FACE TO FACE with Ayaan Ahmad What’s on your iPod? Mostly Eagles and a lot of retro music. I also have a few old Hindi film songs. What’s your DVD pick? Mother India. It is a classic. Your favourite romantic scene in a movie? It’s from the film Notting Hill where Julia Roberts says, “I am just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her”. Then there is also a line from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai where Shah Rukh Khan says to Rani Mukerji, “Ek mard ka sar sirf teen aurton ke saamne jhukta hai – ek Durga maa ke samne, ek apni maa ke samne.” And then he just bows his head in front of her. Which actor would you love to go on a date? Katrina Kaif — she’s very cute. Which dialogue have you mouthed in front of the mirror the most? It’s from my film Ada…A Way of Life – “Agar ek daku Valmiki ban sakta hai to kya ek Valmiki daku nahi ban sakta?” |

why the are-they-are-they-not intrigue spells magic at the box office akshay-katrina: Like the Chuck Berry song, You Never Can Tell what’s on between these two. Singh is Kinng, Namastey London, Welcome, De Dana Dan — the box office loves the ‘are-they-are-they-not’ pair. Hrithik-aishwarya: Bollywood birdies twitter on about what’s been burning between Duggu and Ash, from Dhoom:2 to Jodhaa Akbar. Bollywood watchers find them red hot. So, their films shine. abhishek-rani: This one seemed to be a home run, but then something happened on the way to Jalsa. Rani lost Abhishek to Ash but their jodi hit jackpot with Bunty Aur Babli, Yuva and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Shahid-kareena: And just to drive home the point that we have cracked the flop code, here they are back on the list. Jab We Met worked (and how!) because they had split! |

Pride & Prejudice for Sanjay Leela Bhansali Prithwish Ganguly / DNASunday, December 6, 2009 23:59 IST Reliable sources revealed that though Rani and Sanjay had a tiff during the time the actor was shooting for Dil Bole Hadippa, the real reason for their fallout is Sanjay's decision to cast Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Guzaarish. "Their relationship suffered a setback when Rani decided to do Dil Bole Hadippa. Rani is very close to Sanjay's sister Bela, who wanted to direct her in a movie opposite Shahid Kapoor. Rani was reluctant because Shahid was younger to her. She backed out then but went on to sign the Yashraj film with Shahid. This irked both Bhansali and Bela," says the source. Another twist to tale is that the title of YRF movie (Hadippa) was Bela's intended title for her film. Sanjay had mentioned to Rani to take up the matter with Aditya Chopra, but she didn't do much. In fact, some say that it was Rani who suggested the title to YRF." Meanwhile, Aishwarya, who is among Bhansali's preferred heroines even after 2002, when she had a fallout with Salman Khan (and he's an extremely good friend of Sanjay) is making a comeback with Bhansali's next, Guzaarish, opposite Hrithik Roshan. "It is Rani's turn to feel bad because she's reported been telling people that Sanjay cast Aishwarya only because of the Dil Bole Hadippa episode. Rani has been among Sanjay's favourites as well, especially after Black." Another highly placed source adds: "We all know that Ash and Rani don't see eye to eye. So when Ash became the Bachchan bahu, her relationship with them also cooled off. Sanjay is neck deep in work and has no time for anything, while Rani has been overheard saying she doesn't want to be in touch with him anymore." The insider adds: "When Ash and Salman were at loggerheads after their relationship failed, Rani had bagged many projects as she was friends with Shah Rukh, Salman and even Amitabh Bachchan. But now the tables have been reversed." Bhansali could not be contacted for a comment while Rani chose to remain mum. |

Don of the Decade Calcutta telegraph The 25 iconic films of this decade that defined our relationship with the stars and the starmakers Posted Image ============================ Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan lose out in a t2 tie-breaker to Mr perfectionist and Miss precocious BEST ACTOR AAMIR KHAN After Mela, it could only get better for the man this decade. It sure did, and how! Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini... Aamir Khan showed in the last 10 years that he could push himself like no other star. His film releases were movie events. That he directed one of those films made it all the more special. And with 3 Idiots, he is set to make a smart start to the next decade. BEST ACTRESS RANI MUKERJI Is she in or is she out? That’s been the question on many lips after the lukewarm box-office response to Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Dil Bole Hadippa!. Clearly, the next decade won’t belong to her but this one she did rule. From Michelle McNally’s Chaplinesque walk (in Black) to Babli’s naughty nakhre (in Bunty Aur Babli) to Gulabji’s teekhi andaaz (in Saawariya). And when you add Saathiya, Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara, Chalte Chalte, Yuva and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna to that list, you know who the queen of Bollywood was. |

