Rani lends hand to actress aunt to save stray animals 13 August 2010 20:58:43 by IANS ( Leave a comment ) Kolkata, Aug 13 (IANS) Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee Friday lent a helping hand to her actress aunt Debasree Roy to save stray dogs in the city. The Bollywood beauty was in town for the official launch of the website of a non-profit organisation run by Debasree. “My aunt (Debasree Roy) used to get ridiculed for loving dogs. I do support her cause,” Rani said. “You all should support her in her endeavour,” Rani told mediapersons after the launch at a city five-star hotel. Debasree Roy Foundation is primarily dedicated to promoting the cause of birds and animals suffering from lack of care and needless suffering. |

telegraphindia In another part of town, the spotlight was on Rani Mukerji, who launched the website of a non-profit organisation for stray animals founded by “mashi” Debasree Roy. The woman in black said: “Whenever she is in Mumbai, mashi spends more time with my dogs Simba and Tintin than with me.” On Saturday evening, Rani will light up the front row — along with Vidya Balan and other celebrities — for Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s Ode to Tradition show at Taj Bengal, in association with t2. No one killed Rani Mukherjee Click here to add this article to My Clips By Aastha Atray Banan (Tehelka), August 16, 2010 - 11:38 IST Rani Mukherjee Have you heard the rumours that Rani Mukherjee has turned into a recluse, that she sees no one anymore? That she is the new Rekha? Aastha Atray Banan set out to meet her on a rainy night and came away startled. Mumbai is full of bored jibes about Rani Mukherjee. She is over. She smells of failure. She is too short, too old to work in slick, new Bollywood. She is married to Aditya Chopra. She is just living with him like she did with Govinda. The senior Chopras hate her and she has to clear out whenever they are around. They don't care about her. Alongside snippets about her role in the forthcoming Rajkumar Gupta film, No One Killed Jessica, fly fantastical rumours that she has turned into a Rekha-like figure. Could it be that the girl with the polarising tenor (love it, hate it, deal with it), the caper-loving Babli, the girl who played any number of overwrought, teary good girls has turned into a Garboesque recluse who 'vants' to be alone? Rani is certainly not the kind of actress you trip over at Gloria Jeans in Bandra and chat up. A couple of weeks of phone calls are the investment required for an appointment. On the day, there is a tremendous downpour and Rani is late and you wonder. Has her poor run with men sunk her in self-pity? Has Rani succumbed to depression because of failure? Waiting outside in a Mumbai storm can foster any dark, Gothic ideas you might be nurturing. Reality turns out to be rather different. In her opulently done Juhu pad, with huge mirrors and vintage rugs, the big, wide trademark smile is in place but Rani Mukherjee is an unnerving presence. The warm hazel eyes are steely enough to make you squirm a little in your seat. The cruel tabloids may be dying to feature her in the 'where are they now' section but Rani's aura seems to have magnified several fold. Could it be that she has grown? At 32, she looks better than she ever has. Yoga has made her slender. Dressed in a short skirt and minimal makeup, she retains a regal air. Lauren Bacall once said, "I am not a has-been. I am a will-be." Rani would approve of Bacall's style. It is unlikely she has read the quote though. She doesn't read, she says. Unlike several young ladies who manufacture reputations as frenetic readers and think that Jane Austen was a Victorian and thinks Omair Ahmed is a medieval poet, Rani says flatly that she does not read. 'I don't read much - I have an allergy to the smell of books. Really!' Rani Mukherjee Rani makes these revelations but this is no invitation to get closer. You are always painfully aware of the Lakshman Rekha around her, one she will never cross and you better not even try to. She has no desire to be thought of as Everywoman. As she makes clear when you gird your loins and ask her about the rumours that she has turned into a hermit. She launches into a surprising and convincing discourse on the nature of fame and how it has changed in the 15 years that she has been in Bollywood. "I blame it on Twitter. Everyone has become so accessible. Today, stars function and manage themselves very differently. They chart down everything they do daily. They give stories about themselves to the press and even about other stars! There are stories about stars buying a new phone, stars fainting... when did this all become news?" she says part resigned, part disgusted. "When I started, things were done differently and film journalism was not about churning out tabloid titbits. To me, being exclusive and