Who the bloody hell is Rani Mukherjee?

She swept into the room dressed like an Indian princess – if there was such a thing - in a sheer apricot sari and sparkling earrings that brushed her shoulders.
The seated crowd suddenly stood as if they were greeting a bride walking down the aisle and were heard to whisper in unison: “Ohhhhhh”.
But not this journalist. No, I was too busy juggling a notepad, pen, camera and dictaphone at the same time. I hurriedly stood, trying not to empty the contents of my lap onto the floor in front of Indian royalty.
This, it seems, is how Bollywood star Rani Mukherjee is regarded.

In true diva style, the revered Queen of Bollywood arrived fashionably late to a press conference this week and lapped up the adoring media attention, at least from those that knew who she was.
I’m no Bollywood aficionado but this week I’ve had a crash course in Indian cinema.
The Indian Film Festival: Bollywood and Beyond, opened in Melbourne this week (March 10) and I was front row at the media launch, faced with a bunch of people I’d never heard of.
It was great theatre. Some of the local media fell over themselves, prefacing questions with a gushing ode to Rani. (‘My daughter really loves you, she is a big fan, so I’d just like to say hello from her’, one reporter said.)
Rani has acted in about 41 films since 1997, according to the Internet Film and Movie Database. This year’s Indian Film Festival featured a retrospective of her movies - not bad for a 32-year-old.
Despite her starlet tendencies, it’s hard not to be captivated by the aura of Rani.
She’s just so sparkly.
Her eyes twinkle, her saris shine and her jewellery glitters.
She was also incredibly endearing. “You are very cute,” she said to one female reporter asking her a question (not me).
And rather than wanting to hurry away, diva-esque, Rani seemed keen to kick back and stay awhile.
“Ask me anything about any star and I will give you all the details,” she replied to a reporter who asked her to dish the goss on a male Bollywood co-star. Not something you’d hear a Hollywood star offering.
And when last questions were called for, she said: “Oh really? That is so sad.”
Before this week, my experience of Indian cinema was confined to Slumdog Millionaire, which was made by a British team.
Here’s what I know now: Rani Mukherjee is apparently considered the Julia Roberts of Bollywood and a director called Rajkumar Hirani has made one of the most successful Bollywood films of all time, 3 Idiots.
I’m so intrigued I even dragged my beloved along to Melbourne’s Federation Square to watch a free screening of Main Aur Mrs Khanna, which was filmed in this city.
And all because of Rani.

Foes or friends?

Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan have started shooting for Raj Kumar Gupta’s No One Killed Jessica. Nobody in Btown believed that the two would do a movie together till the Aamir director actually said: “Action!” Why? Well, Vidya had supposedly tur ned down Konkona’s role in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag because Rani was the star of the film.

Rani herself has never sounded very friendly about Vidya either. During her Calcutta trip to promote Dil Bole Hadippa!, she said: “Shahid was very concerned about whether he would look younger than his heroine after his experience in the last film.” That’s Kismat Konnection and the target of Rani’s bitching was obviously Vidya.

We at t2 decided to set the record straight by directly asking Vidya whether she has any problem with Rani. After all she is the junior star.

“Rani happens to be one of my favourite actresses,” Vidya made it clear at the very outset. “I am so excited that No One Killed Jessica will feature Rani and me together for the first time.”

Then why did she say ‘no’ to her Parineeta director Pradeep Sarkar’s Laaga Chunari...? “I know everyone thinks it’s because Rani was there but actually I couldn’t do Dada’s film since I had already committed to Heyy Babyy. The Australia schedule was already made and I couldn’t go back on my word. I think there is a time for everything and we are finally doing No One Killed Jessica (together).”

There’s also the buzz that Rani and Vidya would come together again in Deepa Mehta’s adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children. “No, I am not doing that film as of now,” says Vidya. She does admit that she met Deepa Mehta but it wasn’t about that film.

So, at the moment we have to be happy with just one Rani-Vidya combo offer.

No more catfights for B-town!
HARSHADA REGE , TNN, Mar 19, 2010, 12.00am IST

Catfights are the norm in Bollywood. In fact when two actresses are cast together for a project, most gossip mongers start sniffing the air for any juicy stories of fights between them.

