'Rani made a mistake by refusing my film'

Karan Johar's chat show has become a platform for B-Townies to speak their minds. The latest to do so was Zoya Akhtar. The director who appeared on the show with brother Farhan Akhtar took the opportunity to tell Rani Mukerji that she made a mistake by refusing her film, Luck By Chance. Zoya declared, "If I were in Rani's place, I wouldn't have refused the film." Does Rani feel the same way after knowing what happened to the flick? She sure couldn't have felt worse knowing what happened to Dil Bole Hadippa.

“I’ve been married off 12 times – I’m scared when it really happens no one will attend!”

March 30, 2011 by FSJ

There’s a hint of mystery to her, courtesy her YRF links, that adds to her allure. Rare appearances by ravishing Rani at B’wood bashes turns heads for more than one reason since she’s always unescorted.

Reclusive is a word now being used for this once-bubbly, friendly star. She emerges from her ivory tower only when there’s a release to promote. “Today promoting a film has become as big an exercise as working on a film!”

No One Killed Jessica has got Rani Mukherjee, we won’t say a new lease of life as a star, but it has focused the interest of Gen-Next squarely on this talented actress.

Ready to begin work for Reema Kagti’s film with Aamir Khan, Rani meets FSJ in her sea-facing office and looks back on her long journey in films.

RANI MUKHERJEE in conversation with BHAWANA SOMAAYA

You have a habit of disappearing and appearing suddenly.

“Not that suddenly. I have always been accessible when my film is releasing. That is how it should be. There has to be a reason for talking to the media. When one is working on a film one is focused on the shooting, then begin the promotions.”

“I was offered Salim Akhtar’s Aa Gale Lag Ja which eventually went to Urmila Matondkar!”

“I was offered Salim Akhtar’s Aa Gale Lag Ja which eventually went to Urmila Matondkar!”

You’ve said somewhere that you stumbled into showbiz.

“I was 14 when I did my dad’s Bengali film. Later, I was offered Salim Akhtar’s Aa Gale Lag Ja, which eventually went to Urmila Matondkar.

I was not particularly interested in a film career. I was doing my first year in Mithibai College, when Salim (Akhtar) uncle came home with an offer and all of us thought, why not just do it?”

You must have been just a teenager then?

“That’s right. Dad suggested we wait for a year or two, but Salim uncle convinced Dad that by the time the film was complete, two years would go by, which was logical and he relented.

The film was Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. It bombed at the box-office and I went back to college. The fact is I was not seriously inclined to do films until Karan Johar offered me Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and changed my life.”

“I was not seriously inclined to do films until Karan Johar offered me Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and changed my life!”

“I was not seriously inclined to do films until Karan Johar offered me Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and changed my life!”

Looking back, what made you say ‘yes’ to such a brief role in KKHH?

“I wasn’t in a position to negotiate. My debut film had bombed and I had no other films. As a family we decided that the banner and the cast of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai would get me noticed and that is what happened.”

Choreographer Farah Khan has said that you took her breath away when you danced to ‘Koi mil gaya…’

“I’ve always enjoyed dancing. In fact I sometimes feel I enjoy dancing even more than acting. Most people don’t know that my mom and my aunt Debashri Roy performed classical dances on stage in Kolkata and as a child I tagged along with them on their tours.

So rhythm has been a part of my growing-up process. I would say it is the best thing about being an actress.”

“I feel terrible if I’m travelling during puja time because I want to be a part of the Durga celebrations at home. I’m a true Bangla and love rosogollas and fish!”

“I feel terrible if I’m travelling during puja time because I want to be a part of the Durga celebrations at home. I’m a true Bangla and love rosogollas and fish!”

What’s the worst?

“I hate getting up at odd hours to catch flights to different destinations. I hate extended shootings. There are weeks when you are continuously travelling from one city to another, hopping studios, changing costumes.

It annoys you and after a point you become oblivious to your surroundings. This happens to us on our dance tours too, but as you grow older you get better equipped to handle your dates and avoid external stress.”

Would you say you are a supportive costar?