B'town's bikni babes ERAM AGHA, TNN 12 December 2009, 12:00am ISTText Babes in tinsel town are taking the road less travelled and riding high on the buzz that comes en route. Passengers on the bikini buzz — Kareena Minissha Lamba More Pics Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Minissha Lamba, Soha Ali Khan, Amrita Rao, Lara Dutta, Amrita Arora et al — have visibly been discussed more, which may not necessarily have been for their cinematic achievements. After playing the coy wife in Billu Barber, Lara Dutta’s sexy beach act in Blue put her in a different league. Even though actress Priyanka Chopra insisted that her swimsuit look in Dostana was part of narrative and not a glamourous plug-in, the look was talked about for weeks ever after. Rani’s bikini act in Dil Bole Hadippa was dubbed by most as a well-planned comeback stunt. But, the actress insisted that her friend , designer Manish Malhotra, was quite impressed with her well-toned body (Rani reportedly lost eight kilos before shooting for the flick) and found covering those shapely curves criminal. And on his insistence and encouragement, she slipped into the bikini top teamed with hot pants. The bikini-act perhaps gave the most visible makeover to Soha Ali Khan. A photo shoot for a men’s mag and a lip-lock in the flick Tum Mile later, the lithe beauty was being discussed in all the circles for her new-found brazenness. The buzz (that word again!) is that Soha is now expected to sport a hotter and skimpier attire in a forthcoming film. Kareena became synonymous with size zero post her bikini shot and skimpy wardobe in Tashan. While Bebo went on to do more diverse roles through the year, and even gained some curves – as she said famously in an interview, “I’ve got my butt back,” – the buzz around the size zero and the bikini never died. Amrita Rao was the quintessential Indian girl, on and off-screen, until her saucy act and skimpy clothes in Short Kut – The Con Is On, broke her stereotyped image. Hot off the racks is the news that Deepika has joined the league of bikini babes Lara Dutta and Jiah Khan in Sajid Khan’s Housefull. Time for a change? |

Hottest item numbers of 2009 Buzz up! Gone are the days when Bollywood films were considered incomplete without the ghisa pita dialogue - ‘Bhagwan ne aapko sab kuch diya papa, sab kuch, kaash ek dil bhi de diya hota.’ But not anymore! Thank God! Today, Hindi films are incomplete only without item numbers. Main Ayi Hoon UP Bihar Lootne, Come To me, etc are some popular item numbers, no doubt! But what about this year’s item songs? Can you think of any? If not, here’s a flashback at some of the hottest item numbers of 2009. Posted Image Dil Bole Hadippa! Starring: Rani Mukherji and Shahid Kapoor Bhangra Bistar was quite a cool number, where girl power seemed to be in full force. Rani and Rakhi Sawant no doubt gave a brilliant performance together in this number, but talking about the singing bit, we must say it was an all women show with Alisha Chinoy and Sunidhi Chauhan coming together with rap by Hard Kaur. Not to forget, Pritam’s brilliant music that did absolute justice to this item number. |

Ranbir on his first job In the Yash Raj release Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year, Ranbir Kapoor plays a fresh graduate grappling with a harsh workplace surrounded by ambitious and scheming salesmen. tabloid! asked him about his first FOB (fresh-off-the-boat) job: "I was an assistant director to Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the sets of Black. I did all the odd jobs — like cleaning the floors, the camera equipment, teaching the little kid how to deliver her dialogue. It was a grounding experience — I was never treated like anybody's son on the sets or given preference because of my last name. It was the most humbling and exhilarating experience. Watching seasoned actors like Amitabh Bachcan and Rani Mukherji was a wonderful experience." |