being mysterious is what makes a star. I guess that's why I haven't changed at all." She rarely calls herself a heroine, an actress or even the now-popular actor - only star. UP, DOWN, ROUND ABOUT Even committed Rani haters would find it hard to deny her star quotient. She arrived with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, but got noticed opposite Aamir Khan in Ghulam (1998). Her breakthrough moment came when she bagged Kuch Kuch Hota Hai opposite her now close friend Shah Rukh Khan, directed by another close friend Karan Johar. (She once described Shah Rukh as the best thing that ever happened to heroines.) With Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black and Mani Ratnam's Yuva, Rani was once at the top of the Bollywood hill. But fame has been fickle. Despite her talent and the much sought-after girl-next-door vibe, things started going downhill soon after. Heckled at by the press and critics, her alleged love affairs with the much-married Govinda and then the much-married Aditya Chopra, added fuel to the fire. Rani remained quiet through it all. And hence began a different rumour mill, which asked why (like Chopra whom only the shadow knows) Rani was never seen in public? Sipping hot water out of a mug which has the phrase 'drama queen' in big, black letters, Rani looks stoic when asked why she has not cleared the air. "I possibly couldn't have given a clarification every week. It's not in my nature to call up a journalist and say, 'why did you say this about me'. They questioned my character and that really bothered me. I am sure directors got turned off and may have not offered me movies. When I get married, I will tell everyone," she says. So she is not a recluse but who are her friends in the industry? The girl next door who has acted in some of the soppiest, why-can't-we-all-get-along movies of the decade, answers, "Friendship is a complex word. I can only tell you who my real friends are when I am old and my children have left me. The people who will spend time with me then will be my true friends." As for now, there is her family whom she shares this house with. Rani Mukherjee Filmmakers who have worked with her, like Kunal Kohli, vouch that Rani has always been reticent and seriously invested in her family. Her Lakshman Rekha is not a new phenomenon but it just suits the new 'loser' narrative to make it seem so. At some point in the conversation, she says, "When you are on the top, people want to bring you down. And they will say anything to do so. But I believe in karma, and it will all come back to them." This is the same cosmic and vengeful balancing of scales that Rani's detractors have also been wishing for her. Well-known film journalist Khalid Mohamed says, "She became too uppity after she got famous and that led to her downfall. I know a co-star of hers who told me that Rani started telling him 'how to act'. But see, she came tumbling down. You should not let fame get to your head." Others are more compassionate and a little more logical. Rauf Ahmed, the first journalist whom Rani gave her first interview to, speaks of her fondly and adds, "The media is cruel. Even if you mess up once, they take you down badly. And then the whole Aditya Chopra rumour hurt her. And she is so talented, that's what makes this so sad." But "sadness" is not an emotion Rani subscribes to. Instead, you see a small, slightly injured but visibly annoyed human being, who is not going to give her detractors the satisfaction of seeing her retreat without a fight. "I don't need to sign many movies just to prove I exist, even though this may be the worst time in my career. I don't need to go to all social events - I go if I am really needed; if someone just sends me a message on my phone, why will I go? I have done my time doing that. But there's no limit to what I can do." AND STRAIGHT AHEAD In Rajkumar Gupta's No One Killed Jessica, a film inspired by the Jessica Lal case, Rani plays an investigative television journalist. Would she do a meaty role in a movie even if it wasn't the lead? In an industry where actors prattle off practised, meaningless answers about meaningful roles, Rani makes it clear that she is not interested in crumbs. She says definitively, as if she has it all planned, "No way. I will always be the star in a movie I am in. I'd love to do a movie with an ensemble cast, but a star always is the star. Whatever role I would do would become the lead, right?" And that's another reason why it's unnerving to sit across Rani. It's because the coy, politically correct Rani we got so used to hearing about, has metamorphosed into a grownup. The girl who has made a career of being adorable, is no longer interested in pleasing people. Today, even though she has just one release lined up, she is unfazed. But now that Rani has stopped playing cute, can she make a career of it? |