“I’m comfortable with the senior stars, whether it’s Amitabh Bachchan or Kamini Kaushal. There is so much to learn from them. In the olden days nobody worked beyond 6 pm.

It is said that Helenji would remove her wig at the stroke of 6 pm! It was part of her contract and she arrived for shootings on the dot of time as well.

I have had a good working relationship with all my heroes and heroines too, whether it was Preity Zinta in the past or Vidya Balan in the present.”

“My mom and my aunt Debashri Roy performed classical dances on stage in Kolkata!”

“My mom and my aunt Debashri Roy performed classical dances on stage in Kolkata!”

How do you remember some of your films and characters?

“Depends on which ones you are referring to. Some characters make you feel good even if the films did not fare well at the box-office.

Some don’t stay with you even though the films were a huge success. Some like Black stay with you forever and some like Paheli are associated with you because audiences loved the way you looked in the film. So you remember different films for different reasons.

“My family was shocked by the scenes in Hey Ram!”

“My family was shocked by the scenes in Hey Ram!”

My family, for instance, was shocked by the scenes in Hey Ram but what nobody realises is that such scenes are not in the least bit erotic when shooting them. I guess that’s the magic of cinema.”

How close are you to your Bengali roots and culture?

“My brother Raja and I spoke our mother tongue from childhood, since mom insisted that we speak in Bengali at home.

Our accent is a bit faulty but I correct myself when watching Bengali films, particularly my aunt Debashri Roy’s films.

“I’d like to continue to work forever if I can because acting is a passion for me!”

“I’d like to continue to work forever if I can because acting is a passion for me!”

I visit Kolkata as often as I can and feel terrible if I’m travelling during puja time because I want to be a part of Durga celebrations at home. I feel I’m a true Bangla and love rosogollas and fish!”

There is a buzz that you will be getting married soon?

“The media has married me off 12 times in the last year. I’m scared that when I really get married, the invitees will not attend the event because they will think it is one more rumour!”

“I sometimes feel I enjoy dancing even more than acting!”

“I sometimes feel I enjoy dancing even more than acting!”

Irrespective of the date, you will continue to work after marriage?

“Absolutely. Forever if I can because acting is not just a profession, it’s a passion for me!”

Rani to play mother in Reema Kagti’s film

While Kareena Kapoor is the female lead opposite Aamir Khan in Reema Kagti’s as yet untitled thriller, according to a reliable source Rani Mukherji will play mother to a 10-year-old child in the film. Rani gets candid

Rani Mukerji is back in the limelight and in films. She owes much of this to the success of No One Killed Jessica. The light-eyed beauty, who turned 33 recently, talks to us about love, life, media, and more.

There was a time when you did not chat with the media. Suddenly, you have changed…

I am a very laidback person. I would rather spend time with my nephew and family. You will hardly notice me in many events and parties unless it’s a very close friend who is throwing the party. Suddenly, I realized that everything has changed and that actors need to be more out there. I always thought there was no need to talk to the media unless my film was releasing, but all this went wrong, and so many bad and wrong things were written about me.

And then…

So, some actors like me need to understand that everything changes as per the demand. I need to be reachable to my audience via media, as that’s the only chain for me to reach my audience. So, I thought of changing myself.

You never cleared anything about your marriage rumour?

Yes, you are right. It was a rumour. Why should I go and fight about these shitty things? I don’t understand who is your source and who informs you all these wrong things. If my house is lit up, the media says that my engagement is going on (laughs). That was quite funny. Every four months, there was a story about my marriage. But let me clear it to you that when I get married, it will be a big hit and dhamakedaar shaadi. Everyone will be invited.

You just turned 33. How does it feels to be a year older?

Nothing changes; just the number is changed, and I am loving my life and age. I have a lot more to do in my life, I need to achieve more. It feels good to be this age, and I am loving it.

So what does love mean to you?

Love is everything, be it in any form. It should be true, and you should be attached to the person. I feel beautiful being in love, because it makes you happy and there is a sweet pain too.

What is the craziest thing you have done in love?

I keep doing crazy things, and I drive the man nuts. There are so many crazy things which, obviously, I can’t discuss.

