Rani Mukherjee's close connection with Harbhajan
Monday, September 14, 2009, 10:33 [IST]
By Raymond Ronamai

Everybody knows that Rani Mukherjee plays a Sardar in her upcoming release Dil Bole Hadippa but very few will know her special connection with a real Sardar in Indian Cricketer Harbhajan Singh. No, they are not having affair. It's just that Rani copied Harbhajan in the film.

Well, Rani Mukherjee sent the photo of Harbhajan to her make-up man who is from London. She sent his photo, as he didn't know how exactly a Sardar looks. Consequently, Rani's look in Dil Bole Hadippa was greatly influenced by the photo she sent.

And Rani revealed that she had told Harbhajan about the story of his photo. The ace Indian cricketer is fine about it all for the simple reason that it's Rani who has copied him.

Rani acts with Shahid Kapoor in her upcoming release Dil Bole Hadippa, produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films and directed by Anurag Singh. It is all set for release this Friday, 18th September.

Preview: Dil Bole Hadippa
Indo Asian News Service
Monday, September 14, 2009 (New Delhi)

After starring in back-to-back duds like Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Saawariya and doing a few cameos in the last two years, Bengali beauty Rani Mukerji returns to the big screen in a new avatar in Dil Bole Hadippa!. Releasing this Friday, the film will see the actress playing a man too!

Produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films (YRF), the romantic comedy is the directorial debut of Anurag Singh, who has been an associate director for five films with filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and with Sanjay Gadhvi for Dhooom 2.

The movie also marks the entry of Shahid Kapoor into the YRF camp. He is paired opposite Rani.

The film tells the story of Veera (Rani), a fire-cracker of a girl who lives in a small village but dreams of playing cricket in the big league. Rohan (Shahid) is an accomplished captain of a county cricket team in England and returns to India to captain his father's cricket team, which has been losing consecutively since the last eight years.

In a village where girls don't play cricket, Veera has to wear a turban and beard to disguise herself as a man to fulfil her dreams. Her brilliance on the field earns her rave points and an entry into Rohan's team.

"There is something which the film says very subtly because preachy films can be really boring. Dil Bole Hadippa!; is very entertaining and in the end, it just leaves you with a thought," Shahid had said.

The 31-year-old actress also hit the gym in vengeance for her toned look in the movie.

"Rani is very committed towards her body and her dedication has resulted in mind-blowing results. She is looking outstanding," celebrity trainer Satyadev 'Satya' Chaurasia said.

Debutant director Anurag Singh says the film has been shot entirely in villages.

"There is no trace of any city or skyscrapers in it. We did all our shooting in villages outside Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Amritsar over 80 days," he said.

Asked why he chose Rani and Shahid for the lead role, he said: "I wanted to bring in a pair which had never worked together before. There is some sort of freshness about Rani and Shahid working together. There was instant chemistry between the two," he added.

The film has had its share of controversies too. Initially, the title of the film was Hadippa but the rights to the same had been bought by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali who refused to part with it on YRFs request. The movie title was then announced to be Dil Bole Hadippa!

Then the Punjabi Cultural And Heritage Board showed displeasure over Rani's character in the film donning a patka instead of a pagdi, since an adult Sikh normally wears a pagdi and not a patka.

The Sikh community also raised objection regarding the use of a patka sign in place of a dot on letter 'I' in the movie title ...Hadippa.

Apparently, this is YRF's second film on a sport after their hockey-centric 2007 hit Chak De! India. Also starring Anupam Kher and Dalip Tahil along with item girls Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn Chopra, the movie premiered at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival.

Toronto International Film Festival features Rani Mukherjee
Pam Bhandari
Sep. 13, 2009

Rani Mukerji walked the red carpet on September 13 when her film Dil Bole Hadippa was screened. This is the grand event for the Bangla babe as this is her first Bollywood film after a two-year long hiatus. Fans are keen to see how she will play the dual roles of a Sikh male cricketer and a Punjabi kudi in the film.

Rani looked great as walked her cat way. She was tired but made it look great.

“Dil Bole Hadippa", became the first Bollywood film to premiere at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) before its release in India.

Present in Toronto, Canada, was the film’s leading lady Rani Mukerji and debutant director Anurag Singh.

