Rani Mukerji bullies Neil Nitin Mukesh!
[ 0 ]

Rani Mukerji and Neil Nitin Mukesh bumped into each other recently. Neil, who's a great fan of the actress, promptly took out his camera and started clicking her. Rani saw this and decided to pull his leg. She asked him to delete the pics. Poor Neil didn't know what to do and very obediently deleted them. Then she started laughing saying she was just pulling his leg. Now the two go back a long time. Neil was an assistant to Kunal Kohli on Mujhse Dosti Karoge! That's why Rani bullies Neil.

Rani Mukherjee back in action

Begins shooting
By ApunKaChoice

After a superflop Dil Bole Hadippa last year, Rani Mukherjee may have been written off by her detractors, but the lady is just not in the mood to throw in the towel.

The actress is back in the thick of tinseltown action. On Monday, she began shooting for her upcoming film ‘No One Killed Jessica’ in Delhi.

The shooting was held at a farmhouse in Chatarpur. Rani reportedly shot a long 20-minute sequence without a hitch. The movie also stars Vidya Balan as Jessica Lall’s sister Sabrina who fought relentlessly for justice for her sister’s murder.

Directed by Rajkumar Gupta of Aamir fame, the film is based on the murder of Delhi model Jessica Lall in 1999 and the long legal battle to get justice for her.

The shooting is likely to be held at a TV channel studio in the coming days.

Besides this film, Rani is also slated to act in the celluloid adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s novel ‘Midnight’s Children’ to be directed by Deepa Mehta.

On her own

A glowing Vidya Balan gets chatting about her new house and life post Ishqiya
You have always lived in Chembur. How do you like living in a different suburb like Khar?
I quite like it here. Like Chembur there is a neighbourhood feel here. There is greenery, a certain warmth, a market close by, not to mention less travelling time to work.

The glow on your face says it all. The response to Ishqiya is fantastic.
You are right, it is unbelievable! The response far exceeded our expectations. We couldn’t have asked for more.

What do people have to say about the bold scenes between you and Arshad Warsi?
There is not a single person who asked me why I did the scenes or said that I shouldn’t have done them or that they were too brazen for me, not even my close friends who are very possessive and protective about me. Others have said that they could not believe that the same girl of Paa has done these scenes so effortlessly. Everyone felt that they proved my versatility.

But were you apprehensive when the film came to you?
On the contrary I was flattered! In fact I went to Abhishek Chaubey (director) to thank him because I knew I was not the natural choice for the role. At the same time, I took some time to agreed to the film as I wanted to read the script.

Were you, at any time, uncomfortable while doing the scenes?
No, not really. I sat with Abhishek a month before we started shooting as I wanted to understand my character of Krishna completely.

I am not a very aggressive person and I wanted to make sure there was no holding back when I played Krishna. I needed to get over all those mental obstacles, not only about using expletives or picking up a gun and shooting, but everything else, like her body language and expressions which always reeked of sensuality. Krishna had to be sensual without wearing revealing clothes. I pushed the envelope and I am glad it has paid off. I enjoyed being on the other side. People asked if it was a gamble, and I said it wasn’t but it was a job well done. I am not sure what would have been the response if the film had not done well.

Is it more difficult to switch from being de-glam to glamorous than the other way round?
Either way, it is about getting out of your comfort zone and is equally difficult. Anyway I don’t think glamour is the criterion when I take on a film, the role is. Glamour can be part of the role, it can’t be the role. For me Lolita in Parineeta was just as glamorous, even though she was presented in sarees. Glamour is about a certain sheen that the character displays, but which we tend to demarcate by Indian and Western wear! That is very sad because there is nothing more glamorous and sexier than a saree.

Your dressing sense is now being appreciated. Have you finally found your designer in Sabyasachi?
Personally, I have been wearing Sabya for a while. He dresses me for most of my events. I like the clothes he makes because they are very organic and also because of the work that he does. It is a sensibility match. Anyways, I do wear Sabya’s creations but not only his.

