Rani Mukherjee featuring Vintage Glamour for L’Officiel Published on July 20, 2010 by Agency · Rani Mukerji features on the cover of L’Officiel Magazine’s India edition for the month of July 2010 in a strap less golden color gown. She represents vintage glamour in Dolce and Gabbana. The cover says ultimate watch issue but the watch she is wearing (the same one which she wore at peepli live music launch) seems out of place. The glove and fascinator are a great addition, but Rani’s make-up doesn’t seem to match up to the Vintage Glamour theme. Just to put in, Rani has again changed the spelling of her surname, though I doubt it will help in any way her sinking career and the toll bell signaling retirement. I am not a big fan of Miss Mukherjee, but thought I could post this for all the fans of this Bong Beauty. Like it, pals?? Let us know….. |

Sabyasachi’s collection an ode to India’s textile heritage Tuesday, July 20, 2010 10:40:31 PM by IANS Vidya Balan New Delhi, July 20 (IANS) Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, known for his love for Indian textiles and heritage, showcased yet another textile-driven collection on the opening day of the Pearls Infrastructure Projects Ltd (PIPL) Delhi Couture Week here Tuesday, where 80 percent of the line was khadi based. The line incorporated intricate craftsmanship from various parts of India - from block printing to kantha work - and used delicate khadi, natural dyes and a lot of zardosi work. The main show area had a museum-like feel with antique watches, trunks, bells and vintage photographs adorning the backdrop of the ramp. The models, in a typical Sabyasachi style - minimal make-up and a black bindi - gelled with the elaborated designs that had saris with ’seedha palla’, a lot of layering in terms of achkans over saris or suits, heavily embroidered blouses and lehengas. The line had something for men as well. The male models, with their long moustaches and broad rimmed spectacles, gave an epic feel to the show. Talking about the collection, Sabyasachi told IANS that it was all about rich Indian craftsmanship and heritage that our country has in plenty. “It is like going old school and coming up with something that we knew is there…I have always been a staunch supporter of Indian textiles and this is what I tried to showcase here as well,” Sabyasachi said. “The line is very romantic and gives the feel of a museum, something that is period, Victorian or simply antique,” he added. As the line was mainly in khadi, the colour palette was subtle, with hues of black, red, pale green and rustic orange, though some pieces saw the use of sequins as well. The show opened with the national anthem. According to Sabyasachi, “Jana Gana Mana” is one way of connecting to people and feel the patriotism everyone has. “I believe, a feeling one can get while listening to the national anthem is immense. It just brings us together as Indians,” the designer said. Though his two muses - Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji - were present at the show, they preferred to cheer for him while sitting in the audience. Vidya wore Sabyasachi’s sari but Rani preferred to wear a black jumpsuit. |

MSD inspires Bips to marry secretly! Zinia Sen, TNN, Jul 21, 2010, 12.00am IST It’s entertainment all day, literally, from now on. And the Bengali television viewers will vouch for it. Mahuaa Bangla, the most-awaited GEC, an initiative of Mahuaa Media Pvt. Ltd. that was launched amidst much fanfare at Pala, ITC Sonar, Kolkata, is full of promises. To begin with, it smacks of Bangaliana — from food to football — every Bengali passion finds place in the body of programmes. And when you add a beautiful face to the body, the effect has to be breathtaking. That’s what Bipasha Basu, the beautiful brand ambassador of the GEC did on her whirlwind tour of the city — she took the audience’s breath away. Draped in the whole six yards, looking every bit of the Bangali that she is, Bipasha spoke about her association with the channel. “Mahuaa Bangla has a very strong vision. There aren’t typical programmes. A lot of thought has gone into the channel. World Cup 2010 is just over and I’m superexcited about The Match, a football reality show. There are other programmes to suit Bengali sensibilities. For me, it’s tracing the cultural roots,” she said excitedly. So, lounging around in her swanky Mumbai apartment, does she flip through Bengali channels ever? “Now, I’m going to see all the programmes. Let me see them first and then I’ll like to have another set of discussion,” Bipasha said diplomatically. The moment the City of Joy was mentioned, her eyes lit up. The actor has to keep her visits discreet when her family is here. “For the most part, my family lives in Mumbai. So, I don’t worry much. But now that my father is here for a month, I’ll like to catch up with him. Obviously, it has to be a hush-hush affair. Tonight, we are having dinner and yes, I’m dying to have my fave chingri maach.” On being told that much has changed in the city over the past few years, she gave a curious glance. “Earlier, I would walk around the Gariahat market and Ballygunge almost every day. Mine