Coming Soon: Outdoor Bollywood Film Fest at SAAM by Michael van Baker on July 5, 2011 It’s an idea whose time has come, which makes sense, as the Bollywood Panorama Outdoor Film Series is sponsored by Seattle Asian Art Museum’s Gardner Center for Asian Art and Ideas. (The four Friday screenings are set to happen at the Volunteer Park amphitheatre unless it rains, in which case they’ll take place inside the museum.) Excitingly, the outdoor film festival comes with food trucks on July 22 and July 29: I Want Curry Now will pull up on both dates, with a side of Sweet Treats on July 22. Here’s where it gets really hot: Bollywood actress Tabu is kicking things off on Wednesday, July 6, at the Seattle Asian Art Museum’s Stimson Auditorium. That event comes with a special screening of Meenaxi, “a film featuring a writer enduring a creative dry spell who meets Meenaxi, a unique and mysterious muse.” Tabu plays the lead (she’s also starring in Ang Lee’s The Life of Pi, based on that book you saw everyone reading a few years ago). It’s 5:30 p.m. social hour, 6:30 p.m. Tabu-time, and 7:45 p.m. Meenaxi screening; tickets are $10 for SAM members, $15 non-members. Order by phone at 206-654-3121 or by email at boxoffice@seattleartmuseum.org. The fest itself is free. Outdoor Films at Volunteer Park Amphitheatre July 15: 9:30 p.m. Black (director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, 2005, 123 mins) Black portrays a blind and deaf girl (Rani Mukherji),and her relationship with her teacher(Amitabh Bachchan). Winner of the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Free. July 22: 9:30 p.m. Taal (“Music,” director Subhash Ghai, 1991, 181 mins) This story of love made complicated by the couple’s families revolves around a young singer and dancer (Aishwarya Rai). With an outstanding popular soundtrack, Taal was the first Indian film to reach Variety’s Top 20 in the U.S. Free. Plus: Brandon McIntosh on sarod with Chaz Hastings on table prior to the start of the movie. July 29: 9:30 p.m. Chandni Bar (director Madhur Bhandarkar, 2001, 150 mins) Tabu stars as a displaced village woman forced to become a dancer in a Bombay bar. Free. Aug. 5: 9:30 p.m. The Namesake (director Mira Nair, 2007, 122 mins) The son of Indian immigrants (Kal Penn) struggles with his parents (Tabu and Irffan Khan) and his own identity. Free. |

Rani Mukerji is unwell For those wondering about Rani Mukerji and her disappearance from the social scene, here's the goss. Apparently, the actress has been laid low by a severe bout of flu and was in bed for quite some time. We wish the pretty Rani a speedy recovery. |

Rani Mukerji latest to catch the size zero bug for new film Rani Mukherjee is set to don a new look, if rumours are to believed then the pretty actress will be shedding some weight for Reema Kagti's untitled project. Rani is all prepared to look slimmer for this particular role. But, our sources claim that the script for her forthcoming project requires her to look not just slim but also a lot leaner. A source says, " Rani was never into a size zero figure, but since the script demands so, she may have to lose some extra kilos." In most of her movies, Rani has always looked glamorous and healthy but she will have to work more on her figure now. " The film's release has been postponed till the next year, the production work is at an early stage, giving Rani enough time to work on herself to lose weight, and also get into the skin of her character," the source added. The film stars Aamir Khan as a cop while Kareena Kapoor will play the lead. Rani is likely to essay the role of a mother who has a small child. Though the initial shoot for the movie has already started, the rest of the shoot will take place by the end of this year. In the past Rani had to go for a complete makeover and lose weight for Karan Johar's super hit film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai , which proved a turning point in her career. |

About his only screen kiss, Amitabh Bachchan says, “I did kiss Rani Mukherji in Black but you can hardly call that a conventional romantic kiss. It was a very dark dramatic and poignant moment. But beyond that, sorry, no kissing or cursing for me.” |

