‘I never believe in keeping my plans to myself’ April 16, 2011 12:22:46 AM RANI MUKERJI says all awards are equally important to her and that she has no plans to get married soon. DIVYA KAUSHIK reports She is one of the best examples from a handful of actors in tinsel town who know how to play it safe and the one who believes in “smile and let it go”. So no matter how many times the actor was asked about her marriage plans (in the pipeline for sometime now) and how much we tried to enquire about her upcoming projects, all she said was, “Right now, I’m shooting for a film with Aamir Khan and I should not be talking about projects I’m unsure of. Being an actor, I know it is impossible to keep things under wraps for long and people will know about everything at the ‘right’ time. And I’m waiting for that time,” said Rani who looked fab in fuschia sari with a mustard border. In the Capital to receive the FICCI Ladies Organisation’s Young Achiever Award at The Lalit Hotel, the 33-year-old actor revealed, “I think this is my 62nd award” but on a serious note, Rani, who last appeared in No One Killed Jessica, said every award is close to her heart. “They motivate you to perform better and give you that required recognition. The best part about such ceremonies is that they give you an opportunity to share platform with the best,” said Rani. She rubbished claims of trying her hand at filmmaking. “I think I’ll continue acting for the next 80-90 years. Direction is a complex process and one needs to learn a lot of things. Right now, I’m doing what I’m most passionate about — acting. If in case at any point of time of my life I’d feel I need to make a shift from acting then I’d love to declare it. I never believe in keeping my plans to myself.” Rani has been supporting the cause of female foeticide and is associated with a number of NGOs. “I’ll do anything and everything possible to support a cause. Why I started supporting the cause of female foeticide strongly was because I thought it is necessary to spread the message across that girls are as important as boys. I think we need to generate an understanding among one and all on why we need girl child in our society. I would like to add that girls are more capable of taking ahead the family legacy and make their loved ones happy. Being a girl myself, I think I’ve made my parents proud,” concluded Rani. |

Rani, Rekha bond in town Yesteryear diva Rekha, 56, known to be a very private person, made a rare appearance in the Capital on Thursday night. The actor was greeted by modern-day diva Rani Mukerji, 33, who was also there to grace the asiaSpa India awards, held at The Claridges in Surajkund. The two were seen exchangi ng not just hugs and pleasantries, but also compliments. “Rani was in awe of Rekha’s beauty while Rekha couldn’t stop praising Rani for her work,” said a guest at the do. The warmth between Rani, dressed in a red-and-gold bordered white sari, and Rekha, draped in her signature Kanjeevaram, was noteworthy. While Rani bowed and touched Rekha’s feet out of respect, the latter couldn’t help but hold Rani in a long embrace and shower her with kisses all over her face. Rani was overheard saying how Rekha has set a ‘benchmark in beauty’, while the senior actor called Rani a ‘gorgeous, fabulous actor’. Once the ceremony was over, Rani retired to her room in the hotel, but Rekha hurried to her car to avoid further attention from the camera flashes. |

Rani Mukerji goes back to school? Not to endorse a cause, product or a film, this time Rani Mukerji made time from her busy schedule to visit her school, Maneckji Cooper, for its annual day function. The last time the actor set her foot in the building was in 1993 on the day she passed out of class 10. “Not everyone lands an o pportunity to return to their school as chief guests. I felt blessed. I met a couple of my teachers again. A few, I found out, had passed away. I went around the classrooms and the corridors,” Rani reminisces. “I spent my most stress-free days there. Everyone owes the foundation of their lives to their schools. I’m not any different. I have to thank my geography teacher Mrs Vakil. It’s because of what she taught me and the way she taught it, that I’m good with every place I travel to.” The actor’s knee-high niece, whom she lovingly calls Mishti, has just started attending school. Does she find a striking difference in the textbooks she read and the kind her niece carries to her school? Rani“She is very young. As the years go by, the difference between the process she goes through and the one I went through, will get clear,” Rani points out. “But I’m sure that kids today don’t have a bag as heavy as ours. Schools seem more vigilant about that. I still remember I had four thick textbooks for both, math and science. They made the bag really heavy.” But for Shiksha, a project that aims to build schools all over the country for underprivileged kids, Rani has only lent her name. On being asked why, she argues, “The project is well-funded by a leading corporate house. I don’t think they need money from me. Whenever and wherever they need me to be present, I’ll be there. But we’re not involving money in this. Also, I don’t think I should go to every place where the project builds a school, because the media’s focus would shift to me instead of the cause.” |

