Bollywod stars happy after getting Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards

Mumbai, May 3 (IANS) From veteran actor Dharmendra to newcomer Ranveer Singh – quite a few actors from the Hindi film industry were honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards Tuesday.

The event was attended by Rani Mukerji, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Sonakshi Sinha, Rekha and Asha Parekh, among others. However, Aamir Khan, who was supposed to attend the show, decided to skip it.

Dharmendra was bestowed with the Phalke Ratan, Asha Parekh received the legendary icon cine artist award, Rani got outstanding performance in the film award for ‘No One Killed Jessica’ and Priyanka received memorable performance award for ’7 Khoon Maaf’.

‘I felt really nice getting this award because this is an award from our industry. I’m very happy,’ Asha Parekh told reporters here.

Echoing a similar stance, Rani said: ‘This is my first award for ‘Jessica…’ and that too this award. So I’m very happy.’

Anushka was honoured for the excellent performance in the film ‘Band Baaja Baarat’ and her co-actor of the film got the best debut award.

‘I’m truly elated and it’s a very prestigious award because he is the visionary of the Indian film industry and to get such an honour at such a young age for me is extremely motivating and encouraging and I hope that whatever little I’m trying to do in the industry, if it makes even slightest of mark, it will make me happy,’ said Anushka.

Added Ranveer: ‘Quite clearly this is the most prestigious award that I’ve received till now. It’s a very big day for me. Its amazing to be here and to be receiving this award.’

The best debutant award was bagged by Sonakshi Sinha for ‘Dabangg’ and Arbaaz Khan got the best debut producer award for the same film.

Veteran actor Dara Singh was also honoured with the senior most cine artist award.

While the men came dressed in suits, the actresses flaunted colourful saris.

Her sleekly styled long dark hair draped her back. She let her dreamy honey brown eyes be the focus of her mesmerizing look. She wore cat eye liner and statement gold specs eyeshadow. Frosty pink lipgloss and a black bindi rounded her gorgeous look.

Rani to be queen of mafia!
Renuka Vyavahare, TNN | May 5, 2011, 12.56pm IST

The occasion was the launch of a non-fiction book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai', based on women gangsters of the Mumbai underworld, by noted crime journalist Hussain Zaidi at a bookstore in Mumbai.

From Kamathipura to Dongri, from assassins to molls, the book is a collection that tells the stories of women who have become legends in Mumbai's streets, lanes and back-alleys. Absorbingly told, impeccably researched, Mafia Queens of Mumbai reveals a side of Mumbai's underworld that has never been seen before.

Actress Rani Mukherjee and filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj were the special guests who unveiled the book for the renowned author whose previous work includes the much acclaimed 'Black Friday: The True Story of the Bombay Bomb Blasts' which was later made into a film by Anurag Kashyap.

Guess Rani's recent portrayal of a crime journalist in 'No one killed Jessica' made her an apt choice to launch the book. Draped in a beautiful saffron sari, the actress told TOI, "I would love to play a mafia queen in a gangster film which will hopefully be an adaptation of this book. I've never played such a character and this seems to be the perfect opportunity."

We are told Rani's co-star Vidya Balan too was apparently invited but the actress couldn't make it owing to her busy shooting schedule.

After playing a crime journalist in "No one killed Jessica", we’re sure Rani can do justice to the mafia too!

Good luck Jhansi Ki ‘Rani’!

Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee and Film-maker Vishal Bharadwaj launched Veteran Journalist Hussain Zaidi’s new book titled ‘Mafia Queens, stories of the women from ganglands’ here last night. The 308 page book, which chronicles the stories of 13 women who turned into a life of organised crime, is set to be adapted into a film as well with Bharadwaj having already shown a desire to pick up a chapter from the book into a movie. ‘I am totally fascinated with Zaidi’s writing and cinematic vision in the book. The most appealing fact about his writing is that he, without being judgemental, puts just facts in the most interesting manner”, said Bharadwaj after launching the book. Aishwarya Rai will have company at Cannes
Published: Sunday, May 8, 2011, 18:12 IST

First it was just Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Freida Pinto and Mallika Sherawat who were supposed to represent India on a global platform, by walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival that begins this May 11.

Then the news of other B-towners like Saif Ali Khan and Minissha Lamba flying to the French Riviera cropped up. Obviously, everybody was excited at the prospects of an increased Indian presence at the international festival. Now, it turns out that adding to the list will be film-maker Karan Johar, actor Rani Mukerji, fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukerji and filmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.

