Premiere already happened..

==========================

Bollywood masala creates history in Toronto
Toronto, Sep 13 (PTI):

Hindi film 'Dil Bole Hadippa' has created history at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) by becoming the first-ever full-on Bollywood masala film to have its world premiere in North America's top cinema event.

Directed by debutante filmmaker Anurag Singh, 'Dil Bole Hadippa' produced by childhood pal Adiyta Chopra, the film stars actors Rani Mukherjee and Shahid Kapoor in lead.
"I cannot express how delighted I am," Anurag said in an interview.

"I am aware of the prestige associated with this festival," said the young director.
TIFF has in the past screened Karan Johar's 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' (2006) and Anees Bazmee's 'Singh is Kinng' (2008) but neither was a world premiere because the two films had arrived in Toronto after their worldwide commercial release.

'Dil Bole Hadippa' has had its first public screening at a Gala red carpet event at the Roy Thomson Hall a full five days ahead of its opening. The lead actress of the film, Rani Mukherjee, who was also in Toronto, attended the premiere before flying back to India for a promotional tour in the run-up to the film's domestic release.

"I had Rani in mind for the role of Veera from day one and wanted to pair her with an actor she hadn't been paired with before. Shahid Kapur's name got pencilled in somewhere along the way," said Anurag.

His roots are in the film industry. His father, K P Singh, produced films like 'Patthar Aur Payal' and 'Warrant' in the 1970s. "I grew up on film sets,"said the director, who counts Hrithik Roshan among his earliest friends. Anurag began his professional life in his teens as an assistant to Rakesh Roshan on as many as five films.

Besides producing two films of his own, Kundan Shah's 'Hum To Mohabbat Karega' and Vikram Bhatt's 'Zurm', the young man went on to assist Sanjay Gadhvi on the production of 'Dhoom 2'. "Yash Raj Films is like home to me," he said.

Anurag revealed that cricket is only a backdrop in 'Dil Bole Hadippa' and is completely different from other Bollywood movies with a similar background. "It is unlike Lagaan, Chak De India or Iqbal. It isn't really about sport. It's a romantic comedy which focuses on the relationship between the hero and the heroine although the game of cricket does play a part in the narrative.

"It's an out-and-out masala film for the whole family. What's special about Hadippa is that it is set entirely in rural Punjab. You won't see a single skyscraper in the film," he added.

The Queen Bee’s YRF Avatars

She has been called the resident Yash Raj Films heroine and the relationship has been mutually beneficial to a certain extent. She is a brilliant actress, no doubt who has unmatched chemistry with all her heroes, be it Saif or Abhishek or Hrithik. She has brought to life challenging and versatile characters and her star power has contributed immensely to the success of the YRF films.

Yash Raj’s Rani has done pretty versatile roles with the production house. From an unrequited-love-struck girl in Mujhse Dosti Karoge to a streetwalker in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and a plump angel in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, her roles transverse a gamut of emotions. We take a look at all her diverse YRF avatars.

Janhvi Patel/Hill Road Media

Dil Bole Hadippa

In DBH, her 9th Yash Raj film, Rani plays Veera, a vivacious village belle (reminiscent of Geet from Jab We Met) who disguises herself as Veer, a cricketer and she is quite the bikini clad hottie in the remix video of the title track. She also wowed us with her dancing prowess, matching twinkle-toed Shahid Kapur step for step. It is delightful to see a slim Rani scorch the silver screen after so long. And from what we see, reliable Rani has done a good job in the film and doesn’t look ancient in front of baby-faced Shahid. Surprisingly, both of them who are small in stature look good together. Rani is going all out, flaunting her bod and promoting the film. For Shahid and her sake, we hope the film strikes gold at the BO.

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic

TPTM is the only Kunal Kohli flick that got fairly good reviews (most critics gave it 3 stars) and yet didn’t do well at the BO. Saif and Rani supported the film on their able shoulders and the children acted well too but the movie, revolving around children, didn’t get any love from audiences. Rani was criticized for her weight gain and boring nanny outfit. The music wasn’t magical either.