Seen here is the duo posing for a portrait during the “Dil Bole Hadippa" photo call at The Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto on September 13.

“I am over the moon at this privilege given to 'Dil Bole Hadippa',” Anurag Singh had said earlier.

He certainly is looking pleased, but it’s Rani we can’t help admiring. We rarely see in a gown, she’s looking stunning.

Rani’s Hadippa moment in Toronto

Fans in Toronto showered adulation on Rani

By ApunKaChoice
Mon, Sep 14, 2009 12:51:19 GMT

Over a dozen Punjabi Bhangra dancers flanked her as Rani Mukherjee walked the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival for the world premiere of her upcoming film Dil Bole Hadippa on Sunday.

Bollywood fans thronged the venue in hordes and packed up the Roy Thomson Hall in downtown Toronto to the rafters. On the carpet itself Rani was greeted by hundreds of fans who sought her autograph and asked to pose with her for photographs.

“I really love the audience in Toronto…I'm nervous, I'm excited and I'm extremely honoured to be here. I have a deep emotional connect with my fans. They have stood by me through my low phase. I owe a lot to them. I hope they enjoy Dil Bole Hadippa as much as we enjoyed making it,” Rani told a news agency.

The 31-year-old actress wore an eye-catching off-shoulder purple gown.

Before the screening of the film, Cameron Bailey, co-director, Toronto International Film Festival, told the audience: “We love the colour, the energy, the music and the spirit of Bollywood and ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ captures all that to perfection.”

Rani was accompanied by the film’s director Anurag Singh. Her co-star Shahid Kapur, however, could not attend the premiere because he’s promoting the film in India ahead of its release this Friday.

‘Boy’ Rani discovers a world apart
- Roles juggled without ‘jiggling’

AMIT ROY

London, Sept. 14: Rani Mukerji today listed before London media the hurdles she had to cross to dress up as a young man in order to be accepted into a men’s cricket team in her new film, Dil Bole Hadippa.

She had to train hard for six months, lose weight and tone her body “because I did not want anything jiggling about on the field”, the actress said after steeling herself to answer even “vulgar questions” about anatomy as this was a “light-hearted” media conference to promote the film.

“I said ‘jiggling’, not ‘ jingling’,” she clarified to one journalist who did not quite grasp the challenge Rani faced. “I did not want anything jiggling from the back as well,” she added.

“Sportspeople have to be very fit,” she further explained, throwing in a detail that “I like cross-dressing”.

Shakespeare had the same idea when Viola in Twelfth Night had to disguise herself as Cesario. But this time, Rani’s character, Veera Kaur, has to put on a moustache and male clothes to pass herself off as Veer Pratap Singh to get into a team skippered by Rohan, played by the “very handsome Shahid Kapoor”.

The main difference between a man and a woman, Rani said in response to one question, was “I had to stand with my legs apart —that’s the difference”.

Before she started preparing for her role, her interest in cricket was strictly limited, Rani said. “I found it boring. I did not even know how to hold a bat.”

After six months’ coaching, though not from a famous cricketer, her interest in the game has grown — “I can even watch a cricket match” — but not to the extent that she would invest Preity Zina-style in an IPL team.

“I’m not that rich, you need lots and lots of money for that,” she pointed out. “I don’t have any money in the bank.”

Aditya Chopra organises screening of Dil Bole Hadippa! for Rani's family
By: Shaheen Parkar Date: 2009-09-15 Place: Mumbai

It is well known that the Yash Raj Films folk do not have numerous private screenings (as most filmmakers do) for the cast, special guests and others associated with the production.

But there can be exceptions to the YRF rule, especially when it involves Rani Mukerji, considering her proximity to them.

Adi's initiative
It is learnt that producer Aditya Chopra had a special screening of Dil Bole Hadippa for the actress and her family recently. Along with Rani, her parents Krishna and Ram Mukerji as well as her brother Raja and his wife Jyoti were present.

Says a source, "Normally, such a screening of a YRF project would never happen. But Aditya himself organised a screening of the movie exclusively for the Mukerjis at the YRF studios." Buzz doing the B-Town rounds is that Raja has been raving about his sister's performance ever since.

Dekha hai
When asked about the Hadippa screening, Raja admits, "Yes, we have seen the movie some time back at a private screening."