is a huge family. I have lots of pishis. Kolkata was always fun. But nowadays stepping out has become a problem. Even if I want to see all that has changed in the city, I won’t be able to,” she rued. Then, as an afterthought, she added how being referred to as a Bong beauty in Bollywood has always made her proud. “I take total pride in being a Bengali. In fact, when Rahul Dholakia approached me to play a Kashmiri girl in Lamhaa, I asked him: ‘How is that possible? That I’m a Bengali is writ large on my face!’” While on Lamhaa, she said the recent ban of the film in Gulf countries has been a huge disappointment. “It’s unfair. I’m getting messages from fans in Dubai, Qatar and other countries, who were really looking forward to this film,” she got on the defensive. Coming to lighter stuff, the actor informed that she is yet to meet Mahi as he is playing the Sri Lankan Test series. “But he has certainly given me a cue — to get married secretly,” she laughed. Does being the brand ambassador of a Bengali channel mean that the Kolkata audience will be able to see a li’l more of her? “Not in serials. But talks are on. The channel is all set to produce 24 films — 12 feature and 12 digital films. If I get a film like Sab Choritro Kalponik, why not? Even now, I get messages from fans and friends, who can’t stop raving about it, having watched the film on DVD. But I would never allow anyone to dub for me again. I’ll have it signed on my contract,” she grinned, adding that she is waiting for Rituparno Ghosh’s Draupadi to take off. “We’ve discussed some 40 subjects, but I’m really keen on Draupadi. The dynamics of the character interests me. This time around, I’m going to call the director and remind him.” Talking about the projects in the pipeline, Prabodh Kumar Tewari, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahuaa Media Pvt. Ltd. and Century Communication Ltd., who’s all set to change the face of entertainment in Bengal, added that though he doesn’t have the list of directors ready just yet, Prakash Jha is all set to make films in Bengali. “He’s a close friend. Apart from him, Raj Chakrabarty, Riingo, Anjan Dutt, Basu Chatterjee, among others, will also be directing a few of our big screen projects.” When asked about the news channel, which is all set to launch in August, Tewari informed, “yes, we are coming up with a news channel and that too in a big way.” What about the buzz that another Bong beauty, Rani Mukerji, will be roped in as the brand ambassador? “Talks are on with her. Nothing has been finalised as yet. There are many more surprises in store,” he concluded. |

Rani & Vidya open Sabyasachi's show ARUNIMA SRIVASTAVA, Jul 21, 2010, 12.00pm IST Splendid is the word. And what more do you expect when it’s Sabyasachi Mukherjee we’re talking about. With a grand opening expected, and the hype being greater, Sabya lived up to both, and successfully. Talk of grandeur, flamboyance, royalty, novelty and exclusivity, Sabya’s collection had it all at the Pearls Infrastructure Project Ltd Delhi Couture Week. And expectedly so, once over, the applause just wouldn’t stop. It was after five years that Sabya had showed up in Delhi for a fashion event, and for the first time ever at the Couture Week, and yet perfection didn’t fail him. “Even though I wanted, I had been too tied up with work and commitments to have participated at the Couture Week earlier. But this time, it seemed a li’l more convenient and so I gave my nod. However, I’ve spent a tough sleepless last month to put this collection together so that I don’t disappoint my buyers,” said Sabya in all modesty. And how better could it have got with his two loyalist B’wood friends - Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan, having flown down to support the designer. Marking a new trend, Sabya opened his show with the two beauties walking down the ramp with him, doubling the excitement for all, right from the start. Though surprisingly, while Vidya, a true Sabya follower, came dressed in a pretty orange Sabya saree, Rani turned up in a black jumpsuit of another label. Theme: Inspired from Indian culture, Sabya put together a collection that was steeped in Indian traditions and ethnicity. He called his collection Aparajito, which opened with the national anthem playing in the background, as the audience stood and sang along. He said, “Indian tradition cannot be beaten, its simplicity cannot be beaten and its textiles cannot be beaten. And that’s what my collection stands for, and hence its name Aparajito. Plus, it so often goes unnoticed that my collection is actually a dedication to the Indian weaving industry.” Collection: With the collection dedicated to the weaving artisans, the show put together an enviable range of Indian attires – right from long extremely kalidaar kurtas, lehengas and sarees, to men spelling royalty in long black jackets paired with black jodhpurs. What doubled the whole feel was the dramatic setting, with the stage done up with antique wall clocks, tin boxes, wooden cupboards, vases and portraits, all to capture the ancient flavour. Trends to watch out for Silhouette: Extremely flowy forms for women, and