Indian cinema comes of age By Surekha Kadapa-Bose Sunday, 13 Dec, 2009 No doubt the song-dance-melodrama films are still the main staple of the industry but these are getting interspersed with well-made, fun-filled wholesome entertainment stuff with problems encountered in the real world. — File photo Art & Culture 'Paa' strikes a win at the box office 'Paa' strikes a win at the box office As a young kid I remember visiting my father’s friend’s home and the family talking in very hushed tones about one of their sons. He was not brought out to meet us. As a six-year-old kid I was very curious. On the pretext of washing my hands, one day I ventured into the neighbouring room and found a very tall, handsome boy sitting quietly playing with some toys. We both exchanged smiles, and for fear of being caught I came out. The boy followed me out. His scientist parents were apprehensive about our reaction but after realising that we were fine with his presence they allowed him to sit and play with me. Though his physical age was 17, his mental age was just three. That was in the mid-1960s. Cut to 2009. My friend Geeta has a 20-year-old daughter Trupti who suffers from Down’s Syndrome. But Geeta has never hidden her away. From the day her affliction was discovered in 1992, Trupti was made to mix with all of us and lead a socially interactive life. Indian society has matured and this is now getting reflected in the film industry. The Indian film industry, which had so far shied away from showing any form of disabilities, especially neurological or genetic, has suddenly come of age. No doubt the song-dance-melodrama films are still the main staple of the industry but these are getting interspersed with well-made, fun-filled wholesome entertainment stuff with problems encountered in the real world. Hitherto it was taken for granted that only Hollywood film-makers could take risks of making such films. In that industry there is a long list of movies — One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Children of a Lesser God, My Left Foot, Rain Man, A Beautiful Mind and several others. Today’s Indian mainstream films too can boast of having made such films, which have been commercially successful with big star casts acting the main protagonists and without resorting to melodrama nor sounding like a documentary. Maybe the credit of starting this momentum should be given to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the film Black, where his both central characters played by Rani Mukherjee and Amitabh Bachchan had disabilities — Rani was dumb, deaf and blind whereas Bachchan towards the end suffered from Alzheimer’s. The film and the actors went on to win several awards. This was followed by another highly successful film — Taare Zameen Par dealing with dyslexia. Aamir Khan’s home production had a heart-wrenching story of both parents’ and teachers’ inability of understanding or accepting the child’s disabilities. The film heralded a spate of articles, programmes on dyslexia and had parents with such children come forward to talk about their experiences. Then came the Kajol-Ajay Devgan starrer, U, Me Aur Hum, where Kajol’s character suffered from Alzheimer’s. Though the film was not as commercially successful as the others, the superb acting by Kajol got a huge round of applause and even in remote towns of India Alzheimer’s started getting accepted as an ailment. The film Bhool Bhulaiyaan, which dealt with multiple personality disorder, had Akshay Kumar’s psychiatrist treating Vidya Balan troubled by multiple personalities disorders. This film drew a huge crowd but then it was a real entertainment film. The latest to hit the screen is Paa, a A.B. Corp film directed by R.Balki of Cheeni Kum fame, where Amitabh Bachchan’s character suffers from a rare genetic disorder known as progeria in which children start aging five to six times faster. That means a 10-year-old child will have the appearance of a 50- or 60-year-old, and generally doesn’t live beyond the age of 12 or 13. Bachchan senior plays the afflicted child Auro. And his son Abhishek Bachchan plays his reel father. ‘Don’t make a mistake. Paa is a fun-filled family film where a highly intelligent child is afflicted by progeria. We neither wanted to make a documentary or a socially relevant film. We wanted to just show a beautiful father-son and family relationship with slightly difficult circumstances without resorting to too much of a melodrama,’ said Abhishek in one of the interviews talking about the film. That is the plus points of these films. There are moments of poignancy but they don’t make you go for that handkerchief. Especially Balki whose forte in dialogues writing is superb and he has stars whose timing of delivering their lines are so perfect that the film is transferred to a different level. Ten minutes into Paa and I forgot that I was watching the 67-year-old Amitabh acting a 12-year-old teenager. He acts like any other audacious teenager who likes to have his own way, but with the safety of his family as his anchor. A new entrant to Indian films will never know that Abhishek with his absolutely controlled acting in reality is Amitabh’s son. His reaction to the young Auro is of any indulgent father. In one of those innumerable interviews that the father-son duo has been giving after the success of the film, Bachchan Sr. said, ‘We are actors put together in a story of a make-believe world. The film shows the relationship between the father and son in a unique way.’ Though 2009 may end with Paa, the new-year promises many more films with such afflictions forming the story background. The first of the lot to hit the screen will be Karan Johar’s directorial film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, My Name is Khan. Shah Rukh known for his romantic hits plays a man with Asperger’s syndrome. The main story is about the treatment of Muslims in the United States after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Actor-turned-director Nana Patekar too has taken up similar subject where he is a launching his son who in the film suffers from autism. So more and more people are jumping on this bandwagon of showcasing realistic story lines, and fortunately as audiences too have matured these Indian films with bankable actors are becoming commercially successful also. One of the reasons why such films are being accepted and are making moollah is that both the directors and actors concerned do their homework well, do a lot of research and conduct workshops with actors to train them in the correct mannerisms of the afflicted persons with the result the films don’t look foolhardy. The characters don’t caricature the role but actually appear to be living it. And therein lies the new mantra of the maturity of Indian films. |