Is it true that you will be doing Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children?
Even I heard that one, but Deepa has not approached me. I met Deepa, but it was for a film with R. Madhavan and me that did not work out. All I can say is that we hope to work together in the future.

What about Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Chenab Gandhi and Sujoy Ghosh’s next?
You will have to ask Sanjay Leela Bhansali that. I was approached by him two years ago but I have not heard from him after that, so I really don’t know what’s happening. As for Sujoy Ghosh, he narrated an idea, which I found very exciting. I am waiting to get a narration now.

Is it flattering when a filmmaker comes to you saying that if you don’t do the film he will not make the movie?

It is very flattering, but on the other hand it can be like emotional blackmail! I don’t get taken in by that and do the film only if I am convinced.

When do you start shooting for Rajkumar Gupta’s No One Killed Jessica?
The team is already in Delhi and I join them at the end of the month.

Have you met Jessica’s sister Sabrina on whom the role is shaped?
Rajkumar Gupta did not want me to meet Sabrina as he did not want the film to be biographical. So I have just done the regular preparations and created my own person.

Is it true that you and Rani Mukerji, who plays a journalist in the film, did not want to work together?
Both of us were in talks for the film for a very long time as we both liked the script. I am thrilled that Rani is part of the film as she is one of my favourite actresses.

Rani and Neil ‘click’ immediately

Always think twice before you hit the delete button. That’s the lesson poor Neil Nitin Mukesh learnt when he bumped into Rani Mukerji at an event recently. Neil is apparently a great fan of Rani’s and was quite overjoyed to meet the reclusive actress. Now as

we all know, Neil is a huge photography buff and always carries his camera with him wherever he goes. Not wanting to let go of the opportunity, he whipped out his camera and began shooting photos of Rani.

Incidentally, the actor’s association with Rani goes back to the days when he assisted director Kunal Kohli on Mujhse Dosti Karoge in which Rani played the lead. Neil obviously thought that having known him for such a long time, Rani wouldn’t mind his photographing her.

When Rani saw Neil shooting away, she called him and asked him to delete all the photos. A discomfited Neil immediately obeyed. That’s when Rani burst out laughing and told him she’d only been teasing. But poor Neil had already lost all his photos.

Shape your body like a star!

Want to get that perfect shape? Personal trainers of hotshot stars share their fitness secrets with Nona Walia

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Ranbir Kapoor’s shoulders and abs

Trainer: Abhishek Sharma
“Ranbir’s fabulous shoulders are a result of his playing years of soccer. He’s a brilliant player. I think six and eight-pack abs are highly overrated. Ranbir’s also got very toned abs. In fact, his abs are something most intelligent Indian men would aspire for, unlike eight-pack abs, which result from overdoing contractions. With Ranbir, we did some yoga, meditation and boxing exercises. In Saawariya, he even had a boxing sequence, where he used those exercises. There’s a lot of footwork, shoulder-swing exercises, along with running short sprints, skipping. After a hard workout, we follow up with relaxation and chanting. Ranbir’s rather a calm person, so meditation wasn’t tough for him, unlike other youngsters his age. We don’t do power yoga but a more classical yoga. His diet includes a lot of proteins, along with fruits and vegetables. He eats a good breakfast, moderate lunch and light dinner!”

John Abraham's upper torso

Trainer: Deanne Pandey
“John’s got a fabulous upper body. His chest is a result of rigorous weight-lifting. He loves weights and usually does 100 kg or 250 pounds. That’s visible with the size of his back, biceps and abs. Genetically, John has a big build, so he does minimum cardio, no yoga but functional training and abdomen exercises. To lift weights, he also makes his lower back muscles stronger. John’s a vegan, though he eats eggs and prawns. He’s very particular about his protein and having fruits and vegetables.”