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag

LCMD had an impressive cast of actors and a promising director. Hopes were high with Parineeta’s Pradeep Sarkar at the helm of affairs. Sadly, the movie had the most regressive and pathetic storyline and dialogues in recent times which didn’t strike a chord with modern audiences. As Chutki, a small town girl who doesn’t lose her innocence even when she turns an escort-cum-hooker to support her family, she looked lovely and sensual in the film. Her natural performance, complemented by that of brilliant fellow Bong Konkona, was the high point of the film but it wasn’t enough to pull people to see the outdated movie.

Ta Ra Rum Pum

TRRP wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be. It was India’s first film on car racing. Saif looked smashing. Rani, as Radhika Rai Bannerjee, a young romantic girl turned supportive wife and mother, looked like a girl-next-door and shared sparkling chemistry with Saif. The songs, Ab Toh Forever and Hey Shona were huge. The kids were adorable. The movie also had a message that said complete your graduation and save for a rainy day. Unfortunately, people don’t go to a theatre to learn lessons. They only want to be entertained. Somehow, majority audiences weren’t entertained and the movie did very average business.

Bunty Aur Babli

BAB worked primarily cashed in on its summer vacation release and super-hit music. In the mad, mindless film, Rani shared some crackling chemistry with Bachchan Junior and the two were rumoured to be an item at the time. Kajraa Re was a phenomenon. People flocked to see Rani sharing screen space with the two Bachchans. Clad in Aki Narula’s colourful costumes, Rani played Babli, the mischievous small town girl who wanted to be the next Naomi Campbell to the hilt and made her very entertaining and likeable.

Veer Zaara

She didn’t have a leading role in the film but Rani, as Samiya Siddiqui, the Pakistani lawyer who fights Veer’s case, made such an impact with her stellar performance that people talked about her more than SRK or Preity when they walked out of cinemas after seeing the film. For people who didn’t like the film, Rani was the only saving grace.

Hum Tum

It was the way Rani and Saif brought their as-different-as-chalk-and-cheese characters to life and their believable chemistry with love brimming just under the surface that made Hum Tum the entertaining hit film that it is. Everyone related to the film and the characters. Rani’s portrayal of Rhea, your typical sensible girl from the age of 18 through 28 was as natural as you can get. Saif and Rani looked great together in their first film.

Saathiya

Rani was going through a low phase in her career and Saathiya was her only film on hand. Luckily for her, it worked and how. People couldn’t stop raving about her smokin’ chemistry with Vivek and the two were romantically linked as well. Rahman’s score, including the title track, Udi Udi and Humdum Suniyo Re was magical. Rani threw herself into the role of Suhani, a young love-struck girl and strong-willed yet loving wife. Rani had arrived, yet again.

Mujhse Dosti Karoge

Kunal Kohli’s directorial debut is a classic case of while the hottie is showered by male attention; the girl next door is the one who eventually gets the guy. Rani obviously played Pooja the demure girl next door and stole the show from Kareena who went over the top by playing the ebullient beauty that every guy adored. Hrithik was a tad annoying too. The movie was spectacularly silly and thus it flopped.

Bollywood to promote Indian culture around the world: Rani

Updated on Sunday, September 13, 2009, 14:07 IST

Toronto: Actress Rani Mukherjee, who is here to promote her upcoming movie `Dil Bole Hadippa` at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), believes that Bollywood can play a key role in promoting Indian culture and heritage around the world.

"Besides entertainment, Bollywood can be a powerful medium in educating millions of people of Indian origin and others about Indian culture and heritage and strengthening global connections," she said.

The actress, who is back on silver screen after a gap of one year, set aside the rumours of her marriage and said her mother is a continuous inspiration to do films. "My mother inspired me to go the films, otherwise I would have been now mother of two children," she said on the eve of the World Premiere of her movie.