Prizey moments! Garima Sharma AGE’S A NUMBER: When women get together, they certainly create a din, but at this event, all of it was taken in good spirit. Women achievers from various walks of life were honoured for excellence in their chosen field of work, and their friends and the guests present ensured that they made the right amount of noise to cheer them at the Young Women Achievers Awards hosted by the Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO). The chief guest, politico Kumari Selja, and the guest of honour, Renu Sud Karnad, both spoke to all the winners about their achievements, as YFLO members including Promila Bahri, Vasvi Bharat Ramand Ranjana Aggarwalensured that the event went through smoothly. AATI KYA DILLI: Rani Mukerji was clearly the centre of attraction and not even for a minute did the actress stop smiling, perhaps because of the award – excellence in cinema – that she was getting here. During her speech, she said that awards always make her want to work harder. A while later, we saw Censor Board member Aruna Mukim chatting with Rani about her latest “No One Killed Jessica” which was shot in Delhi. DESIGNER GAMES: Designer Namrata Joshipura was among those felicitated, right after Surinder Kaur, captain of the Indian women’s hockey team. Talking about the award, she said, “I used to play hockey for Delhi state, and when I had applied for admission in DU, I was selected for the junior India team. But then I joined NIFT. Therefore, this award feels doubly special as I am sharing it on this platform with the captain of the Indian women’s hockey team.” LADIES INC: The audience at the event could’ve been mistaken for one at a brunch or a designer soiree, but the guests made all the difference – for once, they weren’t in the mood for social chit chats. Everyone, including Rani, was busy talking about the NGOs they work for, or support, and how entrepreneurial ideas can help solve social problems. Businesswoman Pooja Jain also spoke to us about her social work, and emphasised that the YFLO event is one of the few social dos that she makes it to. SPOTTED: Manvi Dhillon,Namita Devidayal,Divya Suri Singh, Payal Kapoor,Priya Jain,Anjali Bhardwaj |

Everyone wants to be Rani Mukerji's asst dir After TOI broke the story that Rani Mukerji is set to turn director, she has started getting calls from people, asking her if they can assist her on the film. Even though Rani asserted in the interview that she hasn't decided when she will wield the megaphone on the set, she has a list of possible assistant directors who want to work with her. The actress is amused, as she has no script, no starcast, but she has a partial crew in place, whenever she is ready to get behind the camera. She, says, "It's very sweet of people to wish to work for me but it will be a long wait for them. I'm currently focussing just on my acting." Guys, please note. |

Badnaam Munni brings us naam Front Page News Melb Lord Mayor thrilled with growing Indian links Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle with Mitu Bhowmick-Lange, director of the Indian Film Festival Mind Blowing Films, the organisers of the recently concluded Indian Film Festival formally presented Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Robert Doyle with a certificate from the Guinness Book of Records after securing a place for Melbourne in the record books. Over 1230 visitors to the festival danced for three continuous minutes to the latest Bollywood rage Munni Badnaam Hui from the blockbuster Dabangg, cheered on by the movie’s star Malaika Arora Khan herself. As the Mayor proudly pointed out, this quirky moment of fun-in-the-sun was also worth celebrating for the serious achievement it had made in restoring the image of Melbourne in the eyes of India and Indians. The city had a major PR concern at hand after the students’ issue made the headlines in 2009. The Lord Mayor had played gracious host to the stars visiting from Mumbai at this year’s festival as well as last year’s. He also enquired after Rani Mukherjee, last year’s crowd puller, with whom he had hit it off so well that Indian Link’s Preeti Jabbal had quipped, “Move over Bunty aur Bubli, it’s now Robert aur Rani!” |