And till date Bollywood actresses have provided much fodder for the gossip mills to churn out some spicy tales. Be it Bipasha Basu’s fight with Kareeena Kapoor during the making of Ajnabi or more recently the alleged fight between Asin and Jiah Khan during the making of the Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini. This despite the fact that the actresses don’t come together in a single frame throughout the movie. Though of course Asin and Jiah denied the runmours. In fact Asin even claimed that they got along like a house on fire.

Most often actresses are either branded as bum-chums ala Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji during the beginning of their career or then they have to be at each other’s throats.
Maybe actresses today have become more secure about their choices, but the nagging worry of the other actress getting a better deal and walking away with all the accolades is always a thought.

But today things seem to be changing. Despite so many multistarrers being made, the number of catfights seem to be fewer. So, have tha cats mellowed down? Or is it just that women in the industry have become more confident of what they want? Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Arora for example are friends who have worked together in movies like Golmaal Returns and Kambakkht Ishq and have yet managed to remain best of buddies. Similarly, we now hear that Vidya Balan and the reclusive Rani are getting along pretty well while shooting for Who Killed Jessica Lal? Vidya Balan has in fact gone on to praise Rani and called her “a doll”.

Asin too had denied the claim of catfight with Jiah and said, “We hardly shared any screen space and whenever we interacted we got along really well.” Sagarika ghatge who during the making of Fox was rumoured to have trouble seeing face-to-face with her co-star denied it vehemently. She says, “I am a non-filmi person. I can’t pretend to be friends with someone.” And now actresses seem to be getting along even well. Deepika Padukone and Lara Dutta who will be seen showing off their long legs in Houseful got along like a house on fire on. “Lara and I are Bangalore girls, so the camaraderie was there from day one,” said Deepika. “Yes,” agreed Lara, “we come from similar backgrounds. Deepika, like me, was a model from Bangalore.” Looks like this ‘model’ behaviour seems to be suiting Bollywood just fine.

No One Killed Jessica (2010) Hindi Movie - Vidya Balan-Rani Mukherjee in Jessica Lal Murder Case

By cinelover on 16 March 2010

Murder of Jessica Lall

Image via Wikipedia

Mar 16, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio) Many people vividly remember the high-profile crime and subsequent trial for the 1999 murder of the stunningly beautiful Jessica Lall - a model from Delhi - who was shot dead while serving drinks in a high-society party. The trigger was pulled openly in front of many witnesses by Manu Sharma, son of powerful and wealthy Haryana politician Vinod Sharma. In a stunning setback to the prosecution and a decision that dumbfounded Indians, raising questions of the extent of corruption caused by money and power-politics, Manu Sharma was declared innocent by a court in 2006.

Under relentless pressure and mounting criticism, the case was taken by the prosecution to the higher-level Delhi High Court. Remarkably, the High Court found the judgement of the lower court untenable, and also found Manu Sharma guilty as charged of murdering Jessica Lall. Manu Sharma is subsequently serving life.

At 2 AM in the fateful night, a thoroughly drunk Manu Sharma asked Jessica for another drink, and also offered a thousand bucks for her more personal services. Jessica refused both, and in the style of Danny DeVitto in The Goodfellas, Manu shot Jessica.

Watch Bollywood films to know Indians: Rani
IANS

Indian films are all about our culture, traditions, human relations and all about heart, says Rani Mukherjee

Cinema can go a long way in promoting positive bilateral relations between Australia and India, especially Bollywood films as they are “all about heart”, said Rani Mukherjee, who was here as chief guest at the 2010 Indian Film Festival — Bollywood and Beyond.

“Cinema showcases different cultures and Indian films are all about our culture, our traditions, human relations and all about heart. So when Australians watch Indian films, they will get to know Indians better and that will help in knowing each other better,” Rani told IANS in an exclusive interview.

So will she act in a film on racism? “As an actor, I would be part of any film that inspires me as an artist. If there is a great character for me to play, if I feel there is something interesting in the film about racism and if there is a positive outlook towards changing the mindset, I would hundred percent do it.”

She would like to do diverse, challenging roles. So does she feel socially responsible while doing a movie?

Giving the example of her role as a deaf, dumb and blind girl in “Black”, she said, “I do expect that people who do not know about the deaf and blind get more aware of people like them. You should never pity them because they are such spirited, lively, fun people and there is so much to learn from them.

