Has Rani Mukerji got herself a stylist?
Published: Wednesday, Jan 12, 2011, 10:29 IST
By Sujata Reddy | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

Actress Rani Mukerji seems to have come a long way from her loud and flashy dressing days. Of late, onlookers insist that the petite actor is making heads turn, and for a change, it’s for the right reasons. Gone are the days when she would make appearances in thigh-high dresses and accessorise with chokers. Now Mukerji is only seen sporting elite brands, in solids with the emphasis on structure rather than on embroidery. Fashion designer Sabbah Sharma says that since the actor is petite, she shouldn’t wear flowy outfits, if she wants to continue with her spate of good dressing. “She should stick to fabrics that accentuate her curves and stick to her body. If she wants to wear jumpsuits, then it should have minimal fabric use and should stop at the ankle to give length to her body,” says Sabbah.

Designer Mandira Wirk too agrees that Mukerji is looking better than never before. Says Mandira, “I quite like the way Rani is experimenting with her look. Her new avatar is chic and trendy and I would like to see her more in soft drapes with feminine detailings or a controlled structured look which is a little futuristic. She should also experiment with nude shades, corals, lilacs and electric blues. They complement her personality.” Fashion designer and stylist Kaanch Advani sums it up as she says, “Rani has proved that she can carry off western outfits too. But she should stay away from outfits that reveal too much. She tried her hand at lace saris before and they didn’t complement her. But she shocked her fashion critics when she successfully carried off a beige jumpsuit recently.” Well, we surely hope that Mukerji continues to impress with her newly acquired dress sense.

As An Actor, I'm Not Over

Posted: Sun Jan 23 2011, 19:25 hrs
New Delhi:

Rani Mukerji on her days in Bollywood wilderness and getting back to form with No One Killed Jessica.

Meera Gaity in No One Killed Jessica is quite a badass character with her cursing, smoking and fierce ambition. How did you approach the role?
To be honest, I played her spontaneously. When you think too much about a gesture or a nuance of a character, you end up trying too hard, which comes across on the screen. When Raj (director Rajkumar Gupta) met me for the narration, he was inspired by my personality and added all that to Meera’s character. When I’m on the set, sometimes, even I don’t know what kind of a shot I’ll give. It just happens and slowly I sink into the character.

Bollywood hardly ever manages a correct representation of the media. How did you navigate the role? Did you base your character on a particular journalist?
My character in the film is meant to be the voice of the media, not one particular journalist. As part of my research, I spoke to a lot of journalists and found out that unbiased reporting is what everyone endeavours to do. It’s not about what they feel, it’s about the facts. Even the journalists who reported on the Jessica Lall case said that in their coverage, they were conscious of not taking sides. I was fascinated by this dichotomy — between the emotional and the objective side. I wanted Meera to be the voice of the media. When she says, “Justice has been denied. You can live with it, I can’t”, it’s really the voice of every true journalist.

Don’t you think the swear words were a bit too much?
The curses were put in not because Meera is a journalist. That’s just Meera’s character. She could have easily been a lawyer. In the film, other reporters don’t swear. Even when Meera uses the g*** word, it is a reaction to a viewer who finds her war reportage entertaining. Meera is a modern Indian girl who isn’t living in denial. She is unapologetic about being great at her job. Take a look around you, girls do swear.

It’s quite interesting that you get to be the voice of the media when your own relationship with the media is fraught with tension.
You know, I’ve analysed it. By and large, the media has been supportive of me; it’s just a handful of journalists who have tried to defame me. Anyway, Meera is not a Bollywood journalist. Even if she were, I would have played her well.

As for the ones who try to defame me, I think, in some way, they too have contributed to making me who I am. The only bit that upsets me is the marriage rumours. Over time, I’ve also taken them positively in the sense that they must really wish me well if they want to see me settled. The flip side is that these stories harm me professionally because they scare producers away. But I’ve learnt to live with them.

