Rani inspired by Barkha Dutt

Directed by Rajkumar Gupta of the Aamir fame, No One Killed Jessica is based on the murder of Delhi model Jessica Lall in 1999 and the long legal battle to get justice for her.

The first schedule was shot in the capital at a farmhouse in Chatarpur. The movie also stars Vidya Balan as Jessica Lall’s sister Sabrina, who fought relentlessly for justice for her sister’s murder.
But Rani Mukherji who desperately needs a hit at the box office is playing a journalist who helps Vidya get justice.

“Rani plays a scribe in the film. She is a news reporter and broadcaster. And using her station and power, she helps Jessica’s sister get public support and justice,” says our source.

In fact, a lot of Rani’s scenes in a newsroom have been filmed at the NDTV studios. And the buzz suggests that Rani's role is inspired by noted reporter Barkha Dutt’s role in the entire case.

“Rani spent a lot of time watching visuals and tapes from that time. She also met with Barkha and other reporters from NDTV who worked on the case, to get a real understanding so that she can pull off her job convincingly,” adds our source.

The actress also spent a lot of time in getting her look right for the movie. We hear the actress did all her shopping in London for the movie.

“During pre-production, Rani was clear about her look, what she would wear, etc. and she also wanted to shop in London for it. So there was no choice but for the stylist on the movie to accompany her to London as she shopped for the role,” says our source.

No One Killed Jessica is scheduled for release on December 10, 2010.

I trust and respect Sanjay: Rani Mukerji

Mumbai: A lot has been said in the past about actor Rani Mukerji and film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali not getting along well with each other. It was reported that Rani went around telling people that she was hurt because Sanjay had chosen Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan over her for Guzaarish. Before this, it was apparently reported that Rani had disappointed Sanjay by backing out of his sister Bela’s movie starring Shahid Kapoor citing he was too young for her but then went on to do a Yash Raj film with the same actor.

However, it seems such news didn’t affect Rani as she gave us ample hints that she was thick with her once-favourite director.

“Many things have been written about a discord between Sanjay and me. I can tell you one thing that if he calls me today to do a movie, I will do it immediately. That’s how much I trust and respect Sanjay and his vision. If I was fighting, would I be in a position to say all this?” Rani states.

She adds, “Sanjay is someone who trusted me with roles and I hope I have lived up to his expectations. He and I understand each other very well and I think it’s a matter of time when we will do something together. We just have to wait for Sanjay to think what he would want me to play.”

In the past many people in the industry contemplated that one of the reasons that Rani lost her numero uno slot was because of her sour relationships with many big personalities in Bollywood. Rani has not been seen working with the Bachchans post Abhishek’s marriage with Aishwarya. Then, she is not even doing a movie with Shah Rukh Khan. But Rani doesn’t want to delve too much into these talks.

She says, “No one remembers now if Nutan or Nargis was number one. No one asks if Rekha or Jaya Bachchan was number one. They simply love their movies because they feel they were the best actors who gave people some memorable movies.”

She ends saying, “All these comparisons and the number game is fine with me. I always chose quality over quantity. I know that 20 years down the line I will still be considered as one of the best actors ever produced by Bollywood.”

Bhansali, Resul patch up!
SUBHASH K JHA , Apr 13, 2010, 11.28am IST

Sanjay Bhansali seems determined to mend fences with all those friends who have drifted away from him. Especially since Guzaarish is ready for release, and he needs the positive vibes.

Sanjay recently patched up with Farah Khan, who sent him his favourite pulao on his birthday (and he reciprocated by sending his mother’s fish fry which Farah loves). Now it’s the turn of another friend, sound designer Resul Pookutty, to re-enter his life.

Resul, who created the sound design of Black and Saawariya, had fallen out with Sanjay, who then had to bring in someone else for Guzaarish. Last week, Resul finally broke the ice when he met Sanjay.

Says Sanjay, “Our differences were created by vested interests. Once Resul and I sat down together, he explained why the misunderstandings had happened. That was it. Resul is a wonderful human being and a great artiste. To not work with him would be my loss.”