Who are your favorite actresses?

I like Preity and Aishwarya from my time. Preity Zinta and I have done so many films together, and have bonded over the years. From the current lot, I like Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor the most, and then, Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma.

Some Bollywood personalities like Aftab Shivdasani and Hansal Mehta say each day is Mother's Day. Others like Rani Mukerji and Raveena Tandon celebrate it to make their mothers feel extra special.

Raveena Tandon: It was my mum's birthday yesterday. So we celebrated her birthday and brought in Mother's Day. They don't make mothers like my mom. Everyone's mother is special but mine is extra special.

Rani Mukerji: I am gifting my mom with a big renovated house. Fathers are as specials as mothers. But because we come from the mother's womb, it is another feeling altogether. The mom-child relationship is incomparable with anything else in the world.

Dad and me are very much alike. I fight with my mom all the time. But I can't do without her. She can kill for her child. I'll understand that feeling only when I have my own child. My brother and I tell our mom to give us a break. But when she really goes away, we beg her to come back. When she goes to visit her sister we are hysterical after two days. Then it is her turn to teach us a lesson. 'You take me for granted. Now you'll realise my value', she teases us when we beg her to come back.

Posted on Tuesday, April 05, 2011 (EST)

April 05, 2011, (Sawf News) - Rani Mukerji looked a draped delight in a blue, floor length Grecian gown at the unveiling of the Forevermark Diamonds at Tote in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai on April 4.

The 32-year-old Black star paired her back baring gown with exquisite diamond jewelry from the brand, and black heels.

Her side swept hair, colored dark brown, was styled in loose waves and an off center parting. She wore smokey eye makeup that accentuated her light cat eyes, nude lip gloss, and subtle wash of color on cheeks.

The presser was hosted by Stephen Lussier, CEO, Forevermark, an offshoot of De Beers.

The highlight of the event was the showcasing of the world's largest pair of diamonds, Steinmetz Yin Yang. The D/Flawless round brilliant diamonds of 35.61 and 35.77 carats initially weighed over 100 carats as rough diamonds.

Rani had earlier displayed Forevermark diamonds when the brand collaborated with Salman Khan for his Being Human fashion show during HDIL Couture Week in October 2010; in a Umrao Jaan style makeover Rani had strutted a 65.7 carat haath phool (hand jewel) designed by Mona Mehta, and crafted by Rosy Blue.

Rani Mukerji urges people to Educate as many kids as possible

April 5th, 2011

Mumbai, April 5 – After doing various roles on big screen, Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji is set for a new role in real life – she endorses Procter & Gamble’s Shiksha programme and urges everyone to contribute to help educate as many people as possible.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) has tied up with the NGO Child Rights and You (CRY) for Shiksha programme and under this some part of the proceeds generated from the sale of a P&G product such as Tide, Ariel, Vicks, etc. will go for children’s education in the country.

“School is as important as drinking water and education is as important as the air we breathe. So, I feel that initiatives like Shiksha that support the cause of education are incredible, and I feel we should all contribute even if it’s a little bit because if we do that India will have 100 per cent literacy rate one day,” Rani told reporters here.

“It’s my dream too that every child in India is educated because the way India is growing I don’t think without education, we can see a very bright future. So if we want a bright future for our country, I think education is foremost,” she added.

Rani, who described herself as “not such a studious student in school”, also recommended that education should be made more interesting.

“It’s very important to make education interesting and enjoyable so that students don’t drop out. Also, focus should not be only on academics. Alternate interests like painting, music, etc., should also be encouraged,” she said.

Also present at the event was Sharat Verma, marketing manager, P&G India.

“Shiksha is not just an initiative, but a passion that we as an organisation strongly believe in. After touching the lives of 150,000 children, we are now helping build the future of India’s children by building 20 schools this year and aim to build another 20 in the coming year,” he said.

P&G has tied up with other NGOs to spread this campaign.

Shiksha has been successful in impacting 150,000 children thus far, in association with leading NGOs Round Table India (RTI), Child Rights and You (CRY), Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) among others.