rich jodhpur dressing for men. Detailing: The collection that stood for Indian culture, saw models sashaying in long kalidar kurtas, multi-coloured robes, parallel style salwars, with some in churidars as well. Models like Noyonika Chatterji, Indrani Das Gupta, Carol Gracias, Nethra Raghuraman looked stunning in Sabya’s exquisite designs reinstating what Indian beauty and grace is all about. Again for the effects, scenes from the film 1947 Earth were made to play in the backdrop. Embellishments: Indian embroidery and thread work was what most of the designs were about. Block printing was also used to give designs a different feel. Fabric: Handling a theme like India, it was mostly khadi that was used for the dresses. Pieces in cotton, velvet, chickan, tepchi, katha were also thrown in that only accentuated the designs. Accessories: Equal emphasis was paid to accessories as to the designs. While in case of women, one could see models walking with potlis hanging on their sides, in covered platform shoes, nose pins on either side, bindi on the forehead with glittery topi on their head, representing the true artisan form of sorts. As for male models, they were seen wearing specs, moustaches and topis too. Glitzy first row: Rani Mukerji with mom Krishna Mukherjee, Vidya Balan, designers Poonam Bhagat, Ritu Kumar, Anupama Dayal, animal right activist Maneka Gandhi, Swapna Roy and Sabina Chopra made front row indeed the one to watch out for. Stars talk: While Vidya called herself Sabya’s ‘stalker’ where designs are concerned, and walked the ramp in one of his creations too, Rani Mukerji laughed off the matter on why she turned up wearing a western outfit of another label. “My presence at Sabya’s show to support and cheer him speaks enough of my loyalty towards him. While it’s on different occasions and functions that you should actually check out if I’m wearing a Sabya creation or not. And that would speak of my loyalty yet again,” Rani retorted. As for the jumpsuit she wore for the show, Rani said, “So what if I’m not wearing a Sabya label, this jumpsuit alsoI bought with Sabya while shopping in London with him. And this neckpiece that I’m wearing is the one that he bullied me into buying.” Meanwhile, Sabyasachi, happily defended his friend saying, “It’s boring to wear Sabyasachi on a Sabyasachi show. I’d be happier if Rani wore my creations at other designers’ shows.” At another instance, Sabya quipped, “Whoever knows me knows me as Rani’s tailor in India. And I don’t think it’s going to change even if I won an Oscar someday.” For his designs on the ramp and its acceptance abroad, Sabya said, “My designs cater more to the NRI market who look for style, flamboyance with a touch of Indianness.” When asked if we’d ever see him doing western outfits, he smiled and said, “I think that would only be when it’s need based or when I’m being indulgent.” Working on Bollywood projects alongside he shared about the few films he has in hand, “I just did Raavan, then now it’s No One Killed Jessica and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish.” One last question we throw at him - What would a Sabyasachi girl be? “One who’s a firebrand and wears flats to a party,” retorted Sabya. |

Rani wore different outfit for Manish's show : ======================= High Volume TNN, Jul 21, 2010, 04.00pm IST They came, they saw and they sighed. For the ‘private clients’ with personal invitations and limitless pockets, the first day of the Pearls Infrastructure Projects Delhi Couture Week was all about unadulterated indulgence. The presentations and clothes by both Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Manish Malhotra were all about high volume – both in terms of acoustics and silhouettes. While both also showcased menswear, maximum eyes in the hall were rivetted only on the womens’ ensembles. One thing we couldn’t figure out, though: Rani Mukerji’s new found love for jumpsuits. Can the fashion critics do something, please? Ramp master Since Sabyasachi Mukherjee showed in Delhi after a gap of five years, the huge turnout for his opening show was neither astonishing nor unexpected. While Swapna Roy (Mrs Subrata Roy) waited for more than an hour for it to begin, many arrived in their favourite Sabya outfits to complete the ‘show’. Of course, his friends from B-town – Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji – drew all the attention to the first row. The collection, titled Aparajito (meaning unvanquished) was, said Sabya, part of a specific period in Indian history around the Indian National Movement. Voluminous silhouettes, reminiscent of stately Mughal dressing, with signature Sabya elements like translucent skirts, muted embroidery on cotton completed the look. Sabya had a surprise too – just before the show began, everyone was asked to switch off their mobile phones and stand up for the national anthem, to create an ambience to go with the independence era theme. The background score he’d chosen was from flicks like 1947 A Love Story and Aamir. Post the show, we heard many talking about how the lilting music was so catching, that it took away the focus from the clothes. MY FLAIR LADY