Rani Mukerji on loving the calcutta audience, learning from the two khans, being a child on set now and playing only landmark characters Rani Mukerji was in town on Thursday to be crowned Queen B(ollywood) at the Boroplus Anandalok Purashkar 2011 for her spunky portrayal of a dynamic journalist in the year’s sleeper hit No One Killed Jessica. On her way from Science City to the airport, she got chatty : How does it feel receiving yet another Anandalok award? For me, it’s just the encouragement… the unconditional love that I get each time when I come here, that keeps bringing me back to Calcutta. Awards have never been more important than the audience for me. When you work very hard through the whole year on a film and are awarded for it, obviously it’s a great feeling, but audience acceptance is the benchmark for me. Getting an award makes me happy; not getting one doesn’t make me unhappy. But having said that, I never miss an Anandalok award when I get one. Wherever I am, I make it a point to come in person and receive my award. Does receiving an award in Calcutta make it more special? It sure is special. As a Bengali, I have a responsibility towards my fans in Calcutta. I know that everyone here is extremely proud of my achievements. I am referred to as ‘Amader Rani’ here. It makes me feel so loved, but at the same time, it makes me feel all that more responsible because I know that I can’t let my Calcutta fans down. Where does No One Killed Jessica feature in your filmography? It was such a different role to portray. It wasn’t a role that was typical of a Hindi film heroine. Meera was more like a hero. It was a character that actually took the story forward…. Meera made a lot of things happen. It wasn’t something that I had ever done before. I actually had to play a man! And what really worked for me is that the urban and empowered Indian woman today is just like Meera. No more are women coy and shy… they don’t take shit from anyone. They believe that they can change the world — and rightly so. I have so many fans abroad and whenever I do a film, I try and play characters that show the world what the contemporary Indian woman is all about. I also personally believe that women can do any job better than men, and that’s what Meera was all about. Like I really believe that women make better journalists than men! You’ve played so many strong characters even before No One Killed Jessica. Today, when you see a woman-centric film like The Dirty Picture being applauded, how do you feel? It’s always nice to be a trendsetter in this industry and see others follow you. It’s very important that women in Bollywood now get their due recognition. We should be acknowledged as the ones who can also drive a film, not only the hero. The industry has always been so male-dominated, but things are changing now. If you see Jessica’s numbers — where there was just Vidya (Balan) and me — and you compare it to any other hero-centric film that released during that period, you will see how far we have raced ahead. Somewhere down the line, people want to see women-oriented films, but it has to be something really extraordinary. Male-dominated films can be any kind of masala and people will watch it! (Laughs). Your next film Talaash pairs you opposite Aamir Khan once again and for the first time in your career you are working with a woman director (Reema Kagti)… For me, a director is far more important than anyone on set, even the producer. It was lovely being on set with Reema because a woman director always brings something more to the table. I really enjoyed working with her, because she had fresh ideas and an infectious enthusiasm. Of course, having Farhan (Akhtar) and Aamir produce a film is a huge advantage because you know that your film will be marketed well. As for Aamir, it’s always a wonderful thing to share screen space with someone with whom I literally did one of my first films (Ghulam). With Aamir on set, it’s always been a teacher-student relationship because I always like to observe what he is doing… he’s so dedicated… such a perfectionist. I have learnt a lot from him and from Shah Rukh (Khan) when I first came in. Off set, they may be my friends… I may backslap them and go ‘yaar-dost’… but once on the set, I look at Aamir and Shah Rukh as fabulous actors that I can still learn so much from. Are you as excited facing the camera today as you were more than a decade ago? I think it’s more now. When I was new, I wasn’t really all that excited about doing films. I never really wanted to be an actress. I just did it because my mother (Krishna) persuaded me to. The deal with her was that I would do this one film and if it flopped, I didn’t have to act anymore. But then, my first film (Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat) worked and there was no looking back! It was also a time when things were not good financially for my family and so when the offers started pouring in, I chose to work rather than pursue my studies. But I would just go on set, do my bit and come back… very mechanically. It was just a job for me... just a way of earning money. I wasn’t really ready to woo the audiences as such. The love for my craft came in much later when I saw the response that I was getting, film after film. I used to get these fan letters and I was like: ‘Wow, so many people love me? Now I can’t let them down’. That’s when I started paying more attention to the kind of films that I signed and the kind of roles that I did. Today, every day on set is a new experience for me. Now, I am like a child in front of the camera, trying to do my best so that the audience, like a teacher, gives me a star! (Laughs). What kind of roles are you looking for now? I will not say that I am being choosy, because choosy is a much-abused term in our industry (laughs). But now, when I agree to do a film, it has to be something that merits 200 days of my life in a year. I should be happy, excited when I go on set. Like now, I am doing this film called Aiyya (produced by Anurag Kashyap and co-starring southern superstar Prithviraj) and in every shot, I feel that I have come alive. I want to play characters like the ones in Talaash and Aiyya that take me one step ahead as an actress. For me, it’s never been a question of how many films I am doing. If I had to do films, I would have probably been doing 10 now. Every character I now play has to be a landmark character. What about a Bengali film? It’s always been that someone or the other will come from Calcutta and offer me a Bengali film, but nothing has materialised as of now. I am very clear about one thing — I will not do just about any film just because it happens to be in my language. It has to have substance, something that, again, my fans in Calcutta would be proud of. If a Bengali film has to happen sometime, it definitely will happen. |