P&G's Shiksha aims to build at least 20 more in the coming year

India Infoline News Service / 08:55 , Apr 06, 2011
This year, Bollywood megastar Rani Mukherji came on-board to extend her selfless support to Shiksha.

In India, just 54% of all children in the age group 11-14 years are enrolled in schools and 50% of those who do enroll in class I drop out by class VII. Moreover, 47% of India’s habitation does not even HAVE a primary school. We all hear alarming facts like these often and feel the urge to contribute within our means. P&G’s signature CSR Program “Shiksha” understands this national concern, and gives consumers a simple yet powerful way to participate in building India’s educational future.

Every time a consumer buys P&G products such as Tide, Ariel, Pampers, Whisper, Olay, Vicks, Gillette Oral-B, Head & Shoulders, Pantene and Duracell in the month of April, May & June, Shiksha contributes a portion of the proceeds towards children’s education. Now in its 7th year, Shiksha is back with an even stronger commitment - to take its current impact of 150,0001 children to the 200,000 mark. In 2010, Shiksha RTan building over 20 schools all across India, supported 100+ existing schools and aims to build at-least 20 more in the coming year.

This year, Bollywood megastar Rani Mukherji came on-board to extend her selfless support to Shiksha, encouraging consumers to help Shiksha lead more and more on the path to education. Rani was delighted to hear that Shiksha is also building a school in the state of West Bengal and helped build a model for a play-school that will be presented to the children at RTI Shiksha Begampur High School. At the Shiksha launch event Rani said “It’s truly commendable that with your support, Shiksha has been able to impact 150,000 children and begun building 20 schools across India. I am proud to be associated with Shiksha and felt very happy to be creating this playschool that will be built for the children at RTI Shiksha Begampur High School, West Bengal. I urge you to remember that the next time you walk into a store to shop for something basic like a shampoo, a toothbrush or a detergent - you can help educate a lesser-privileged child by making a simple brand choice”

Present at the launch, Sharat Verma, Marketing Manager, P&G India said, ‘‘Shiksha is not just an initiative, but a passion that we as an organization strongly believe in. After touching the lives of 150,000 children, we are now helping build the future of India’s children “Brick by Brick” by building 20 schools this year and an aim to build another 20 in the coming year and take Shiksha’s impact to 200,000 children. After all, “Padhega India, tabhi toh Badhega India”

Shiksha has been successful in impacting 150,000 children thus far, in association with leading NGOs - Round Table India (RTI), Child Rights and You (CRY), Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) amongst others. NGO Round Table India is spearheading the identification, establishment, completion and maintenance of RTI Shiksha School projects in the country as a joint partner bringing onboard expertise in building schools as well as contribution towards funds.

P&G brands Tide, Ariel, Pampers, Whisper, Olay, Vicks, Gillette Oral-B, Head & Shoulders, Pantene and Duracell, contribute to Shiksha in the months of April, May and June. Shiksha channelizes a part of the proceeds from these sales towards educating underprivileged children. Irrespective of sales, P&G will commit a minimum of Rs. 1 crore towards the donation funds of Shiksha every year. With a motto of ‘Padhega India, Badhega India’ - Shiksha believes that the secret to a brighter India lies in the quality education of our children.

Rani Mukherji hints at engagement?

Rani Mukherji sure knows how to keep everyone guessing. The Bengali actor acted rather mysteriously at the launch of Forevermark diamonds by De Beers held at Tote, Mahalaxmi, on Monday night.

While lauding the beauty of the stones on display, she casually remarked, “I’m very fond of diamonds.
I would love to be proposed to with the rock. I think it is incredibly romantic. In fact, my next one has to be my engagement ring.”

Rani MukherjiThis unexpected sneak-peek into her marriage plans left everyone asking for more. But the actor mischievously dodged all the questions and continued maintaining a playful demeanour.

To rest the numerous questions being darted at her about the identity of her partner, the No One Killed Jessica actor playfully pointed towards the CEO of the diamond brand and said, “He will gift me my engagement ring.” The CEO, who was caught unaware, couldn’t help but laugh the episode off.

