Rani Mukherjee & DPL (Dance Premier League) ; Beauty & Talent together

..Rani Mukherjee is the latest bollywood star to be bitten by the telly bug. Anew dance show Hosted by HUSSAIN and SARA KHAN both being famous television Artists of great virtue,is on air and is being shown on SONY. The greatest attraction is Rani Mukherjee who is the judge along with many choreographers.

The best part of the show is Shaimak Davar who is the umpire in the show. The performers on this show are very good and some of them have certain physical problems but they are battling it out with such beautiful Performances that it is not easy for the ordinary audience to make out their problems.

According to the Organizers such a show has never ever been telecast before. There is a real mixture of
Contemporary moves with Indian traditional folk dances. Each contestant is amazingly
talented and is getting better with each episode.

Till now the best performance has been of the “western yoddhas”.They had scripted one whole performance on the suicides of the farmers due to lack of rain, this performance was so mind blowing that those Who have seen it are yet talking about it. This show is unique also as it is a mixture of cricket and bollywood as every Indian is very much attached to both these Areas of fun and entertainment.

Let’s wait and watch till the final episode.

Fab makeovers of B-town hotties

Rani's shed the weight and stepped into minis, in case we hadn't noticed. As Sushmita, Lara and Ayesha also go in for a makeover, we rate the ladies on their style impact.

Rani's svelte sleek avatar
Rani Mukherjee admitted in an interview that she lost eight kgs in 10 months, thanks to a dedicated yoga and gym routine. To complement her slimmer frame she has gone for a poker straight sleek hairstyle and is seen flaunting legs in short skirts like never before.

Rani dares to bare?

Posted Image

Oi oi.. looks like Rani Mukherji is going the Mallika Sherawat way now...
after the siren herself had chosen to stray off her own beaten path, remarks Madhu my Mottu Maid.
Huh? What are you talking about Mots, I demand to know, and she says that she's talking about the way Raniji is dressing up (or would `down' be more appropriate actually?) these days.

According to Mots, ever since she (Rani, not Mottu sillies) lost all those unwanted kilos to wear a bikini for Dil Bole Hadippa! or something such, she's become ultra bold and glam.

Seems Ms Mukherji has filled her wardrobe with hundreds of saris, which she's taken to wearing at every event she attends.

Nah, nothing wrong with that, except that they're too thin and transparent types.

Nothing wrong with that either. But Mots just can't help wondering about Rani's cholis.

She claims that most of Rani's halter-styled blouses, the smallest Ms Mukherji has ever worn, would give a complex to La Sherawat in her covered avatar.

Now, now, I've heard loads about Mallika popping out of her tiny outfits but to hear the same about Rani...
Haaye daiyya!

PULSE RATE PER MINUTE

...THAT'S HOW OUR BOLLYWOOD HOTSHOTS CHARGE EVEN FOR MAKING AN APPEARANCE

Reigning Bollywood queen Katrina Kaif's quick `shake-a-leg' act in Delhi two weeks ago earned her a cool Rs 57 lakh.
For a half-an-hour performance that's big money. But then celebrities don't come cheap, specially in a starstarved country like ours.
All those known and obscure industrialists, who flaunt Bollywood celebs as their friends at their wedding parties and inaugurations, actually shell out bomb to get them... some times for blinkand-miss appearances.

Salman Khan, for instance, "wouldn't budge for anything less than Rs 1 crore," says the actor's manager Alok Mathur.
But, "Hrithik doesn't attend any ordinary bash. And he charges Rs 1.25 crore, even if it's for half-an-hour," reveals Ankur Sagar of Carving Dreams, a celeb management agency. And though Sanjay Dutt "doesn't go to weddings or parties", he does change his mind for figures above "Rs 70 lakh", gives out his secretary Dharam Oberoi.

Not just the men, the leading ladies too quote big figures when it comes to paid appearances. "Aishwarya Rai is tagged at Rs 75 lakh and Rani Mukherji at Rs 35 lakh,"
says Shams Lalji, who works for lensman Atul Kasbekar's celeb management agency, Bling. "Rs 50 lakh is the right amount. She anyway charges Rs 30 lakh for ribbon cutting," gives out Katrina Kaif's manager Sandhya Ramachandran.