“Michelle McNally did graduate despite her handicap. The sheer fact that if you have the passion, nothing is impossible in life. That is what my character in ‘Black’ and the film taught me and that is what I would like to portray to the hundreds and millions of my fans who watch the movie”.

The festival, which opened with “Black” and “Dil Bole Hadippa” in Sydney, is screening a retrospective of Rani’s distinctive films alongside recent Bollywood hits, some regional cinema gems and documentaries.

For Rani, every role is a dream role, but the role that debutant director Anurag Singh gave her in “Dil Bole Hadippa” was “wonderful”.

“It is wonderful being a man and to feel like a man and get attracted to beautiful women. It was a dream role because I could never imagine in my life that I would cross dress as a man. I also got to experiment with cricket, a sport I had never played in my life. I trained for eight months and fell in love with the game. And, of course, being a man and tying your hair up in a turban was the most relaxing part!“

Being a Bengali, was it difficult for her to play the role of a Sardar?

“Punjabis and Bengalis make a great combination; even marriages between them are lovely,” said Rani, relating an interesting episode about how she was exchanged with a Punjabi baby at the hospital and her mother had to fight to get her back.

“I still have to crack the code whether I am a Sardar or Bengali,” she said.

Rani also revealed that if she weren’t an actress, she would have been “a housewife with my sari tucked in my waist, making chapattis for my husband, raising two kids probably in Allahabad or Kolkata or somewhere where my parents would have married me off!“

So is she ready to direct films after a career spanning 17 years as an actress?

Rani was forthcoming: “I would like to do a lot of things in life, but you never get to do everything that you want to do. When an actor probably completes 10 years, you are often asked would you like to direct or write?

“I didn’t want to become an actress, but I became one and so I have this thing in my head that ‘Never say never’ It is not something I have planned, but if I do get an opportunity and have this energy rush in my body to take up the responsibility of a director some day, I would definitely love to direct.”

Asked if she dreams about winning an Oscar, the multi—award winning actress said: “I would dream about everything and as an actor our greed never stops for awards, recognition, fame, and love and warmth from people; so it is a never ending process for an actor.”

The actress, who chooses her roles with care and takes what inspires and excites her, is looking forward to “No one killed Jessica”, a film based on the murder of Delhi model Jessica Lall in which she plays the journalist.

“It is a very different film that I am doing after a long time. It is a very different and powerful role; so I don’t know how my fans are going to react to it, but I am looking forward to it because it is an interesting movie based on a true life story.”

I don't know my true identity whether I am a Sardar or Bengali: Rani Mukherjee

Shafeen Mustaq

As Rani Mukherjee swept into Sydney for opening up Sydney's Indian Film Festival for 2010, I met with her at a press conference held at the Siebel and put to her a few questions her fans were curious to know. I don't quite know what I was expecting, but what I wasn't expecting was a bubbly, talkative congenial Rani that walked into the room and answered every question put to her with perfect alacrity and charm.

When did you start acting?
I started acting at the age of 17. Before that I was at school, being scolded by baba (dad) and ma (mum), not baba, ma! I used to go on the school bus to school and come back. I was born in Kolkata. You know my first film was Raja ki Ayegi Baraat not biyer phool. I shot for Raja ki ayegi Baraat first and then my father's film biyer phool but they released on the same day, 18th October 1996.

You know it was by sheer luck I did Raja ki Ayegi Baraat, I had no idea what I was doing, imagine if someone came up to me today and said, 'Rani-ji ki apki liye ek role hai, koi apko rape karega aur aap use shaadi karte hai' (I have a role for you where you marry your rapist) I would say, 'Achaa? Ye film to mei nehi karungi.' (Really? I won't do this film)

But at that point probably I wasn't thinking and I did a lot of films because I was too excited to get a film as a newcomer. So that time I did a lot of films that helped me chose the path I wanted to take because they made me realise I wanted to do meaningful cinema and shape the industry, not just any role that comes my way.

So I just took it up and when I finished on Raja ki Ayegi Baraat and I brought all my school friends over to watch the film I realised how bad it was. I was so embarrassed because throughout the film and they were laughing at me. When I was crying in the film, they were laughing.

And my brother remarked you are not crying you are dancing, will you stop shaking while you cry? I was like ok.... When I hear Raja ki Ayegi Baraat so many memories come rushing to my head.