Speculation about marriage plans between Rani and producer Aditya Chopra has been rife for many years now, but they have never chosen to comment on it. According to rumours, both of them are interested in tying the knot, but Aditya’s parents Yash and Pamela disapprove of it.

With this disclosure, it remains to be seen if in fact, Aditya will be proposing to Rani or not. It seems that the 33-year-old actor is now looking to settle down and is waiting for her leading man to slip the ring on her finger. At least that’s the idea one gets. For now it’s a wait and watch situation. Will Aditya propose?

I like all kinds of jewellery - gold, silver, precious stones, but my flavour of late is diamonds!"

About her first diamonds, Rani says, "It was a gift from my father. It's not very easy to be able to afford a diamond set very early in your career. So it was dad who gave me my first diamonds - a pendant with matching earrings. Something I'll cherish forever."

Who’s Rani Mukerji's man?

Actress Rani Mukerji has in the past said that she is pretty fed up of people asking her as to when she will be tying the knot. But it looks like the actor has finally learnt to take the interest in her personal life with a pinch of salt or maybe she has just learnt the art of hiding her irritation with clever answers.

A source says that Mukerji recently made an appearance for the launch of a diamond brand and she was armed with witty answers to throw at whoever dared to ask her about her shaadi.

Mukerji, says the source, was initially in two minds as to how to tackle shaadi-related queries. At first, she apparently thought of snubbing curious cats by giving them a cold shoulder but eventually she was in such a good mood that she brought up the topic herself.

“Rani said that she believes in the idea of marriage and that everything will happen when the time is right. She even pointed out that she doesn’t wear any ring on her ring finger. The reason she said was that she’s saving it for someone special in her life,” says an onlooker who was present at the venue. The next question obviously was when she was planning to settle down and with whom, considering that one hears about her impending marriage plans almost everyday.

The petite actress said that whoever wants to know that will have to set up a teleconference with God to know that. Is that whom we see you talking to while you’re glued on the phone, Rani?

No regrets on being a woman

It’s not surprising that Rani has consistently spoken up for women’s rights. The actress articulates the urgent need for empowering women. “I think women will progress only if the mindset towards them changes. Women are not inferior to men in any way,” she avers.

Rani has a shining example at home. She says. “When my mother shouts, everyone in the house goes silent. In Bengali families, the women are always very strong and the men stand with hands clasped before them. Even if I don’t get such a husband, I shall make him like that after marriage. After all, it is about women empowerment!” she laughs with a merry twinkle.

On the other hand, Rani learnt a lesson for life when her career took a downturn. She says, “You are able to see the reality of people around you with a magnifying glass during such time. When you are successful, you’ll have a lot of people around you, praising you and make you feel loved. But, the only people you can always trust is your family. They will always support you.”

Coming to marriage, the actress has never denied that she would like to get married some day. “Marriage is an extremely important subject for every woman. Till the time a woman becomes a mother, she is not complete. I think no woman should ever miss such an opportunity in life. In order for that to happen, marriage is a must. Even today, our society is not able to accept an unwed mother.” says Rani.

Rani revels in being born female. “When I was born, my parents wanted a girl. They brought me up like a boy. I have no regrets and would like to be born a woman every time!” she says.

I’m happy to be called a designer: Sabyasachi Mukherjee
Published: Sunday, Apr 10, 2011, 14:05 IST

A decade into his career, designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee from Kolkata has still been creating waves with his label, and his collections have been widely appreciated in the international fashion circles. Mukherjee is a firm believer in India's skilled labour and has been doing his bit to promote them for quite some time now.

Taking one step at a time Mukherjee will unveil his 10th year celebratory collection today at Delhi's fashion week. "The collection I present will be inspired by the paintings of three of my favourite painters namely Henri Matisse, Picasso and Paul Gauguin. The collection is sporty and retro fusing contemporary elements. Most of the silhouettes are western and structured, reflecting the '40s to '70s style," he says.