A star-studded evening The sneak preview of choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant’s dance and music opus Taj Express was a snoop’s dream come true. On a faintly drizzly Sunday, B-wood personalities who don’t see eye to eye (make that contact lenses) were under the same roof at the ritzy Bhabha auditorium at the Tata NCPA complex. Decent quality wine and stronger spirits were served before the show which started half-an-hour late. Waiters in railway porter uniforms plied canapes ranging from corn-and-carrot fusions, marinated fish to diced chicken, the works. Bootpolishwallas gave free shines to those with muddied leather shoes. And the show itself was spectacular. Perhaps not the narrative line revolving around a young man’s search for love with a woman who’s in love with a caddish sort, a tourist guide. Shades of Guide? The ups and downs were marked by inspired and some truly eye-dazzling dance set-pieces performed by the lead players, Pulkit and Pallavi, and dozens of blingy-outfitted chorus dancers. The first row was occupied by Yash and Pam Chopra, right next to Rani Mukherjee’s dad. Umm, they weren’t exactly chatting away non-stop. Politeness was in the air. Rani, by the way, looked stunning with light make-up, a black dress and an uncharacteristically friendly attitude. She moved around, ensuring that all were seated in the correct rows and looked after. Vaibhavi and she are pals. Good to see Rani playing hostess with the mostest. Should do it more often. Abhishek Bachchan glowered in a tight-fitting jacket, said hello to estranged friend Rani, but hung around with Waheeda Rehman during the intermission. Sonam Kapoor, easily the best-dressed in the crowd, was sportingly introducing newcomer Shraddha Kapoor around. Anushka Sharma kept a distance from Ranveer Singh. No one paid him an iota of attention. He attempted to catch the eyes of Farah Khan who immediately turned 180 degrees. Wonder what make the Band Baaja boy so irritating. He’s earned himself the tag of Mr Avoidable No. 1. Bafflingly, Vaibhavi’s mentor (or muse?), Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was conspicuous by his absence. And so who stole the show? Old-timer Dalip Tahil, who was in high spirits, kept drubbing the musical, informing those who dared to come anywhere close to him, that he will be returning with Man of La Mancha. Oh oh, we’ve been warned, haven’t we? |

Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh give each other the cold shoulder Actors Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh, who are increasingly being talked about for their allegedly on-off relationship status seem to have given gossip mongers more reason to speculate on their love life. On Sunday, the duo showed up at an event in the city, but walked in separately — Ranveer sauntered in around 10 minutes before Anushka. And what followed inside, confused onlookers to the core. The two apparently didn’t bother to say the usual hi-hellos to each other and Anushka, it seems was busy buttering someone else present at the venue. A source present at the event says, “Anushka and Ranveer didn’t talk to each other. I don’t think they even greeted each other. Their aloofness was noticed by everyone present there and it was awkward. One expected them to at least acknowledge each other’s presence.” But not only did the two ignore each other, Anushka even made a desperate attempt to bond with her senior, actor Rani Mukerji and her family. Anushka, says the source, spent a lot of time chatting with Rani. “Anushka was treating Rani’s family like her own. We didn’t know that they were so close to each other. Rani seemed gracious towards her too and responded in an equally warm way,” says the source. So, what about speculation that Rani and Anushka didn’t see eye-to-eye because of rumours suggesting that hey had a thing for the same man - filmmaker Aditya Chopra? Not so long back, gossip mills had gone on an overdrive saying that Rani was upset with Anushka for many reasons, and the topping her list was the newbie’s apparent closeness with Aditya. And for those not in the know, Adi and Rani are apparently dating each other for quite some time now. “Well, only they will know the truth behind those rumours. But while all of us expected some friction between Rani and Anushka, one witnessed it between Ranveer and Anushka,” says the source. Anushka and Ranveer had always claimed that they were not dating but were good friends. But if their recent behaviour is anything to go by, can we assume that they are not even that anymore? “They’re very unpredictable. For all you know, they might be spotted cuddling each other very soon,” says another source. |

Priyanka Chopra plays peacemaker Rani Mukerji and director Kunal Kohli are not on great terms. After the actress worked with Kohli in Hum Tum (2004) and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008), their friendship soured. She felt that he'd sidelined her and promoted the other actress in the film Ameesha Patel, with whom he shared a close friendship at the time. Since then, they haven't been on talking terms. Priyanka Chopra, who is working in Kohli's next, wants to play peacemaker and patch them up. In a recent interview, when PC was asked who she would like to play peacemaker for, she said Rani and Kunal. Even though this is her first film with the director, Priyanka and Kunal have hit it off and she now wants the former friends to make up. An insider says, "It's true that Kunal and Rani no longer talk to each other. TPTM didn't turn out as expected, and Rani felt let down. During the promotion she felt the focus had been on Ameesha's item song, which upset Rani. She sent him an angry message, which he replied to in the same tone, and they never spoke after that." Enter Priyanka. She feels that Rani and Kunal should sort matters out and go back to being friends. While she hasn't made any moves to bring them together under one roof, she has discussed her plan with Kunal, who seems open to the idea. The big question is: Will Rani feel the same? |