Do you have any plans to direct your own film?
You know actually I would like to do a lot of things in life, you never get to do everything you hope to do, but you know this question is often asked of an actor that has completed ten years of acting and although I have no plans at present I will never say never because I don't know what plans God has in store for me.

Maybe down the track I will direct a film and you will say, Oh! Rani had said she doesn't want to direct and now she is directing!' If I get energy rush in my body and find a project I believe in then I will direct.

Do you think the recent films- whether it is story line or role have been doing you justice?
You know I have been playing a very diverse range of roles and I worked with such talented people and its helped me grow as an actor and a person.

I played a blind and deaf girl in Black who had to grow so much in the film and at the same time a romantic film like Paheli where I am in love with a ghost. There is so much to learn from the blind and deaf people I visited during the making of Black.

Every film is different to me, in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK) I played a woman that cheats on her husband, it wasn't about cheating or having an affair, it was about following your heart and that was the message I was trying to convey.

So you have to balance out you know? You can't say Hey! She cheated on her husband and that makes it ok.

How do you keep your body so fit and what do you do to make yourself more flexible for dance moves?
I am a classical dancer so.. you know I didn't like dancing to begin with and my brother used to dance and my mother forced me and that is how I got into dancing. But now dancing is something that I really enjoy and it comes naturally to me. I am a classical dancer.

If you weren't acting, what would you be doing?
Probably married in Kolkata somewhere with a husband and two kids, making chappatis (bread) and putting my pallu (sari) in my kamar (waist). (laughs) I really didn't have any plans in life, my mother drove me to acting and I owe my success to her.

Will your new found love for cricket result in buying a cricket team?
Oh my god! You know actors are not as rich as you make us out to be! No no, I have no plans to buy any team.

There is a close relationship between Bengalis and Punjabis; you play a lot of Punjabi roles...
Yaaa! I am telling you, even the marriages are lovely! You know actually there is a very interesting story to understand my link to Punjabis. I was actually exchanged in the hospital. No really! You are laughing but I don't know my true identity whether I am a Sardar or Bengali.

(laughter) As a baby, I remember my mother said she was fighting for me and getting me back because I had brown eyes (removes sunglasses to show her brown eyes to a chorus of 'finally!' and more cameras flashing) so uh.. because of my brown eyes.

You know the first time she saw me she noticed my brown eyes and then the next day the nurse gave her a different baby and she went to feed her and noticed the baby didn't have brown eyes and she went around to each room in the hospital screaming where is my baby?

Ye to mera bacha nehi hai! (This is not my baby) And my chacha was like, 'What! ye tumhara bacha nehi hai! Kaha hai tumhara bacha? Chalo jaake dhoondte hai' (This isn't your baby? Where is your baby then? Let's go find her!)

And she found me with a Punjabi family and fought with them for me and so that is my link to Punjabis! To this day I don't know if I am Punjabi or not but that is probably why I feel at ease in Punjabi roles and when Dil Bole Hadippa came along I said, 'ye to mein ek jhatke mein kar sakti hoon!' (I can totally do this!)

Which Hollywood and Bollywood actor/actresses inspire you?
I like Meryl Streep, I watch every one of her films and I think she has done wonderful films of a wide range and variety year after year and I die to watch any Meryl Streep movie as soon as it comes out. I also like Tom Hanks, I think he is a very good actor and make a point to watch his films, they are very inspiring.

In Bollywood my favourite actor is Dillip Kumar. He is so effortless in front of the camera; also because he acted in my father's films you know from then he inspired me. For me, there is no greater actor than him. And actress is Mumtaz.

'Shah Rukh Khan is like family to me': Rani Mukerji
Prithwish Ganguly / DNA
Sunday, March 21, 2010 10:34 IST

Mumbai: Actor Rani Mukerji turns 32 today. For a long time gossip mills have been abuzz with rumours of her fall-out with Shah Rukh Khan due to her allegiance to Salman Khan. Rani dismisses such talks as baseless and says she and Shah Rukh are still best of friends.

“Shah Rukh and I are fine. He is like family to me. Just because people don’t see me at his dos doesn’t mean we’ve fallen out. There are four people with whom I can never stay out of touch - Karan (Johar), Shah Rukh, Aamir (Khan) and Adi (Aditya Chopra). They are instrumental in shaping my career in Bollywood,” she says.

Rani will spend her birthday with her near ones and close friends. Ask her to reveal who her close friends are, and she says, “No way.”