Rani thrilled about starring with Aamir Actor Rani Mukerji just can’t stop beaming. She is about to rub shoulders with her Ghulam (1998) and The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey (2005) co-star Aamir Khan again, this time in Reema Kagti’s next film, Zakhmi. “That’s the next film I’m doing. It’s amazing because I’v e always loved to work with Aamir, and now that I’m doing a film with him again, it’ll bring back the memories of all the times that we’ve shared during Ghulam and The Rising...,” says the 33-year-old, who will be honoured by the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy for her ‘outstanding performance’ as a scribe in her last outing, No One Killed Jessica. “He has become a great friend over the course of years, and it feels nice to work with him again,” adds the actor, who was in the Capital for the asiaSpa India awards. Starry sense of style Be it grotesquely grungy or gorgeously glamorous, it’s all there. And like it or not, Bollywood fashion does majorly influence the dress code of the nation. Even hoity-toity designers score a hit at the Fashion Weeks (which are multiplying faster than frisky rabbits), only when a film personality assents to be their show-stopper. Of course, the tinsel celebrities charge a bomb to do the honours. Notable exceptions, like Salman Khan donate their ramp fees to charity. And on occasion, Kareena Kapoor, the Bachchans, and Katrina Kaif add their star power gratis to designers like Manish Malhotra, Abu-Sandeep, Rocky S, Neeta Lulla and Vikram Phadnis. Such generosity apart, ramp struts ensure cheques in lakhs. Vis-ŕ-vis film fashion of the heroines, there’s a glut of excessive embroidery suitable for bridal wear, blingy jackets, fussy folds-’n’-pleats, retro layers, and studded denim skirts as well as hot pants which far too often reveal murderous thighs. At the B-town parties, inevitably, scores of paparazzi jostle to flash-click photos of the new gowns in town. Instantaneously, the self-appointed media fashion police zero in on uncoordinated accessories or boo-boos like Shilpa Shetty and some wanna- impress starlet fetching up, at the same hour, in lookalie tomato-red tunics. Perhaps great figures dress alike. The point is that at this very moment, Bollywood couture has gone stagnant. Brochures and high-end catalogues from New York, Milano and Paris aren’t inspiring our movie designers any more — perhaps because the styles du jour in the west are either starkly minimalist or over-the-top funky. TV soap operas persist in flaunting mostly tubby women in gold and brocade sarees. Moanwhile the movies opt for the anything-goes mode. Since no one designer supervises the entire look of any film, brinjal purples collide with strawberry pinks. And sunflower yellows combat ripe tangerines. Honestly ever so often, you wish you’d carried glares to the multiplex. Proof: Golmaal 3, Tees Maar Khan, Dil Toh Bacha Hai Ji, Patiala House and Thank You. Er, no thank you really. Kolkata’s much-celebrated whiz kid, Sabyasachi Mukherejee is associated with the admittedly eye-catching saris draped around Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan. Still, that’s where it’s been since the last three years: The ethnic chic six-yards of Balan are now, as predictable as mangoes in summer. As for Mukherjee, she has moved on, eye-bogglingly to satiny, ankle-covering, cleavage-hinting gowns more appropriate for red-carpet walks at award ceremonies than for afternoon-tea-‘n’-biscuit press conferences. Quite curiously, earlier this year Sridevi showed up at an awards do in a satiny number, revealing shoulder blades and her back right down to the waistline. And to think, she had once set the trend of single colour chiffons and figure-camouflaging Amrapali ensembles via smouldering dances in Jaanbaaz, Chandni and Mr India. Sigh. Madhuri Dixit strives to keep her glamour quotient switched on with saris that are much too fussy and loud (canary yellow, if you please). A decade-and-a-half ago, she could have carried off any colour — including that wedding sangeet sari in purple in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! Today, at the age of 43, she could do with subtler dress sense and elegant accessories. Now, why on earth am I carping about fashion of all things? Simply because film-makers spend lakhs and lakhs on the colours-‘n’-cuts you see up there in larger-than-life 35 mm. For Yash and Aditya Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Karan Johar, clothes maketh the movies, as much as the dramatic twists and turns in their scripts. They have a point. After all, viewers crave to escape into silken fantasies. On the other hand, Ram Gopal Varma, Madhur Bhandarkar (okay, his Fashion was all frilled up because of its theme), and Anurag Kashyap don’t care a fit whether their heroines wear gunny sacks or slit sarongs. Incidentally, western wear is rarely designed. Pret-a-porter is “sourced” from sales in the stores of New York, London, Dubai, Bangkok and even some stores in Mumbai’s suburb of Bandra. “Sourced” means shopping sprees by top-name designers, accompanied by their assistants to carry the stuffed bags from the shops to the airports and then to the studios. An absurdly lazy designer once even showed up just an hour before a film’s shoot, carrying a “choice” of dozen jeans of exactly the same size, colour and brand. “Guess I was pubbing too much in London,” he murmured in self-defence. Film fashion from the 1960s onwards has been influential, be it the salwar kameezes of Saira Banu in Junglee, Sadhana’s swishy shararas in Mere Mehboob, Rekha’s entire wardrobe in Silsila, Urmila Matondkar’s leg-friendly minis in Rangeela, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s saris in Devdas. Today, film designers may be owners of swishy retail boutique owners and Page 3 staples. Clearly, this makes them a must-buy on the list of NRIs visiting India. Yet, these designers lack that distinctive signature of master creators. Sorry to say, but nine times out of ten, the heaps of kurtis, tunics, salwars and saris are of the copycat variety. No meows intended. Sonam Kapoor (accent on the young and trendy), Lara Dutta (on occasion) and Deepika Padukone (white becomes her) are about the only heroines who come close to being fashion savvy. Preity Zinta was pretty sharp too, but knock knock, where is she? Lately Kangana Ranaut has been yelling from the terracetops that she’s a fashion diva. Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif preen and pout incessantly. Frankly, they merely make you yearn for that era when fashion was synonymous with that natural born attitude — of being dressed to kill. |