Rani Mukherjee to lead NY India Day Parade July 4, 2011 in Community Post | 0 Comment NEW YORK: The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) last week, raised the curtains on its 31st annual Indian Independence Day Parade celebration with its traditional kick-off event at the Consulate General of India, New York. Celebrating the 41st anniversary, the FIA announced the annual parade to be held on Sunday August 21, which has now grown into the world’s largest Indian Independence Day celebration outside India. Last year more than 140,000 people gathered during the Parade on Madison Avenue in the heart of the New York City. At least 200 invited guests consisting of community leaders, sponsors, media partners and FIA committee members gathered during the unveiling of the parade. The program comprised folk dances and a presentation for sponsorship offering on various levels. “I am very excited and delighted with the enthusiasm of the FIA team and we are ready to take this year’s Parade to the next level, said FIA President Bipin Patel. “This year, we are looking forward to a record number of 150,000 participants in New York City.” FIA Trustee and Bollywood show organizer Kanu Chauhan announced that this year’s Parade Grand Marshall would be popular actress Rani Mukerji. The attendees were amazed to see the groundwork for the upcoming India Day parade, revealed through an audio-video presentation. The Publicity and Media Chair Binoy Kothari talked about the overwhelming inquiries, not only from community media but also from mainstream media about participation in the parade. The theme of this year’s parade is ‘My Earth-My Home’, celebrating ‘My India-My pride’. The 2011 India Day Parade will commence at 12:30 PM from Madison Avenue and 40th Street. The Review stand for the Bollywood celebrity Grand Marshall and the Chief Guest will be located between 28th and 29th Street. The booths will be located between 24th and 26th Avenue. The array of cultural programs will begin 3 PM onwards on the cultural stage set on 23rd Street. For those who cannot attend the parade, the FIA has arranged to show it Live on TV in North America and worldwide on the Internet. Each year during the India Day Parade, various organizations participate in a range of activities. Responding to last year’s overwhelming demand of booths, this year FIA is offering 72 booths to organizations to launch their products. The parade would be led by marching bands and theme based floats. The FIA said it would continue the tradition of customized floats showcasing Indian culture, as introduced last year. Parade attendees will take a journey into the past with colorful characters from historical and religious stories. The FIA is also inviting over 5000 young Indian American students from premium universities to march at the parade. During the month of the parade, street banners across the city will highlight the FIA and its sponsors and the Empire State building will be lit in the tri color of the Indian Flag. The parade would be followed by a gala dinner on August 22 where FIA has created special opportunities by creating zone sponsorships during the reception. |

Vishal Bhardwaj is gearing up for Daayan starring Emraan Hashmi By Subhash K. Jha, July 14, 2011 - 15:33 IST Emraan HashmiIt's Daayan all the way for Vishal Bhardwaj. After 2 States was thrown forward to 2012, Vishal Bhardwaj got busy with the 16 songs for Mira Nair's stage adaptation of Monsoon Wedding. But now plans have changed. Mira has suddenly got all the relevant permission to shoot for her delayed film The Reluctant Fundamentalist. As Mira gets busy with her feature film in August, Vishal will now shoot Daayan in the next couple of months. And the hunt for the three leading ladies is almost over. Says a source close to the project, "There are several leading ladies who have sent feelers to Vishal for the three roles. When Rani Mukherjee had been approached for one of the parts, it was presumed that one of the female characters was more pivotal than the other two. Not so. The minute it was made known that all the three leading ladies' parts were equally important a queue of girls showed up at Vishal's doorstep. Rather than being strapped for options Vishal is now spoilt for choices." The last we heard, Jacqueline Fernandez, Chitrangda Singh and Mahie Gill had been short listed for the three parts. The leading ladies have been duly informed that Emraan Hashmi remains. The rest of the cast is variable. It's Hashmi or nothing for Vishal Bhardwaj's film. After some A-lister heroines said no to working with Emraan Hashmi in the supernatural thriller Daayan, Vishal Bhardwaj and his producer Ekta Kapoor made it very clear that though the film had a feminine title, Emraan was their top priority in the cast. Says a source, "Both Vishal and Ekta believe Emraan is the fulcrum of the script and the only non-negotiable member of the cast. Vishal thinks Emraan has huge potential. He wanted to cast Emraan in 7 Khoon Maaf in the role that Irrfan Khan eventually did. That didn't work out. Contrary to the image that Emraan has of being a Mahesh Bhatt exclusive, he is in demand with several top notch filmmakers. Rohan Sippy who wanted to cast Emraan in Rana Daggubati's role in Dum Maaro Dum is casting Emraan in his next. Dibakar Bannerjee had an option of choosing between Katrina Kaif and Emraan for his new film Shanghai. Dibakar chose Emraan." You may or may not think Emraan Hashmi to be a major star. But Vishal Bhardwaj certainly thinks so. In Daayan he chose Hashmi over Rani Mukherjee. |