Couple tie-ups come even steep. Though Shilpa Shetty charges Rs 40 to 50 lakh per appearance, one can get her "with Raj Kundra for a combined fee of Rs 50 to 60 lakh", says the actress's manager Meeta Jhunjunwala. And Lalji says, "John Abraham and Bipasha Basu f together come for nothing less I than Rs 1 crore," adds Lalji. s For Saif Ali Khan and a Kareena Kapoor together the cost would be Rs 80 lakh.

Not just for bigwigs, paid a show-ups work well even for c ringe actors and newcomers.
n fact, these are an important ource of their income, in bsence of acting assignments. Mahima Choudhary charges Rs 10 to 15 lakh for an appear nce, and Chitrangada Singh harges between Rs 20 to Rs 25 lakh for the same. Most transactions are negotiated by managers and secretaries of stars and are done in cash to evade income tax

Behind the scenes on a dance reality TV show

Tears and drama seem likely to keep the viewers hooked

Amatch is about to commence. The sky is an ominous swirl of dark clouds, but chances of rain interrupting play are unlikely. A sea of people swarm all over the floodlit arena, screaming last minute instructions into giant headsets as the players rehearse their final moves.
I'm on the sets of Sony's new reality show, Dance Premier League (DPL). It's season one, episode five, match number three. The grey sky is the backdrop of the expansive set at RK Studios in Mumbai and the players are contestants from two of the six regional teams caught in a dance-off under strobe lights.

"Look how sweetly Shiamak (Davar) is mingling with some watchmen on stage," someone in the audience observes. "No silly, they're not watchmen. They're dancers in security guard costumes," mutters her friend.

It's the opening shot of the show, and we're awaiting the entry of celebrity judge and `DPL ki Rani' actress Rani Mukherjee. She stands in the wings, adjusting, re-adjusting, re-re-adjusting her hair and Manish Malhotra sari before a mirror, for what seems like an eternity. Chair umpire and choreographer Shiamak Davar flits all over the sets, mingling with the dancers, their coaches and the crew. Suddenly, an invisible voice booms, "Come on people, take your places. We've lost a lot of time already." He read my mind.

"Five, four, three, two, one ROLL!" Amidst cheerleaders and a bandbaaja, Mukherjee who has finally managed to detach herself from the mirror, struts across the stage, beaming and waving to everybody. A few seconds after she steps behind her throne, she asks no one in particular, "Can I sit now?" I don't see anyone responding to this. "Hello, can I sit down?" she repeats a littler louder. Still no response. Ok, maybe her last two films flopped miserably, but will someone accord the lady a little respect? "CAN I SIT NOW?" her husky voice rings out. She sits. I realise she is talking to a voice in her ear that comes from the control room, a voice that instructs her and hosts Hussain Kuwajerwala and Sarah Khan, to do exactly what it demands.
Another interruption "CUT!" What? We just got started! But the sets have to be readied for the first innings by the Western Yodhas. Mukherjee at once reaches for the small mirror kept handy on her judge's table. The hairdresser pops in to frantically brush and spray a tiny segment of her hair to perfection. After nearly 15 minutes, it's time for action, and the Western Yodha's `watchmen' and a girl dance in tandem to a sizzling number.
The dance performance ends and the `real' performances begin. The girl hides her face and is close to tears. The hosts explain she was afflicted with a knee injury during rehearsals. Maybe she took `break a leg' too literally. I can't help but think `sympathy votes.' While Davar admonishes her for risking her health, Mukherjee fawns over her bravery. She calls the three of them down to plant a kiss on their cheeks.
I'm not sure if it was the Voice instructing her to be affectionate, but the seemingly genuine gesture is sure to elicit an "awwww" from audiences at home. I can already envision the slow motion shot with accompanying melancholic background music. Injured participants are an integral part of reality shows.