Saif Ali Khan’s chiselled face

Trainer: Payal Gidwani “Saif’s got a great face. Everyday, he does 100 Surya Namaskars, which helped him shed facial mass. (Surya namaskar is a combination of 12 postures, with different breathing patterns. It helps you reduce fat and stretches every muscle.) As a result, Saif looks 10 years younger and leaner. He does yoga thrice a week and goes to the gym three times a week. At the gym, Saif does a lot of cardio, weight training, cross-trainer, balancing postures, breathing and meditation. But yoga helped him chisel his face to perfection. He also did a lot of inverted postures which helped him tone up. Saif’s particular about healthy eating, so avoids fatty, sugary and processed food.”

Deepika Padukone’s arms

Trainer: Abhishek Sharma
“Deepika has athletic arms and shoulders, which are very flexible. She doesn’t follow a gym routine. Her workout is harder and more professional, like that of Leander Paes and Sania Mirza. Hence, her body is toned like a professional sportsperson. For her shoulders, she does a lot of free-hand exercises and push-ups. She uses her own body weight to strengthen her muscles. Her training isn’t just for a great looking body but a stronger one. Her workouts are more focussed on the outdoors. She’s very disciplined about her fitness regimen. She wakes up at 5.30 am and exercises. Once a week, she does high-intensity workouts and runs three km for warm-up, following up with stretches, contractions and pushups. She also does yoga, breathing and shav asanas. To improve her endurance, she’s also training in martial arts. Her body has improved with kicks and punches. You saw it in Chandni Chowk to China. Deepika loves her South Indian food, but burns her calories. She doesn’t take any processed foods or sugar. Must-haves in her diet are almonds, fruits and salads in the morning.

Lara Dutta’s butt

Trainer: Deanne Pandey “She’s got a toned body. But her butt is tight and taut, which is a result of yoga, swimming and working out. In fact, Lara has a great upper torso. She swims every alternate day. She’s very particular about her yoga sessions which she does thrice a week. She does goddess and warrior poses, along with basic cardio (45 minutes) and body weights. She uses the stepper regularly. Lara’s a vegetarian but eats eggs. Once a day, she has a protein shake. It’s her swimming, gym and yoga that give her firm buttocks.”

Rani Mukerji’s back

Trainer: Payal Gidwani
“Rani’s got a toned back now. But two years ago, her back was bulky. So, she did
Surya namaskars
for her upper body along with asanas to improve her posture. It made her upper torso leaner. Now, she has a toned and stronger back. For her arms, Rani did a lot of parvat asanas (mountain poses) to get toned arms. For her back, she did bhujang asanas or cobra poses. She’s very dedicated, works out six times a week for two hours. She also does cardio for 45 minutes. Rani now eats very healthy, no sweets, fried food and rice for her.”

Bipasha Basu’s abs

Trainer: Deanne Pandey
“Basic workouts don’t work for Bipasha, her body requires harder workouts. She never misses a day of exercise. Even while travelling, she finds a gym. Her flat abs are a result of hours of cardio (for 45 minutes), slow bicycling, push-ups and tricep dips. She does ball crunches by holding a weight plate. She also focuses on her diet to build muscles and cut out the fat. She doesn’t eat carbs at night. For breakfast, she takes 4-6 egg whites. Her lunch consists of chicken, 2-3 vegetables with bajra rotis, a glass of chach is a must. While dinner, is also chicken/fish but no roti. She serves herself huge portions of food.”

Girls can like girls

A woman needn't see just green when she sees another of her sex; she can admire her too, says Ritu Verma

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

IT was a nice kiss,” said Britney Spears after she locked lips with Madonna at an award function in 2003. At a recently-held award function, Vidya Balan proved her fancy for Rekha by dressing up like her in a trademark saree, complete with chunky traditional earrings and sideswept hair.
Turning green with envy is not the only thing women do! They also get swept off their feet by other inspiring women. Not too long ago, it was Rani Mukerji, who confessed her fascination for Madhuri Dixit on national television. She said, “Madhuri inspired me to be what I am. I was mad about her. There is nobody like Madhuri. I absolutely adore her.”