Sure enough, Resul will work in Sanjay Bhansali’s next project, a grand historical drama with an intricate music and sound design. “One feels so unburdened after ironing out differences with friends,” says the director, who now intends to sort things out with Rani Mukerji. “Rani has been and always will be one of my dearest friends. We can never be upset with one another for too long.”

Reel and real joy

Sabrina Lall tells HT City she can finally close the door to the past

Navdeep Kaur Marwah navdeep.marwah@hindustantimes.com

Sabrina Lall is a relieved woman. On Monday, hours after the Supreme Court upheld the conviction and life imprisonment of Manu Sharma, son of senior politician Vinod Sharma, for the 1999 murder of her sister Jessica Lall, Sabrina told HT City she will now have “peace of mind“ “After 11 long years of trials and tribulations, I can party and relax now. The final door has been closed on this episode and the convicts cannot appeal anywhere now. This gives me immense happiness and satisfaction,“ said Sabrina.

Interestingly, the verdict comes as director Raj Kumar Gupta's film, No One Killed Jessica based on the contro- versial murder case, is also being shot in the city. Actress Vidya Balan plays Sabrina, while Rani Mukherjee plays a journalist in the film.

Asked if this verdict will reflect a change in the script of the movie, Sabrina said, “I don't think so. Because the movie ends on a very promising and positive note.“

Sabrina is quite excited about the film. “I haven't met Vidya but I've spoken to her several times. I have read the film's script and I am very happy with the way Raj Kumar Gupta has written it,“ she said.

Vidya is also reported to have said in an interview, “This is my first autobio- graphical role. The minute I heard it, I wanted to do it.
Sabrina and I will meet soon.
I'm quite excited. I'm taking it as a big challenge.“

Rani Mukherjee all set to don a director's hat!
By DC, 20 April, 2010

Rani Mukherjee all set to don a director's hat!Rani Mukherjee may have been missing in action for a long time now, but latest buzz has it that the actress is all set to make a place for herself behind the camera. Rani, who has been maintaining a low profile lately, is keen on trying her hand at direction.

“Rani is almost done with her script and she wants to helm the project herself. The film is expected to hit the floors by next year. Backing the project will her favourite banner, Yash Raj Films. If all goes well, Yash Raj will produce the film,” said a source.

It may be known that Rani Mukherjee has only film on hand — Rajkumar Gupta’s Who Killed Jessica. It is after a long time that Rani signed a film outside the Yash Raj banner. Reportedly, the actress has been offered several scripts, but none have excited her. She was more keen on completing her own script and wants to do one film at a time till then.

Jessica film shoot at IP, VC stranded
TNN, Apr 21, 2010, 12.51am IST

NEW DELHI: Dilip Bandopadhyay, vice-chancellor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, was prevented from entering his own campus on Monday. Reason: Actress Vidya Balan was shooting for the film, No One Killed Jessica, on the university grounds. So while Bandopadhyay haggled with bouncers — on guard outside the main gate — to let him in, the cameras rolled allegedly without the VC's permission.

After making several frantic phone calls to his staff, the fuming VC had to enter the university from another gate. The crew continued shooting for the rest of the day. Much to the VC's dismay, the School of Information Technology, which has a colonial facade, was made to look like Patiala House court for a sequence in the film.

Bandopadhyay has set up a three-member committee to inquire into the incident. "I arrived at 10.10 am and saw a sea of people. The main gate was closed. At first I thought the rush was due to the sale of forms. Then I was told I could not enter the university. Nobody informed me about the shooting," said Bandopadhyay.

The varsity is also taking legal opinion to decide if they can take action against the film crew. The film is being directed by Raj Kumar Gupta.

Bandopadhyay said: "After I entered the university from another side, I called the registrar and senior officers to check our files and find out if the film crew had permission to shoot."