What does the success of No One Killed Jessica mean to you?
It’s a huge deal for me. Critics have said that my character emerges as the hero of the movie, which is heartening. The film’s success means that I won’t be crying alone at night anymore. It’s sad getting used to the feeling that your convictions have failed with the audience. Box-office success reassures an actor that people still want to watch you. In that sense, the success of No One Killed Jessica proves that I’m not over.

During your low phase, did the attitude of the industry change?
Yes, of course, there was a big change. It did me good because I realised that people who were approaching me were doing so for the value that I could add to a film and not because of my box-office status.

Tell me more about that phase. Did the invitations to the parties dry up? Did friends become strangers?
See, not being invited to the biggest party of the year didn’t bother me. I have never been the partying kind. That was the one good thing, since I didn’t have to think of new excuses to not attend a party. As for friends, yes, some of them did turn into strangers but then it takes all kinds to make this world. I have learnt not to be judgmental since in our industry, it’s all about the survival of the most successful.

What lessons did you learn?
I've come to the conclusion that people like to see me in powerful roles. They like me doing masti on screen, not crying.

So do you admit your choice of roles was at fault? Too many crying roles?
It's tough to answer in a or a no. When I cried, my audience cried with me. But maybe, I should have avoided too many crying roles in a row. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Baabul came at the same time.

Do you also feel that associating yourself exclusively with one banner — Yash Raj Films (YRF) — was a mistake?
I did those movies with YRF because they offered me great roles. The day I got an interesting offer from another banner like in the case of No One Killed Jessica, I signed it. I choose a movie, not the banner. Today, people say that working with YRF was a minus point for me, but if those films had clicked, the same people would have said that it was a wonderful strategy. It’s all about the timing.

You’re working with Aamir Khan in Reema Kagti’s film, after Ghulam and Mangal Pandey. What can we expect?
It’s a romantic thriller. This would have actually been my fourth film with Aamir. Ashutosh Gowariker had offered me Gauri’s role in Lagaan but I could not do it then because of scheduling conflicts. Aamir has always been very encouraging. I always learn something from him. Hopefully, this should be good.

My Fundays

Rani Mukerji
Since making her debut with Raja ki Aayegi Baraat in 1997, she has won both critical acclaim and mass appreciation. She's again made sparks fly with her gutsy role in the recently released No One Killed Jessica

I’ve always been my dad’s pet and inevitably got my way with him. He never beat me. My brother, Raja, wasn’t given permission to beat me either, however naughty I might have been. But Mummy stopped me when I tried to be too smart.

I was a good student in school, though I was never right at the top. Once when I came fifth I was downright thrilled. I was very obedient, and never got punished. But once I got thrown out of class for no fault of mine. It was actually because of Priya, my friend since kindergarten, that we got into trouble. Our teacher was copying out some marks and he told us to keep quiet. I, the obedient girl, kept silent. But Priya couldn’t spend even two minutes without saying something. Soon she started whispering. I opened my mouth to warn her, but just then, our teacher looked up and saw me. ‘‘Rani, get out,’’ he shouted. Priya felt so bad that she said, ‘‘Sir, I was talking too.’’ He told her to leave the room with me.

I felt terrible, since I wasn’t at fault, but what could I do? I was not in the habit of answering back. However, when the class got over, our teacher came out and told me he was sorry to have thrown me out. That made me happy again.

I used to be very good at throwball and dancing, and have learnt Odissi. We are just two siblings, Raja and Rani, and we fought a lot. But I always won since my brother couldn’t lay hands on me.

Now that I’ve become an actress, little children come up to me and call me, ‘‘Meri Rani!’’ I just love that. My teachers sometimes ring me up and tell me that they are proud of me and that makes me very happy.

As told to The Telegraph

It's the season of comebacks
Bollywood News Service
New Delhi, January 28, 2011

Though 2011 has just begun, it has already proven beneficial for three actors who were major crowd pullers in the early-and-mid-naughties but have seen their careers languish in the last few years.