Girl crushes are as normal as the regular kind, except they lack the sexual quotient. It’s pure hero-worship. Homemaker Jagriti Khanna recollects being caught staring by her house captain, who she worshipped for her confidence in school. She even baked her first cake for her birthday and was rewarded with her photograph!
As for 25-year-old Kiran Dahitule, a Punebased reporter, her biggest high came when she met actor Kajol, her idol, on an episode of the television show Lift Kara De. Claiming to be Kajol’s
biggest fan, she enjoys dressing up like her, but chose to be ‘Kiran’ when she met her ‘crush’ in person. When Kiran met Kajol, she reveals, “I couldn’t breathe, hear or talk. I was given water and some time to calm down before the shoot resumed. I gifted her a Bible.”
Karuna Tomar, a college student, would understand since she feels the same way about her physics lecturer, who’s her girl crush. “She is truly an intellectual, a completely ‘no-nonsense’ person, who knows how to deal with over-amorous men.” Karuna gets nervous when her object of affection talks to her. ‘I visit her Facebook profile quite often and keep clicking on her photo album. My friends made fun of me when I asked for her number.”
The feeling can make one aspire to be their best. Manika Shrivastav, a 23-year-old senior marketing executive, secretly admires her boss, buying the same brands as hers and picking up her marketing tricks to crack deals. She wears spectacles, as her boss likes it on her and plans to marry early, since that’s what her mentor advises! States Manika, “At times, my colleagues are bugged when I quote her in almost every conversation. She makes me want to be better.”
Says psychiatrist Himanshu Saxena, “Many girls experience the same anxiety, excitement in presence of a female they appreciate, as they feel for a lover. Sometimes, it grows to an extent that they blindly start trusting that person. The best part of having a girl crush is you tend to absorb the good personality traits of your idol.”
He adds, “Everyone looks up to someone. It’s great to take inspiration from your idol but you shouldn’t allow a person to overpower your individuality.”
And, should one be vocal about their thoughts and risk their intentions being misread? Says Saxena, “I had cases where parents brought their kids because of their fixation for someone of the same sex. There is no harm in expressing yourself, as long as the other person takes it as a compliment.”
However, your aggression or excitement can kill the possibility of a future friendship. So, enjoy the high, as long as your crush doesn’t cause you to live in another’s shadow!

' I'm not trying to be Rekha' : Vidya Balan

..........Meanwhile, she is headed to Delhi today to shoot for Rajkumar Gupta’s film. Though tight-lipped about the film, Vidya is all praise for co-star Rani Mukerji. “She is a fabulous actor and one of my favourites among my immediate seniors. This film is based on an incident that we are all aware of. But, we are not filming it like a docu-feature.”

Bollywood movie starring Rani Mukherjee to be shot in Terengganu
Malaysia Sun
Tuesday 2nd March, 2010
(ANI)

Bollywood stars, including Rani Mukherjee, are set to shoot a romantic movie in Terengganu in May.

Mentri Besar Ahmad Said says that he had a meeting with the film's producer and even went through the script, but refused to reveal further details on the other stars who will be here, reports the Star Online.

"The production house will disclose the list of actors and other details during a press conference that would be held here before production starts," he said after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Primula Hotel and Islamic Civilisation Park (TTI).

The MoU involves TTI and Primula Hotel pooling their resources in providing quality service to visitors here.

Ahmad says the state government is thrilled that Terengganu has been selected as the film location as this could give a boost to the state since there is a host of Hindi movie buffs all over the globe.

He revealed that most of the film would be shot in Terengganu, including tourist destinations like Kenyir Lake, Tanjung Jara, the state museum and the Sultan Mahmud Airport.

He said the state has initially agreed to sponsor the accommodation and transport costs for the production crew.

"We will discuss other aspects like funding for certain slots of the movie with the producer as our aspiration is to have Bollywood on our soil," he said. (ANI)

YRF’s graph falling down

Talking of Dhoom, Yash Raj Films is now desperately hunting for some good scripts. They have suddenly realised that they are badly short on content and good cinema these days.