Rani Mukherjee is an animal activist Published: Friday, Aug 20, 2010, 11:12 IST Actress Rani Mukerji is lending a hand to her aunt, National award winning actor Debasree Roy to garner support for abandoned animals, particularly stray dogs. Rani, who’s always been a pet lover, has decided to turn an animal activist for her aunt. The actress, sources say, has also made a sizeable donation towards building an animal shelter for stray dogs in Kolkata, where the NGO (for stray animals) run by her aunt is based. The actress has promised to be more active about the cause of stray dogs, and also help her aunt to set up a branch of her NGO in Mumbai as well. Rani says that she is particularly pained when she’s ridiculed for tending to dogs on the road. “My aunt (Debasree Roy) used to get ridiculed for loving dogs. I do support her cause,” says Rani. It was Debasree Roy who had propelled the actor towards a film career, and goaded her to sign a Bengali film with a local hero. The film proved to be her vehicle to Bollywood, where she landed her first Hindi film, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997) five years later. “You all should support her in her endeavour,” advocates Rani. It is said that the actress has taken a personal interest in her aunt’s cause, and supervised the website that was recently inaugurated. “Rani has never really taken up a cause before. But as a child she used to often get pulled up by her mom for her habit of feeding stray dogs. She still does that even now. In the days to come, you’ll see Rani taking up the cause in a bigger way, and may even start an NGO in Mumbai as promised to her aunt.Right now, she’s just happy to be able to do her bit in drawing attention to the cause (of abandoned animals),” says a source close to the actor. |

Give mystique a Miss ! A weekly magazine recently paid a visit to Rani Mukherjee to find out if she was indeed morphing into Rekha, as rumours seemed to indicate. In Bollywood, recluse is code for an out-of-work actor with weight issues. Mukherjee, who apparently looked like a million bucks, brushed away her recent absence from the movies and blamed the stories about her alleged reclusiveness on the current craze for Twitter. “Everyone has become so accessible,” Mukherjee complained about the social networking service. “To me, being exclusive and being mysterious is what makes a star.” Source: http://www.livemint.com/2010/09/03203527/G...a-miss.html?h=B |

Who will train Rani? PRITHWISH GANGULY, TNN, Sep 7, 2010, 12.00am IST Remember we reported in BT on July 12, that Rani Mukerji was slowly turning into a recluse, that she had cut off all ties with her regular Bollywood contacts and was rarely stepping outside her Juhu bungalow? And this we had said when the actress had just made a rare appearance at designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee's new store in Mumbai and gone on the sets of Karan Johar's TV show. Well, there's more to add on Rani's reclusive ways. The actress, whose next film will be Rajendra Gupta's No One killed Jessica with Vidya Balan, has converted a portion of her residence into a personal gym because she doesn't want to go out and exercise in public. Rani, a source said, wants to single-mindedly train and maintain the curvaceous and fab body she acquired for Dil Bole Hadippa! last year. And she wants to work out with a personal trainer for three hours every day in this home gym that has all modern equipment. But, again, there is a hitch. A-list celeb trainers seldom take time out exclusively for one client. There are a handful of them and all of Bollywood demands their services. Rani likes to train in the mornings like many other stars, so she's finding it difficult to get a trainer who will give up all his/her clients and only work on her. The alternative, of course, is to hit the gym... but that the actress wants to avoid. For some reason, Rani does not want to be seen in public and is particular about people not having direct access to her. |

Rani loves Punjabis Garima Sharma, TNN, Sep 8, 2010, 12.00am IST By her own admission, she loves her macher jhol bhaat as much as she relishes her kaali daal. And, the fact that she loves Punjabis, likes Punjabi food and behaves like a Punjabi, says Rani Mukerji, is enough indication of what her "future is going to be like". Considering that rumours have been flying thick for the past couple of years about her alleged relationship with Aditya Chopra, the actress's preference for all things Punjabi is not as surprising. But, the public admission of her love for 'Punjabiness' is slightly so. In town for an event some time ago, Rani was speaking about her role as a sardarji in " Dil Bole Hadippa", when the discussion turned towards Punjabis. And, there was no stopping Rani when quizzed about her opinion on Punjabis. She said, "My best friend is Punjabi and my sister-in-law is also Punjabi. Also, I have grown up with so many Punjabis around me that I guess the influence is visible in me now. I behave like a Punjabi; like Punjabi food and my mannerisms are also like them." In fact, Rani jokingly said, I believe that I was exchanged as a Punjabi baby when I was born. "It's only when my mother saw the colour of my eyes that I was returned to my original Bengali family. This is a long standing joke in my family. Everyone says I've been mistaken as a Punjabi since my birth." Even in her movie " Bunty Aur Babli", Rani had played the role of Vimmy Saluja, an aspiring Miss India contestant from a Punjabi family. Talking about it, she said, "I have essayed so many Punjabi roles. I simply love Punjabis. With so much Punjabis in my life present, you can imagine my future!" But of course, Rani. If the hint is what we believe it is, then we can, for sure. |