Wedding bells soon? Rani, Aditya snapped at airport The so-far discreet Aditya Chopra – Rani Mukherjee romance is finally out in the open as our photographer spotted Rani at the airport with the Chopras, returning from what we assume is a New Year getaway. What's more, the reclusive Aditya Chopra didn't shy away from the camera either, though our photographer maintains that the Chopras and Rani were careful to keep a 5-minute gap between their arrivals. After a holiday with the Chopras, one would assume the wedding is now just a formality and very likely early this year as has been widely speculated. The Rani – Aditya romance had reportedly put a strain Aditya's relationship with his parents, both of whom were close to his first wife Payal.A holiday with the Chopras puts all speculation of tension between father and son and Rani's relationship with the senior Chopras, at rest.Though seen in films, Rani Mukherjee mostly maintained a low profile off screen in 2011.Last year, Rani Mukherjee reportedly lost her cool on the TV show India's Most Desirable when host Simi Garewal repeatedly prodded her about an impending marriage to Aditya Chopra. The incident which apparently occurred during the taping of the show, shocked the audience on the sets. After it was widely reported, Rani reportedly requested the show's producers to edit the portion. Rani's intimacy with the Yashraj camp has made her an exclusive Yash Raj heroine, which some say has hampered, not advanced, her career. |

Anurag Kashyap's 'Aiyya' to be released on September 28 New Delhi: The releasing date of Anurag Kashyap's 'Aiyya' has been confirmed. Trade analyst and film critic Tran Adarsh tweeted that the film is scheduled to be released on September 28, 2012. He tweets,"Viacom18's co-production with @ankash1009 titled 'Aiyya!', starring Rani Mukherjee, confirmed for release on 28 September." The film is a quirky love story between a Marathi girl and a Tamil boy. Directed by Sachin Kundalkar, the film has Rani Mukherjee and Prithviraj as the lead pair. The central theme of the film is quite interesting which is about a woman who finds a man desirable because he smells good. The year 2012 can prove to be a comeback year for Rani Mukherjee who has one more big film lined up to be released this year. She will be seen along with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in Reema Kagti's 'Talaash'. |

I have nothing to hide: Rani Mukerji Days after actor Rani Mukerji and filmmaker Aditya Chopra were caught off-guard by the paparazzi while returning from their European holiday, there has been a flutter at the airport. Security guards have been posted at ‘soft spots’ that offers the best views of celebs coming in and going out of the international airport. Speculations are rife that it could be the result of Rani pulling up airport authorities for it. “I have nothing to hide,” says Rani in a nonchalant manner. “I went for my holiday and returned from it in public. I was just tired as I had a long flight but there was absolutely nothing to hide. I had no intention of doing it. So, why would I complain against anyone? I haven’t even spoken to anybody about it. People were doing their jobs and I am absolutely okay with it,” she adds. But isn’t she known tokeep attention off her private life especially when it comes to Aditya, who hates to be clicked. “I am a private person but that doesn’t mean I will stop people from doing their jobs. We were both coming out of airport and people just clicked photos. I have never raised an issue about it. If people want to introduce some new rules and regulations, they are welcome to do so. But I take serious exception to the fact if somebody has been going around telling that the new regulations have been put into place because of me. Never!” she exclaims. So, now that Rani and Aditya have been publicly snapped returning from a holiday together, is there a possibility that they might get married soon? For the first time, Rani sounds positive. “I myself am not aware of my wedding date. When I know the date, I will tell the whole world about it,” she says, sounding amused. “I promise not to get married secretly or suddenly. When marriage happens, it will be a proper one — customs, traditions and all. I am a very traditional person at heart and I will like to have a very traditional wedding. But y’allwill have to wait for the announcement. I deserve that much liberty, isn’t it?” she asks. |

Bollywood icons regale Puneites PUNE: The packed auditorium at City Pride in Kothrud reverberated with applause as Amitabh Bachchan, Asha Bhosle and Rani Mukherji arrived to inaugurate the 10th Pune International Film Festival (Piff) on Thursday. The audience was left spellbound by Bhosle's ever-lively voice, the rich baritone of Big B recounting memorable moments spent in Pune and Rani Mukherji's speech in Marathi. The inaugural function of Piff, jointly organized by the state government and the Pune Film Foundation, was attended by state cultural affairs minister Sanjay Deotale, well-known music composer Ilaiyaaraja, actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar, director of Piff Jabbar Patel among other international jury members. The very presence of Amitabh and Rani was a reason enough for the crowd to go hysterical. A few managed to squeeze into the hall while most fans had to contend with capturing a glimpse of their favourite superstars from the outside. Bachchan, obviously and deservingly, got a standing ovation . In his speech, Bachchan thanked the audience for their overwhelming reception and the love they have bestowed on him for "his modest contribution to the film industry". The actor said, "A journey of 42 years has been like a dream for me. I never thought I would act in films. I never expected the love and affection that I got from the people all these years. My stay in this industry has indeed been a pleasurable one. Pune is known for art, culture and films. But it remains a special city for me for a personal reason. I met my wife Jaya here. The decision to marry her was also taken in this city." Recalling her 65-year-long association with the film industry, Asha Bhosle said, "I came (in the film industry) when I was 10 years old. My struggle and efforts have given me success. I am proud to be a Marathi. The Marathi people have always given me love." Bhosle acknowledged the presence of music genius Ilaiyaraaja by singing a song with him in Tamil. She ended her speech with a Marathi song. The audience was thrilled when Rani took the stage and began by asking the crowd in Marathi if they were okay with she speaking in Marathi. Rani said, "I am not a Marathi, but now I feel that I am one. With my speech in Marathi, I feel that I am now a pakka Marathi." Bachchan and Bhosle were felicitated with awards for outstanding contribution to Indian cinema while Ilaiyaraaja was given the Sachin Dev Burman international award for creative music and sound. Pilgaonkar was honoured for completing 50 years in cinema. |