Sources in the know say that the trio are being flown to Cannes by the same brand that Saif will represent there this year. “Last year they had taken Deepika Padukone and Rohit Bal. The brand apparently wants to be responsible for the maximum Bolly presence at Cannes this year,” says a source.

While most actors are keeping details about their outfits a heavily guarded secret, it has been made known that Sabya will be designing for and styling Rani’s look for the event. “Saif will be there on the 11th. But KJo, Sabya and Rani will be there on the 18th. All of them will be at the festival for just one day. The brand is also hosting an after party there, which Saif will attend. But the trio’s itinerary is not yet finalised,” says the source adding that if things go as planned KJo might even deliver a talk on Indian cinema there. But that’s just the tentative plan.

SABYA AT CANNES

SABYASACHI MUKHERJEE is making his debut at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Sabya confirmed, “I am going to Cannes with Rani Mukerji. We are leaving on May 17, and it’s a one day touch-and-go trip. It’s a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity... Even though it’s funny for someone like me to make a red carpet appearance. We were of the opinion that she should do a Indian look, and I am currently creating a few pieces for her. The look would be unconventional but extremely Indian.”

Sabya’s date with Rani on Cannes red carpet
- Designer describes debut with muse at glam festival as a classic case of ‘beauty and the beast’

May 2010: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan makes waves in a Sabyasachi sari on the Cannes red carpet.

May 2011: Sabyasachi makes waves on the Cannes red carpet with Rani Mukherjee in a Sabyasachi, of course, by his side.

The Calcutta connection at the famed Festival de Cannes just got stronger — and more fashionable. On May 18, the city’s most celebrated designer will take France’s most celebrated red carpet along with his BFF (best friend forever). Yes, that’s Rani Mukerji, who wore the Sabya look in Black, No One Killed Jessica, Baabul and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, and with whom she shares more than just a Bong connection.

Mr M & Ms M have been picked by Chivas as their designer-muse duo to walk the red carpet. Last year, Rohit Bal and Deepika Padukone were the chosen ones. While Rani is presumably quite poised, preened and pouted about her Cannes debut, Sabyasachi can’t stop seeing the funny side of things. “It’s hilarious. Such a classic case of beauty and the beast!”

Having said that, Sabya is “extremely proud” to be a part of Team India at Cannes. “I think it is fantastic for us to be invited. The number of Indians going to Cannes is increasing and that just makes you realise the growing importance of the Hindi film industry,” he tells Metro.

It’s pointless to ask ‘who’ the two will be wearing on the red carpet, but the ‘what’ remains to be seen. The designer has decided to don a black kurta with a sherwani over white churidars and black Oxfords. “It definitely had to be something Indian, something simple, something khadi and in conservative colours like black and white.” While describing his outfit to Metro, he improvised an addition and asked his factory to make him a “nice” embroidered shawl that he “might or might not” carry.

For his muse-in-arms Rani, it will be a Sabya sari and her look will simple, classic and oh-so-retro. Though the details are under wraps, we do know that four net saris are being made at the designer’s Topsia workshop. A look test will be done later in Mumbai. “Since net is thin and flimsy, it won’t overwhelm Rani’s petite frame. The look will be an eclectic balance of conservatism and sexiness. She is a very beautiful woman and anything overdone doesn’t work for her. But I would really love to add a little bit of Frida Kahlo [the Mexican artist being his “perfect muse”] to the look. Maybe the hair…”

Though Sabya appears shy and almost reluctant during the customary bow at the end of each catwalk showing, the red carpet is not making any butterflies flutter in his stomach. Yet. “I am only interested in who all I might be able to spot!” The special someone the weaver of dreams is hoping to bump into? Madonna. “Oh, that would be such a dream!”

RANI AND HER TAILOR

The actress will wear Sabyasachi on her sleeve on the Cannes red carpet

The latest Indian celebrity to join this year’s Cannes march is an unlikely candidate — Rani Mukerji. The actress — alongside friends Karan Johar and Sabyasachi Mukherjee who is also styling the actress — will be walking the red carpet for Chivas on May 18. “Rani is delighted to walk the red carpet at Cannes for Chivas and is being styled by Sabyasachi,” said Rani’s spokesperson.