The Desi Pardesis (the NRI team) perform an inventive Charlie Chaplin routine. After the perform ance, Mukherjee coaxes their coach, choreographer Howard Rosemeyer, to break into an impromptu Chaplin step. At first, he shyly refuses. She coaxes him some more. He agrees reluctantly. But suddenly we cut again as Rosemeyer goes backstage where the crew is waiting for him with a Chaplin moustache and a walking stick. He returns and obediently breaks into a jig. Impromptu indeed.

Scores are given, opinions are expressed. Mukherjee seeks assur ance from Davar about her views.

Davar blows her air kisses. It's been a tight match, but one team has scored a few more runs. Its nearly 8:30 pm and there are two more innings to be played. The cast and crew seem to be as fresh as morning dew even after a gruelling 10 hour shoot. I call it a wrap, rather, the end of my innings.

Dance, Little Lady

PriyankaPereira

Those who know Rani Mukerji well, will vouch for the actor’s irrepressible spirit and her witty one-liners. Even after she has shot for five hours on the stretch at RK Studios, Chembur, for Sony’s Dance Premier League, Mukerji has her humour intact. Dressed in a Manish Malhotra floor-sweeper, looking svelte and oomph-laden, she cracks jokes at the organisers, who are running a tad bit behind schedule. Her small-screen debut seems to have done a world of good for her.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying myself, since it requires me to be spontaneous. For me, it is the dance and its various forms that clearly set the show apart. I have always been very fond of dancing and I couldn’t have chosen a better show to be a part of,” she states proudly, making a mention of all the difficult dances she did in Dil Bole Hadippa and reminiscing about her teenage years, when she loved performing on stage. “We did not have a platform then to be on television, otherwise I would have definitely participated. At least my mom would have made sure I did,” she laughs.

Mukerji, usually a reclusive actor with rare public appearances, says that the show will change that bit about her. “It has made me more accessible,” she agrees, as she sips on some tea. “I get to connect with the masses and interact with people from various backgrounds, which I wouldn’t be able to otherwise. Also, not many people in India go to the theatres to watch a movie. But every household in India is hooked to television. It will help me gain visibility, when I am not doing too many films,” she smiles, even as she takes time out in between breaks to mingle with the crowd. There’s enough bonhomie going for her as she makes small talk with the technicians, jokes around with the crew and breaks into an occasional song.

Mukerji says DPL was a progression from her last venture Dil Bole Hadippa. “It clued me in to cricket terminology really well. If not for the film, I would not have done this show, which is loosely based on the IPL,” she says. After DPL, she wishes to be back on her home ground—the big screen. “I have been reading too many scripts of late, but not signed any project as yet,” she says.

Rani on a fun ride
Sneha May Francis chats with Rani Mukherjee about love, life, Bollywood and beyond.

Sneha May Francis Published: 00:00 October 29, 2009

Her signature husky voice greets me on the other end of the telephone line. I get a sense of her on-screen persona when she strikes up a fun conversation almost immediately. In fact, she takes my side over the publicist's when I mention the ban on personal questions. "Ask me absolutely anything your heart desires," she quips, oozing a certain amount of warmth that's not very common among Bollywood's glitterati. And it's this spunk, to fight the norm, that gives her an edge over her dolled-up competitors, making Mukherjee a true star.

I wonder if it's nervousness after returning to the big screen from a sabbatical that prompts her to put up a confident front for the media. But minutes into our chat, I'm assured that this powerhouse performer doesn't need to thrill the media to win over an audience.

"If you are sincere and work diligently, there's nothing that can stop you from getting more work. I think success is perceived differently by the media. For people like me there's no dearth of work," asserts the confident actress.

Despite stepping back from the spotlight after Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, she convinces me that there was no real gap in her professional life. In fact, the entire period was dedicated to grooming herself for her latest Bollywood project - Dil Bole Hadippa. "For the past year I've been working on Dil Bole Hadippa because the film demanded so much time. I didn't know to play cricket and I had to train for six months, so during this time I couldn't sign any project. Six months later, we started filming. Once I finished shooting, the Mumbai cinema strike crept in, leaving no scope for other offers," she says.