The Tale of Two Bollywood Ladies They were once the reigning divas of Bollywood but over time, a few bad scripts and the advent of fresh faces changed Sushmita Sen and Rani Mukerji’s fortunes. While the latter got some spunk back into her career with No One Killed Jessica, the former may need an image overhaul, both in dressing and acting. At a Mumbai event on January 11, the ex-Miss Universe, turned up in ill-fitting textured grey pants, glimmering black top with a velvet jacket. In contrast, Mukerji, now a nominee on a few awards lists, arrived at a function in a simple yet elegant sari, accessorised with pearl and gold jhumkas. Her fitness instructor and stylist, should both take a bow. |

When Rani Mukherjee won hearts in true Marathi style at Pune film fest When the "Aati kya Khandala" girl Rani Mukherjee turned out wearing a traditional Marathi "Nath" (nose ring), she drew an instant applause from the audience at the inauguration of a film festival in the presence of mega star Amitabh Bachchan and legendary singer Asha Bhosale here. But the cheers reached a crescendo last night when the actress made a start to finish speech in Marathi declaring herself a "Marathi" girl born in Mumbai. "I was born in Mumbai. Even if I am not Marathi, I am Marathi....", she gushed at the tenth Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) which got underway with the felicitation of Bachchan, Bhosale and eminent musician IIlayraaja for their outstanding contribution to Indian cinema and creative music. Rani, who was the chief guest, said she was currently shooting in Pune for film "Ayya", playing the role of a Marathi girl which had turned her into a "pucci (hardcore) Marathi". Clad in "Paithani", sporting a "Nath" and wearing a "gajara" on the bun in typical Maharashtrian fashion, Rani was at her charming best as she ended her talk with three words associated with female blushes and shyness "Ayya, Issha , Agabaai", in a finale to her Marathi act that enthralled the Gathering. |