Manish Malhotra, we heard, was a bit jittery when he first decided to showcase in Delhi, but Tuesday night would’ve put all his apprehensions to rest – permanently, we hope. Delhi’s social circuit regulars turned up for his show, while the not so regular ones like Natasha Nanda too were there. Of course, the front row also saw fellow designers Rohit Gandhi-Rahul Khanna cheer and scream for Manish. Also, since both friends Rani and Vidya were in the same hotel, they occupied the front now in this show too, though Rani had changed her outfit for the show. Manish’s clothes were true testimony to his strengths – glam and colour combos. Ensembles in shades of cream, beige and autumn seemed prominent. He had experimented with volume. Post the show too, Manish was busy – packing up. He flew out of the country that very night. “I wouldn’t be able to stick around for the rest of the shows. I’m now headed to London for work on Ra.One with Kareena. Then I have a show in India. Then I have to go to Prague for Imtiaz’s movie and then finally to Spain for Katrina.” Talk about a jet, set, go schedule! Door ki baat Everyone expected the anxiously awaited cast of No One Killed Jessica – Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji (circled in the picture)– to promote their movie through the couture week, but the actresses, it seemed, didn’t think likewise. Both the actresses walked into the main show area a few minutes apart for the first show, and were also seated on the same side of the front row side. But while Vidya preferred to sit with Sabina Chopra, Rani sat between her mother and another guest towards the other end of the row. While the two laughed heartily in the company of common friend Sabya, there was no show of camaraderie between the two at other times. In tune with rumours of the two not seeing eye to eye on the sets of the film, this was certainly a case in point! Ladies’ tales Politico and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi was a rather unexpected presence at the Pearl Infrastructure and Projects Ltd Delhi Couture Week. But then, as they say, expect the unexpected, right? Maneka came with Garima Jain and Ambika Shukla for Sabya’s show. But this wasn’t her debut appearance at a fashion event. When she met designer Ritu Kumar, Ritu reminded her of the time when she was last seen at a fashion show. “Oh! That was many, many years ago,” said Maneka with a smile. She left soon after Sabya’s show, saying she liked it very much. Also present was Swapna Roy, Subrata Roy Sahara’s wife, who, as we’ve already told you, waited quite a while for the show to begin. |

A touch of Spain in Manish's collection Glitzy first row: Straight after Sabyasachi’s show, Rani Mukerji was there to support her friend Manish Malhotra with mom Krishna Mukherjee too. But this time she was in a changed dress and out of her jumpsuit that she wore for Sabya’s show. Vidya Balan was too seen in plated hair this time round as opposed to her open hair look for Sabyasachi show. What was worth noticing was that she kept wearing the Sabyasachi saree for the Manish’s show as well. Among others there were designers like Ritu Kumar, Rahul and Rohit Gandhi and JJ Valaya. |

Vidya and Manish patch up as she walks in at his fashion do Prashant Singh Mumbai, July 25, 2010 Actor Vidya Balan drew a flak from the critics for her attire in Heyy Babyy. Vidya Balan and fashion designer Manish Malhotra, who had a public falling- out over her much-criticised wardrobe in the film, Heyy Babyy , made up at the ongoing fashion week in Delhi. Vidya surprised all by turning up for Malhotra's show at the event. "I am ecstatic that Vidya attended my show. I am extremely touched by her gesture. It speaks a lot for the unity in the film industry. We are always there for one another," said Malhotra, adding that he had also invited close friend Rani Mukherjee for his fashion spectacle. "I called up Rani for my show and she readily agreed. I wasn't surprised that she came for my show since we go back a long way. But it was touching when Vidya too confirmed her presence after my call," added Malhotra. Rani and Vidya were in Delhi for Sabyasachi Mukherjee's show at the same event. For those who came in late, Vidya and Malhotra were involved in a bitter spat after Heyy Babyy. Vidya had openly panned Malhotra for her look in the 2007 hit. Not only did she draw flak from the critics, even Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan gave her a special spoof award for bad dressing while hosting a popular awards function. Malhotra's retort to Vidya's accusations that he had spoilt her look in Heyy Babyy had been a sarcastic one. "I am sorry to do this to a big star like Vidya, India's answer to Paris Hilton with her fabulous carriage, impeccable dress sense and great knowledge of style," he had said. "How can she speak about fashion with her fantastic figure? Who is she?" Three years later, Malhotra is in no mood to rake up the past again. "Let bygones be bygones. Whatever we said to and about each other is in the past," said Malhotra, adding: "If we get a great offer, I'll be glad to work with Vidya again." Vidya and Rani had initially gone to attend Sabyasachi's show that kicked off the Couture Week. But after Malhotra invited the two actresses, they decided to stay back for his show too. The fashion designer played the perfect host by arranging front row seats for both stars. The three caught up after the show. Meanwhile, Vidya has reportedly opted out of Inder Kumar's Dhamaal 2 because she was neither happy with her fee nor her role. It's believed that she asked for around Rs 1.5 crore for the film. It seems Vidya and the makers of Dhamaal 2 couldn't agree on a price despite long discussions. Currently, Vidya is wrapping up Rajkumar Gupta's No One Killed Jessica after delivering hits such as Paa and Ishqiya . She co-stars with Rani in Gupta's film. |