Romancing younger men on screen Romancing younger men on screen seems to be in vogue in Bollywood. Though ageing heroes have romanced young actresses for long, the trend seems to be reversing these days. Dil Bole Hadippa : Bollywood veteran Rani Mukherjee has a much younger Shahid Kapur as the male lead. Bachna Ae Haseeno : Bipasha was placed against the bollywood’s cute bachaa Ranbir Kapoor Aa Dekhen Zara : In Aa Dekhen Zara, the Bongshell worked with the one-film-old Neil Nitin Mukesh. Wake up sid : Ranbir Kapoor is one of the fresh young stars of Bollywood, but in Wake Up Sid he is paired opposite the much elder Konkona Sen Sharma. Kismat Konnection : Chocolate boy Shahid Kapur who also starred with an older Vidya Balan in Aziz Mirza's Kismat Konnection Why Not???? If older men can romance and be paired with younger women, why shouldn't it be the same for actresses. Don’t worry beauties younger actors are there to help http://movies.indiainfo.com/article/091213...een/642484.html |

Stars in your eyes... December 14, 2009 By Debashine Thangevelo IT WAS A FIRST FOR ... It is a fact that Rani Mukherjee is a versatile actress. Her portrayal of a man in Anurag Singh's rom-com Dil Bole Haddipa gained her renewed respect, especially from her co-stars, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. I guess that just made her one of the guys! |

Quick TV premiere for 'Dil Bole Hadippa' Sony Entertainment Television Asia will be premiering the blockbuster movie 'Dil Bole Hadippa', barely four months after its cinema release. The Yash Raj Film production, which stars Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee will be shown on Sunday 24th January at 20:00. The film released at cinemas in the late part of September this year. |

THE AWESOME TWOSOME Rani Mukherjee, Vidya Balan to star in a movie on the Jessica Lall murder case Aamir director Rajkumar Gupta, who won accolades for his unconventional maiden film featuring television's blue-eyed boy Rajeev Khandelwal, is gearing up for his next film with UTV. This one is tentatively called No One Killed Jessica. And there is some exciting news on his second film's front. A source reveals that two major actresses -- Bong beauty Rani Mukherjee and Paa actress Vidya Balan -- are all set to play the lead roles in the film. The two heroines were earlier supposed to team up in Pradeep Sarkar's Laaga Chunri Mein Daag. Unfortunately, things didn't work out with Vidya then. However, this time the actresses stand a good chance of being reteamed. Apparently, Kareena Kapoor was Gupta's first choice for one of the roles but it didn't work out. The source informs, "Creatively, the cast is finalised, but UTV is still negotiating with the actresses on the money factor. Both the actresses have quoted a very high price. Vidya is to play someone closely affected by the crime, while Rani plays a fiery journalist." Gupta, who is filmmaker Anurag Kashyap's protégé, has revealed in an earlier interview that, No One Killed Jessica is set in Delhi. "Unlike Aamir, this film will have two-three strong female characters. It is inspired by the real life murder of Jessica Lal but it's not entirely based on that," he then said. On being quizzed about Vidya Balan and Rani Mukherjee being the two leading ladies in the film, Gupta revealed reluctantly, "I am in the process of finalising my cast but I won't comment on it now. The film is going on the floors soon and will be produced by UTV. We are going to make a formal announcement very soon." |