BUZZ STOP PROMISE KEPT RANI MUKERJI has kept her promise of appearing on Sourav Ganguly’s show. A few days back, when Aamir Khan played the crore game with Sourav, a special call was made to Rani in between the shoot. Rani, who shares a great rapport with the star, wished him all the luck and even told him how sure was she of Aamir winning a crore. It was then that Sourav urged her to come down for a special episode. “Sourav had said: What are you doing in Mumbai? You are a Bengali and you must come down to play the game. Rani said she will surely be part of the show,” said a source close to the unit. Known to keep her words, Rani will be in Kolkata today to shoot a special episode of “Ke Hobey Banglar Kotipati.” |

Rani Mukerji's secret desire Last Saturday night, Rani Mukerji and beau Aditya Chopra came together to help friend Vaibhavi Merchant with her sister, Shruti Merchant's dance show. While that set tongues in B-town wagging, in about exactly a week's time, the actor, who was in Kolkata, refuted nurturing marriage plans. Rani, in fact, had to face quite a few bouncers from Sourav Ganguly as she parked herself in the hotseat for "Ke Hobey Banglar Kotipati". Keeping a straight face, Rani owned up that her most favourite director is none other than Yash Chopra. On being prodded on marriage by the former India captain, Rani said she doesn't have immediate plans of tying the knot. Informs a source from the set, "When marriage came up as a subject of discussion, Rani said, she has left it in the hands of God. But the actor seemed pretty keen on motherhood. She told Sourav that she secretly had the desire to learn Kathak and if she has a daughter, she'll teach her the same. Rani also let out a family secret - she complained that her mother has always been a li'l partial towards brother Rajaa." When the conversation veered towards cricket, the actor said she loves the game and that's what made "Dil Bole Hadippa!" all the more special for her. When it was time to throw a googly at Dada, Rani insisted that he join her in singing "E kya bolti tu". The reticent Sourav, who was caught on a sticky wicket, had no other option but to oblige. Chirpy girl-next-door, no wonder Rani's the queen of all hearts. |

Rani Mukherjee to donate reality show prize money to charity Actress Rani Mukherjee, who has won a considerable amount of money on a reality show recently, has decided to donate the entire amount to charity. Though the hazel-eyed beauty has not yet come up with a final list of beneficiaries, it is expected that the money will go to the charities that are closest to her heart. “Rani has just come back from Kolkata where she went to take part in the Bengali version of Kaun Banega Crorepati. She was on the hot-seat and was being grilled by Sourav Ganguly (cricketer-turned-TV show host) who was the host of the quiz show,” says a close friend of the star. According to the friend, Mukherjee performed quite well in the first few rounds and quickly advanced to the more difficult rounds. “She performed quite well and she sailed at the initial rounds. She was there at the advanced rounds and managed to win quite a large amount of money.” The source added, “Whatever lakhs she has won in the show, she had made up her mind even before the show that she will be donating all the money to charity. Now she is making up her mind where and how much of the money will go to which charity.” Mukherjee already endorses the Indian Stroke Association, but there are quite a few other charities that she secretly donates to and doesn’t talk about. “There are some charities she doesn’t talk about, but she is happy that she could win some money which will be channelised to these charities,” a friend reveals. The star, who has just returned form a hush-hush holiday, is refreshed and raring to go, her friends say. “She is diving headlong into work now that she has come back. Her date diary is choked with work. She will be working all through the month. Rani is also very upbeat about the projects that she is doing and she will also make some announcements about her upcoming movies as and when they happen,” another friend informs. After the holiday, Mukherjee has got back to her yoga routine. “She is back to doing yoga and that’s her favourite form of workout. She does yoga at least for an hour everyday in the morning, ” her friend shares. |