Ask Mukherjee if he believes in sponsored shows and he quips, "I am doing a sponsored show, but fortunately I have my creative independence here. But if you ask me I don't believe in sponsored shows as a designer, because then designers have to follow the diktats of the sponsors," he says.

Mukherjee doesn't like being categorised into a slot: "I am happy to be called a designer. I am happy to be born in India, which has skilled top class labour. Unfortunately, not many designers realise their worth and instead opt of technology-based work. What upsets me is that people fail to understand that buyers from Europe and America come here to buy embroidery work that is so Indian and yet so western in construction."

Ask him about his film and he stiffens a bit: "I've just finished the scripting but it is in its nascent stages." So will we see friends Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan in his film? "I'd love to have them. In fact, I have a few ideas that I've written with them in mind. But if their dates are booked, I wouldn't want them to cancel their prior commitments. Besides I know they are always there to support me," Mukherjee concludes.

Now Rani is dying to do an item number

With item numbers becoming a craze in Bollywood, it seems everyone wants to be part of these popular Bollywood statements. The latest to catch the item number flu is actress Rani Mukherji.

We hear that Rani, who is riding high on a renewed popularity wave post her successful film earlier this year, is dying to do an item song. Rani's wish is in keeping with the fact that Bollywood has realised that having item songs can boost a film's success manifold.

Now, we hear Rani is eagerly awaiting offers to do an item song and unfortunately for her nothing has materialised so far. According to reliable sources, "Rani is no longer playing it safe. Now, she wants to go full throttle with her film roles. From item songs to no-nonsense roles, Rani is trying to cash on the success of her last film before it runs out of steam. Rani's wish to do an item song is part of that strategy."

For all those who had written off Rani need to rest their case. The actress is not only back with bang, but is on a prowl too.

I'm not scared of challenges: Rani Mukerji

She will make commercial films, and says that she understands the nuances of filmmaking

She has always maintained that she wants to act and filmmaking was something she hadn't even thought about. Until now. For the first time in her career, Rani Mukerji admits she has been thinking about directing a film. The actress, who has constantly pushed herself with challenging roles, wants to attempt another avenue of her profession and see if she can shine there as well. Obviously, it is the Aditya Chopra effect. She won't even have to go looking for a production house.

Aditya's production house would be more than happy to produce it, but knowing her independent streak, don't be surprised if she decides to produce it herself.

Says the actress, "Directing is something that I will surely do. It really fascinates me. It is a challenge that I want to take up. I want to make commercial movies that hopefully people will like, close to the kind of films that I have done in my career. The thought of being behind the camera has been coming and going out of my head, but now I have set my mind on it. Let's see when I can get that script that pushes me to switch sides. I'm sure it will come soon."

Rani Mukerji's planning a big 'O'!
TNN | Apr 15, 2011, 12.00am IST

Yeah, after playing Queen Bee for so many years, this beauty is planning to hit the 'O' spot. Well, O for Oprah, we mean (and what were you thinking, huh?).

She's quite a talker, and add to that her doses of natural Bong sweetness – makes her quite a conversationalist. At a recent event, Rani Mukerji confessed that she wanted to start her own talk show someday, a la Oprah Winfrey, and share people's experiences. Hmmm...interesting idea,

Rani, but we'd love to know if you're planning to make a few confessions yourself. Like the inevitable question about the 'knot'. Well, the show is all about baring your heart out, confessions et al. Starting with the host, of course.

I would love to learn till I actually hang my boots:Rani Mukherjee

Rani Mukherjee may have crossed her 30s but she still holds school memories very close to heart. Surprisingly, she says she was not naughty in school.

I have become naughty at 30. But in school I was a good girl, who liked to study just before her exams, she laughs. Recently, Rani, a Maneckji Cooper student, was invited to the annual day function in her school.

I was really overwhelmed. To go back to your own school as chief guest is a matter of great pride, she gushes. Rani says that if she were a teacher, she would love to teach acting.

Acting educates me every day. Its all about experience, reacting and observation. I learn more with every character I play.

I believe there has been a growth in my performances. There is a huge difference between what I did in my first film, Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat and No One Killed Jessica. I would love to learn till I actually hang my boots, she says.