Talking about her movies, 2010 looks good for her. “I have got a great film No One Killed Jessica. I might sign one more which means two releases this year,” she says.

Amidst speculations that she might not work outside the Yash Raj Films banner, Rani has signed this movie with UTV. She says, “I will always be a part of Yash Raj. ButI’ve worked outside them too with Sanjay (Bhansali) and Karan. I just want to be a part of good films,” she ends.

Rani Mukherji is back!
Buzz up!

Rani Mukherjee hasn't been in the news much (except for about her personal life), and hasn't had many releases either. She's been working almost entirely for Yash Raj, but that's not where he next film is coming out of.

Rani is acting in No One Killed Jessica, being produced by UTV Spotboy. The film also stars Vidya Balan, and Rani says she's excited by her role.

“It is a powerful role," she says of the character she is playing, which is that of a journalist, "I don’t know how my fans are going to react to it, but I am looking forward to it because it’s an interesting movie based on a true-life story.” The film is based on the famous murder of a model in Delhi.

Rani didn't reveal much about the movie, but feels that every role should be a challenge and every role should be a dream role. "If you take every role as a dream role, only then is it possible to give your best to it. I take my films equally seriously. I know I have to give my best to each role,” adds Rani.

Speaking about the controversies following her - she is said to be dating Yash Raj scion Aditya Chopra - she said, “I never listen to what others say, and that's why I only come out when my film is going to be released."

Rani's last film was Dil Bole Hadippa, which didn't do well, but she retains her legion of fans who range from Dilip Kumar to Salman Khan and, of course, the audience, for many of whom she still remains a favourite.

It’s Rani, not Vidya for Sabya

There’s been gossip about designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s directorial venture and who among his favourites will star in it — Rani Mukerji or Vidya Balan.

While both are Sabya’s close friends and favourite Bollywood clients, and despite rumours of Vidya being the ‘obvious’ choice, the designer recently said that, if he has to choose from among the two, it will have to be Rani. And why? Sabya says he’s a bit of a loyalist and his loyalties lie with Rani.

After all he started his career as a Bollywood designer with her in Black. Also, Sabya feels Rani will do more justice to the role he has in mind. Hmm. Maybe working with one of her favourite designers may bring the much-needed luck factor in Rani’s waning B-Town career. Let’s wait and watch.

Babe watch in Delhi

Rani Mukerji, hoping to shop alone, had to beat a hasty retreat when a curious crowd gathered around her

By Vickey Lalwani
Posted On Thursday, March 25, 2010

Most people want to be famous so that people recognise them. Ironically, when they do get there, they will try any trick to move around incognito. Rani Mukerji hoped that she could get away with some shopping in Khan Market in Delhi while shooting for Who Killed Jessica Lal, but had to retreat in a hurry when a crowd gathered around her.

One fine afternoon a few days ago, Rani decided to dress in plain, simple clothes and wore no make-up as the urge for some retail therapy struck. Khan Market is about a kilometer away from her hotel. She surprised her driver when she told him that she didn’t need the car. The next minute the driver saw her walk off briskly into the market, unescorted.

The excursion started with a bit of window-shopping. Just when she was beginning to enjoy herself, she realised that some people were staring.

Hearing her name being called out in soft tones a few minutes later, Rani looked over her shoulder and sensed that a crowd was gathering around her. Clearly, her plans for some alone time had gone awry. Sensing that the situation could get out of hand, she had to make a quick decision.

Without losing a minute, Rani called up the driver and asked him to come and take her back to the hotel. Pronto.

Rani, at least, can take comfort in the fact that even if she isn’t inundated with films, her fans haven’t forgotten her yet.

Its Rani’s time!

The cocooned days seemed to have got over for this light eyed beauty. After a brief disappearance from the scene, Rani Mukherji is back to the field.

The actress is said to be currently in Delhi shooting for Rajkumar Gupta's ‘No One Killed Jessica’. The actress said to be having a good bonding time with her co-star Vidya Balan.

Coming to Vidya, our birdies say that she has lost a movie to Rani. Earlier we had mentioned that noted fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee will be making a directorial debut. It was then alleged that he will be roping in one of his favourite actress Vidya. However birdies reveal that now the offer will be going to Rani instead.