He adds, "It is one of Rani's best performances. Every actor has those three or four films that he/she is best remembered for. Dil Bole Hadippa will be one such film for her. She is superb in it."
And it is not just a dear brother speaking. "Seeing is believing," he says.

Bas karo, Lara!

It's time someone told our actors and actresses that Twitter is not a tool to promote their films. Most of them just yak and yak about their films.

The website is an interacting tool, not a promotional one. Lara Dutta can take lessons from Gul Panag, who is always so interesting to read. While Lara's tweets are making us Blue...

Here's a sample:

* on 31st August Tomorrow is going to be a tough shoot and I've got to get back in the water after a long break since Blue!!! I love the sea though!!! :-)
* on 6th September Thank you everyone who has given me feedback on the Aaj Dil promo from Blue.
* on 9th September Music of Blue is in the stores tomorrow!!!!!
* on 14th September The thunder today is outstanding!! Missed all of this while in London! New promo for Blue out today on TV channels. The Blue theme! Enjoy!

Oops!

Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji are soooo busy promoting their films (Wanted and Dil Bole Hadippa respectively) that they have been paying scant regard to their appearance.

Check out Sallu's hair at a talk show and Rani's shirt, which seems to have popped a button!

"Both Aamir and SRK came on my first day of shoot for Dil Bole Hadippa" - Rani Mukherjee

By Devansh Patel, September 15, 2009 - 11:46 IST

Rani Mukherjee has a glow about her. It's not just the glow of success. It's her first film after twelve months. Her glow also comes from liking who she is, knowing what she wants and keeping her priorities razor-straight - Family and films. I recall the last time I met her in London. The image of Mukherjee that sticks is the one with the reluctant, limp handshake and grumpy, yawning pout, muttering to her PA, "What is this for? What are we doing?" That was then. Today the woman is knackered but confident to switch on her old charm in Dil Bole Hadippa which releases this Friday. Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent and UK's Harrow Observer columnist brings you an exclusive excerpt from the expert on her comeback film after a year, her first day of the shoot with Aamir and SRK, the flood which destroyed her set and her being surrounded by a bunch of 'S' people - Shahid, Sherlyn and Sawant.

What was the initial reaction to the trailers?
My friends are all biased towards me and they love whenever they see my movies and my trailer but in the last few films of mine, I don't think I saw that excitement from them. With DBH, I saw excited reactions from my friends and my family.

Your experience with debutant director Anurag Singh?
Anurag is very simple by nature. He is very religious. Whenever he used to get the file of his shot division, he always had a Sai Baba photo and a Durga Mata photo in it. After seeing that, I felt that this faith of his will definitely be fruitful for all of us and DBH.

Any memorable experience while shooting for DBH?
It was my first schedule for DBH. We were shooting the song 'Bhangra Bistar' and I had this get up where I am supposed to be a man. It so happened co incidentally that SRK was shooting for RNBDJ and Aamir was shooting an ad at YRF at the same time and both of them looked at my guy avatar and they were quiet taken aback by the looks. Aamir came and helped me put my moustache. That was so sweet of him. Both SRK and Aamir were eager to see what I am doing in the song and came and gave their blessings on the sets. It was really sweet because Aamir and SRK are two very special people in my life and by them being on the set on my first day of the shoot, I just felt blessed.

So how was Shahid Kapoor?
He is extremely hard working, dedicated and a very sincere actor. By nature, he is very serious in what he does. I think that is what is going to take him a long way. He knows the medium of cinema. He is always very clued and glued on. He is really an asset to the film. Having Shahid in the film makes the film very fresh, very contemporary. He is looking so good in the film, that every time he would come on the set, I would tell him 'Oh my God Shahid, you are looking so handsome!' and he used to always get embarrassed. I think the first time I met Shahid was on a Pepsi advert that I did with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol way back in 1998. That time Shahid was one of the dancers for Shiamak. He reminded me again that the memory he has of mine is of the night when we were shooting the advert. I just came and ruffled his hair and he remembers that very fondly. I told him it's not changed. Even now I'll come and ruffle your hair. I think the entire crew of Hadippa, has worked like little kids trying to get our school project right, so that our teacher, which has to be Aditya Chopra, sees our project report and says, 'OK this project is really good'. So we are all trying to make him happy.