The queen of B’wood is in exile, so which celeb can bring her back to the throne? by Sonali Raha Rani MukerjiAamir KhanKaran JoharAbhishek BachchanShah Rukh Khan AAMIR KHAN Mr Perfectionist should be able to create that perfect role for his friend. Perhaps a movie on an ageing star who is being ignored by everyone? And then a mystery man steps out of the shadows with an irresistible offer… Of course, we’re expecting Aamir to produce, direct and act in the movie. Plus give it the full backing of his giant promotional machinery. KARAN JOHAR We’d love K-Jo to make a full-on melodrama, filled with touching flashbacks, incurable illnesses and colour co-ordinated rain songs. The main heroine? Rani, of course! Perhaps a Prinks or Bebo can float somewhere in the background… And the hero? SRK, but naturally! ABHISHEK BACHCHAN They looked incredibly cute together at one point, so it’s time a far-seeing director brought the jodi back on screen (even if a certain stunning wife screams the theatre down). We’re seeing them in a fun, adventurous movie, more Bunty Aur Babli and less Laaga Chunari.… And one more reason why Abhi should insist on acting with Rani: she could lift up his career from the Raavan pit. SHAH RUKH KHAN Apart from starring in K-Jo’s melodrama, we suggest SRK take a leap into director-hood himself! All for the sake of giving Rani a sensitive, intelligent, 21st century role that stays on in our minds when the song-and-dance fades – a la Konkona’s character in Wake Up Sid. |

Confident Act Aroma Sah, Hindustan Times New Delhi, July 28, 2010 Actress Rani Mukerji is awaiting the release of her film No One Killed Jessica in December, for which she shot in the Capital extensively. On a recent visit to Delhi, the actress recalled her experience. “The only experience I can vividly remember during the shooting of the film is feeling cold during the Delhi winter. That is something we all Mumbaikars miss. Rani MukerjeeThat is also the one thing that made me feel like I’m in some foreign land — wearing all those warm clothes. To be in Delhi during the winters is truly a great experience,” says Rani, whose film is reportedly inspired by the controversial Jessica Lal murder case. With no other film in hand, and her last release Dil Bole Hadippa having bombed at the box office, critics have said Rani’s days as Bollywood’s reigning queen are long gone, and younger actresses have replaced her. She retorts, “That does not affect me because when we were new, the critics said the same thing about senior actresses of that time. It’s just a cycle, which keeps on repeating. It’s best to keep doing what is good for your career. I am now at a point in my career where I am picking and choosing my scripts and there are directors who are writing scripts around me.” Shooting down rumours around her marriage, Rani, who walked the ramp for designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee at the recently concluded Delhi Couture Week, says, “I haven’t thought about it right now. I will get married when the time is right.” Finally, can we expect to see her join Twitter anytime soon? “No plans of joining any social networking site as of now,” is all Rani has to say... for now. |

After a fallout with stylist Manish Malhotra over the criticism she received for her look in Heyy Babyy, all that people were focusing on was her appearance. Soon things started changing for the better. She lost many a kilo, stocked up her wardrobe with Sabyasachis, and bagged lucrative roles alongside veterans like Naseeruddin Shah in Ishqiya and Amitabh Bachchan in Paa. Two hit films and a slew of awards later, this beauty is now the one having the last laugh as directors, including the legendary artist-filmmaker M F Husain, are vying for her attention. “The last year has been eventful indeed. All the negativity is behind me and this is the best phase of my career. It allows me to choose the projects I wish to do.” Seated on a couch by the window in her recently-acquired apartment in Khar — another significant achievement — she glances at the traffic and the lights below. The room is tastefully done and a touch of ethnicity —that also dominates her new wardrobe — is evident in the elegant cane single-seaters, the old-world study table and the warm green, yellow and red tones of the upholstery. “My sister is the one more aesthetically tuned in. So I would often consult her in Delhi while deciding how we wanted the house done up.” But unlike many of her contemporaries, Balan has chosen to move into her new apartment along with her family. “My loved ones consider this house as a huge achievement on my part but I am just not the kind of person to live alone if my family is in this city. I get all the independence living with them, so why live alone?” she quips. Having recently wrapped up the shooting of Rajkumar Gupta’s No One Killed Jessica alongside Rani Mukerji, she is now back in the city. The movie, she confesses, is one of her most important films. “It’s a very different experience since it has an element of realism in it. And to work with Rani has been gratifying.” |