Reason: It was with Rani’s ‘Black’, Sabyasachi first stepped in the B-town and besides, he believes that the actress will be more appropriate for his film.

Well, looks like Rani season is nearing…

Rani’s ‘Sheer’ Elegance

Rani Mukherjee has always been a patron of sheer saris with attractive bold borders. Well, she’s right about being so loyal to sheer saris. She looks her best in such saris.

Perhaps, she’s taken a liking to the neutral shade of beige since she was spotted in beige saris recently. At the Indian Film Festival in Australia and in the show Lift Kara De, Rani Mukherjee was seen draped in beige sheer saree featuring contrast embellished borders and embellished floral motifs, paired with contrast blouse. Not much of accessories save for a pair of huge danglers and a wrist watch. Simple yet beautiful!!

We particularly loved the border of the sari she was wearing for Lift Kara De. The combination of lush maroon velvet and black embellished panels was just fabulous. Also, at the Indian Film Festival, the black and ivory shaded in-skirt that she paired with her sheer sari was definitely an interesting touch.

Next time you choose to wear a sheer sari, try pairing it with an ombre in-skirt, maybe in complementary shades rather than contrast shades for a more subtle and elegant look.

Capital gain

By Subhash K Jha
Posted On Friday, March 26, 2010 at 02:11:36 AM

Things are bound to be difficult when one has to shoot in crowded areas with actresses as popular as Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji.

The director of No One Killed Jessica learnt this while shooting with hidden cameras in the bustling lanes of old Delhi. Gupta undertook this security risk despite knowing that shooting with Vidya and Rani as part of a crowd would be entirely different from his experience of shooting with Rajeev Khandelwal in the crowded areas of Mumbai for Aamir.

Rajkumar Gupta said, “By now I’ve learnt the art of putting my characters on the streets for candid shots by shooting with hidden cameras. It was much easier while shooting with Rajeev as he was then only known for his work on television. But who doesn’t know Vidya and Rani?”

“I wanted to shoot on real streets with real people, and that too not in the usual spots like Chandni Chowk. I’m talking about jam-packed areas where cars and vans cannot reach,” he added.

Although the director developed cold feet when the unit secretly reached old Delhi in a van, Rani and Vidya insisted on hopping out to mingle with the crowd. “I don’t know how I’d have managed this shoot if it wasn’t for Vidya and Rani’s insistence that they’d be fine blending in with the crowd. We shot as much as we could, but then people started recognising the two celebrities. That’s when we’d quickly run to the van and flee to another part of old Delhi,” said Rajkumar Gupta.

FRIEND IN NEED

VIDUSHI MEHRA, who played Sonam Kapoor’s elder sis in Aisha, is now set to play the role of Sabrina Lall’s best friend in the upcoming No One Killed Jessica, which is being shot entirely in Delhi. Rani Mukerji plays an investigating journalist in the film and Vidya Balan plays Jessica’s sister Sabrina.
A source told us that the crew shot a candle-lit vigil sequence at India Gate in March and that is where Vidushi was sighted with Vidya! The scene had 600-700 people and was shot at night, to avoid the crowd. Vidushi confirmed, “Yes, I’ve been cast in the film. But I cannot disclose anything else at the moment.” Delhibased theatre artistes Bubbles Sabharwal and Suhel Seth have been approached for the movie. Garima Sharma

Kajol, Konkona Sen, Vidya Balan, Prachi Desai, Rani Mukherji- famous for?

Despite the fact that Bollywood actresses these days get noticed for their bodies, rather than talent, there are few handful actresses who have made it to the top on the basis of sheer talent. These women do not have a perfect figure to flaunt, till they continue to rule the roost.

The first name that comes to the mind when we speak of the not so perfect figure is Kajol. She has never been appreciated for her style or fashion sense and she has cared a damn about it.Kajol, with her sparkling eyes and mischievous smile can breathe life into any character. She is probably the only actress who does not have a shelf life.

It is believed that the career of Bollywood actresses get over once they tie the knot and have a kid. Though the norm is changing these days, not many actresses have been successful post motherhood.

Kajol, as usual, remains an exception. She has a daughter and does very selective roles. Post motherhood, she returned with a bang in ‘Fanaa’and again made everyone fall in love with her role in the recently released’ My Name is Khan’.

Bengali by birth, Konkona Sensharma was always known for her talent, rather than the size of her waist.