Yash Raj Films have been a premier production house in the country for a long time, but they haven’t done anything significant after Chak De India in terms of good cinema. New York too fell short by a distance. Shimit Amin’s next film After Chake De India Rocket Sngh Salesman of the Year too wasn’t exactly a stunner.

Rani Mukerji – the mascot of most YRF movies has also moved out of the banner following multiple flops. And if an actress like her needing work can move out, one can imagine what the banner is going through.

Add to that the fact that a slew of TV shows – albeit well produced – haven’t been able to break through the TRP charts for a leading TV channel – mostly because the channel’s history hasn’t been great enough for it to crack the TRP game.

With a man at the helm like Yash Chopra and a brain and heart like Aditya Chopra, we know it will just take one good film for them to bounce back into the business. We are waiting as we want them to make it big for the sake of Bollywood as well.

“I’ll always choose Rani over Vidya”

He came along like a magician and transformed Bollywood’s two classic actresses’ wardrobe from boring to being bold and beautiful! The two said actresses are Rani Mukerjee and Vidya Balan and their magician is ace fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

Initially trashed for their jaded fashion sense, Rani and Vidya now get featured as the most stylish Indian actresses across the media. We thus decided to ask Sabya who amongst the two is better when we bumped into him on day one of Lakme Fashion Week’10 in Mumbai. Sabya has also designed clothes for both Rani and Vidya in their forthcoming film together ‘No one killed Jessica’.

“I’ll always choose Rani over Viyda. Rani gave me a chance in Black when I was a no one and I am quite loyal that ways. I even won a National award for the same! Rani and I are Bengalis, love fish curry and bond over bitching about people in Bengali”, said Sabya with a smile.

Adding about Vidya he said, “Vidya is a beautiful Indian woman. I made her realize she should wear what suits her personality instead of following trends. We both love books and films so we are good friends too but Rani will always be a priority.”

So does that mean we will see Rani in Sabya’s forthcoming film as a director? “Nothing has been decided as yet. I am in my scripting stage. I am very moody. You may not see any known face in my film too” said the designer who calls a spade a spade.

Talking about his collection at the Lakme fashion week which got tremendous response, Sabya said, “It was something I should have showcased 4 years ago. Underwear showing is not Sabya but I did it because I don’t play to the gallery anymore. I don’t care what my critics say. I wanted to do what I never did before - Bohemian - Retro mix n match collection. I was getting jaded and I felt like rediscovering myself. I get a lot of inspiration from the French/ Italian films. The music of my show proved that as they played the theme of Cinema Paradiso, Frida, Evita, Godfather while the models sashayed down the ramp.”

We just loved the collection and the feisty man behind it.

Q: If Sabya had to cast either Vidya or Rani in a movie (that he plans to make) who will he choose?
S: If I really really had to make a choice, I will have to choose Rani because she has been a very good friend and she was instrumental in getting me into Bollywood. And I am very loyal that way. She is also Bengali and we share the same taste for fish and we gossip in Bengali.

Rajesh Sharma: Shooting Star
PRIYANKA DASGUPTA , TNN, Mar 9, 2010, 12.00am IST

Post-Ishqiya, Rajesh Sharma is on a high.

The actor has been recently roped in to play a cop in Rajkumar Gupta’s No One Killed Jessica. Rajesh, who is now shooting for Anjan Das’ Bedini in Purulia, will be off to Delhi on March 11 to shoot for Gupta’s film.

Says Rajesh, “A couple of months ago, I had auditioned in Delhi. It was only recently that I got to know that I have bagged the role. In the film, I play a corrupt cop who is also very duty-bound. While on the one hand he takes bribes, he also warns the aggrieved of the chances of documents getting tampered with.” The actor will be shooting in Delhi for a day in March and again join the unit in April.