Rani Mukerji: I Won't Deny I'm In Love Posted Image Image courtesy: © Abhay Singh Acting wasn’t a passion for Rani Mukerji, when she burst on to the Indian screens in 1997. It was a job she had taken up as anyone does after college when given her first job. She took this job very seriously because she didn’t want to let her parents down. She also took it up because she wanted to pull her family out of one of the rockiest patches — financially and emotionally — ever. Fifteen years hence and innumerable awards and accolades later, her life looks like a fairy tale or a Bollywood script that couldn’t have been written any better. In an industry where the shelf life of an actress is getting shorter by the month — even as actors rule the roost for two decades or more — Rani has seen her fair share of ups and downs that have taught her valuable lessons. In the last few years, she has faltered in terms of choice of films. But one thing that she hasn’t forgotten is to do her job well, i.e. to act. She takes it up as seriously as she did during the mahurat shot of Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat as a 16-year-old. But today, there’s more passion than ever, and a mastery of her craft that compels you to appreciate her skills as an actress, even if you aren’t her die-hard fan. After the success of No One Killed Jessica early last year, she is awaiting her next two releases this year — the Reema Kagti-directed thriller Talaash, with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap’s quirky comedy Aiyya directed by National Award- winning director Sachin Kundalkar. We ask the ‘Queen of Bollywood’ about the journey during which her job turned into her passion, the girl Rani morphed into the woman who rules hearts and, of course, a certain someone she “is dating”. What are you doing these days? “I’ve just returned from Lonavala where I was shooting for Aiyya. A few songs are yet to be shot.” Has the industry changed since you joined films? “Immensely. Nowadays, the first look of the film is almost as important as the film itself. I’m eagerly waiting for the promos of Talaash, which are to hit the screens soon. It’s going to be released in June. And the fact that I’m doing two films that are as different as they can be from one another in the same year, speaks volumes about how times have changed. It’s a far bigger, more diverse- than-ever industry that’s gone global in terms of its scope in every possible way.” Did you always want to become an actress? “Arre, my joining films is a poori filmi kahaani. Though I technically come from a film family, my father had stopped making films even before my brother and I were born. So I did not really grow up in a filmi environment. And when I was growing up, becoming an actress was still quite a taboo. And you may not believe this but even my father did not want me to join films. Salim (Akhtar) uncle, who was very close to my family, came with the offer of Aa Gale Lag Jaa in 1994, but my father was aghast. He immediately turned it down. In the meantime, I joined college (SNDT, Juhu) pursuing Home Science. Those days the ‘in thing’ that most girls were going after as a career choice was jewellery designing and interior designing. Now, I didn’t have the money to pursue a Rs 3 lakh course to make a career. And then Salim uncle came back again to talk about my entering films. I think he must have been pretty desperate to launch a new actress. This time, he managed to convince my parents.” How did he manage that? “(Laughs) When Salim uncle came to me and said he wanted me to act in his film, I started crying. I thought he was making a pass at me….” Why on earth…? “Because I was daft. And the fact that in those days, acting was still considered a taboo for the girls in my family. My mom’s side was okay with it, as my aunt (Bengali actress Debashree Roy) is an actress. In fact, she had kept it from me till then, but she was seriously harbouring dreams of me becoming an actress. My father was still adamant about me not joining films. You know that typical MCP behaviour of probably all fathers from a middle class Bengali household—‘Kya? Ghar ki ladki filmon mein kaam karegi?’ But by that time my second cousins, Kajol and Sharbani, had entered films. And that sort of paved the way for me too. My mother and father still fought over it for quite a few days before he finally agreed to give me at least one shot at it — of course, with the strict clause that my mom will accompany me everywhere.” And you? Did you know anything about acting by then? “I wish I could show you the recording of my first screen test. You will literally sprint away from the room thinking ‘who is this horrible actress’?’” What was so bad? “Those days, I used to be quite chubby. And Salim uncle, who had done Baazi with Mamta Kulkarni a few years ago, somehow fished those shorter-than-short and tighter-than-tight clothes that looked completely hideous on me. And to top that, I had to act! I was a shy kid with inhibitions galore. It was some courtroom scene and when someone gave me the sheet with dialogues, I was dumbfounded. I saw all these famous dialogues from famous films which I had to say in front of the camera. My understanding of films was just as much as any young girl who watches Bollywood films. I had no idea about the whole process of filmmaking, about dialogue writing, scripts, screenplay etc. I had probably gone to two or three film shoots in my childhood. And even when on a shoot as a young girl, I would find actors just giving their shots and sitting in their vans getting bored in-between shots. So when the whole picture opened up in front of me about the reality of becoming an actress, I was petrified. And my screen test was a disaster. I came back crying and said ‘I would not be able to do this — anything but acting!’” Then? “But Salim uncle came back and said I had a photogenic face and the camera captured me quite well, which is very important for any actress or actor. So that was one glimmer of hope in my otherwise nightmarish experience. My mother sat me down that night and told me, ‘opportunity knocks at your door just once, take it up. What’s the worst that could happen? You’ll fail at your effort? We are there after that. But at least you’d know you have tried, and won’t regret leaving this golden opportunity’. And though it was never told to me, but I knew my family was going through a financial crisis. And there was also tension in the family because of a lot of bickering between my father and his brothers. So I decided that I would work very hard (there was a month left for the shoot of Raja Ki...) and somehow give myself one good shot, even if it didn’t work out in the end. I took it up as a job that just had to be done.” What happened in that one month for you to give that spirited performance? “My father took me to join Roshan Taneja’s acting classes. Now, Mr Taneja had two courses, one was a year-long one and the other a three-month one. I had to learn all the acting I could in one month. Kaise hoga? I told Mr Taneja I would come in the morning and evening for a month and be a dedicated student. On the very first day, my dad took took me to him, and said, ‘Please teach my daughter how to act’. Mr Taneja said, ‘Acting isn’t a tablet. You can’t pop it and become an actress. It has to come from within you. It’s either there somewhere deep within you or it’s not there’. That statement of his stayed with me for a long time — that you can’t mug up acting. You can’t learn it from books. It was my first lesson. But in the classes, I was at sea. I didn’t know where to start. Thankfully, one good thing that happened was that the improvisation classes — where we all had to face the camera and say whatever came to our mind and enact a scene — sort of broke through my shy exterior. In any acting class, there are always a lot of faces looking at you from all corners and that’s done on purpose so that the person drops all his/her inhibitions. On the day of the mahurat, when I was called to give my first shot, I thought, ‘yaar, I can’t let my parents down. I just have to give it my best’. And then, when I walked into the shot, I was this confident, fiery ball of energy, spouting dialogues like I had never imagined I would. I haven’t looked back since that day.” And how did this job eventually become your passion? “That happened later, you know, when I started getting fan mail, slowly. Those days I was doing a lot of films. But my fans kept on writing that they were not happy with me. So I wondered ‘Arre, I am toh working 72 hours at a stretch, not eating right, not getting enough sleep, giving my best to each shot, so what was going wrong?’ Then I realised after Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, my fans’ expectations of me were higher than my own. That’s when I learnt my second lesson as an actress — that it’s not just performing, I also had to be savvy enough to know good scripts from the not-so-good ones. So, I started getting more involved in the whole process; understanding films beyond just the acting part. Somewhere during this whole process, acting became my passion.” Coming back to the present, what went wrong in the last couple of years before No One Killed Jessica last year? You had some consecutive flops after a spate of hits, and suddenly you just vanished... (Snaps her fingers and says with a smile) “Don’t worry, from this year you’ll see me in two films every year at least. Coming back to your question, I had seen failures before but when those three films (Laaga Chunri Mein Daag, Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic and Dil Bole Hadippa) failed in quick succession, it affected me in a way no flop had affected me before. I didn’t know what I had done wrong. My confidence was completely shattered. All the movies I had taken up failed to make a mark with audiences and critics alike. Maybe the critics thought we’ve praised her enough, now it’s time for her to fall a bit hard, so she steps her game up (smiles). I also think I was plain unlucky. The audience has little memory of what you have done before or are capable of doing. What matters is what’s happening today. So three flops probably told them ‘Rani has worked so well in the last few years, maybe it’s time she took a back seat and settled down’.” And are you settling down? (Smile that says read-my-expression-if-you-can; Yours Truly interprets it as elusive) “When I plan to settle down, I will announce it to the world. Marriage is an occasion to celebrate. I shall celebrate it when it happens, letting everyone know about it.” What about the rumours of your relationship with Aditya Chopra? “I have been linked with so many of my co-stars and this Aditya rumour has stayed with me for the longest time. So, this time I’m going to give you the clichéd answer that no journalist wants to hear, ‘No comments’.” Are you dating someone? “Yes, I am dating, but that’s as far as I’m willing to talk about my personal life.” People, your fans especially, want to know about your personal life? They want to know if marriage is on the cards… “They will when the time comes. Right now I have two movies coming out, which I’m very excited about. And that’s what I’m going to talk about.” Are you saying nothing is serious as far as your dating goes? “See, in a relationship there are two people involved. Since I’m a public figure, if I start answering questions, it’ll open the door for more questions, speculations, gossip… and then it comes to a point where everyday someone has something to say about your personal life. It’s not fair to the other person. I don’t mind a bitchy comment about the way I dress or my films not doing well, but a comment on what I consider to be my private space is not welcome at all.” Are you a romantic? “I’m a born romantic. I romanticise everything in life. My personal life is full of love and romance. God’s given us one life. You should romance it. It’s not always nice and cool to be practical and logical.” What have your relationships/heartbreaks taught you? “I haven’t been in a lot of relationships. Heartbreak definitely teaches you to be a better actor. Don’t they say, an artiste always performs better when he or she has experienced heartbreak? (Laughs) Okay, that was a joke. I do not give that much importance to men. All my heartbreaks since childhood have been because of close friends, not due to the men in my life.” Seriously? (On a serious note) “Heartbreak, anger, frustration… if you can overcome these emotions, you become a better person. If you’re a person of substance, you will overcome your bad times. Who wants to be a loser? Will you marry an actor? “No, two megalomaniacs can’t exist in the same house. We’ll probably end up killing each other.” What’s the best thing about being in a relationship? (Enigmatic smile again) “That you can hide it. And the best part of getting married is that you can announce it to the world.” What about the fact that today the shelf life of actresses is very low? Would you ever decide to do an item number? Or attend more red carpet events since visibility is so important these days? “No. Because for me it’s important to cement an impression of my work. Acting is what I do best. It’s not difficult to be in the public eye. Go anywhere and you’ll find the media. See, I am not trying to sound high and mighty here. If I was being launched today, then I would do it exactly as the newcomers are doing it these days. But after 15 years in the course of which I have firmly established my credentials as an actress, I plan to only focus on acting. But if friends call me, I’ll be there. Like I went to Farah’s (Khan) house-warming party recently. Aamir (Khan) and Kiran (Rao) had a son and going there was important for me because he is someone who is very dear to me. As are Shah Rukh Khan and Karan (Johar) and a few other friends when they call me.” Have you spoken to Abhishek after he became a father? “We aren’t in touch on the phone, but whenever I come across him, I will definitely congratulate him. It’s great news.” What did that low phase in your life teach you? “When I was joining films my dad had told me something: ‘Don’t ever be disheartened with failure and don’t be over-excited with success’. This is the most important lesson to be learnt in any actor’s life.” But can you really separate your emotions as professional and personal in your mind? Hurt is hurt, disappointment is disappointment… “That’s where your family and your strength as an individual come in. I am very close to my family. And I have other interests, like my other big passion is baking. I started baking in one of my very low phases in life. I find it therapeutic. Like a typical Bengali family, we all like desserts. In fact, right after this interview I have to go and bake two cakes for a friend whose birthday I forgot!” What cakes are you baking? “Strawberry and Dutch Truffle. With lots of icing.” So, would we see a Rani Mukerji patisserie soon? “You could (smiles). I am very serious about going to Paris or Chicago for a fulltime patisserie course.” Any other venture in mind? A lot of actresses are starting their own fashion lines. Or maybe even film production… “No. The only thing I will be producing next is babies. No other production happening with me.” Is there a lot of bitching/backbiting in the industry? “There is, but that’s true of any industry where over-competitive minds are always at work. But it is blown out of proportion in ours because it’s the glamour industry.” Have you been at the receiving end of bitching? “People say bitchy things about other people to feel good about themselves. Like I said before, I come from a middle-class Bengali family. Whatever I have got in life has been a huge blessing. I have never gone after something that’s not mine. Today, I am sitting at my office in Juhu, overlooking the sea. I used to live in a shack before. I always used to travel in rickshaws. Today, I have a Mercedes. But if I start thinking, ‘I have a bungalow, why not a building in Bandra tomorrow? Or now, I have a car so why not a yacht next?’ My life will be very difficult. My mind doesn’t work that way. The only ambition I have is to pick up scripts that are interesting and give a stellar performance that’ll be etched in the audiences’ and my fans’ minds.” |