The Deol brothers, Sunny-Bobby, and talented Rani Mukherjee are back in the race after hitting jackpot with Yamla Pagla Deewana and No One Killed Jessica, respectively. After her last dud, Dil Bole Haddipa (2009), Rani disappeared from the Bollywood radar, so much so that many had written her off. Rani had no releases in 2010. Before NOKJ’s release, Rani had confessed: “I feel bad when people write that Rani is finished, but I also feel good that it gives me an opportunity to bounce back.”

Sure enough, Rani has now resurfaced - and how! Apart from breaking the first Friday jinx, Rajkumar Gupta’s No One Killed Jessica has made the audience realise that Rani is here to stay. Moreover, the actor has again become a favourite with filmmakers and bagged Reema Kagti’s next with Aamir Khan.

After Apne (2007), the Deol brothers – Bobby and Sunny – had a string of flops. With forgettable films like Naqaab, Nanhe Jaisalmer, Chamku, Heroes, Ek – The Power Of One, Vaada Raha and the horror thriller Help, Bobby’s career had definitely slid downhill. Meanwhile, Sunny Deol too lost his once-strong connect with audience, thanks to turkeys like Heroes, Fox, Right Yaa Wrong and Khuda Kasam.

But Deols are back with a bang with Samir Karnik’s Yamla Pagla Deewana and have succeeded in charming the masses. Bobby Deol has more movies lined up in 2011 with Anees Bazmee’s comedy Thank You and Abbas-Mustan’s thriller Players. Sunny Deol too has signed a new film with T-Series alongside Kangna Ranaut.

Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji switch places
TNN, Jan 30, 2011, 05.08pm IST

Times change and people change with it. This was pretty obvious at the Filmfare Awards recently, where the stars came together.

Rani Mukerji who was always comfortable in Indian traditional wear, wore a purple western dress and seemed quite at home in it. On the other hand, the gorgeous and bubbly Preity Zinta, who always dressed in gowns and something typically western, settled to dress herself in an Indian sari - from Manish Malhotra's collection - this time round. "It took all of five minutes to wear it, she said, urging us to believe her.

On the other hand, the more demure and woman of a few words, Rani Mukerji was all over the place. While the once upon a time perky Preity Zinta seemed more business like - of the 'will-speak-when-I'm-spoken-to' types. While Rani has lost a little weight, Preity seems to have gained some. However, not all is hunky dory in the world of films for these two actresses. Rani Mukerji gives it her best shot with the random few movies coming her way, but entrepreneur Preity Zinta who doesn't seem to be getting even those random few has now stepped on the television bandwagon and is trying to make it happen.

But Preity isn't shying away from the truth. She candidly said, "I think I should campaign for the Missing-In-Action Award. I haven't been around for a while now!" Well, with a new television innings and a few odd balls at the IPL, we think Preity is managing to pull along pretty well. And as for Rani, we think her performance in'No One Killed Jessica' should get her back on those nomination lists and maybe even win her some awards. Looks like someone should be campaigning for the 'Back-In-Action' award, eh?

Rani Mukerji And Preity Zinta Exchange Get-Up And Attitude!

January 31st, 2011

Rani Mukerji And Preity ZintaJanuary 31, 2011: Bollywood actresses Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta seem to be in the mood of some change in their lives! During the recently held Filmfare Awards, Rani was spotted in a purple western dress and Preity Zinta was spotted in a typical Indian sari designed by Manish Malhotra. This goes totally against the usual image of the two actresses.

We have always seen Rani preferring sari for various award functions whereas Preity was fond of her gowns and other western attires. However, the duo seems to have exchanged their dressing style. It was not the only thing that duo exchanged as they were also seen exchanging their attitudes! Rani, who was earlier known for her privacy and less media friendly attitude, has become a bubbly girl spreading her charm all over.

But, Preity’s dimpled smile was missing somewhere and was maintaining a low profile. Speaking about her expertise with sari, Preity said that it took her only five minutes to put on it. It seems that the absence from big screen and the IPL saga has taken a toll on Preity.