Another S - Sherlyn Chopra?
Sherlyn is a very good actress. I never expected that she would do so well because she was very prepared when she came on the set. I have seen her videos and she is a very good looking lady but when she shot with me, we were all very pleasantly surprised because we saw that she can do even more. This is what I studied from my seniors and the colleagues I have worked with. When I was new and I worked with Aamir and SRK, they used to inspire me to do my best. I think I did the same because I felt she needs a little motivation.

One more to go. S for Sawant...Rakhi Sawant?
Rakhi is very entertaining off and on the sets. She is basically a very entertaining person, but this time when I met her for DBH, I saw another side of her where she came across as serious, which is different from what I know of her and see on TV. She is a very nice person to work with. She is very professional. She is very hard working and of course that shows in her work. Not only Rakhi, even Vrajesh has done a nice job. He is there with me in most parts of the film, because he plays my friend. He is very funny. He used to come up with these one liners. He was also great to work with and a very good actor.

Any fond memories after pack up?
I have so many fond memories, especially the Punjab schedule because we were there for nearly two months. It was really smooth shooting in Chandigarh because the police there was really accommodating and even the people of Chandigarh. Amritsar was good too. I think Punjab is one of the best places to shoot in India because it is really very easy to shoot there. Punjab is known for its food and for its people. I think the food in Punjab is absolutely delicious. On our way back to our Hotel, we would stop at the dhabas and used to have, believe it or not, maggi noodles and masala chai. Can't get better out of Punjab, can you? It will always be the best.

What about your fitness regime?
It was quite a health conscious unit. Shahid is a lot into workout. I was also working out because I was playing this character in the film who had to look physically fit. Then there was Shudeep da who was doing his cardio regularly. I also introduced Vaibhavi to Yoga at that point in time. The only fact that remained constant was that Anurag never came to the gym. We never saw him in the gym. He never came to look after his health even once. He was only eating and eating and shooting and eating. But he has promised that by the next film he will lose all his weight and is going to gym with us, if we are there in his next movie.

Tell us a little about the set getting destroyed.
I remember that twice we had a problem during the shooting of the songs. I don't know why but we were destined to have problems when were shooting the songs. Probably because Anurag was making us work really hard and was not giving us any break, so may be it was God's way of giving us a break and of course we can't fight against nature, can we? When 'Discowale Khisko' was being shot, we were all very geared up for the next day's shoot and early in the morning I got a call from Bhushan, who is the Production Executive saying that please don't leave for shooting because the set we had created for 'Bhangra Bistar' has got flooded. We discovered that at three in the morning, Anurag woke up hearing the storm and called Bhushan to go and check if everything was ok on the set that we created, but unfortunately the whole place was flooded. Vaibhavi was very sure that she wanted a dry set because it was a dance song and none of the dancers or the actors would be able to dance in wet conditions. While shooting for 'Ishq Hi Hai Rab', we were tortured by heavy rainfall.

Which character of yours was more fun to play?
For me, playing Veer was very challenging because it's something that I have not played before. I am playing another gender in the film. I play a man, something new for me. I enjoyed it a lot more than playing Veera because Veera is like playing my character again, or something I have done before. Even Veera's character is challenging but if I had to choose between the two, I would choose Veer. And strangely, even unit members used to behave very friendly with me when I was Veer, and when I used to become Veera , they will again be very respectful and in control. I really enjoyed being a boy on Hadippa - it was really fun because Jay and Aparajita who are the writers have etched out the character of Veer really well. This is a character which I am going to cherish throughout my career.

Are you ready to join the cricket team with the extensive training?
No, I am not ready to join the cricket team because that's not happening for me. I think, I can just about hit the ball with my bat and that is my achievement. It is something I wanted to do very sincerely because we have made a film for a cricket loving nation. I was really sure that whoever watches me play cricket on screen should not say that I hit a shot badly. I am hoping that the hard work that I have put in all my practice sessions for cricket supersede my fears of people not accepting me as a cricketer.