Seems like SLB was very much upset with Rani for taking away the title "Hadippa" & hearing Rani-Adi simultaneously force me to remember the thing I want to forget..He can easily take actor's or director's name also instead choose to take producer & heroine's name..such that rani was deciding on the title of the film.. =================== From Sanjay Leela Bhansali interview : Your friendship with Rani soured after she used the title of your sister's film for her own film. You felt betrayed... n Yes, I was upset with the title going because I had kept the title Hadippa for Bela's film. Rani wanted it, but I said it was not possible. So they simply added two words Dil Bole in front of Hadippa and used it. I thought that was not done. But that does not mean I am upset with Rani or Adi (Aditya Chopra) or anybody else. It's done. It's gone. I have forgotten about it. Rani is a very, very dear friend. We still have long conversations. I go to her house and she visits me. It's as beautiful as it was before because I realised we have experienced so much together. She has done Black for me. I don't want to forget anyone be it — Salman, Aishwarya, Hrithik or SRK — who gave beautiful performances in my films. I will always be grateful and thankful to them. I will always stand by them. Ajay Devgn's character in Singham is called Bajirao. Inspired from your title, you think? I'll be making Bajirao Mastani, and I am upset about a character in another film being called that. But I can't do anything about it. It is their choice. But they didn't approach me for my title. They could have spoken to me at least, as it is a project that is very near and dear to me. I have lived with it and been creating it for years. Ajay is a very fine man, and I feel taking titles or creating characters out of others titles should not happen in the industry. Just because I have not done a movie, doesn't mean you can just take it. It's just not the right attitude. There are many other names to call a character. This is what I'd told Rani, 'Today if you are doing it, tomorrow someone else will do it.' If I know that Mani Ratnam is making a film called Raavan, I will not call my character Ra.One. At least not before his film comes out. This industry operates without having a code of conduct, and that's just not right. |