Rani, who played the role of a cricketer guised as a man in `Dil Bole Hadippa`, said she worked hard for six months to learn cricket before she could play it on screen. The actress, whose favourite cricketer is Sachin Tendulkar, advocated that
more and more women should learn the game.

The 31 year old actress said while Hindi films have earlier featured at the Toronto International Film Festival, this is the first time world premiere of films taking place.

Last year`s surprise hit of the festival, Slumdog Millionaire, went on to become a huge international success and clinched the Academy Awards. The festival, one of world`s most vibrant celebrations of the art and cinema, would showcase two big-banner Bollywood films this year. Among them are Indo-US co-production, regional features and a Diaspora entry.

Ashutosh Gowariker`s `What`s Your Raashee?`, starring Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra would world premiere during the festival.

"The idea is to bring the full diversity of Indian cinema to audiences in Toronto. People here are familiar with India`s regional cinema but commercial Hindi films haven`t had the sort of exposure that they deserve. They are an integral part of the Indian cinema landscape, " TIFF co-director and India programmer Cameron Bailey said.

Director Dev Benegal and actor Abhay Deol will be in Toronto, along with actor-filmmaker Satish Kaushik and actress Tannishtha Chatterjee, to attend the world premiere of `Road, Movie`, an Indo-US joint venture produced by Studio 18-promoted Indian Film Company and Hollywood`s Susan Landau and Ross Katz.

TIFF will also witness the world premiere of Delhi-born photojournalist-turned-filmmaker Dilip Mehta`s first feature,
`Cooking with Stella`, co-scripted by sister Deepa Mehta. The
film is a Canadian entry, but was shot entirely in New Delhi
with a largely Indian cast.

Girly cricket on cinema

A girl’s dream to be a cricketer is the main theme of the latest Bollywood movie ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ (Heart Goes Hurrah) which is to be release in the Majestic cinema, Colombo on September 18 to coincide with worldwide release.

The latest of Yashraj Films has also been selected to be screened at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival which has now been underway and the film is slated to be screened today, September 13.

Starring Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee in the lead roles, the film is another cinematic creation like ‘Lagaan’ or ‘Iqbal’ which forms the backdrop for the movie.

Directed by Anurag Singh and produced by Aditya Chopra, the other characters are played by Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil, Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn Chopra.

The film tells the story of Veera (Rani Mukerji), a fire-cracker of a girl who lives in a small village but dreams of playing cricket in the big league. Rohan (Shahid Kapoor) is an accomplished captain of a county cricket team in England. Rohan returns to India to captain his father’s cricket team which has been losing consecutively for the last 8 years.

In a village where girls don’t play cricket, Veera has to put on a turban and beard and become a man to fulfil her dreams. Her brilliance on the field earns her a place in Rohan’s team and Veera Kaur becomes Veer Pratap Singh.

I am over the moon: ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ director

September 13th, 2009 - 5:03 pm ICT by IANS - By Gurmukh Singh

Toronto, Sep 13 (IANS) “Dil Bole Hadippa”, which stars Shahid Kapur and Rani Mukerji, became the first Bollywood film to premiere at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) before its release in India. And debutant director Anurag Singh just can’t contain his excitement.

“I am over the moon at this privilege given to ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ to be the first-ever Bollywood film to be premiered at the Toronto festival before its release in India,” Anurag, son of producer K.P. Singh, told IANS here.

“It is a family entertainment masala which will appeal to anyone. Its rip-roaring music will be a hit, I guess,” he said.

Set wholly in rural Punjab, the Yash Raj Films production also stars Sherlyn Chopra, Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil and Rakhi Sawant. Singh said they chose the Punjabi-sounding title and Punjab for the shooting because of the north Indian state’s cultural vibrancy and its global appeal.

“Another unique thing about this film-cum-comedy is that there is no trace of any city or skyscrapers in it. We did all our shooting in villages outside Chandigarh, Ludhiana, and Amritsar over 80 days,” he said.