Rani Mukerji goes gaga over Hrithik Roshan Rani Mukerji who has worked with Hrithik Roshan half a decade ago, seems to have re-discovered him after she saw his latest release. Says a source, "She recently watched the film and after that she has been gushing about his performance and his dancing to everyone else. Apart from messaging the actor, Rani called up all her friends including Karan Johar and gushed about how talented he was." High praise indeed from someone who herself is considered a super performer. Does this mean, we will see Rani and Duggu in a film together soon? well Adi and Karan can make it happen, no? |

Bollywood box office report The poster of 'Delhi Belly'. The poster of 'Delhi Belly'. A madcap star-driven jest-fest, an erotic crime thriller and a street-wise ensemble-cast comedy… these are the three films that have earned the most money for Bollywood in 2011 so far. If there is a lesson for the industry in its half-yearly report card, it is this: that while big is still beautiful at the box office, so are the bold, the brash and the experimental. No one understands this better than the makers of ‘Delhi Belly’. This is a film that’s as unconventional as unconventional gets. It’s in English with just a smattering of Hindi, the biggest name in its cast is a young Khan who is yet to gather a mass fan base, its promotions have been driven by one of the Hindi belt’s most commonly used cuss words and its sexual permissiveness has not been designed to genuflect before the traditional Hindi-film-going male used to viewing women as sources (not receivers) of pleasure. Yet, this Aamir Khan Productions and UTV venture is galloping along at the box-office in its original English and dubbed Hindi versions. Says Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures: “The success of films like ‘Ready’ and ‘Double Dhamaal’ tells us that the mainstream blockbuster commercial entertainer is not going anywhere. But the success of films like ‘Delhi Belly’ and ‘No One Killed Jessica’ also tells us that audiences today are open to new genres, new styles of storytelling, and that both styles of cinema can co-exist.” The point is underlined by 2011’s chart-toppers so far: ‘Ready’, ‘Murder2’, ‘Delhi Belly’, ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Haunted (3D)’, ‘No One Killed Jessica’, ‘Double Dhamaal’, ‘Faltu’ and ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’ in that order (source: boxofficeindia.com). There are lessons to be learnt from this list: Lesson 1- Comedy rules: Says ‘Double Dhamaal’ director Indra Kumar: “My film has done well although I don’t have a Khan or a festival like Diwali which coincided with its release.” What he did have though is laughter, the monarch of the box-office these days, as is evident from the success of the unapologetically slapstick ‘Ready’, the decidedly non-slapstick ‘Delhi Belly’, the Deol family showcase ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ and the star-less ‘Faltu’. Lesson 2- Know your star, know your star’s market: In 2009, producer Vashu Bhagnani launched his son Jackky with much fanfare in ‘Kal Kissne Dekha’, with disastrous results. The film contained all the ingredients traditionally perceived to be essential to a star son’s launch: songs, dances, fights, romance. This year, Bhagnani cleverly repositioned Jackky in the multi-non- starcast film Faltu in which the script was the real hero, not Jackky. It worked! Lesson 3- Never write off stars till they write themselves off: Rani Mukerji had been all but retired by popular perception when ‘No One Killed Jessica’ arrived in theatres. But the quality of this film’s content, the unusual decision to tastefully tell a story about a real-life episode still fresh in public memory and the Rani-Vidya Balan combination has resulted in one of 2011’s top grossers so far. NOKJ also busts a prevailing Bollywood myth, which brings us to… Lesson 4- Women-oriented films do work at the box office: “It’s time to take a re-look at the myth about heroine-centric films which is more a self-perpetuating myth,” admits Siddharth Roy Kapur of UTV. “For a while, if you’ve not had such films mounted at a large scale you will not have a commercial success and therefore you will continue to believe those films won’t work. But ‘Fashion’ and ‘No One Killed Jessica’ have proved that it’s possible to make a very commercial, very entertaining film with a female-led star cast and market it well to make it a significant success.” With sensible, niche-targeted, offbeat women-focused ventures back in the reckoning, perhaps it’s time to consider megabudget showcases for Bollywood’s female talent. “Now that you’ve put the idea in my head, I promise you that in the next couple of years I will make a big comedy with all the ingredients of a blockbuster with the action centred around a major heroine,” says Anees Bazmee, director of megahits such as ‘Ready’ and ‘Singh is Kinng’. How about a ‘Rani is Queen’? |