Initially it was thought that she is perfect for so-called arthouse cinema, but these days she is playing different role in mainstream Bollywood films as well.

She was paired opposite Ranbir Kapoor in’ Wake up Sid’ and they made an unusual but delightful pair. The movie was hit and her acting received numerous compliments.

When she appeared on screen, even Amitabh Bacchan was mersmerised. We are talking about Vidya Balan. She knows how to act and has a gorgeous face. The only thing that was missing in her was a perfect figure and she tried to fit into the mould by hook or by crook.

The result was disastrous and she received much flak for her fashion sense. After realization dawned on her, Vidya came to the point that she is better at being herself rather than trying to someone else.

She lost weight, spent much time understanding her body type and appeared in an eye dazzling form in the film’Pa’.The Indian saris and salwars showed off her curves perfectly and she received much appreciation for carrying out the role of a single mother so well.

Prachi Desai is another actress who does not have a so-called sex bomb image. In fact, when she was doing Indian Television she had to wear only Indian clothes, keeping in mind the demand of the character and had a very homely image.

Even when she appeared as a modern girl in ‘Rock On’, the dresses were not revealing, though it was chic and trendy.

Rani Mukherji was not at all fit and thin when she appeared on screen for the first time. She was fit and was often criticized for her weight. However she has always been appreciated for her good acting skills.

Over the years, her weight has always fluctuated. While she looked healthy in ‘Hum Tum’, her last film’Dil Bole Haddipa’saw her wearing a bikini top and looking extremely glamorous.

However, it seems that the new improved Rani could not attract the audience, since the film sank without a trace, despite some heavy duty promotion and featuring current heartthrob Shahid Kapoor.

Bollywood Festival mesmerises Australians

Indian Weekender in Melbourne

Australians and Indians in Australia alike have hailed the Indian Film Festival held earlier this month in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth as a great success. The second leg of the festival is being held in Auckland next month.

Organised in the backdrop of tensions caused by the high number of attacks on Indian students living in Australia over the past one year or so, the festival has done its bit to soothe ruffled feathers on both sides of the equation, Mitu Bhowmick Lange, one of the festival’s organisers told Indian Weekender.

The star attraction at the festival was Bollywood diva Rani Mukherjee, whose retrospective was a major part of the landmark event.

"The way I look at it, in any big country around the world, the majority of people are peace-loving and it is only only a minor group that believes in spreading hatred," she said at the media conference preceding the event in Melbourne.

"I hear the sad stories about attacks on Indians, but I’m sure it's only a minority that is responsible for these attacks. I'm going to ask the majority of Australians to speak up against the people who want to spread hatred.”

Asked if she hesitated at any point of coming to Australia, she said, "This [festival] was decided a long time ago. To cancel this programme and my visit would have been immature."

The 30-plus films in this year's festival included the Rani Retrospective of six of her films. Though Bollywood is noted for flamboyant escapism, many of Mukherjee's films are tough tales, with heroines who are poor, disabled or thwarted by stubborn tradition. The first night opened with the screening of Dil BoleHadippa.
Asked which were her personal favourites, Rani said, "The films I enjoyed doing the most are Black and Bunty Aur Babli.” Both films played at the retrospective.

"Black is about a blind girl, Michelle, who comes out victorious in the end. It gave me a great feeling of strength because it talked about the fact that nothing is lost in the world. If you want to achieve something you have to have passion and put your mind to it. It really uplifts my spirit when I watch it.

"And Bunty, because it's the story of two kids who come from a very small town to the big city to follow their dream. Reality then hits them. But it's also the fact that if you are a good person you can use the good opportunities and leave the bad ones."

Two free film screenings at Federation Square were specifically aimed at interna- tional students. "We are doing this so that all our Indian students – can bring their friends, bring their beanbags and just make a night of it and watch these great films under the stars," Ms Bhawmick Lange said.

One of the free screenings was of the all time Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots, whose celebrated director Rajkumar Hirani was also present. Mr Hirani shot to fame with Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai and has quickly established a reputation for making riproariously funny flicks that also have become huge box office successes.

Other Bollywood personalities present were Sohail Khan, Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Singh. Both Mr Hirani and Sohail Khan.