Shabana loves Rani TNN, Sep 13, 2010, 12.00am IST Rani Mukerji brought Lord Ganesha home this year. Besides Rani's regular gang like Karan Johar, Shabana Azmi and her writer-politician husband Javed Akhtar also visited the light-eyed actress' bungalow to pay homage to the Elephant God. In fact, Shabana thinks that Rani is one of the finest actresses of the younger generation and she feels that Rani should be doing a lot more films than she is currently. Actually, it would be great to see these two firebrand actors team up together. Perhaps Javed saab can come up with the right script for them. |

Rani's shooting in Leh Garima Sharma, TNN, Sep 18, 2010, 12.00am IST Rani is in Leh this weekend to shoot for the last sequence of " No One Killed Jessica". A source from the unit told TOI, "The shooting began on Thursday in the army headquarters. This is the Kargil sequence of the film where Rani's character is covering the war. Even though Rani's left for Leh, the first cut of the film is ready and the team's excited about how well it's turned out. Though, the last two sequences, which are being shot now, are quite critical." After the Leh sequence, the team will be headed to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu to shoot there. Apparently, there's a scene in the movie where Manu Sharma's family heads to the shrine to pray for their son's acquittal. Our source adds, "Manu's family went the whole hog to ensure that he doesn't get convicted. This is one of those scenes where his parents visit the shrine just before the hearing of the case." But, the delay in the shooting of these two sequences has also led to delay in the movie's release. The movie will now be released next year on January 7. When we contacted UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur, he confirmed the news, adding, "We wanted a clean window for "No One..." and January 7 seems like an appropriate date. We've finalised that we won't release the movie this year, as we also have " Tees Maar Khan" in December. The change in the date and January 7 seems good." |

From Neetu singh 's (ranbir's mother) interview : The average career-span of an actress has reduced from your time. Do current actresses have it in them to sustain longish runs like Hema, Rakhee, Rekha and Zeenat? Well, Rani has been around for long. Ditto for Kajol. So, I don’t think that’s a problem. Among the newer lot, I think Priyanka Chopra is doing very well for herself and she is going to be around for a very long time. |

Rani shifts loyalties? 20 Sep, 2010 06:48 pm ISTlRenuka Vyavahare Rani Mukherjee used to be Manish’s muse long time back until Sabyasachi Mukherjee happened to her. Sabya had even once remarked that Rani’s designer doesn’t know how to dress her up, given her tiny frame. After being a showstopper for Sabya at the past few fashion weeks, Rani will be surprisingly seen gracing the coveted front row seat at Manish Malhotra’s show on day 4 of the LFW. Our source present backstage confirmed the news stating, “Rani will be present for Manish’s show though she won’t be walking the ramp.” Are we shifting loyalties Rani? |