Want to become an actor? Education and character are basic foundations, especially in Professional Acting Courses where an individual takes the first step towards his career. Acting teachers have special responsibilities — they must teach a subject to students, who want to channel and develop their varying degrees of talent through a dependable technique. Roshan Taneja is one such teacher who is accredited with training many leading actors including Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Ranbir Kapoor, Tushar Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi, Sharman Joshi, Sonam Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and several others. Actor Anil Kapoor says, “Roshan Taneja is the best guru India has ever had and should be honoured and treasured forever.” Rani Mukherji echoes similar sentiments. “He made me realise the importance of reacting to the actor in front of me,” she says. Actor Abhishek Bachchan adds, “If you want to be trained as an actor, there is only one person who can do that — Taneja saheb.” Veteran actress Shabana Azmi says, “If you want to train as an actor, there can be no better teacher than Roshan Taneja.” And finally Naseeruddin Shah says, “Taneja saheb opened my mind as an actor and taught me the importance of kindness and patience apart from everything else he gave me as an actor.” The methodology at the Roshan Taneja School of Acting has evolved over the years, with changing of acting exercises and scenes to suit the times. The school provides a four month Diploma Course as well as weekend Crash Courses for aspiring actors. Batches start from February 17. |

Aamir raises expectations Aamir Khan’s Talaash may be well over five months away from release but the way buzz is building around the film with every passing day, one can safely conclude that it will be worth the wait. The film, produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, has already topped a recent poll of the most awaited films this year. Ritesh, who is very pleased with the goings on, says, “Actually, the fact that Aamir is seen very rarely makes audiences root for him even more.” The last time the star was seen in the offbeat Dhobi Ghaat; so understandably, fans are pining to see him in a full-fledged commercial role again after the blockbuster 3 Idiots, say insiders. Ritesh continues, “Since he does only one film a year, there is always a lot of curiosity and eagerness to see his work. Anything that he does creates a lot of expectations and Talaash isn’t any different. We all know that the film will be scrutinised in almost every aspect and we are prepared for that.” “The hit pair of Kareena Kapoor and Aamir is fueling the buzz further, because everyone is also waiting to see how they manage to outshine their hit jodi of 3 Idiots,” says an industry source, adding, “Even Rani Mukherjee, who created quite an impact with her comeback film No One Killed Jessica, is generating a lot of curiosity because she will be returning to the screen after a year-and-a-half.” But Ritesh is not one to be fazed by the weight of expectations. He says, “The coming together of such talent does lead to a lot of anticipation. But we have our strategies in place, it’s just not time yet to begin working on them.” |

From Rani Mukerji interview : ON THE KHANS Aamir Khan: With him, my first relationship is of a mentor and student. He taught me how to master my craft when we did “Ghulam”. His intensity and passion as an actor is unmatched. Shah Rukh Khan: You have to work with him to believe just how much energy a human being can possibly have. The kind of exuberance he brings in to the set is infectious. Aamir and Shah Rukh are my No. 1 wellwishers in this industry. . Salman Khan: Around Salman Khan, we all feel like chaprasis. When he’s around, there’s just no where else to look. He is just so good looking. He’s always been and always will be a true blue star. . ON HER FITNESS AND PERSONAL STYLE I like to see myself toned. I watch what I eat. It’s not that I don’t indulge but if you give me a choice between my favorite plate of greasy food and my slim image in front of the mirror, I will always choose the latter. I love wearing dresses. I buy a lot of dresses from BCBG, gowns from Donna Karan. Among Indian designers, I like Tarun Tahiliani, Sabyasachi and Anuradha Vakil. I wear a lot of pyjamas. They are chic, stylish as well as comfortable. |