According to the VC, the producers had written to a consultant in the varsity's Centre for Media Studies on March 26 that they wanted to shoot on the campus for an untitled feature film. The letter mentioned that the shooting experience would be useful for the students of media studies. "The consultant forwarded a note to other officials but never sought my permission. The producers should have mentioned that the shooting would be for a commercial film and that Vidya Balan would be a part of it," Bandopadhyay said.

He said the university has 12 different schools and various procedures have been decentralised. Sources said that's probably how the consultant got away without directly informing the VC. "If they had obtained the permission to shoot through right channels, they would have to pay a fee for using the campus. We would also have informed the police for crowd management," Bandopadhyay said.

Students were, however, excited to see Balan. Rumours of actress Rani Mukherjee also visiting the campus spread like wildfire. "We came in around 10am and saw the School of Information Technology converted into Patiala House. They even had notary officers sitting outside the corridors," said a student.

However, UTV, which is producing the film, denied the charge that they were shooting without permission. UTV officials said they had permission to shoot for eight hours on the campus. "We wish to clarify that this is absolutely incorrect and we put on record that we had sought permission to shoot from 9am to 5 pm," they said.

"Monday was the last day of the admissions and there was a huge crowd in the college and they were all keen to see Vidya, which delayed the shoot for which we sought a further extension of two hours," they added.

Vidya gets mobbed in Delhi
Garima Sharma, TNN, Apr 22, 2010, 12.00am IST

The first scene being shot in the campus
On Monday, swelling crowds, unexpected rain and irked college authorities played spoilsport as the cast and crew of No One Killed Jessica tried to can two sequences at the campus. It was the last day of admissions at the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), and students who had come for admission were pleasantly surprised when they found actress Vidya Balan there. Vidya plays the role of Jessica Lall’s sister Sabrina in the flick.

The crew had reached the location at 7 in the morning, but, the crowd stalled the shooting for several hours, continuously mobbing Vidya for autographs. A unit source says, “Vidya was mobbed, in the positive sense of course, for autographs. In fact, she must have signed at least a hundred!” Once the crowd dissipated in the afternoon, the shooting started again. It was a courtroom sequence, for which, a section of the campus, had been converted to resemble the Patiala House court.

Crew member Abhishek Banerjee has a cameo in the film and portrays the role of a pickpocket, trying to navigate the crowd outside the courtroom. This was the first scene canned. This is when the convicts and Sabrina Lall go to court for the first time. Interestingly, the policemen in the scene were wearing their winter uniform. In TOI’s earlier report on the shooting of the film at a cemetery in Khan Market, both Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji were also dressed in winter clothes.

The source tells us, “There were two courtroom episodes in the story. The first one was when Manu was acquitted and the second when he was charged. Both the scenes had to be shot, one in summer clothes and the other in winter clothes.” But, when the shooting for the second scene started, it began raining again, and the light was lost for the day. However, due to the hullabaloo around shoot in the campus, the crew will now not return to the campus to complete the sequence. In all probability, they will shoot the sequence in Mumbai, where the next schedule of the movie will begin in May.

The second sequence was shot in the older part of the university’s building, which houses the computer science department. It depicts the entry and exit of the convicts in the the courtroom. The entire alley was sealed. Two actors were part of the scene, one presumably playing Manu Sharma, and the other Vikas Yadav.
The next scene was that of Vidya coming to the court. But rain played spoilsport and the shoot was wrapped for the day.

SUNA HAI...
Manu Sharma’s role is being played by a newcomer; his screen name is Manish Bhardwaj
All the characters have fictitious names, except Sabrina Lall and her family
There are almost 200 actors in the movie
The character of the cop investigating the case is being played by Rajesh Sharma, who was a part of Khosla Ka Ghosla
Except Vidya Balan, Rani Mukerji and Rajesh Sharma, most actors in the movie are theatre artistes

Rani, Vidya cordial but not friendly
Mail Today Bureau
Mumbai, April 21, 2010

If you thought Rani Mukherji and Vidya Balan would get along while shooting for Rajkumar Gupta's No One Killed Jessica, you were wrong.