Match your dress to your body type Zofeen Maqsood December 17, 2009 Katrina's dresses cinch below her bust, Malaika's dresses are streamlined to create an illusion of height and Rani's hint at cleavage without accentuating it. Match your dress to your body type dress, wrong body Big bosom (Hourglass body) This is considered as the ideal body type as these women have proportionate but often these women who are big on the bust have to dress carefully to avoid looking too bulky on the top. They should also try to shift the focus on their legs to get the right effect. Dress types to choose from These women should accentuate on their positive that is - slim waist and lean legs. They should draw attention away from bigger bottoms and midriff. They can go for flattering necklines. But going too southward can spoil the look for them. The better idea is to go for V neck or square necklines. Wrap styles can work well too. They should look for fabrics that have a slimming effect but are not clingy. They should avoid ornate necklines or blouson styles. Who does it right Rani Mukherjee balances her bust heavy body frame with an asymmetrical dress that gives just a glimpse of a bare shoulder. The body fitting frame on the top, without blatantly revealing the cleavage balances her look. Who gets it all wrong Celina Jaitley in her dare bare halter dress comes across as too much in your face. Seems Jaitley forgot the vital fashion rule of playing it low key to get the sexy effect. Her ample bosom popping out of her southward heading neckline dress spoils her look, making her look like a saucy starlet. A subtle cleavage display could have worked for her better. |