How much did you prepare for the role?
I think acting comes naturally to me. I don't know how but I think its God's gift to me. The only thing I worked on is on my cricket because that was one territory which I didn't know well. I didn't know how to hold a bat correctly, I didn't know how my stance should be as a cricketer, I didn't know to walk with the pads on. All this required a lot of training. It required me to learn the sport.

Was getting into Veer's look time consuming?
I used to get really sick and terrified when I used to get up in the morning and play Veer because I knew there will be glue on my face and there is going to be something stuck on my face and being a girl I am not used facial hair or something sticking to our face or upper lip. So that was the only thing that made me so uncomfortable. The stress would start during pack up time. It is a more extensive process to remove the beard than to put. For removing you have to put those weird smelly lotions that you can't breathe with. I used to literally stop my breath till the time they used to remove the beard from my face. That was the most painful moment. But I guess, there is no gain without pain.

What should the audience expect from Dil Bole Hadippa?
I feel this movie is an effort from our sides where we have put in all our love, hard work, and creativity and have made this film like little babies. I just feel they should not come with expectations; they should just come to enjoy the film. I am coming out with a movie after a year. My last release was Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. I am extremely close, extremely emotional about this movie. I have not done any film in this time. I have put in all my energy and hard work for this movie. It was a difficult film to do, to be a boy, to play cricket. I have done a lot to prepare for this role. I hope when they come to see my film after a year, they are not disappointed and shouldn't go unsatisfied.

DBH - Review

By Filmicafe.com, 14 September 2009

By Samia Siddiqui

Following the phenomenal success of New York, Yash Raj Films returns with the much anticipated 'Dil Bole Hadippa'. With many expectations and questions tied to the film. Will Yash Raj`s winning streak continue after the success of New York? Will Rani Mukherjee be able to deliver an equally stellar performance as Veer and Veera? Is the Rani and Shahid Jodi`s chemistry quotient high? The plethora of questions are answered with a resounding-Yes! Dil Bole Hadippa is a highly enjoyable, light-hearted family film with a theme that connects with one and all-Cricket.

The film does give one a sense of déjà vu with the essence of a typical Yash Raj Film where you are taken back to the days of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Veer Zaara and many other Yash Raj classics. Dil Bole Hadippa is a light hearted romantic comedy which touches on serious issues in our society such as gender biases and inequality existent in society, but does so in a very light-hearted manner.

Veera (Rani Mukherjee) lives in Amritsar with her Uncle where they coordinate for an Art/Dance show to make a decent living. Despite having a 'Nautanki' show where you have Shanno (Rakhi Sawant) stealing the hearts of all the men, Veera dreams about playing cricket in the big leagues with Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. In short Veera is a small town girl with big dreams and she eats, breaths and sleeps 'CRICKET'.

Rohan (Shahid Kapoor) lives with his mom Yamini (Poonam Dhillon) in England. He`s an all rounder for English County Team. Rohan is Indian at heart but is a foreigner outwardly. Due to unforeseen circumstance Rohan parents are separated but the bond between the father and son continues. Rohan comes back to India to help his dad Chaudhry Vikramjeet Singh (Anupam Kher) who has dream to win the Aman Cup (Peace Cup) but has been on a losing streak for the past 8 yrs. Rohan takes up the challenge to make winners out of the 'Indian Tigers'. Sheer circumstances turn Veera into Veer to break the barrier to fulfilling and living a dream and what follows is hilarious, touching and moving all in one breath.

Will Veera be able to pull the double role 'Veer' convincingly without being caught?

Will Rohan be successful in fulfilling his dad's dream?

Will Veera finally achieve her dream of being a cricketer?

Anurag Singh makes a confident directorial debut with Dil Bole Hadippa. From the first frame till the climax the director definitely delivers a promising debut venture. The emotional sequences are well executed and the comedic scenes are absolutely hilarious reflective of sincerity and immense maturity.

The film could have been crisper in terms of editing and scripting. The film has its share of faults which make you wonder such as Why Shahid Kapoor who plays an NRI from England didn’t have a British accent? Rani’s speech where she is trying to convey a message to the crowd is not as compelling as it could have been. Furthermore, the film has a lot of resemblance with previous Yash Raj Films and may leave a segment of the audiences looking for something hatke a tad discontented.

The film works because of the equation between Shahid and Rani. The two wonderfully complement each other and their love story is pinned not as a conventional candy floss tale but the story is told in a delicate manner. After the success of Kaminey, Shahid`s portrayal as Rohan introduces a new age romantic hero.