During the first week of the shoot, they were cordial to each other - even to the extent of being friendly. But soon their interest in each other dwindled.

When they met for the second schedule, they reportedly acted like strangers. They came together only when a scene was being shot or discussed; once done they settled in their vans.

Rumour has it that Vidya wanted to be friendly but when she learnt Rani was giving her inputs for the scenes, she backed off.

Guess Rajkumar must be feeling sandwiched between the two!

With Vidya & Rani ‘No One Killed Jessica’ at AIIMS!!

Posted on 22 April 2010 by Jyoti Singh

The beauty of Bollywood – Vidya Balan is coming in Raj Kumar Gupta’s latest movie ‘No One Killed Jessica’. The movie is based on the cruel murder of Delhi based model Jessica Lall by Manu Sharma in a bar. Its some important scenes are shot at the trauma centre of AIIMS in Delhi.

Rani Mukerji is playing the role of a journalist in the film. It is reported that shooting of the movie will take place at ramp, in hospital and AIIMS Delhi and not on any set like any normal film.

The Director Raj Kumar Gupta wants a realistic movie as possible and for the same reason Vidya Balan is in the character of Jessica’s elder sister Sabrina Lall who camr forward to fight to make punished to criminal Manu Sharma.

Vidya Balan had earlier played the tough role of Amitabh Bachchan’s mother in the movie ‘Paa’. Once again she accepted the challenging role that should be realistic.

The director Raj Kumar Gupta has confidence to make a realistic movie like his earlier flicks ‘Aamir’ with Rajeev Khandelwal.

Rani's surprise visit to Juhi
TNN, Apr 23, 2010, 12.00am IST

Juhi Chawla’s brother is still battling it out at the hospital, and while she’s there with him through all this, she’s got a whole bunch of well-wishers from the industry supporting her.

Apart from her innermost circle like SRK’s family, Aziz Mirza and others, she has so much of goodwill in Bollywood that everyone is hoping and praying for Bobby’s recovery. One of the surprise visitors at the hospital has been Rani Mukerji, who sits there quietly and just calms her down, and keeps her spirits up. With the good cheer that Juhi has spread around, we’re sure better times will come soon. Till then, let us all keep our chin up and pray for the Chawlas.

Vidya-Rani starrer gets new name
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 24, 2010]

Based on the infamous Jessica Lall murder case, ‘No One Killed Jessica’ brings two of the versatile actresses Rani Mukherji and Vidya Balan together on one screen. While Rani Mukherji plays the role of a journo, Vidya dons the character of Jessica’s sister Sabrina Lall who strongly fought for justice.

The film is currently being shot in Delhi. Director Rajkumar Gupta who is keen to give the film a realistic look, is shooting in the backdrops of real locations like hospitals and trauma centre, instead of using sets. The film has five songs, out of which four are already said to have been composed, by Amit Trivedi.

Of late our birdies have brought in this buzz that the film has been renamed as ‘System’.

However, the confirmation is yet to come from the director.

Rani Vidya - Good Terms?

Bollywood beauty Vidya Balan has lately been very busy with her hectic schedule for Rajkumar Gupta's No One Killed Jessica, for which she's currently shooting outdoors, on the streets of Delhi.

Earlier BollyCurry informed you about the cold vibes going on between Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan. However, things seem to have taken a major turn!

When asked about her relationship with Rani, Vidya declared that she is really enjoying the shooting and happy to be sharing camera screen with her. She further disclosed that Rani has been her favourite actress from the senior generation and is looking forward to shooting the rest of the film with her.

May be that's what the glamour world is all about, full of highs and lows and total unpredictability! All we can wish is that the two tentative friends find some much deserved and needed success at the Box Office!

No One Killed Jessica’ to be changed to ‘System’?

Updated on Saturday, April 24, 2010, 21:03 IST Spicezee Bureau

Mumbai: If the latest buzz is to be believed, filmmaker Rajkumar Gupta is planning to rename the much-awaited Vidya Balan-Rani Mukerji starrer ‘No One Killed Jessica’.