Mira Nair can't get a man to play Genghis! Mira Nair has always faced problems while casting the big wigs of Bollywood. When Mira wanted to cast Rani Mukherji for The Namesake , she was given a cold shoulder from the actress. Citing date problems Rani refused the role but she did come out in the media and stated that she did not accept the role merely because it was not worthwhile. And even Konkana Sen Sharma had turned down the offer. Finally Tabu agreed to do the role and even won the National Award for the movie. This time around it is Ranbir Kapoor who has given thumbs down to the filmmaker for the role of Genghis Khan in her film, Reluctant Fundamentalist . According to reports Ranbir has refused to do the role merely because he does not want to be a part of an international cast. "Mira has been following Ranbir for more than a year because she felt he would do justice to the role. After which even Prateik Babbar was approached and he has taken a screen test. "But as of now nothing has been finalised. Only time will tell who finally goes on board as Genghis Khan on the silver screen," says a source. Mira Nair remained unavailable for comment. |

Jobless Rani Mukerji woos Hrithik Roshan Hrithik Roshan seems to have found a new fan in Rani Mukerji. The Bong actress has been reportedly calling up friends to rave about Hrithik's performance in his new film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , and also recommending the film to them. Among friends Rani has been calling up buddy filmmaker Karan Johar. In an industry where the grapevine is quick to generate gossip, this has given rise to speculations that Karan might be planning to produce a film with Hrithik and Rani. Rani recently watched the film, and apparently liked Hrithik's role so much that she immediately sent him a text message raving about the film and performance. " Rani liked Hrithik's character in the film and also his flamenco dance moves. She called all her friends including Karan to discuss how well- crafted Hrithik's role was and how good he looked in the film," says a source. The actress, who is 33, is right now at a stage where her career seems to be going nowhere despite a brilliant performance in No One Killed Jessica earlier this year and despite her so called closeness to Yash Raj Films' ( YRF) head honcho, filmmaker Aditya Chopra. So Rani, who was last seen with Hrithik in the YRF- produced dud Mujhse Dosti Karoge in 2002, seems to be in the mood to reignite her ties with the in- form superstar. This development has come after the huge success of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , with the actress gushing about Hrithik and dropping hints on how she would want to be cast opposite him. Hrithik, though, has moved on in his career and is cast opposite the younger lot of actresses such as Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra. But Rani wants to be cast opposite an A- list actor to regain the star status she enjoyed a few years ago. Despite the lukewarm response to the Kunal Kohli- directed film Mujhse Dosti Karoge , the pair was appreciated for its chemistry. But the actors never got together again. These days, most actresses are trying to be associated with camps by bigger stars. Priyanka has been slotted into Shah Rukh Khan camp after Don 2 and a cameo in RA. One . Similarly, Katrina Kaif has been associated with the Salman Khan camp. Sources hinted that as Hrithik slot is still vacant, Rani would want to fit in. Let's wait and watch if Karan announces a film starring Hrithik and Rani. |