Needless to say, Rajesh is excited about working with Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan. “I first saw Rani in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. People back then used to talk about her unusual voice. She has achieved phenomenal success in grooming herself from her days of Biyer Phool to Dil Bole Hadippa!
As for Vidya, this is my third film with her after Parineeta and Ishqiya.” While on Ishqiya, ask Rajesh why he wasn’t that visible during the promotions of the film and he says, “My PR skills are suspect. Moreover, I know that neither can I be SRK nor do I want to be like him. What’s important is that people from Bollywood and Tollywood have appreciated my work.”

Meanwhile, Rajesh has been approached to play a CBI officer for doing Navdeep Singh’s Basra. “I’m playing a snake charmer in Bedini which is an adaptation of Tarashankar Bandopadhyay’s work. In the pipeline is the release of Chillar Party. As of now, I’m eyeing Bollywood. I hope that one of my films becomes the turning point in my career,” he signs off.

Pitching for peace

Born into Mumbai film royalty, Rani Mukherjee finds fame a lot of fun, writes Alison Barclay

WHEN the actor known as the Queen of Bollywood took off from Mumbai for Melbourne yesterday, warnings about violence against Indians rang in her ears. But not for a minute did Rani Mukherjee consider staying home.

Retrospective: (above) Rani Mukherjee’s films feature in the Indian Film Festival.

‘‘The way I look at it, in any big communities around the world, the majority of people are peace-loving and only a minor group believes in hatred and is bad, basically,’’ says the guest of the Indian Film Festival, which opens today. ‘‘I hear the sad stories about attacks on Indians, but it’s only a minority. I’m going to ask the majority of Australians to speak up against the people who want to spread hatred.

‘‘Anyway, this (festival) was decided a long time back. To cancel this program and my visit would only be immature and harmful.’’

The 30-plus films in this year’s IFF include a Rani Retrospective of six of her best, plus her latest, Dil Bole Hadippa, which opens the festival tonight. Though Bollywood is noted for flamboyant escapism, many of Mukherjee’s films are tough tales, with heroines who are poor, disabled or thwarted by stubborn tradition.

‘‘The films I enjoyed doing the most are Black and Bunty Aur Babli,’’ she says, naming two in the retrospective.

‘‘Black is about a blind girl, Michelle, who comes out very victorious.

‘‘It gave me a great feeling of strength because it talked about the fact that nothing is lost in the world. If you want to achieve something you have to have passion and put your mind to it. It really uplifts my spirit when I watch it.

‘‘And Bunty, because it’s the story of two kids who come from a very small town to the big city to follow their dream. Reality really hits them. But it’s also the fact that if you are a good person you can use the good opportunities and leave the bad.’’

In Dil Bole Hadippa (Heart Goes Hooray), Mukherjee’s small-town girl wants to play big-league cricket. The role prompted a strict regimen of yoga and, yes, cricket, which she learned from scratch.

‘‘It’s hard to pick up a sport at this age, but I had to do it because once I’d taken on the script there was no turning back,’’ she says.

‘‘Cricket is a very interesting game; it’s more to do with technique than muscle power. I think more women should be encouraged to play this game. When I started preparing for this film I met a lot of girls who played fantastic cricket. It’s just that they aren’t as publicised as the men.’’

Born in 1978, Mukherjee landed a superb Bollywood pedigree: her father Ram is a cofounder of Filmalaya Studios, her brother a director and producer, her mother a singer and her aunt and cousin actors. Her uncommon beauty, of raven hair and clear golden eyes, proved very cinemagenic. But she worked hard for her star billing.

‘‘My dad said, ‘This industry is quite a tough place because people respect you only if you have success; if you don’t have success they won’t look at you again. You need to have your feet on the ground so you don’t get too excited by the success you do have, or too depressed if you have a failure’ . . . I think I’m doing all right now.’’

Indeed, Mukherjee wears her fame lightly, and likes to be approached by fans.

‘‘That is something I really like about fame, being able to bring a smile to someone’s face and make them happy.’’ Good fun, too, are the gossip mags. ‘‘It is quite entertaining to know my life through people and to know an aspect of my life that doesn’t exist for me,’’ she says of chatter about her supposed romances.