Sammy Dallal / The National The UAE's airwaves will receive a spicy makeover with the arrival of the country's newest radio station, Radio Mirchi. Launched today by Abu Dhabi Media (which also owns The National) with its first broadcast at 6am, and a formal ceremony at Emirates Palace later in the day where the Bollywood star Rani Mukherjee made an appearance, Radio Mirchi's reach extends across the UAE. While it may be a new player in the UAE, the Radio Mirchi brand (Mirchi means "chilli" in Hindi) is a heavyweight in India, with more than 40 million listeners tuning in daily for its energetic mix of Bollywood music and news . The UAE station manager Sandeep Sud says the station, broadcasting in the Hinglish dialect favoured by south-east Asian youth and expatriates, will bring its trademark energy to the UAE in what is the brand's first foray overseas. "Mirchi is all about injecting sunshine into our listeners' days," he says. "Our programmes are designed to be full of fun and energy, our attitude is progressive and we endeavour to offer the hottest mix of entertainment and information." However, Sud says the UAE station will have its own flavour, with local programming hosted by a mix of home-grown and overseas talent. "We have invested heavily in research, in order for us to fully understand the radio landscape here, and the demand for music, entertainment and news," he says. The Hindi-language station will stream from the capital, in a "six-figure" tie-up with Abu Dhabi Media, according to Sandeep Sud, Head of Radio Mirchi UAE. Flying down especially for the launch was Bollywood star Rani Mukherjee, fresh from her current win as Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her film, "No One Killed Jessica". The Hindi-language station is being touted as the only radio channel that will be heard with complete clarity across all of UAE, streaming across three frequencies: 97.3FM in Abu Dhabi, 88.8FM in Dubai and the Northern Emirates and 95.6FM in Al Ain. Talking about the investment, Sud was noncommital on the figure, simply saying in dirham terms that it was an initial investment of "six figures,", adding: "On paper, our plan to break even is three years, but we are aggressively aiming to do so in two years. That is our personal goal." Sud also added that all the content will be produced locally, with a lot of research going into designing the shows. "We have broken it into a five-part day, which will commence at 6am with the breakfast show," he said. "This will be followed by a midday show between 11am and 2pm, which will target the housewives. "Following this, between 2pm and 5pm will be our Bollywood driven content, titled Totally Filmy. Post which, we will go up to 9pm with our drivetime show until 9pm and then we switch to retro classics up to midnight." The late hours will play back-to-back music nonstop. He revealed that all the RJs have been recruited from various Radio Mirchi stations in India, with a total seven who will take to the air. Also present at the launch were Abdul Rahman Awadh Al Harthi, Director of the Abu Dhabi Radio Network and Malcolm Wall, CEO Abu Dhabi Media. Speaking about ADM's long-term plan, Wall said: "We are ultimately positioning ourselves as a multimedia company, which aims at performing public service and commercial focus. We plan to continue with that ideology. Al Harthi added: "Where radio programming is concerned, we are looking at building a future by going 'glocal' - a marriage of global and local content. That is the future." |

Rani Mukerji left confused after getting Supporting actress award Rani Mukerji is apparently wondering why she was given the award for Best Supporting Actress, when her role in No One Killed Jessica was as important as that of Vidya Balan's. Now that Vids has hogged all the limelight for TDP, we guess Rani stood no chance for the Best Actress award. So they tried pleasing her with the next available slot. Phew! |

New interview of Rani Mukerji : Regal in name, royal in nature – Rani Mukherjee takes up residence at the Emirates Palace as she launches Bollywood station Radio Mirchi A firm favourite in its native India, Radio Mirchi provides an up-to-date look at all the comings and goings in Bollywood whilst playing the Hindi hits fans of the movies demand. Launched yesterday in Abu Dhabi, to be broadcast all over the UAE, the Abu Dhabi Media and Entertainment Network (India) Limited station invited Indian film industry royalty to kick things off in the form of No One Killed Jessica star Rani Mukherjee. The 33-year-old babe from Bengal sat down with City Times to discuss her involvement with the project, her highly anticipated movie Talaash and what she’s most looking forward to this year. What made you come to the Middle East for this launch? What do you think Radio Mirchi will offer the UAE? Radio Mirchi has been playing my film music for so many years and all the DJs are very nice and extremely warm. Whenever I have gone in to promote my films, they have done a great job. They asked me to help launch internationally in the UAE, so I have come to Abu Dhabi for them. It didn’t take a minute’s hesitation to say yes. I would always do a lot for them because they are a lovely radio station and I believe they deserve every friendly gesture. In India everyone is so happy listening to Radio Mirchi and taking it international means we can spread more happiness. Plus we always need more Bollywood music everywhere. In today’s world of eclectic entertainment and news sources, what value does the radio hold? Radio stations are still close to everyone’s heart. They don’t just play music, but they talk about what’s happening in the day-to-day lives of people. If something important happens, radio people take on the issues and talk about it. It’s a very wholesome way to connect with people of the country. Radio stations will always have a point of view and they are very open about where they stand. That is nice to hear, especially when you’re driving and stuck in traffic. This being your first time here, what are your initial impressions of Abu Dhabi? I haven’t seen much as I came in at three in the morning. I was very tired and went straight to bed. I’m staying at Emirates Palace, so when I woke up I was amazed. I thought, ‘This is not home, this is a palace!’ It goes with my name Rani – Rani woke up in a palace today. I went for a walk on the beach and saw all the tall buildings around. It’s a beautiful place and very peaceful. The film on everyone’s lips at the moment is Talaash with Aamir Khan, what can you tell us about it? I can’t talk much about the film because we haven’t started promoting it yet. We have just had the first trailers out recently. It’s been a great experience working with Aamir and Kareena (Kapoor) after a long time. It’s going to be a nice film for everyone to watch and I’m keeping my fingers crossed to see how audiences react to the film. Will it create the same buzz as your last drama No One Killed Jessica? That was an amazing time. Playing a journalist opened my mind to how crime reporters work. I got a newfound respect for all of them because it’s a really daring job. I hope Talaash will have the same impact. It has been said that you now only consider dramatic roles, is this true? No I don’t agree, because after Talaash I’ll be in a romantic comedy called Aiyya that will tickle your funny bone. It’s coming out just after Talaash and Radio Mirchi will play all the music. For me a good film and good role just works. The genre doesn’t matter. As an actor you must explore all sorts of genres to test oneself. Whatever role I like or character I am fond of, I will play. What are you most looking forward to in 2012? I’m really looking forward to both my releases this year. Both are close to my heart and I hope it will be a good year for movies. |