According to reports, ever since the Supreme Court passed a judgment upholding Manu Sharma’s life-term in the Jessica Lall murder case, rumours have been rife about whether Gupta will re-title the flick or would choose to stick to the original title.

An industry insider revealed to a news daily that Gupta has already come up with a new title for the film. “Yes, the title has been changed. The new title of the film is ‘System’,” reveals the source.

While, the director remained unavailable for commenting on the news, Amit Trivedi, who will be composing five songs in the film, says, “I’ve already composed four tracks for the film. They will be experimental. However, I’m not aware of the change in the title.”

Jogaiah to kick off on July 12
May 4th, 2010 - 8:27 pm ICT by Sampurn Wire -

May 4, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Shivarajakumar’s 100th film, Jogaiah, with hat trick director Prem is set to reveal the face of politics of the past and present in Karnataka which had strong links to the underworld. Both Prem and Shivarajakumar seem to have a soft spot for the subject of the underworld.

Puneeth Rajakumar, Shivarajakumar’s younger brother had a recent release, Prithvi, which was about the politics regarding the mining activities in Bellary district of Karnataka.

Shivarajakumar has earlier done films on the underworld, like his movie Om (1995), which was directed by Upendra. Prem’s connection to the underworld subject is from his film Kariya in 2002. Finally the duo came together in Jogi.

This time, in Jogaiah, which is produced jointly by Prem and his wife, actress Rakshita, will be looking at the politics of the past that was responsible in giving scope for the underworld. A number of real-life politicians will star in the movie as the film has quite a few politician characters. A lot of underworld dons were brought on screen by director Prem in Kariya, which starred Darshan.

Jogaiah, which was supposed to go on floors on Dr. Rajakumar’s birth anniversary on April 24, is now set to rolling July 12, the birthday of superstar Shivarajakumar.

The film may have four heroines. Prem is in plans to cast Rani Mukherjee and Tamanna.

Rani is a Odissi dancer
May 8, 2010 at 7:16 am | In Uncategorized

Bollywood super star Rani Mukherjee has learnt classical Odissi dance. She has perfection in Odissi dancing; Rani said that she has learnt Odissi from Guru Ravundra Athibudhi. But, unfortunately, from past three year Rani is not able to practice her dance because of her tight shooting schedule. Rani is not able to take out time for her talent.

When Rani was invited to perform in Haridas Sammelan in Mathura, she denied for the performance because of lack of rehearsal. She said this very prestigious show, she cannot take it lightly, and before any performance, rehearsal is very necessary. And specially for classical dance.

In that shoe other legendary of dance and music participated Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma.

Inspiration time
TNN, May 10, 2010, 12.00am IST

There’s huge excitement about director Raj Kumar Gupta’s No One killed Jessica that is bringing together Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan.

An insider says that besides the very obvious display of histrionics between these diminutive actresses, what this film has going for it, is it’s very taut screenplay. A director adds, “No One Killed Jessica reportedly has the same pace and thrill that is there in Vikas Swarup’s (yeah, the Slumdog Millionaire author) book Six Suspects.

Was the book an inspiration for the film No One Killed Jessica? No one knows, and no one is saying that. But it is too early for anyone to start saying anything right now. Allegations (if any?) will always come closer to release time

Cut Above The Rest 3/3

Meet the stars who promise to deliver. The stars who will relentlessly bewitch you with their supernova allure in 2010. Sukanya Venkatraghavan makes a wishlist

Rani Mukerji

Lying low is sometimes a good thing. And Rani Mukerji has been doing just that. After Dil Bole Hadippa! failed to score a sixer at the box office, she turned all her attention to No One Killed Jessica, her first film outside the Yash Raj banner in years. Rani promises to return with a vengeance armed with newly sharpened acting chops in this dark niche film. Now that would be something.

Filmfare crystal ball predicts: We are not sure if Rani’s career will rocket after this but the film will definitely put her back on the map, where she belongs.