'Power of three drives Rani's money matters' MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Rani Mukherji believes in numerology when it comes to accepting or making payments. The amounts paid or received are mostly divisible by three, a reply by her accountant to the income tax (I-T) department has stated. This reply is part of the documents filed by the actor in the Bombay high court. Rani has challenged Income Tax Appellate Tribunal's addition of Rs 9 lakh to her income received for her 2001 film Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai. HC on July 1 admitted Rani's appeal and will decide if the addition is based on presumptions. A diary found by the I-T department during a search at her residence on September 26, 2000 show two entries of Rs 9 lakh and Rs 1 lakh for her role in the Anil Kapoor starrer Nayak. When the assessing officer sought an explanation, her accountant said, "Rani Mukherji's family believes in numerology. This must have been seen from the record that most of the payments and receipts are always divisible by 3. Thus, they accept amounts in 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 21, 36, etc, and also make payments in the same manner." Rani entered into a contract with Surya Movies for Rs 51 lakh for Nayak. On June 7, 2000, she received a signing amount of Rs 10 lakh. "But as they believe in numerology, they received Rs 9 lakh and Rs 1 lakh on the same day. Therefore, two separate entries were made in the diary." The department also seized cash and jewellery during the searches. The assessing officer (AO) held that "theory of numerology is an afterthought" and showed examples where Rani received payments such as Rs 95,000 for Hello Brother and Rs 1,51,000 for Hadd Kar Di Aapne. The AO made an addition of Rs 10 lakh to her income received for Nayak. But the commissioner to whom she appealed rejected the department plea. The tribunal, too, agreed with the commissioner. In Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai starring Abhishek Bachchan, Rani had shown Rs 27 lakh as remuneration received. The diary showed that she had asked for Rs 48 lakh as remuneration and received the contract amount of Rs 36 lakh. The AO questioned why the amount was not changed in the diary if there was a reduction and added Rs 21 lakh to her income. The commissioner of I-T (appeals) on June 23, 2008, also confirmed the addition of Rs 21 lakh. Rani's appeal before the ITAT said Rose Movies Combine on May 18, 2001, had sought to reduce the remuneration to Rs 27 lakh due to a crisis in the film industry. But ITAT's order stated there was no date mentioned in the letter and the reply requesting for reduction of remuneration and "the same has been accepted, seems unnatural as film stars are known to haggle for money to the last pie." The tribunal observed that when her father was so meticulous in maintaining the accounts as well as the dates, "there is no explanation why the amount of Rs 36 lakh was not changed to Rs 27 lakh." ITAT added Rs 9 lakh to her income but did not agree to the addition of Rs 21 lakh. ITAT in its January 7, 2010 order said it does not agree that the remuneration should be Rs 48 lakh because the figure of Rs 36 lakhs itself is noted in the diary against contract amount and the agreement is also of Rs 36 lakh. Rani has challenged this in the HC. |

Rani Mukerji “When I worked in Black, I interacted with a lot of people who were deaf and blind. That’s when I realised that what we think is a different world, for them it’s a very normal world. They are happy in this world where all their senses like smell, touch, taste, feel and sensitivity are magnified much more to replace that missing sight. The senses that we take for granted are valued and appreciated by them much more. They are very selfrespecting and confident people and they believe nothing is impossible in this world to achieve. There is a lot you can learn from them as I did during my interactions which has made me a better person. We should support them in any which way we can. God bless them.” |

Rani Mukherjee chooses Anurag Kashyap over Vishal Bhardwaj MUMBAI: We all know that Rani Mukherjee said no to Vishal Bhardwaj’s Daayan. And the real for it is Anurag Kashyap. The actress was pursued relentlessly until she agreed to the part in Sachin Kundalkar’s film, which Kashyap is producing. While Rani chose not to comment, her spokesperson told Businessofcinema.com, “Due to Reema Kagti’s project and this other film, she has no dates at all to allocate to Vishal Bhardwaj. Contrary to rumours neither the title Daayan nor her co-star Emraan Hashmi had anything to do with her inability to do the film.” A source adds, “We haven’t had a significant North-South love story since K Balachander’s Ek Duuje Ke Liye. Rani has not done a true blue love story since Hum Tum in 2004. If you notice, all her films in recent times have been either based on social issues or have featured her in unconventional heroine-centric roles. Even her last film No One Killed Jessica was off-mainstream. Rani was dying to do a state-of-the-art love story. When director Sachin Kundalkar came up with the offer to do this film she immediately said yes.” Kundalkar, whose earlier film Gandh in Marathi, generated tremendous curiously acclaim, informs, “Anurag and I are very close friends. You could say he’s the moderator on the project. I’ve written the film and will be directing it.” Both Anurag Kashyap and Sachin Kundalkar were sure that they wanted Rani Mukherjee for the female protagonist’s part. |

Bollywood Film: Rani was the first choice for ‘Dangerous Ishq’ Karisma Kapoor is making her a powerful comeback with Vikram Bhatt’s ‘Dangerous Ishq’ is what the world is aware about, but what not many know is that the first choice for the role was Rani Mukerji. Rani, who has woked with Vikram Bhatt in ‘Ghulam’ had been approached by Bhatt for his 3D film but apparently the actress denied doing the film. Bhatt thought of making ‘Dangerous Ishq’, post he got a huge response for his 3D film ‘Haunted’. The film will now portray Karisma playing characters in five different eras. The film is touted to be a smashing comeback for Ms Kapoor who went on a sabbatical post her marriage and delivering two kids. Reportedly, Karisma was really impressed by the script that Rani rejected. Rani is choosing films rather carefully after her bumper hit ‘No one Killed Jessica’. |