Asked why he chose Rani and Shahid for the lead role, he said: “I wanted to bring in a pair which had never worked together before. There is some sort of freshness about Rani and Shahid working together. There was instant chemistry between the two. For Shahid, it is an entirely different role after ‘Kaminey’.”

Singh, who has assisted Rakesh Roshan in five films, said he was asked to direct “Dil Bole Hadippa” by Aditya Chopra, his childhood friend. And it was while writing the script that Singh visualised Rani and Shahid as the lead pair.

“When Aditya and I were working on the script, we had only Rani and Shahid in mind. The two agreed to the role the moment we sat with them with the script,” Singh said.

“Aditya, Hrithik Roshan and I grew up together. In fact, Aditya and I watched every single movie every Friday for 20 years. So doing ‘Dil Bole…’ is kind of a home production for me. And it was Hrithik who asked me to work with his dad. I have learnt my art from Rakesh Roshan,” he said.

The film is set for release in India and 20-odd countries Sep 18.

Singh, who has a three-film contract with Yash Raj Films, said he looked forward to a break before starting on his next venture.

“I will take a month’s break and then think about the next film,” said the director who also co-produced films like “Hum To Mohabbat Karega” and “Jurm”.

“What’s your Rashee?” is another Bollywood film being premiered next week at the festival that is on till Sep 19.

DBH movie review at Bollywhat:

YES!!! And it's AWESOME!!!!

Let's just say it's the kind of movie that makes you want to strut when you come out

The crowd seemed to like it, but I don't think many were familiar with the previews, because they started clapping as soon as it was over: clearly they didn't know Hadippa Remix was coming

They actually DIDN'T put all the good jokes in the trailers, there are plenty more, in fact the best ones are the ones that I hadn't seen yet. And I lost track of all the references to previous Shahid, Rani, YR movies, it was really nice to catch them Especially Shahid's. And what's even better, the crowd seemed to know a lot of them too, about half the people were laughing knowingly whenever he would say something that was a clear reference to a previous film. And of course, the crowd went wild when they did a little rendition of a bit from DDLJ

Overall, I found the dialogue hilarious and for once the mix between Hindi and English is funny on purpose

A final word of warning before I move to the spoiler's thread... anybody that is a fan of Ik Onkar in RDB, prepare to have this song ruined for you And the first time you hear it in the movie, that's the best - it only gets worse after It's just so badly used. Or maybe I am used to the majestic somber way that it is played in RDB and can't stomach seeing it almost ridiculed, whichever, you've been warned...

Either way: don't miss this movie: if you're excited by the previews, you'll love it! The previews don't even do it justice. Sure there are some tear jerking (yawn) moments, but I didn't mind them. Can't wait to see it again Friday and dragging all my girlfriends!!!

Fluff... fluff... I see clouds of fluff all around me

OMG! IM SO EXCITED! I just read that review on SO.net, and the same user posted spoilers, too. Here is her SPOILER section:

The one major issue I had with the characters, was why claim that Rohan is from England and make him talk like an American frat-boy??? I mean, I thought the way he talked was fun, and I'm cool with it, but it's so not British it's not even funny... Why not say that he was from the States and then everything would fit?

I was amused by all the references to KiKo, JWM, Dhoom 2 (LOL at Soniya or whatever her name was talking about herself in third person - too funny!), loved Rakhi dancing to Kajra Re and Crazy Kiya Re, and all the other million ways in which other movies were referenced. And it's not done in an obnoxious way that would make it less fun for people that haven't seen these movies. I was laughing a lot, in fact an hour later, my giant grin has yet to be wiped off my face

And because I was one of the non-believers: I take back everything I ever said about Shahid not having chemistry with Rani - I would love to see this jodi again, thought they gelled together beautifully! And chemistry - oh yeah! Plenty!! Ishq Hi Hai Rab is particularly delicious in terms of chemistry.