On the other hand, Rani has found a new hope with the success of her latest release No One Killed Jessica. The 32-year old actress impressed everyone with her newfound charming personality beating the entrepreneur Preity Zinta.

Rani to play Babli again in sequel
Priyanka Srivastava and Samiksha Ghai | Mail Today | January 31, 2011 | Updated 11:21 IST

No One Killed Jessica has revived Rani Mukerji's career.

Recently, there was a rumour doing the rounds that Rani's fans would like to see her work in a sequel to Bunty Aur Babli. Rani is game for it. "I really liked the character of Babli and I'd love to work on a sequel. I have told (director) Shaad Ali about it," says Rani.

On queries about the actress being past her prime, Rani says: "It is the audience which makes us stars. It's for them to decide if a star's innings are over." Rani is also looking forward to more work.

"I am going through scripts. I want to do one more film this year," says the petite actress.

Best ever January, also the month of comebacks!

February 1, 2011 01:02:14 PM IST

Not only was January 2011, the best ever in terms of business of the films released, but it also marked the comeback of two top most ranking actors of their times.

We had in one of our previous columns informed you why the first month of the year 2011 will be the best ever, and most of our predictions have come true. With two clear hits, NO ONE KILLED JESSICA and YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA, and despite a just about average theatrical performance by Aamir Khan's DHOBI GHAT, followed by a decent (though a tad disappointing) opening for Madhur Bhandarkar's DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI, January has ceased to sound as dreadful as it used to earlier.

However the month has definitely proven lucky for Sunny Deol and Rani Mukerjee. The trade as well as the public had given up on these two splendid actors, who had once ruled the hearts of the audience, but they made a grand comeback because Bollywood never fails to surprise.

Despite the presence of his evergreen dad, Dharmendra, and his charming young bro, Bobby, Sunny was undoubtedly the 'jaan' (life) of YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA, his action and comic sequences had the audience in ruptures. And while taking nothing away from super actress Vidya Balan, it was Rani Mukherjee whose hard-hitting performance as a foul mouthed, straight forward and honest performer in NO ONE KILLED JESSICA that moved the audience.

Without doubt that Rani and Sunny have definitely made a grand return, and we hope that these two will continue to give many more memorable performances and hits in the times to come!

Riding high on success

A box office hit at the start of the year and an Actress of the Decade award in her kitty! 2011 has surely begun on a lucky note for Bollywood actor Rani MukHerji.

After receiving appreciation for her portrayal of a hardcore journalist in No One Killed Jessica (NOKJ), Rani has proven
her acting credentials to an industry that had almost written her off.

When asked about director Rajkumar Gupta, who confessed to being smitten by her during the film, she says: “I was loved by the entire crew of the movie.”

Currently, she is working with Kareena Kapoor and her long time friend Aamir Khan in an untitled thriller directed by Reema Kagti.
When asked about her relationship with Aamir, she says, “He is my lucky charm and it’s always a pleasure to work with him.” When quizzed about her effort to ease tension between her good friends Shah Rukh and Salman, she says, “I would not like to comment.”

At the GR8! Women Awards 2011 held at Gurgaon’s Kingdom of Dreams, where she was awarded the Actress of the Decade award, she spoke about Mother Teresa as her role model. “Mother Teresa has been a guiding force, an image of a complete woman in my life.”

Thanking her loyal audiences at the ceremony, she remarked “I have had a great experience in the past decade and have a loyal audience who have given me so much love that I feel indebted. Likewise I’m also aware of my social responsibility as a youth icon.”
On being asked about marriage, she says, “For me marriage is a sacred institution, when I do get married it would be a spontaneous decision. I want the whole deal -husband, kids and a family. Whenever that happens I will let my fans know.”

Rani talks about...
Success of NOKJ
I feel honoured with the way my role in the film was appreciated. I felt it was a powerful role.

Working with Aamir
Aamir is my lucky charm. I have done some of my best work with him. It’s nice to work with pals.

On Salman & SRK
This is not the place for such discussions and I do not wish to comment on Salman and Shah Rukh’s patch-up.