But she's quick to accept that despite being among the top performers, her unlucky run at the box office with her last three films has left an impact on her. She has no qualms about admitting that she'll go to any extent to reclaim her top title, which explains why she has worked so hard to get fit. "I had to be in better shape to play a cricketer. I didn't want to look out of shape while portraying a sportsperson. I did a lot of yoga and weight training - it worked wonders." And she hopes her new toned look will win some future projects as well. "I'd like to do an action film next because that's the only genre that I haven't tapped into," she adds.

And despite taking a break from acting for almost a year, the media still cashed in on her personal life, with alleged link-ups making top news. The actress, however, points out that there's no man in her life at the moment.

"Please tell your readers that they can send me their proposals. Not that I'm going to accept them now, but I'm single and ready to mingle."

However, there's a sudden dip in her tone when we touch on how she tackles bad media publicity. "I usually ignore it for a long time. However, when my fans get affected then I feel disappointed."

Her infectious and fun streak reappears when she marks me as the hundred and first person to quiz her about her ‘exclusive' bond with Yash Raj Films, but quickly disputes any truth to such allegations. "No actor sticks to any banner. We actors are like beggars waiting for a great role. We are so greedy that we'll jump at the opportunity to get a good role. So it just depends on whether other film studios offer me a great role or not."

However, the Bengali beauty accepts that box office success takes precedence over critical acclaim. "I think box office success is important since it determines whether a lot of people have watched my film. For me, my audience is number one. Of course critical acclaim is vital, as it pushes more people to go to the cinema."

Looking at her careful choices, I'm not surprised to learn that she hasn't signed on any projects at the moment. "Right now I'm listening to a lot of scripts. What really excites me today is not the run-of-the-mill characters. To crack a nut like me, I need someone like Veer (her character in Dil Bole Hadippa) to excite me. Actually, I'm looking for a role that the audiences will enjoy watching."

With such foresight and determination, we only hope her next movie will be shown to packed houses and give her the much desired push to the top slot. Until then, she'll continue to rule our hearts!

Hadippa Days

Rani for Dil Bole Hadippa...

"There are three reasons why I picked this film. Firstly, my fans have been complaining that I've been crying a lot in my films, so I grabbed this opportunity so I could make them laugh! Secondly, it gave me the challenge of playing a man. And thirdly I got to play a sport."

Playing a man...

"I don't think it's difficult to play a man, because they are really cute."

Shahid Kapur...

"...is charming and an absolute delight to work with. He's very hard-working, sincere and focused. And that's why I like him. He's a fabulous dancer and I had a great time performing with him."

Shades of Rani...

"I'm present in all my characters. You can't take me away or alienate me from any character."

Rani's pick

Films

Right now, it's got to be Dil Bole Hadippa, Dil Bole Hadippa, Dil Bole Hadippa

One of the highlights of the IIFA charity dinner was the Koffee with Karan Show. Shilpa Shetty, Riteish Deshmukh and Katrina Kaif were diplomatic. But Anil Kapoor more than compensated, writes Jyoti Kalsi.

Anil Kapoor entertained the audience with some witty and cheeky answers to Karan's questions. Here are some that the audience particularly enjoyed:

Which top Bollywood heroines would you like to see in a catfight?

Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee ? because they just love each other.

Hussain & Sara- ‘Hum Tum’ Conversations Right from the DPL Studios!

==============================

Hussain: Be it high fashion blouses or designer sarees or her off shoulder dresses.. She looks lovely in them and carries them with aplomb. Is it any wonder then that she gets the maximum applause and catcalls when she enters the studio? She is none other than DPL ki Rani …Rani Mukherjee! In fact every contestant is trying to grab her attention! Every contestant wants ‘the last dance’ with her…

Sara: in fact its you who wants to dance with her… jab dekho tab flirt karte rehte ho…uff! Men will be men!

Hussain: lagta hain jalne ki buh aarahi hain kahin se….hehe!

Sara: waaaaaah! Why would I be jealous (looks angry and irritated)

Hussain: hehe! Hey! I am kidding …let’s not fight ok?

Sara: ok let’s talk about the show Hussain…you are such an attention-seeker!

Hussain: hum hain hi aise…smart, talented, handsome aur…

Sara: boring hehe!

Hussain: wah!