One more thing that I liked, I can't really get off my cloud to do a proper review now, but the resolution was pretty well done too, IMO. I liked that there was no imploring for forgiveness, there were no lame speeches: they made up without words. That was a nice change to all the long drawn resolution scenes they usually come up with before one character forgives the other.

I will refrain from starting a review about Shahid's performance, because I can't do that without squeeing: suffice to say he carries the role beautifully, and I believed when he was happy, I believed when he was angry, I believed when he was hurt and there's this fierceness about his acting lately that I am hopelessly in love with... The scene in the men's washroom after he finds out about Veera and she comes to talk to him: gah! Whimper... Ok, I'll stop now before this review gets out of hand...

Rani’s purple magic at the Toronto International Film Festival 2009
By Guneet Wadera, 13 September, 2009
She came, she shone and she mesmerized!

The red carpet for the World Premiere of Yash Raj Films, Dil Bole Hadippa was glitz and glamour central on the early afternoon of September 13th as fans thronged in huge numbers to the Roy Thompson Hall to catch a glimpse of the Queen of Hearts-Rani Mukherjee.

Rani looked dazzling in a majestic purple gown accessorized by Franco Ferrara, with her hair tied half-up. The red of the carpet paled in comparison to the gorgeousness of the actress.

Keeping in with the Punjabi flavour of the film, the festivities commenced with an energetic and enthusiastic live performance by Bhangra troop and Dhol player.

Rani graciously signed autographs aplenty and snapped pictures abound with fans who had been patiently waiting all morning. Rani was accompanied by the debutant Director, Anurag Singh who has worked as an associate producer for Yash Raj Film and turns to direction with Dil Bole Hadippa being his maiden venture.

Filmicafe.com was right there to capture all the magic and brings you the exclusive coverage from the Roy Thompson Hall.

Two reviews from the facebook group:

The average one:

Just saw the full. It is so so.. Rani is good as Veer while Shahid is okay as Rohan. Nothing to rave aobut..The film will please their fans. I doubt if the public will like it. It had the potential to be a comedy but the director messed it up. The best scenes are between Rohan and Veer. Apart from few scenes, the movie is very average. Plus points, Rani and Shahid Chemistry, music and dance. Boring climax. Rani all dolled up in makeup after playing cricket..

The movie is only good in few parts. All you fans will luv the pair..They do look good and they are some really funny parts in the movie. But overall, movie doesnt have the mass appeal to make it a big hit. It is an average film with top stars.I just wished the director would have made it a complete comedy and had more scenes of Rohan and Veer and explored the the love triangle between Rohan, (Veer, Veera) and Shanno with a No Entry kind of climax as opposed to serious cricket business. The climax is long and boring and ruins the early charm of the movie. The climax changes from a plain ground field to a stadium overnight and tries to be something big as opposed to a small matchup. It is still entertaining and it does not drag until we get into the climax. But not sure about the boxoffice prospect. For your sake, lets hope it goes the way Singh is Kinng and Welcome way.

The good one:

I just came from the TIFF premiere and I thought the movie was great!!.. Rani and Shahid were awesome and it was so cool to see Rani in person!

Rani’s ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ premier in Toronto

Indian moviegoers in Canada's commercial capital went "Hadippa" over Rani Mukherjee as the curtains went up on Bollywood star's latest movie at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) here.

They turned out in full strength and filled up the cavernous Roy Thomson Hall in downtown Toronto auditorium to the rafters for the world premiere.

The red carpet was flanked by shrieking and howling Rani fans, who thrust their autograph books at Rani and posed for photographs with the actress even as a posse of bhangra dancers in colourful attire swayed to drum beats.

"I really love the audience in Toronto. It's so involved," Rani said.

"I'm nervous, I'm excited and I'm extremely honoured to be here. I have a deep emotional connect with my fans. They have stood by me through my low phase. I owe a lot to them. I hope they enjoy Dil Bole Hadippa as much as we enjoyed making it," said the 31-year-old actress, who is returning to the big screen after a year.