Rani fits the roles of Veera and Veer to the T! The body language and the right accent required to play a 'Bindaas' Sardarji is challenging to say the least but Rani pulls the character off with such ease, it is a stellar performance from the actress and should definitely win her many hearts and accolades. Rani as Veer makes you fall in love with the character so much so that you find yourself forgetting at times that it is actually Veera playing Veer.

The supporting cast: Rakhi Sawant, Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil, Poonam Dhillon, Sherlyn Chopra are first rate and add a freshness to the film. The music of the film by Pritam brings the earthy feeling of Punjab which is incorporated well with the story of the film. Ishq Hi Rab Hai and Discowale Kisko being the pick of the lot.

The film should prove to be lucky for the Yash Raj Films banner. The film will be facing fierce competition at the box-office from the Salman Khan starrer, Wanted. Who emerges as the winner will be upto the audiences’ verdict. Dil Bole Hadippa is a simple, inspiring tale of hope which makes one feel joyful and cherry and will your heart go Hadippa!

Box office sees scanty collection

New releases bring no respite
By ApunKaChoice

After another weekend with not so big releases, Bollywood box office continues to suffer. Audiences are yet not queuing up at the ticket windows. The Bobby Deol and Kangana Ranaut starrer Vada Raha… I Promise and newcomer Soham’s Baabarr opened to very poor collection of 5-10 % while the other two films Aamras and Ruslaan managed only 0-5% collection.

Whereas, previous releases Fox and Three - Love, Lies And Betrayal have been disasters with their meager collection. Moreover, the collection of Kaminey remained average in the week; the movie added Rs 2.25 crore approx while running its course to the fifth week. Unexpectedly, a movie like Life Partner is going steady at the box office and has done business of around Rs 1.75 crore. The collections of both ‘Kaminey’ and ‘Life Partner’ are acting as balm for the box office.

Now, all eyes are riveted on this weekend. Wanted, starring Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia, and Dil Bole Hadippa, starring Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee are expected to get a mammoth opening, thanks to the long weekend due to the national holiday for Eid on Monday.

Let’s see whether these two big releases put an end to the box office blues in Bollywood.

Rani happy with Toronto response to 'Dil Bole Hadippa'

Actress Rani Mukherjee, who is returning to the big screen after a gap of one year, is over the moon with the positive response to her upcoming movie 'Dil Bole Hadippa' at the ongoing Toronto film festival.

The actress, whose last film 'Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic' in 2008 failed to create any magic at the box office, has now pinned her hopes on 'Haddipa' and says that audience response at the festival was "very very comforting".

"People seem to love the movie. It was very very comforting. I am really happy and would like to thank the people of Canada," Rani, who returned here after attending the world premiere of the movie, said at a press conference in London.

The actress is playing the role of a man for the first time in her career in 'Dil Bole Hadippa', which stars Shahid Kapoor as a cricket coach.

"For the first time I was playing the role of a man, that also of a Sardar. It came naturally to me. I had a lot of Sardar friends in school. I picked up a lot from them.”

Dil Bole Haddipa screened exclusively for Rani parivar
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, September 15, 2009]

Although few days are left for it release, Rani Mukherji’s family was treated with a special screening of ‘Dil Bole Haddipa’.

Sources say that normally, such a screening of an YRF project would never happen. But Aditya Chopra himself organised a screening of the movie exclusively for the Mukerjis at the YRF studios.

The movie’s leading Rani was accompanied by her parents, her brother Raja and his wife. Since then the brother is really impressed with his sister’s performance and states that it is one her best ones. Every actor has those three or four films that he/she is best remembered for and this movie will be one such film for her, said Raja.

Well, we surely have to give in to him, for Rani has given her best efforts for this one. Rani had not only tried a male get-up but also tried mastering a game (cricket) which is had no interest in at all before.

We really wish with ‘Dil Bole Haddipa’ Rani starts ruling again!

Dil Bole Hadippa is a cut or two above the routine masala films'

Arthur J Pais in Toronto

Sitting in the classroom, Anurag Singh often looked at the blackboard which often turned into a movie screen in his imagination.