‘‘You know, in fact, I am going to marry but I don’t know when.

‘‘People have been speculating about my marriage for the last three or four years. But they still haven’t been able to set a date. I guess that it is in the hands of God.’’

Herald Sun

VISITING Indian screen siren Rani Mukherjee says that despite her overwhelming fame in India, she was surprised by how many people recognised her in Australia.

However, the beauty said she didn’t feel like a star.
‘‘As an actor, I don’t think about how famous I am or what awards I have won,’’ she said. ‘‘I think I’m like a beggar: I’m always waiting for gold to come my way.’’

Mukherjee was last in Melbourne for the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

She starred with a host of Bollywood dancers in a routine showcasing Indian culture for this year’s Commonwealth Games, to be held in New Delhi.

Rani: Sweets for her fans

How the mighty have fallen, exclaims Rapchik Rajni as she saunters into my penthouse. Who are you talking about I wonder and she replies, "Rani Mukherji."

She had gone for the shoot of the abhinetri's episode of Lift Kara De, that Karan Johar hosts for the small screen, and says that Rani was humility personified.

Unlike the other stars who came khaali haath for their shoot, Rani came armed with a huge bowl of kheer, specially cooked by her momma Krishnaji. Itna hi nahi, the actress also insisted on personally feeding her fan, saying she is emotional about her fan following.

Aur pata hai kya? Ms Mukherji also revealed that whenever she felt low, she would pull out her fan mail and read them to cheer herself up.

And confessing to being an ardent fan of Dilip Kumar, she also disclosed that she still treasures the letter the thespian sent to her after watching her performance in Black. Yeah, those indeed. were the days. Hai na?

The Sunday Age Hooray for Bollywood LIKE a cross-cultural beacon, Bollywood superstar Rani Mukerji arrived in a blaze of sequins and phone camera flashes at the Indian Film Festival gala on Thursday night. The actress created chaos on the red carpet as fans and photographers moved in for a souvenir picture, elbowing out her two biggest admirers — John Brumby and Robert Doyle. They got their chance a little later, when Mukerji graciously posed for happy snaps and kissed them on both cheeks. ‘‘Lord mayor, you are a charming human being and I am absolutely in love with you. If only I was born 20 years before,’’ she purred. So smitten was the Premier, he even offered up a W-class tram for Mukerji to take back to Mumbai. ‘‘We give them away to many places around the world; they are very good trams,’’ he insisted. Other Bollywood stars in attendance included director Rajkumar Hirani (the ‘‘James Cameron of Bollywood’’), cricketer-turned-director Anurag Singh, actor Sohail Khan and Imtiaz Ali. On the local front, Mick Molloy was there as a judge of the short film competition and to support his brother John, the festival’s co-director. The Molloys developed a passion for all things Bollywood when they attended India’s equivalent of the Oscars a few years ago. ‘‘Bollywood films are so joyous you can’t help but be swept away,’’ he raved.

Rani Mukerji & Vidya bonding!
TNN, Mar 17, 2010, 12.00am IST

Rani Mukerji, apparently, took Vidya Balan under her wing when these two were shooting for Rajkumar Gupta’s Who killed Jessica Lal? in New Delhi.

Visitors to the set say it was pleasant to see the once hoity-toity Rani share jokes and tips with Vidya. Of course Vidya is thrilled.

She was overheard saying, “Rani is such a doll. She is so simple and uncomplicated. We get along like a house on fire.” Honestly, Rani was this sweet-natured girl even earlier. For those who remember history, Rani was best friends with Preity Zinta, Aishwarya Rai and even Kareena Kapoor in the initial phase of her career. It is only after she made it to the position of Queen Bee that she started keeping a distance.

Her new found ‘friendly’ nature could only mean two things. Either Rani has rediscovered her old self (which is great) or she’s making an exception for Vidya, the current flavour of the season, who no one can ignore.