Cricket is not a man’s game: Rani Mukherjee Friday, August 06, 2010 2:29:32 AM by IANS ( Leave a comment ) New Delhi, Aug 6 (IANS) Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee who was last seen hitting boundary shots in “Dil Bole Haddipa” says cricket is not a man’s game. This is just an illusion under which people live. “Since childhood, girls are always discouraged to play sports and are given certain guidelines as cricket is a man’s game, which is just an illusion under which people live,” Rani told reporters here Thursday at the launch of a docu-drama “Poor Cousins of Million Dollar Babies”. “After being a part of it and knowing the nitty-gritty of it, what I have gathered is cricket is not a man’s game - it is not about power but is all about technique.” “Poor Cousins of Million Dollar Babies” is directed by Sunil Yash Kalra. The docu-drama focuses on the women’s cricket team of India. “The film is not just a tale of disparities among men and women in the cricketing arena, but a story of the triumph of women’s cricket despite the disparities that prevail,” said Kalra. Researched, scripted and filmed by Kalra, the docu-drama captures the camaraderie between former captain Anjum Chopra and current skipper Jhulan Goswami, and former vice-captain Rumeli Dhar and present vice-captain Amita Sharma. The 27-minute film was shot over a span of four years in South Africa, Australia, England, West Indies and India and includes footage from various matches as well as even from the girls’ changing room. Rani, however, expressed her disappointment regarding the title of the film. “The concept, the ideology comes across very positively but the name is disappointing. The tag of ‘Poor Cousins’ brings a negative vibe along with it. It could have been ‘Better Half of Million Dollar Babies’. The official poster of the film was unveiled by “Chak De” writer Jaideep Sahni, Rani Mukherjee and former captain Anjum Chopra along with director Sunil Kalra and producer Bava Mahdood. |

Rani launch cricket docudrama in Delhi Garima Sharma, TNN, Aug 9, 2010, 12.00am IST http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb.c...00&resizemode=4 Hard to get? It was Rani Mukerji’s second visit to Delhi within a fortnight, but the actress remained as elusive as ever. Not only did Rani maintain a distance from the guests, choosing to mingle only with those who were on stage with her at this do, but she also addressed queries on only sports – the topic for the evening. And, within minutes of the event ending, she vanished from behind the stage to her room. Play ball: But, during her presence on stage for the launch of Sunil Yash Kalra’s cricket docudrama, Rani made for a cheerful presence, happily chatting about her love for cricket, post her role in the debacle “Dil Bole Hadippa”, and anecdotes about the film. Talking about the need to support Indian women cricketers and their cause, she said that Bollywood could play a critical role here. She added, “My little niece wanted to buy a cricket set after she saw me in “Dil Bole Hadippa”.” Rani also confessed her love for cricket, saying that ever since she shot for the movie two years ago, she’s been hooked to the sport. ’ Cause she loves it: Meanwhile, former Indian women’s cricket team captain Anjum Chopra was anchoring a different pitch – the panel discussion on the need to focus on women’s cricket. While the director, Sunil, spoke about how it’s taken him four years to research and put the docudrama together, Anjum appreciated the producer Bava Mahdoom’s support for the movie. Anjum, who had been busy ironing out last minute glitches, told us that she had been at the venue since 11 in the morning, but still was not exhausted because the cause was extremely dear to her! Aamir Khan called for “Peepli Live” panchayat on Tuesday PostDateIconThursday, 12 August 2010 05:40 | PostAuthorIconWritten by Monia Gupta Bollywood’s celebrities amassed together to be part of “Peepli Live’s” panchayat that was hosted by its producer Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao in Khar, Mumbai on Tuesday. It is yet another wonderful product from bigwig’s production house. And he held its exclusive screening for his friends from industry who graced the event. No doubt it was splendid night where stars went crazy to watch the movie. B-town mega stars seemed to be magnetized towards the small village named Peepli. Dabangg cop Salman Khan appeared with his on screen Rajo, Sonakshi Sinha and his little sis Alvira