Until 2006, Rani shared a warm association with Bollywood’s popular stylist Manish Malhotra. It was when her contemporaries, like Kajol, Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor, also started wearing Manish, she decided to break the monotony. Ever since, the actress has been wearing a lot of Sabyasachi garments both in films and otherwise.

The designer has had Rani walk the ramp as a showstopper on several occasions. Rani hasn’t yet seen the outfit the designer has picked out for her but she is likely to dress Indian.

Rani and Sabya makes Cannes debut
By: Anju Gupta, Feme Fashions Bureau, Mumbai Dt: 05/11/2011

Rani Mukherjee and Sabyasachi Mukherjee will be making their Cannes debut this year. They have been picked by Chivas as their
designer-muse duo to walk the red carpet.

As usual, Sabya is doing the outfits for Rani and both are very excited about this. It is said that Rani is planning to wear a simple sari and will sport a classic look inspired from the yesteryear.

Most probably Rani will be wearing a net sari and she will take a call after trying the four saris that Sabya has made for her.

Rani Mukherjee steps into list of Cannes Film Festival

When Hollywood goes on holiday, it likes nowhere better than the French Riviera and the Cannes Film Festival. Bollywood takes it as an honour to be the part of this Cannes Film Festival. Surprisingly this year the list goes long, even Rani Mukherjee gets a chance to be the part of this list.

Earlier, the festival was a showcase for new movies and talent, but for the past 64 years it's been as much about fashion and fun as it has been about film. The list of Indian representatives at Cannes 2011 includes the former Miss World turned actress, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and the newbie Sonam Kapoor will be gracing the festival as the brand ambassadors of L'Oreal. Actress Rani Mukherjee has also made it to the list.

Rani Mukherjee and the filmmaker Karan Johar, will be seen walking the Chivas red carpet on May 18. The actress has already started preparing for the starry occasion. Well, as known pretty well, the competition gets stiffer because when it comes to looks everyone tries to look gorgeous.

The other two Bollywood stars who will be shinning at Cannes will be Saif ali Khan and Minissha Lamba. This time Bollywood is highly elated with this long list invited at Cannes.

Rani Mukerji to Walk the Chivas Red Carpet at Cannes

You remember how we told you about Saif Ali Khan walking the Cannes red carpet for Chivas Regal today at the opening ceremony. Now, the latest to join the Bollywood Cannes brigade is Rani Mukerji who has also been invited by Chivas Regal to walk the prestigious haloed carpet on the 18th of May. The global luxury brand feels that Rani is an extremely versatile and charismatic celebrity. Chivas chose Rani as they believe she would make the ideal ambassador for their ‘Live with Chivalry’ philosophy. We are hoping that this Bengali beauty manages to look stunning in a traditional avatar unlike Rohit Bal’s saree for Deepika Padukone at Cannes last year which did not flatter her curves but seemed like a safe option.

Here’s the buzz on Rani’s look and styling for the Cannes; Rani’s spokesperson informed the media that designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee who styled Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s look for Cannes last year will be working on her look for the event. (He’s one of our MissMalini Fashion Awards leaders too, did you vote?)
MissMalini says: I’m sure her style-twin Vidya Balan would approve!

She will be walking the carpet alongside dear friend, Karan Johar. Other Indian celebrities on the red carpet this year include Ronnie Screwvala, Sonam Kapoor, Minnisha Lamba, Mallika Sherawat and Freida Pinto, apart from the Cannes-regular Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan who will announce her film Heroine directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. We’re going to bring you all the Cannes action as it happens. So, here’s wishing that our Bollywood babes don’t mess with the fashion police and manage to leave a lasting impression at Cannes this year!

Rani cancels her Cannes visit
Renuka Vyavahare, TNN | May 12, 2011, 06.43pm IST

The actress won't be going to Cannes with Sabya anymore.

One of the finest actresses of Bollywood, all eyes were on Rani Mukherjee's first Cannes appearance which was scheduled for May 18th.

Rani was all set to attend the festival along with good friend and ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. With the rest opting for western wear, all were hoping to see the queen of Bollywood dazzle in a sari.

Rani too was all set to give her fans what they want. She had zeroed in on wearing a Sabya sari for the mega event. Everything was set.

The actress however informed Chivas today that she won't be attending the festival. She has cancelled her visit owing to her dad's health issues.

Our source close to Rani confirmed, "Rani won't be going to Cannes anymore. Her dad is unwell and she doesn't want to leave him at this point."