Rani Mukerjee talking exclusively with Indian Weekender expressed her desire to come and do a shoot in New Zealand. Anurag Singh also said that he had planned to visit New Zealand to scout locations for some of his upcoming films. Sohail Khan, Imtiaz Ali and Raju Hirani also echoed similar views and said they would surely plan on visiting New Zealand and keep Indian Weekender informed of their plans.
Indian Weekender assured the film makers of all support in New Zealand.

Bollywood productions that were screened also included Dev D, Dostana, Ghajini, Kaminey, Love Aaj Kal, Luck by Chance, New York, Paa, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, and Wake Up Sid.

Its “Beyond Bollywood” category included regional Indian films Chaturanga (Bengali), Harishchandrachi Factory (Marathi), Kanchivaram (Tamil), Mee Sreyobhilashi (Telugu), Mudhal Mudhal Mudhal Varai (Tamil), and Shob Choritro Kalponik (Bengali).

It is also screened some documentaries, including Antardhwani (Hindi), Ladies' Special (English), The Journalist And The Jihadi (English), The Shop That Sold Everything (Bengali), Three Of Us (silent), and Vellapokkathil (Malayalam).

Australian students of celebrated dancer-choreographer Shiamak Davar, who runs his dance class franchises around the world put up excellent dance routines before and in between shows effectively showcasing the beauty, creativity and fluidity of rhythm fuelled Bollywood dancing that blends traditional and contemporary techniques.

Filmfare award winner director-screenwriter-producer Yash Chopra (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) was the patron of the Festival, which was organized by the Melbourne headquartered Mind Blowing Films whose director is Ms Bhowmick Lange. The company’s advisory board comprises Ronnie Screwala (UTV), Amit Khanna (Reliance), and Simi Grewal (actress).

As part of the festival a short film competition has also been organised with participating filmmakers from Australia and New Zealand besides other countries.

Rani clears the air
Rumour mills can stop griding, Rani Mukherjee has made it absolutely clear that she and Shah Rukh are friends.

Stories of the two being katti were doing the rounds, saying that she hadn't been seen at any of his parties. To this Rani says: “If I am not attending his parties that doesn’t mean we are no more friends. Shah Rukh and I meet whenever possible, and how often have you seen me at parties anyway?"
Rani says that going to public events too much isn't her scene. "But I do attend the parties of close people. It's just that I wasn't in town when his party happened and so I wasn't there."

Simple enough explanation, which should set to rest the talk of a rift. Rani says that it might not even be possible for anyone to dislike King Khan: "Shah Rukh is someone whom everyone likes. I have been a fan of his since childhood. I am certain no one can get angry with him. He is so full of energy!”

Rani has high praise for all the Khans of the industry and says she has learned much from her friends. "Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman have always inspired me. I am so glad that I got to work with all three of them and believe me I have picked up a lot from them."

Rani met Shah Rukh Khan on the sets of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and they became friends. She is current shooting for No One Killed Jessica which also stars Vidya Balan.

When Sabya met Raima

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1100407/jsp/...ry_12309394.jsp

R: Well, jeans and a white shirt. It has to be comfortable. And I am normally never in flats!
S: But nothing like a 5’1” woman wearing flats to a party. She can completely disarm her man! You know how an African woman in her robes and un-manicured nails invariably travels first class! You are left wondering who is she? Is she a head of state? And it disarms me that I can’t size her up! Then she takes out her boarding pass and you can see a flash of Rolex! Frida Kahlo used to say that these Parisians are so stupid, you come in your national costume and they think you are exotic…. Even Rani (Mukerji) has a bad knee. She has finally started using her amazing collection of flats. I think health problems have made you women more fashionable!

When a Malaysian politician was stuck between dirty toilets and Rani Mukherjee

Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said was put on a spot while he addressed questions on dirty public toilets and on Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee’s impending visit to Terengganu.

He said the flushing down of sanitary pads, along with indiscriminate dumping of rubbish, into toilets had choked the plumbing systems.

“The fault lies with those who disregard cleanliness. Outsiders are disgusted and even the toilets at mosques are not spared. I feel embarrassed,” the Star Online quoted him as telling Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (PAS-Sura).

Earlier, on asking whether Rani’s visit in June to shoot a romance movie would spread Bollywood culture to the state, Ahmad said the Bollywood entourage would shoot the movie, “not perform at karaoke outlets.”

He was then asked the number of karaoke and other entertainment outlets that had been approved so far, and he replied 46.