'Dil Bole Hadippa' is first full-on Bollywood masala film to have its world premiere in North America's top cinema events.

Cameron Bailey, co-director, Toronto International Film Festival, explained why he chose 'Dil Bole Hadippa' for a Gala presentation here, "We love the colour, the energy, the music and the spirit of Bollywood and Dil Bole Hadippa captures all that to perfection."

"You are the very first audience of this film," Bailey told the thunderous audience.

Rani got into the swing of things and let out shrill whoop of joy in unison with the audience. She said she was confident that the film would have a special appeal for audiences here because it is set entirely in Punjab.

"Punjabis have a strong presence in Toronto. I am sure they will relate to Dil Bole Hadippa quite easily," the actress said.

The film's director, debutant Anurag Singh, said: "Dil Bole Hadippa reflects what we Indians are like. We are colourful, loud, noisy and all heart."

Rani Mukherji steals the show at Toronto film festival
September 14, 2009 10:08 IST

Rani Mukherji walked the red carpet just the way George Clooney and other Hollywood celebrities had done in recent days. But her entrance was far more spectacular than Clooney's.

Rani was at the gala for Dil Bole Hadippa [ Images ] that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Sunday. She was accompanied by over a dozen Punjabi Bhangra dancers.

Rani, wearing a gown, walked past over 300 fans. However, not everyone was pleased with her choice of gown. "Rani looks good in anything she wears," said Mary Allen a caucasian journalist who was wearing a sari. "I wore a sari for everytime I've seen Rani, in a movie, wearing a sari, I thought how gorgeous Indian women look wearing a sari."

Many fans waved signs that read, "Our Dil Bole Hadippa," "We love you Rani" and "Hadippa Forever."

Some fans had come expecting Shahid Kapoor [ Images ] for the event; but director Anurag Singh who also walked the red carpet said that Shahid was doing publicity for the film in India.

"Rani is so committed to this project that she flew into Toronto from London [ Images ], although she could give only a day and a half of her time." She left for London a few hours after the premiere.

"Toronto, I have heard, is a city full of people who love all kinds of movies," Rani said. "Yet our film is a masala, commercial film. And to be featured in as a gala event is a very big honour."

Out of the 21 gala movies, there are three from India. This is the first time so many Indian films have been featured in the gala. Apart from Dil Bole Hadippa, there are Cooking With Stella, produced by Toronto based Deepa Mehta and India's Ravi Chopra (BR Films) and What's Your Raashee?, is the concluding gala film of the festival.

"We are holding the premiere of the movie in Toronto even before it opens in India," director Singh said. "The film opens across the world this Friday. We knew we had made a very good masala film but we had no idea it could go to a major film festival."

Though Yash Raj Pictures' Kabul Express [ Images ] was shown at TIFF two years ago, it was not a gala event.

"Everyone at Yash Raj is excited that Dil Bole Hadippa is a gala event. When Cameron Bailey, co-director, TIFF, saw the film and invited and told us that it should be shown at the festival we were over-excited. Our confidence in the film became even stronger than ever before. Shahid and Rani are absolutely thrilled with this film. If Rani had more time, she would have stayed back in Toronto, meeting many of her fans."

In the past five years, TIFF has started showing extravaganzas like Bollywood movies along with austere arthouse fare. Given the fact Toronto has over 350,000 Bollywood fans, from India to Afghanistan, Dubai [ Images ] to Ethiopia, and Morocco to Russia [ Images ], Indian stars at the festival are a big draw in the city.

A Nigerian cab driver, in Toronto, who waited 2 hours to get a glimpse of Rani said, "We see Indian stars many times in a year but they are busy shooting. They hardly look around them and smile because they are busy with their work. At the gala event, everyone dresses beautifully and everyone smiles. And when Rani smiles, I feel I'm in heaven."