Not a tweeter
I can’t take Twitter casually as I can’t tweet anything or everything. I feel it is a social responsibility.

Rani and Bhansali are friends again
By: Tushar Joshi Date: 2011-02-16 Place: Mumbai

Friends-turned-enemies Rani Mukerji and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are back on talking terms

Frenemies (friends-turned-enemies) Rani Mukerji and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are back on talking terms.

An insider reveals that it was the Guzaarish director who took the effort of patching up with his one-time favourite heroine.

They worked together in Black and Saawariya (2007) but then due to a misunderstanding (see box), kept their distance from each other for the last three years.

When Bhansali recently watched No One Killed Jessica, he was impressed by Rani's performance and sent her a congratulatory message.

That was all it took to break the ice between the two hurting friends. She texted him back. And all is well between them.

Adds an insider, "Rani and Bhansali were good friends even before they started working together. In fact, their professional equation during Black only strengthened their bond.

She agreed to do a small role for his film Saawariya, even though she knew it wouldn't help her career. It was all good even after the film released and tanked at the box-office."

Vaibhavi Merchant, who is close to the actress as well as the director, tried to patch them up but they were both not ready.

They didn't even want to see each other and even ensured that they never attended the same public events. But now, things are back to normal.

A common friend confirms, "Sanjay sent her a warm text after seeing her film. She was touched and instead of replying with a text, called him, and they talked for hours and cleared their differences."

Buzz is that with the personal relationship being mended, there is now a possibility of them renewing their professional equation.

What went wrong

Their dosti turned sour over Yashraj film Dil Bole Hadippa. SLB claimed it was not a coincidence that his sister Bela's film (which was offered to Rani) was titled Haddipa. He felt betrayed that she'd stolen their title, and sent Rani an angry text message. The actress has her own reasons for loyalty for the YRF film, and replied in the same tone. After that they never spoke to each other.

Rani to set up funds for treatment of stroke-affected patients

Mumbai, Feb 24 (PTI) Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee will set up a fund to facilitate the treatment of stroke affected patients.

She will set up the Stroke Treatment Fund along with the Indian Stroke Association (ISA), which will treat 25 eligible stroke patients who cannot afford treatment.

Rani says she was driven to support the cause after losing two of her family members due to strokes.

"Two of my close family members recently died due to strokes and I thought of getting associated with the cause. In our country stroke is the third largest killer. It is a privilege to support ISA to create awareness, diagnosis and appropriate management of the condition," Rani said.

According to the World Stroke Organisation, every six seconds someone dies of a stroke and one in every six individuals can have a stroke during their lifetime. In India, every year 14 lakh people develop an acute ischemic stroke.

"Over 3,800 patients suffer acute ischemic stroke daily across India. A study says that only 6.2 per cent of patients could identify all symptoms of stroke. Of those 3,800 patients only 380 or 10 per cent reach on time (within three to four- and-half hours)," ISA president Dr Shirish Hastak said.

ISA has also begun the process of identifying the ''Acute Stroke Treatment Centres'' a few months back.

"The need for this initiative was felt after it was observed that many patients who have suffered stroke landed up to nearest hospitals, found that they were not equipped with right doctors, technology or skill-sets to treat stroke. In the bargain, patients were losing out on time," he said.

The centres will be endorsed by ISA after following a stringent process and the endorsement has been awarded only to hospitals equipped with the basic levels of skill-sets and technologies required to treat stroke, he added.

Rani Mukerji Is On A Roll
by
avinash k. saurav

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji is on a roll. She has just signed a film opposite Malyalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran who would be debuting in Bollywood with this movie.

This offbeat movie would be directed by Sachin Kundalkar and produced by none other than Anurag Kashyap who had earlier directed movies like DEV.D, BLACK FRIDAY and NO SMOKING. It would be second film produced by Anurag after hugely successful UDAAN. Anurag is busy right now shooting for GANGS OF WASSEYPUR.