Interview ( from RadioMirchi launch) Did you listen to a lot of radio while growing up? Not really. People may not know this but I was very studious as a kid. Books and friends took up most of my time. The only time I heard radio, being a Bengali, was during Durga Puja. My mother used to tune in to listen to prayers early in the morning. If you were asked to manage a radio channel, what kind of programmes would you have on air? I would ensure that programmes on music topped the list. Any kind of music is good since it soothes you, excites you and makes you want to dance. People listen to music on all occasions so I can’t think of anything better to beat that. There are a lot of action movies this year in the pipeline from ‘Agent Vinod,’ ‘Dabangg 2,’ ‘Race 2,’ to ‘Tezz’. What makes your upcoming movie ‘Taalash’ with Aamir any different? Well just because two movies have action scenes it doesn’t make them both similar! ‘Taalash’ has a different script altogether with psychological thrills. You have another interesting movie coming up, ‘Aiyaa’ starring south Indian star Prithviraj. The movie has been in the news since you have dialogues in Marathi. How difficult was it to learn the language? It wasn’t difficult at all. I was born and raised in Mumbai. I learnt Marathi in school for three year. Moreover, our household help used to talk to me in Marathi. Of course, it required time and effort to become fluent in the language. But this is what makes my role in ‘Aiyaa’ interesting and challenging! Is there one fact about Rani Mukherji that her fans don’t know about? I bake really good cakes! |

Rani Mukherjee latest interview : Rani, of the amber-coloured eyes, has grown from a childlike girl to an actress with a wider perception of cinema. FILMS like Black, No One killed Jessica, Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Bunty Aur Babli, show her versatility. The ‘Babli’ actress chats with Lata Kubchandani about her school days, acting experiences and gives tips to cinema aspirants. Q. What kind of a student were you in school and college? A. Born and brought up in Mumbai, I studied in Maneckji Cooper school and was a good student, very obedient. My teachers used to love me. So I definitely must have been doing something right because I was always in their good books! Q. What were your favourite subjects? A. History and English literature. Q. Which teacher do you remember the most and why? A. Mrs. Dadarkar, who taught me English and History and Mrs. Vakil, who taught me Geography. I loved them because once they taught me I didn’t feel the need to refer to my books, the topics were just embedded in my brain. Q: When did you decide that acting was what you wanted to do? A. Pretty recently. I got into films because of my mother’s persuasion but after I started making films at some point I realised that this is what I wanted to do. Q. What was the moment that made you realise? A. It was when I understood that being an actor is a much bigger responsibility. You become part of peoples’ households, they love you, and want you to become a bigger star and every star wants to become better for his fans. This relationship made me understand that what I was doing was better than I had supposed. Q. How did you get your break? A. It just fell into my lap, it was the film Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat by Salim uncle (Khan). Q. What advice would you give to acting aspirants? A. Today, entering films is more like a career opportunity; you can study acting, like editing, writing, Many become assistant directors and learn hands-on. Today, youngsters can choose. Earlier it was done due to influence or via theatre. Today it’s a respected profession, parents don’t look down upon it. Q. Which profession is better - one that you love or one that pays better? A. One that you love because when you work at something you love you want to better yourself but if you work for the pay cheque then you stagnate and you’ll never find out how much you can excel at your job. Q. What did you do with your first paycheck? A. I don’t know; it went to my parents. Q. Joys of your profession? A. The biggest joy I get is from my fans around the world, the relationship you build with your fans. Q. Do you have to be born an actor or can you learn? A. You can learn; that’s why you improve as you go along. |

Now, spot Bishakha with Rani Mukherjee GILL ROAD: When Saturday dawned, Bishakha Chandan of Gill Road had no clue that a random visit to a mall with her friend could change her life. She has won a contest organized at a mall on Ferozepur Road that will give her the dream opportunity to feature in an advertising campaign with Bollywood star Rani Mukherjee. On cloud nine, the BBA student of Guru Nanak Girls College said her mind is reeling with the possibilities this chance victory could bring her. "It is just a matter of pure chance that I went to the mall on Saturday morning, missing my tuitions and also somebody's wedding function, because my friend had to meet her friend at the mall,'' she said. Bishaka said Rani is one of her favourite stars and when she saw big posters of her around the mall she was curious to know what was going on. "Some of the organizers told me about the contest and asked me to participate in it. My only thought was why not give it a shot. It was my first time on the stage so I was a little nervous at the thought of doing a catwalk in front of everyone at the mall. Anyway, I gathered all my courage and did it,'' said the 20-year-old. The fashion industry and modelling have always fascinated Bishaka but she had never thought of pursuing her pet dream because nobody from her family had ever been involved with the glamour industry. Winning a contest to feature with Rani Mukherjee in an ad campaign has come as a big surprise to Bishakha Chandan. "This opportunity is like straight from God for me and I know it can turn my life around. I feel this could be the beginning for me in the fashion industry but for now, all I can think about is the day when I will see Rani face to face,'' she said. Bishakha's brother Gulshan Chandan said God has some big plan for his sister. "I believe her dream will come true and this commercial will work as the start of a journey to achieve many more milestones in the world of glamour,'' he added. |