Agnihotri. Salman Khan seemed to be departed from Chulbul Pandey’s looks. Deepika Padukone and Sidhartha Mallya, the couple on gossip posters, rolled up together. That was perhaps the superb occasion for them to spend quality time in sync. Aamir’s close female friends Rani Mukherji and Juhi Chawala made their courteous presence. Rani Mukherji was looking lovely in her grey colored blouson attire embellished with orange embossed chain. Veteran actor Anil Kapoor was also spotted there. Other guests of the event were charming Kangana Ranaut, 3 Idiots’ director Raju Hirani, talented Vaibhavi Merchant, renowned director Aziz Mirza. Apart from industry, the guest of honor at the preview of “Peepli Live” was world-class cricketer Sachin Tendulkar along with his wife, Anjali. Sachin admired the movie and said that it was very nice and very touching. “Peepli Live” received magnificent reviews from Bollywood’s major players. Salman Khan became great fan of Aamir Khan. He even awarded him the title “Mr.Midas Touch” means he has the competence to turn soil into gold. He said that “Peepli Live” is must see movie especially for fourth estate. Salman answered every question posed by media persons in same one line and that was press must see the movie. He literally insisted them not to forget to watch the movie. Rani came out with Aamir and went her way. She was avoiding media as she thinks that media keeps on peeping into her personal life all the time. Anil Kapoor was located as lonesome person seemed to be thinking as if such crowd of stars would have appeared in the screening of his movie “Aisha”. “Peepli Live” pivotal character, Natha was no more looking like impoverished farmer. He stood by his producer Aamir Khan seeing off the guests of the night. |

NO ONE KILLED RANI Have you heard the rumours that Rani Mukerji has turned into a recluse, that she sees no one anymore? That she is the new Rekha? AASTHA ATRAY BANAN set out to meet her on a rainy night and came away startled image PHOTO: DEEPAK SALVI ‘To me, being exclusive and being mysterious is what makes a star. I guess that’s why I haven’t changed at all,’ says Rani Mukerji MUMBAI IS FULL of bored jibes about Rani Mukerji. She is over. She smells of failure. She is too short, too old to work in slick, new Bollywood. She is married to Aditya Chopra. She is just living with him like she did with Govinda. The senior Chopras hate her and she has to clear out whenever they are around. They don’t care about her. Alongside snippets about her role in the forthcoming Rajkumar Gupta film, No One Killed Jessica, fly fantastical rumours that she has turned into a Rekha-like figure. Could it be that the girl with the polarising tenor (love it, hate it, deal with it), the caper-loving Babli, the girl who played any number of overwrought, teary good girls has turned into a Garboesque recluse who ‘vants’ to be alone? Rani is certainly not the kind of actress you trip over at Gloria Jeans in Bandra and chat up. A couple of weeks of phone calls are the investment required for an appointment. On the day, there is a tremendous downpour and Rani is late and you wonder. Has her poor run with men sunk her in self-pity? Has Rani succumbed to depression because of failure? Waiting outside in a Mumbai storm can foster any dark, Gothic ideas you might be nurturing. Reality turns out to be rather different. In her opulently done Juhu pad, with huge mirrors and vintage rugs, the big, wide trademark smile is in place but Rani Mukerji is an unnerving presence. The warm hazel eyes are steely enough to make you squirm a little in your seat. The cruel tabloids may be dying to feature her in the ‘where are they now’ section but Rani’s aura seems to have magnified several fold. Could it be that she has grown? At 32, she looks better than she ever has. Yoga has made her slender. Dressed in a short skirt and minimal makeup, she retains a regal air. Lauren Bacall once said, “I am not a has-been. I am a willbe.” Rani would approve of Bacall’s style. It is unlikely she has read the quote though. She doesn’t read, she says. Unlike several young ladies who manufacture reputations as frenetic readers and think that Jane Austen was a Victorian and thinks Omair Ahmed is a medieval poet, Rani says flatly that she does not read. ‘I don’t read much — I have an allergy to the smell of books. Really!’ Rani makes these revelations but this is no invitation to get closer. You are always painfully aware of the Lakshman Rekha around her, one she will never cross and you better not even try to. She has no desire to be thought of as Everywoman. As she makes clear when you gird your loins and ask her about the rumours that she has turned into a hermit. She launches into a surprising and convincing discourse on the nature of fame and how it has changed in the 15 years that she has been in Bollywood. “I blame it on Twitter. Everyone has become so accessible. Today, stars function and manage themselves very differently. They chart down everything they do daily. They give stories about themselves to the press and even about other stars! There are stories about stars buying a new phone, stars fainting… when