Rani, whose ‘almost over’ career was given a new lease of life by NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, has once again arrived. She can now be seen at every celebs gathering sporting an entirely new outfit. Critics, who had written her off, are surely stunned. Truly said, destiny has its own plans.

This movie would also see the debut of South superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran. Malayalam star must be thrilled to work besides Rani Mukerji.

The Times and Life of the Queen of Hearts – Rani Mukherjee
Posted by Mahe Talat on February 27, 2011 in Hot Now! | 0 Comment

Have you seen the movie called ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’? If not, don’t bother … it’s a disaster. But again, on second thoughts, I’d suggest go ahead and see as much of it as you can tolerate, the next time they are aired on the television. When you see the short, fat-ish, dark, firebrand protagonist, you can’t help marveling at how she’s now metamorphosed into the damsel who now rules the hearts of millions of Bollywood fans the world over. She may not look her best in her earliest movies, but you can’t mistake the twinkle in her eyes every time she smiles and the earnestness of her act which makes these two B-grade movies worth a watch.

Rani Mukherjee - The Powerhouse of Talent

Had there not been a ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, we might have discovered Rani a lot later, but the sheer talent which was so obviously oozing out of her even in her early movies, was something the world couldn’t have ignored for long. Rani Mukherjee got her first big break in Karan Johar’s K2H2 after virtually every other “big” heroine had rejected the role of Tina. Karan saw that rare spark in Rani’s work, and after being left with no other option, he signed her on. Rest as they say, is history. I am sure nobody regretted that, except, of course the spate of actresses who’d rejected that role for lack of “meatiness”.

Rani Mukherjee and Konkana Sen Gupta in 'Laga Chunari Me Daag'

Rani Mukherjee has a long portfolio of movies and her most memorable roles include the early gems like ‘Ghulam’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Saathiya’, ‘Chalte Chalte’, ‘Yuva’, ‘Bunty aur Babli’ and ‘Hum Tum’ and the more recent ‘Khabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ and ‘No One Killed Jessica’. Her most acclaimed work is undoubtedly the role of the deaf-dumb-mute girl, Michelle McNally in ‘Black’. Equally long is the list of forgettable movies. Movies like ‘Chalo Ishq Ladayein’, ‘Hello Brother’, ‘Bicchoo’ and ‘Kahin Pyar Na Ho Jaaye’ did nothing for her, except probably show her what did not work for her.

Despite her impressive list of movies, recent times have seen Rani receiving lots of flak for her bad choice of roles (‘Dil Bole Hadippa’, ‘Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic’), disastrous wardrobe (‘Ta Ra Rum Pum’) and well intentioned yet failed ventures (‘Mangal Pandey’, ‘Paheli’ and ‘Laga Chunari Me Daag’). Interestingly, almost all of her major flops in the recent times are from the Yash Raj Banner, the company with which she shares a very “special bond” for several reasons.

Rani Mukherjee in No One Killed Jessica

After more than a decade in Bollywood and a very successful run at the BO, a dry spell began. Rani failed miserably and consistently at reproducing her old magic on screen. Critics wrote her off and fans awaited one hit to start cheering again. Despite of what the detractors said, the fighter that she is, Rani re-emerged with ‘No One Killed Jessica’ and proved once again that she can still carry off movies solely with her name. This Bong beauty has managed to do a whole spectrum of movies ranging from the bubbly Vimmi of ‘Babli aur Bunty’ to the dissatisfied woman of Maya in KANK.