Top ten Bollywood films of the decade 2:24pm Thursday 17th December 2009 http://www.asianimage.co.uk/movies/4803361..._of_the_decade/ It has been decade when Indian cinemas came of age. Film writer Abid Hussain looks back at his personal top ten ten films of the decade in this special feature exclusively for Asian Image. 10. SARKAR (2005). Inspired by Mario Puzo's The Godfather, and Ram Gopal Verma acknowledges this but the story has been adapted to the point where the similarities are hard to pin down. The film focuses on politics and the political heavyweights and their connections to the underworld nexus in Mumbai. It was refreshing to see that both Amitabh and Abhishek have left their monstor egos at the door. Amitabh Bachchan deliberately underplays his character Subhash Nagare (Sarkar) and lets his character speak volumes. Sometimes just a simple stare is enough to send shivers down your spine. Ram Gopal Verma’s films are all unique and always a treat and Sarkar stands heads and shoulders above his many creations. 9. HERA PHERI (2000). A predecessor in the comedy stakes to Munnabhai MBBS and it has to be the first Bollywood film where I actually laughed. Not as slick in style compared to Munnabhai but it makes up for it in abundance by providing a gag a minute. It’s funny and energetic and above all very enjoyable. The comedy itself stems from the economic hardship that the main characters find themselves in and the lengths they will go to alleviate their situation. It’s funny and energetic and above all very enjoyable. Try not to look for a storyline beyond the apparent and ignore the plot holes and the loose script and just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. 8. LAGAAN (2001). Set in the 19th century it tells the story of the simple village-folk struggling to pay off the annual debts (Lagaan) to the British. A course of events leads to a game of cricket between the villagers and the British with the Lagaan as a stake The story is well crafted and director Ashutosh Gowariker captures the beauty and simplicity of rural life in India from that period perfectly. Lagaan also makes it into my personal top ten as it is the only Indian film in my living memory which has effectively crossed over to mainstream (non-Indian) audiences, been accepted and even managed to make its way to the Oscars. It was beautiful setting complimented by some good performances. On top of all that we get a thrilling cricket match where our heroes finally get their own back on those ******** colonialists. Come on everyone felt like that at the end! 7. HUM TUM (2004). The story isn’t too disimilar to the US hit ‘When Harry Met Sally’ but gets athat familiar Indian makeover. By all accounts this film should not have worked but the amazing chemistry between Saif and Rani and the story that spans close to a decade allows the two to slowly (very slowly) analyse love and its many facets. There is nothing new or surprising in this film but Kunal Kohli manages to provide a film that is full of charm and humour (lots of it) and a true romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by all ages. 6. RANG DE BASANTI (2006). The second of three films in our top ten starring Aamir Khan tells of Sue (Alice Pattern) who arrives in New Delhi to begin a documentary. She wants to find out more about about a violent incident in Indian history. Sonia is introduced to Aamir and his friends who lives are intertwined with the story of Jallianwala Bagh, the bombing of parliament house by Bhagat Singh and the hanging of both captives. The screenplay is at once interesting, different and disturbing. The resulting film could have been a mess had the editing not been so skilful and the direction in other less capable hands. Thankfully the result is an engaging, subtle history lesson aimed at the youth with a powerful message. 5. GURU (2007). Directer Mani Ratnam veers off from his trademark love stories set against a political backdrop. The film has a charm and quirkiness that excites you and keeps you engaged right through to the very end. Guru is a story that is gripping and highly inspiring; it shows you that through sheer vision and hard work anything can be achieved. Guru begins life in a rural village in Gujarat, travels to Turkey and returns to Gujarat to begin his own business and finally journeys to Mumbai where Guru’s character is tested and eventually triumphs. Mani Ratnam flawlessly directs and Abhishek Bachchan gives a performance that would humble even his father. Even Aishwarya manages to pull off a decent performance without having to resort to constnt costume changes. 4. OMKARA (2006). Based on Shakespeare’s Othello this is a dark and moody tale which leaves little to the imagination. There is no sugar-coated view or message in this film; it shows the seedier side of human nature as it is with jealousy, power, politics, love, and lust, the order of the day. Masterful storytelling combined with brilliant performances makes this film stand out. The director Vishal Bharadwaj also seems to have done what most directors seem incapable of and that is to get performances of note out of Ajay, Saif, Vivek and Kareena! 3. BLACK (2005). A film that doesn’t centre around couples singing and dancing. Very rarely does Bollywood give us a mainstream film that goes against the grain and aspires to give an entertaining film with intellectual substance and world-class acting. Everything about this film is excellent; each scene is a feast for the eyes and Rani Mukherjee and Amitabh Bachchan both give performances that reach a new career high. Black is inspired by the life of Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan. It tells the story of a deaf and blind girl, Michelle McNally and her teacher, Debraj Sahai. The film sees them both working to gain knowledge and respectability. 2. MUNNA BHAI MBBS (2003). At first glance, Munna Bhai appears to be a run-of-the-mill movie about a gangster with a good heart who gets himself into a situation where he is a bit out of his depth. The story centres around Munna Bhai who is a gangster. His father lives in the village and believes his son to be a doctor. Munnabhai’s father comes to the city to visit his son. Munnabhai respects his father enough to feel ashamed that he is a gangster and sets about laying an elaborate plot where he is to act out the role of doctor during his father’s brief visit. True, it doesn’t sound appealing but this is a comedy movie from Bollywood which is actually funny. Indian cinema churns out comedy films but the majority of them are trash. Munnabhai is a landmark film which shows that comedy can hold its own as a whole movie rather than five minutes light entertainment to fit around the rest of the film. 1. DIL CHAHTA HAI (2001). This might not be everyone’s number one choice but the story of three college graduates making their way through life hit a chord with many Bollywood fans. It tells the story of three friends who graduate from college and the film follows them as they go through their transition into adulthood. We share their highs and lows through work, friendship and love; each has a different perspective on life which leads them off in their respective direction. Surprisingly, it was the directorial debut of Farhan Akhtar who’s attention to detail transformed how Indian films were viewed by the wider movie world. The director was the first to give each of his characters a distinctive look, style of dress, and hairstyle which matched the character, personality and stage in life. Moreover it raised the bar in terms of script and acting and is one of the few benchmark films that popular Hindi cinema has. The dialogue was brilliant and the slick style and quality camerawork made the audience realise that Hindi cinema was capable of rpoducing not only good films but great films |