"And on that white movie screen," he says laughing, "I would recollect scenes -- and at times an entire film -- I had seen the previous night."

He is relaxing in his hotel suite in Toronto; a couple of days later he would walk the red carpet with Rani Mukerji at the gala premiere of his film Dil Bole Hadippa!

"I think it was my karma to be a filmmaker," Singh says. "I did not really care for my studies and my friend Hrithik Roshan took me aside and said many years ago, 'Nothing enters your head but the movies. I will take you to my father and see if you can work under him'."

Singh went on to assist Rakesh Roshan on six films including Karan Arjun, Koyla and King Uncle.

"People ask me if I was worried directing a star like Rani Mukerji [in Dil Bole Hadippa!]," he says. "I had no fear at all. I had narrated the entire screenplay, even with musical cues, to Rani and Shahid [Kapoor] -- only then they had accepted the film."

As the shooting continued, the stars would ask him if a particular scene he had narrated to them was going to be shot -- or it had been dropped.

"Their attention to detail was amazing," Singh adds.

The movie, produced by Yash Raj Films, was one of the half a dozen Indian films shown at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"As an assistant director, I have interacted with many big stars and I have discovered that actors are like clay," Singh muses. "A director who is good at his craft knows how to shape the clay, and the actors respect such a director even if it is his first film."

It is commonly thought that Hadippa! is his first directorial vehicle; hardly anybody knows his first, Rafeeq, released two years ago. He has also produced Jurm (2005) and Hum To Mohabbat Karega (2005), which he admits were not successful.

"But there were people in the industry who had faith in me and that is why I have made this big film, which to my utter surprise is getting a red carpet at this festival," says Singh.

His father N P Singh produced half a dozen films including the hit Dev Anand and Zeenat Amman movie Warrant, directed by Pramod Chakraborty. "From my childhood, I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps."

There were also other reasons: A number of his close friends were also thinking of joining the industry as actors, producers or directors.

"I have known Aditya Chopra [producer and director of hits like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi,] from our school days in Juhu [a Mumbai suburb]," he continues, often breaking into Hindi. He speaks so softly one wonders how he could yell 'Cut' or 'Action'!

"For many years, Adi [Aditya Chopra] and I along with one or two friends would watch an Indian film every Friday," Singh continues. " For quite some time he has been telling me that I should direct a film for his company, Yash Raj."

Singh says he is shy of doing interviews and wants the film to speak for itself. And yet the fact that it is getting a red carpet gala in Toronto has helped him get rid of some of the shyness. He has been told that filmmakers go to a festival not with just their films but to make press appearances and do interviews.

"It is a masala film and none of us is apologizing for it," he says. "But I am sure that like any Yash Raj film this is a cut or two above the routine masala films."

He has been longing to make a film set entirely in rural areas, with cricket being one of the important characters.

"I don't think you will see a single town building in the film," he says. "We went to the most remote parts of Punjab. And that is why the budget for this film is like a big budget city-shot film."

Punjab is yet another character in the film, in which a cricket crazy young woman (played by Mukerji) has to disguise as a man to play the game, so that the village elders are not displeased seeing a woman cricketer.
"I decided on Punjab as the location because anything connected with Punjab, particularly the music and dance, resonates across India," says Singh, whose family comes from Uttar Pradesh. "And at Yash Raj they know this too well."

He could have asked any of his buddies including Hrithik Roshan to play the lead. "But I wanted to create magic with a new casting, and when I saw Shahid in Jab We Met, I knew I had my hero!"

Was he worried at any point during the shooting that several of Mukerji's films had flopped recently?

"It never bothered me," he says. "I know what flops are. But most important is the fact that many of us in the film industry know that no one, not even a very big star, is wholly responsible for the success or the failure of a film. It is the final product that matters."

A good movie is an organic process, he says.

"Whatever story we propose to tell on the screen should be told with efficiency. There should be a lot of entertainment but with all the glamour, high tech and great acting if a film cannot touch hearts of fans, it cannot really succeed at the box office. This is one of the lessons I learned from Rakesh Roshan. He makes a sci-fi film or two [like Koi Mil Gaya ] but those films have high emotional content and that is why they are so successful. At the end of the day, Indian audiences want to see a film that stirs their hearts."