Rani Mukherjee - Not so well styled in her earlier years

K2K2 worked wonders for Rani and gave her what she actually needed at that point of time – a big hit. However, her metamorphosis was incomplete. Her emergence from the awkward, powder-coated, dark-skinned and awkwardly-dressed girl in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai into the beautiful girl-next-door in Chalte Chalte marked the beginning of what was going to be a steady upward rise in her styling and looks. Her designers and she herself must have discovered that she looks great with kajal (no, not Kajol .. though she looks great with her too!) and subsequently she carried that kohl-lined and long skirts/saree look in several movies like Chalte Chalte, KANK and Veer Zara. Added to that, is the fact that she lost a lot of weight since her ‘Ghulam’ days which made her look so much less chubby and has made her expressiveness get more acute. Of course, she doesn’t have a figure to die for, and her small frame doesn’t help either, still whenever she’s had to wear short dresses she’s managed to look ravishing. Not only did she carry off with aplomb the short dresses of ‘Bunty and Babli’ but also sparked off the “Bunty Babli collared kurta” trends in female wear. Her long hairs (except for the hair disaster that Ta Ra Rum Pum was) have always been her highlight and they do something to accentuate the strange sadness in her eyes.

Undoubtedly, Rani’s biggest style quotient has always been her talent which made her rise above and which goes far beyond the physicality of the character. She was the soul as well as the body of Michelle McNally in Black…you just can’t imagine anybody else there. Her oh-so-expressive eyes expressed more than all the dialogues could have combined.

Rani defied convention, gave a new meaning to the words “girl next door” and redefined what kinds of roles are written for the Indian heroine. Even in her 30s, this heroine-of-substance is “hot property” box-office wise and has several great projects waiting at her doorostep.

He was an intelligent man (okay, maybe a woman) who observed “all the best things in life come in small packets”. Rani Mukherjee is surely a small packet – but a lethally powerful one.

Not ready to retire

Those who’d written her off as a star now admit she’s a long way from hanging up her boots.

She had a long innings, but in the past two years she had an even longer string of flops, most of them from the YRF production house. (Tara Rum Pum, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and so on.) The Yashraj lucky mascot turned turtle. Other younger actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra zoomed past her. Undeterred, this hazel-eyed actress with the wide, brilliant smile and penchant for challenging roles (Black) simply waited gracefully for the winner to come along.

And it did. The gritty social drama No One Killed Jessica revived audience interest and along with it, Rani’s career. It provided what she wanted and needed — good reviews and a respected position in the glam world of Bollywood. Something else that you can’t help noticing is — the actress is looking really hot these days, a fact she attributes to “eating good food and doing regular yoga”.

With the excitement of the World Cup prevalent everywhere, it must be mentioned that Rani loves cricket. Her fans may not have accepted her as a cricket-playing tomboy in Dil Bole Hadippa! (another YRF disaster), but that film has left in Rani a lingering love for cricket, and women’s cricket in particular. The actress has also publicly voiced her support for the Indian cricket women’s team and has her favourites too. She says, “Actually, whenever anyone invites me for events centred around female cricketers, I feel extremely proud and honoured to be a part of them. I am proud of all the women cricketers of our country and all the sportswomen who represent our country.”

She goes on to name her favourite female cricketers. “Anjum and Jhulan — I think they are extremely talented. I’ve seen their matches, I’ve watched them play. It makes me feel great that they are doing so well for a team which represents our country around the world. They play as well as Dhoni and Sachin! I hope the day comes soon when these girls will be seen endorsing products just like the male cricketers do.”

Rani even says that if she had to lead a Bollywood team, she would make it an all-women one to ensure her team’s victory.

Rumours still whisper that Rani is past her prime. Rani says that’s for the audience to decide. “Actually, it is the audience that is responsible for making us stars and it is for them to decide when a star’s innings is over. My fans are my top priority and I want them to decide,” she says. And she wants them to take their time while doing so. In addition to the Aamir Khan film she’s doing with Reema Kagti, she wants to do one more film this year. “I want to do movies I get excited about,” she says flashing that famous smile.

Rani most gifted actor around
Prashant Singh, Hindustan Times
February 27, 2011

Clearly, Rani Mukherjee is becoming offbeat cinema’s favourite girl. Now, Dev D director Anurag Kashyap is planning to rope in the No One Killed Jessica (NOKJ) actor for a film opposite south Indian star Prithviraj Sukumaran. Kashyap recently signed Prithviraj, who is waiting for his much-awaited Malayalam flick Urumi to hit screens.