did this all become news?” she says part resigned, part disgusted. “When I started, things were done differently and film journalism was not about churning out tabloid titbits. To me, being exclusive and being mysterious is what makes a star. I guess that’s why I haven’t changed at all.” She rarely calls herself a heroine, an actress or even the now-popular actor — only star. image ‘She became too uppity after she got famous; that led to her downfall. You shouldn’t let fame get to you,’ says film critic Khalid Mohamed UP, DOWN, ROUND ABOUT Even committed Rani haters would find it hard to deny her star quotient. She arrived with Raja ki Aayegi Baraat, but got noticed opposite Aamir Khan in Ghulam (1998). Her breakthrough moment came when she bagged Kuch Kuch Hota Hai opposite her now close friend Shah Rukh Khan, directed by another close friend Karan Johar. (She once described Shah Rukh as the best thing that ever happened to heroines.) With Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black and Mani Ratnam’s Yuva, Rani was once at the top of the Bollywood hill. But fame has been fickle. Despite her talent and the much sought-after girl-next-door vibe, things started going downhill soon after. Heckled at by the press and critics, her alleged love affairs with the much-married Govinda and then the muchmarried Aditya Chopra, added fuel to the fire. Rani remained quiet through it all. And hence began a different rumour mill, which asked why (like Chopra whom only the shadow knows) Rani was never seen in public? Sipping hot water out of a mug which has the phrase ‘drama queen’ in big, black letters, Rani looks stoic when asked why she has not cleared the air. “I possibly couldn’t have given a clarification every week. It’s not in my nature to call up a journalist and say, ‘why did you say this about me’. They questioned my character and that really bothered me. I am sure directors got turned off and may have not offered me movies. When I get married, I will tell everyone,” she says. So she is not a recluse but who are her friends in the industry? The girl next door who has acted in some of the soppiest, why-can’t-we-all-get-along movies of the decade, answers, “Friendship is a complex word. I can only tell you who my real friends are when I am old and my children have left me. The people who will spend time with me then will be my true friends.” As for now, there is her family whom she shares this house with. Filmmakers who have worked with her, like Kunal Kohli, vouch that Rani has always been reticent and seriously invested in her family. Her Lakshman Rekha is not a new phenomenon but it just suits the new ‘loser’ narrative to make it seem so. At some point in the conversation, she says, “When you are on the top, people want to bring you down. And they will say anything to do so. But I believe in karma, and it will all come back to them.” This is the same cosmic and vengeful balancing of scales that Rani’s detractors have also been wishing for her. Well-known film journalist Khalid Mohamed says, “She became too uppity after she got famous and that led to her downfall. I know a co-star of hers who told me that Rani started telling him ‘how to act’. But see, she came tumbling down. You should not let fame get to your head.” Others are more compassionate and a little more logical. Rauf Ahmed, the first journalist who Rani gave her first interview, speaks of her fondly and adds, “the media is cruel. Even if you mess up once, they take you down badly. And then the whole Aditya Chopra rumour hurt her. And she is so talented, that’s what makes this so sad.” But “sadness” is not an emotion Rani subscribes to. Instead, you see a small, slightly injured but visibly annoyed human being, who is not going to give her detractors the satisfaction of seeing her retreat without a fight. “I don’t need to sign many movies just to prove I exist, even though this may be the worst time in my career. I don’t need to go to all social events — I go if I am really needed; if someone just sends me a message on my phone, why will I go? I have done my time doing that. But there’s no limit to what I can do.” AND STRAIGHT AHEAD In Rajkumar Gupta’s No One Killed Jessica, a film inspired by the Jessica Lall case, Rani plays an investigative television journalist. Would she do a meaty role in a movie even if it wasn’t the lead? In an industry where actors prattle off practised, meaningless answers about meaningful roles, Rani makes it clear that she is not interested in crumbs. She says definitively, as if she has it all planned, “No way. I will always be the star in a movie I am in. I’d love to do a movie with an ensemble cast, but a star always is the star. Whatever role I would do would become the lead, right?” And that’s another reason why it’s unnerving to sit across Rani. It’s because the coy, politically correct Rani we got so used to hearing about, has metamorphosed into a grownup. The girl who has made a career of being adorable, is no longer interested in pleasing people. Today, even though she has just one release lined up, she is unfazed. But now that Rani has stopped playing cute, can she make a career of it? |