Preity, Rani, Priyanka cheer for Manish Malhotra at LFW It was the evening of the ‘bold and the beautiful’ on Day 4 of Lakme Fashion Week. Bold colours and silhouettes dominated the ramp while beautiful women dotted the front row at Manish Malhotra’s show. Tinseltown had come out to cheer for one of Bollywood’s favourite designers. Manish, who in the past has had several leading Bollywood celebrities walking the ramp for him, this time around was happy to have them watch his show from the front row. The leading ladies of B’Town poured in and frenzy ensued. Rani Mukherji and Preity Zinta walked in arm-in-arm, gladly posing for the shutterbugs. While Preity kept it flirty and feminine in a pink tiered dress, Rani flaunted her toned avatar in a classic LBD. Sonakshi Sinha, who was the showstopper in designer Narendra Kumar’s show earlier in the evening occupied the front row too, with mom Poonam. Rani-Preity the new Siamese twins in town! 21 Sep, 2010 11:43 am ISTlRenuka Vyavahare/INDIATIMES MOVIES Manish Malhotra’s show last night was a complete star studded affair as expected. The front row was flooded with Bollywood’s well known faces to the extent that Ameesha Patel had to literally squeeze in herself amongst Sangita Bijlani, Sameera Reddy, Sophie Chowdhury, Urmila Matondkar, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka Chopra, Sonakshi Sinha and mum Poonam Sinha! Phew.... The highlight of the evening barring the gorgeous festive Indian evening wear presented by Manish was the camaraderie that Preity and Rani shared! Ironically, Preity herself had once said in her interviews, “The media is responsible for making Rani and I look like Siamese twins after we did the song Piya Piya which is not true. We are not enemies but nor are we close buddies!” Rubbishing her own claims, Preity walked hand in hand with Rani, posed for the media together and then sat together only to giggle and chit chatter throughout the show with her other ‘siamese twin’. Giving company to two chatter boxes was Priyanka Chopra who just won’t stop chatting with her fellow stars! The trio only focussed on the ramp when Manish took to it. While Rani and Priyanka wore black short dresses, Preity chose pink. Another eye grabbing scene of the evening was Aarti Surendranath using crutches to walk. After Diana Hayden, it was Aarti who seemed to have hurt the foot yet the one to have made it at the LFW’2010. The show beautifully opened with a full circle blue tiered lehenga with a striking red velvet border and choli that a model sported. One wondered why Manish chose well known model Candice Pinto over any Bollywood stars as showstopper but the designer just kept his promise he made last season that he won’t have Bollywood stars as showstoppers any more as the focus would be fashion. |

B'wood beauties cheer for Manish Malhotra Indo-Asian News Service Mumbai, September 21, 2010 Celebrity designer Manish Malhotra's shows are known for their heavy dose of Bollywood presence and it was not surprising that A-list actresses like Priyanka Chopra, Rani Mukjerji and Priety Zinta dazzled in the guest gallery at his offering at the Lakme Fashion Week. The show, which was sponsored by Aircel to promote its Save The Tiger Initiative, was attended by most of Malhotra's close friends and Bollywood actress including Urmila Matondkar, Sonakshi Sinha, Sameera Reddy and Sangeeta Bijlani. The girl gang occupied front row and visibly enjoyed the show as they were seen giggling, clapping and cheering while the models sashayed down the ramp showcasing Malhotra's designs, which were all contemporary evening wear. Manish Malhotra"For me, my clothes are my life and I wake up to it. 'Save the Tiger' is also a great cause to support and I'm happy that I collaborated with them," Malhotra told reporters after the show. Commenting on the Bollywood brigade that came to support him, the designer said: "From first shots of these girls Priety Zinta, Rani Mukherji, Urmila till today, I have worked with them countless times and they are very close to me. I feel it's really nice that they are all in time, very supportive, very excited. It was really sweet of them." All the actresses were sporting western outfits. While Rani, Sangeeta and Priyanka were dressed in black, Priety was looking her best in a pink outfit and Sameera was dressed in a white gown. Sonakshi, who was also the showstopper for Narendra Kumar Ahmed's show, was sporting what she wore for the ramp - skin fitting jeans and a top. As far as the collection was concerned, the designer used hues of red, blue and black and dabbled them with heavy embroidery, zari, crystals, sequins and brocade to highlight the delicate motifs. Silhouettes were harem pants, salwars, sherwanis, lehengas and kalidar kurtas. Models were also seen flaunting saris and Jodhpur jackets in brocade and velvet combinations. |

Posted Image The 32-year-old bongshell accessorized with black classic pumps, black clutch, sparkling bracelet in her left arm, a ring in the left hand ring finger and a cocktail ring in her right hand index finger. Her hair, styled stick straight with a middle parting, draped her back with bangs framing her face. She wore thick kajal eyeliner, eyelash extensions and coco lipstick. Posted Image The Black star was in a very cheerful mood as she posed for photogs with Manish Malhotra and her Bollywood colleagues - Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Amisha Patel, Urmila Matondkar, Sameera Reddy and Sophie Chaudhury. Rani is looking good and in her element; hopefully she is ready to reassert her considerable talent and put some Bollywood PYTs in their place. |