Rani Faces Questions “I’m a simple person who wants to lead a simple life in the complex world of cinema. I knew this is difficult because life can get pretty complicated here. But I’m not waiting anxiously for something great or dramatic to happen to me. It’s the little, little things that make me smile. I’d be happy even if someone handed me a glass of water.” This what Rani Mukherjee told Praveena Bharadwaj in a 40 questions interview. The above was in response to the question how would you describe yourself? Here are some of the questions and answers. Q: What’s the motto you live by? ‘Live life to the fullest. Never hurt anyone and concentrate on creating love and laughter.’ Q: Does commitment scare you? “Not at all . Because the level of your commitment reflects your involvement and confidence. You can’t be a coward and run away. You have to be committed to whatever you do in life.’ Q: Can you tell us three unknown facts about yourself? “I’m very lazy and laid back, have a terrible temper and can bake amazing cakes.’ Q: How old were you when you fell in love for the first time? ‘I think I was 11 or 12. Please don’t ask me for the name of the person because he is married now. Q: Which is the most beautiful part of your body? ‘My heart. Those close to me feel I have a heart of gold.’ Q: When and where were you most embarrassed? I’m embarrassed whenever I see myself on screen. Because all those emotions are forced, not real. They make me squirm.’ Q: If you could change one thing about your body, what would it be? ‘ My height. I’d give anything for a few inches more’. Q: What’s the one thing in your life you’d like to get rid of? ‘Fake people, they make me feel sick.’ Q: What’s the cutest thing about you? ‘Me, myself, the whole of me. I think I’m cute’. Q: Are you a better actress on-screen or off-screen? On screen of course. Acting is only for the screen, not for real life. In fact, I find it difficult to act off-screen’ Q: What’s the worst thing about being an actress? ‘That you have to act constantly, in reel and real life. To the extent that you start asking yourself, am I acting or am I being my normal self.’ Q: What are the three best things about being an actress? ‘ Name, fame and money’. Q: What is the weirdest thing you’ve put in your mouth? Artificial blood during action scenes. Sometimes it’s coloured water and sometimes cough syrup. Uuuughhh. Q: Which lyrics truly mean something to you? The title song of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai- Tum Paas Aaye, Yun Muskuraaye, Tum Ne NA Jaane Kya sapne dikkaye…… Q: Who do you think is the sexiest man in the industry? ‘Shah Rukh Khan. My all time favourite is Mr Amitabh Bachchan, but right now it’s SRK’. Q: If your dream man and you were struck on a lonely island, what would you do? ‘I’d call the dream unitwallahs and ask them to shoot a song on that very location- for our eyes only.’ Q: Do you believe in God? ‘Oh yes. He is the Almighty. He is everywhere. He keeps an eye on us constantly. I fear Him.’ Q: What is your idea of a perfect, romantic day? Spending time with the person I love. We could be in Switzerland or anywhere else for that matter.’ |

From Debasree roy intewrview who is contesting in Election : Star power: My niece Rani (Mukerji) had planned to come here and campaign for me but she has been busy with her shooting and being an actress myself, I understand her commitments. Rani has been wishing me luck, saying: ‘Tui jitbi (You will win)!” A lot of people have supported my campaign — Sandhyadi (Roy), Haranath Chakraborty, Debika Mukherjee, Sanghamitra Banerjee, Rajesh Sharma, Soham, Lama, Bappi Lahiri.... They have always loved and supported me. My rallies have attracted crowds of 20,000, all of them locals and not outsiders like those they brought in for Brinda Karat. |

South Indian stars off to Bollywood Published: Saturday, Apr 30, 2011, 14:46 IST | Updated: Saturday, Apr 30, 2011, 14:46 IST It couldn’t have been a better calling for actor Prithviraj. The newly-wed Malayalam actor has lady luck shining on him and how. Barely two days after his wedding, Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap confirmed Prithviraj’s much speculated debut in Bollywood — believe it or not — with Rani Mukerji as his co-star. Anurag, who himself has been busy since he’s tying the knot this weekend, told us, “This untitled production will be directed by Sachin Kundalkar. Prithviraj will indeed be making his debut with this film. Rani Mukerji will co-star alongside him.” Sachin has so far directed some award-winning short films. Anurag, who is currently working on his next film, Gangs Of Wasseypur, says, “This film is scheduled to take off sometime in September. We’re waiting for Prithviraj to finish the Malayalam films that he’s given nod to before us before we start off.” Prithviraj, whose Bollywood debut has been on the cards for a while, had initially denied reports of him starring in this film. “Prithviraj did not want to confirm until everything was finalised. He is a little superstitious that way, where he doesn’t talk about his newer projects until they go on floors,” says a source close to him. It is also learnt that Mukerjee should mostly be done with her commitments towards Reema Kagti’s Zakhmi alongside Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor by September. Let’s wait and see how this new pair sizzles on screen. |