Talent scouting
“I plan to approach Rani for the role once I’m back in Mumbai,” says Kashyap, who has been shooting Gangs of Wasseypur in Benaras for the past few months. “I was blown away by her performance in NOKJ.”

Sources inform that Anurag was impressed with Rani’s performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black. “Anurag has always felt that Rani is one of the most gifted actors around. But he didn’t have an appropriate role for her. Now, he feels Rani is perfect for his next,” says a source.

Not long ago, Rani made headlines for her powerful outing in Raj Kumar Gupta’s NOKJ. Sources say he plans to cast Rani in his dark comedy thriller, Ghanchakkar.

“Right now, I’m wrapping up the last draft of my script. Once I am through, I will think about casting,” says Gupta. The film will hit the floors by June. And unlike NOKJ, Ghanchakkar requires only one female protagonist.

Rani, on her part, has already clarified that she is looking for challenging roles. “I want to come out with two-three films every year, but I’ve not been really lucky in getting the roles that I really want,” she said around the release of NOKJ.

Meanwhile, the buzz in south film circles suggests that Kashyap’s film could be a remake of M Sasikumar’s Tamil hit Subramaniapuram since he’s “very impressed” with the film. In fact, Kashyap was recently in Chennai for the audio launch of Sasikumar’s second Tamil film, Easan.

Rani, Genelia to go desi?
TNN, Mar 1, 2011, 12.00am IST

Hollywood movies with a B-town tadka are usually exciting for the janta. Buzz is that the makers of Rio have roped in established Bollywood names to lend their voices for the Hindi version.

Some of the confirmed talent includes comedy kings Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak. The foreign studio is also in talks with Rani Mukerji and Genelia D'Souza to add spice to this venture.

Earlier Shah Rukh Khan had lent his voice for The Incredibles in 2004 and Amitabh Bachchan had dubbed for the award-winning documentary The March of the Penguins.

Aamir, Rani caught inside a bungalow!
Afsana Ahmed, TNN | Mar 7, 2011, 12.00am IST

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji, who last shared screen space with Aamir Khan in `Ghulam' and `Mangal Pandey', have been secretly shooting for Reema Kagti's untitled new film inside an old Parsi building in the Five Garden area since a week.

Kagti's film unit led by Aamir and Rani come alive to capture the old world charm of the bungalow when the residents go to sleep. Being a suspense drama were Aamir plays a cop, this dark and old bungalow provides the best backdrop to the suspense drama and is aptly used to enhance the impact of the story. The unit is tightlipped and guarded when approached to enquire about the ongoing shoot. "No one's allowed inside the set, other than Aamir and Rani, the director, and the technicians," informs a unit member.

But Rani, excited at the prospect of working with Aamir after a long time didn't mind. She gushed, "For me it's wonderful to work with Aamir, especially after so long! `Mangal Pandey' wasn't based on us. But this one is more about us". She further adds, "Over the years Aamir and my chemistry have only got better. If you don't believe wait for this movie".

Ask her about the film and she just smiles.

Even though there are a number of vanity vans parked outside the bungalow, the reticent residents of the area remained locked inside their own houses, mostly minding their own business. Even the usual cacophony of the film unit seemed to be subdued, keeping in mind the serenity of the Five Garden area. "We know there is a shooting going but we didn't bother to be inquisitive. It doesn't matter who is shooting as long as it's not disturbing,' says Percy Dastoor, a nearby resident.

However, his wife Ketu, a huge Aamir fan is just waiting to catch a glimpse of the star if he happens to stroll out. "My son and I casually pass by the place few times a day just in case Aamir decides to step out for a walk in the five gardens".

For all you know, Aamir with his new look must have walked down the stretch several times, and Ketu and her son may have dismissed the unassuming guy with a stubble, short hair and ear rings walking by next to them as just another passerby!

Trust Aamir, to fool you again, the way he did the public in Bhindi bazaar while shooting for Kiran Rao's `Dhobi Ghat' where he would sneak in and out of one of the old dilapidated building in the area just wearing a Burqa.
