.

A Crime Branch team under Senior PI Ansar Peerzade and API Naik laid a trap on Sunday morning and arrested three people, Afsar Hyder Hussain alias Ashraf, 26, Firoz Irfan Khan alias Salim, 23, and Tanzim Ali Sayed, 26, and recovered pirated CDs of What’s Your Rashee? and Dil Bole Hadippa!.

During interrogation they told police that they had got the copy of the film’s masterprint from business development manager with Adlabs, Durgadas Bhakta, and associate vice president (operations and digital mastering) with UFO Moviez, Rajesh Chaudhary for Rs 2 lakh.

Following this, Crime Branch arrested the two along with Bhakta’s associate Ajay Pal, 27.

While Adlabs has processed What’s Your Rashee? UFO was entrusted with the job of digitising the film and releasing it in multiplexes by uplinking it to the satellite. It was at UFO that Chaudhary made a copy of the film on his laptop and wrote it on a DVD.

Both Bhakta and Chaudhary got Rs 1 lakh each for the job.

THE KARACHI ANGLE

The pirates also disclosed that they would send a print to one Asif in Karachi who would further distribute them to various countries including Bangladesh, France, Germany, Netherlands and Indonesia.

INDUSTRY REACTS

An official spokesperson from Adlabs said, “Our security measures makes us one of the most protected and safe environments for motion picture handling. The incident regarding What’s Your Rashee? is not attributable to us in any manner.”

Siddarth Roy Kapoor of UTV said, “We are currently in the process of determining the exact events that have transpired, but have been assured by the authorities that the print was recovered before any damage was done. On a lighter note, we are very encouraged at the huge demand for What’s Your Rashee? amongst the pirates, but would urge them to wait three days to watch the film in all its glory on the silver screen.”