Sara: ok ok…now can we proceed?

Hussain: ladies first!

Sara: thanks. For a change you are acting like a true gentleman

Hussain: ok now…as they say “habits die hard...”

Sara: Prashant and Kartik, two brothers who are part of the Western Yodhas team performed brilliantly! I mean they parents must be so proud of them

Hussain: right!

Sara: unfortunately their mother is in coma for the past nine months after an accident..

Hussain: but then…she will be really proud of them...

Sara: yes of course…

Hussain: acha there is one more important thing I want to share..

Sara: what?

Hussain: All those who were skeptical about Rani's choice as the judge of DPL must now eat their words. All the choreographers on DPL agree that Rani makes valid points and comes up with an altogether viewpoint that sometimes even they miss out on!

Sara: sau aane sacch baat kahi!

Hussain: (smiles …looks surprised…for a change Sara forgets to fight and praises Hussain)

Sara: you know something...

Hussain: what?

Sara: Shiamak is not just a very nice person but also extremely emotional and caring. There is this contestant Shashank who always wanted to get properly trained in dance but due to financial reasons, he couldn’t…And now can you believe this? Shiamak just walks on to the stage hugs him and offers him to get trained in dance at his academy

Hussain: Wow! That’s really sweet of him..

Sara: I think he should offer to teach dance to one more person..

Hussain: who?

Sara: someone who has a left foot…

Hussain: everyone has a left foot..Don’t you know? (Teasing her again..)

Sara: uff! I mean a person who doesn’t know how to dance well

Hussain: oh aisa bolo na…that you want to learn to dance!

Sara: wah! By the way, I was referring to you…

Hussain: what do you mean…I don’t know how to dance?

Sara: hehe!

Hussain: blah blah blah…

Sara: blah blah blah…

And the fight continues…hmm maybe next week you will see them fighting… we mean on the dance battle…Dance Premier League Becomes just more interesting! Be there Fri-Sat at 8.30pm only on Sony Entertainment Television- Dance Premier League-Bcoz its Izzat Ka Sawaal

What it takes to be star-shaped

http://www.livemint.com/2009/11/16214308/W...shape.html?pg=1

A well-toned body doesn’t come easy. Qualified fitness trainers and tailor-made regimens help Bollywood’s leading ladies look the part

Blessy Augustine

(left to right) Calisthenic curves: For Vidya Balan’s curvaceous but toned look, her trainer recommended exercises that use body weight for resistance. Athletics-inspired: Rani Mukherjee’s sporting role called for eating every 2 hours, plus extra cardio and weights. Confined shape-up: Floor-based exercises were prescribed to help Shamita Shetty stay fit during the Bigg Boss season. Beach body: Interval cardio training ensured Lara Dutta’s bikini-friendly belly.

Rani Mukherjee’s slimmer specs

The brief: Improving Rani Mukherjee’s thighs, abdomen and arms to get her in great shape for Dil Bole Hadippa!

The plan: Satyajit Chaurasia, a personal trainer who had earlier worked with Aamir Khan for Ghajini and has worked with Mukherjee for the last five years, made her follow the usual cardio and weight training (the treadmill, dumb-bells, lunges, crunches and squats), but this time for a longer period. The regime involved exercising an hour and a half to 2 hours, five days a week. The routine was divided into 15 minutes of cardio exercises, such as working out on a treadmill or cycling, and 15 minutes of weight training. The best way to deal with a flabby stomach in Mukherjee’s case, according to Chaurasia, was to alternate between crunches and leg raises (front and side), doing each 25 times.

Chaurasia laid stress on eating right, instructing Mukherjee to eat every 2 hours. “This,” he says, “is better for your metabolism and keeps your energy levels constant.” Mukherjee’s diet involved eating lots of fruits, salads and egg whites. She was asked to avoid red meat and deep-fried foods. “However, I allow her to indulge herself twice a week. A diet isn’t a punishment. You need to be able to eat food you like,” says Chaurasia.

Stay-fit tip: Exercise every day for at least 30 minutes—whatever simple exercises one can manage at home or in a park.

Yes Prime Minister

Now Rajni wants to be allowed to go early today. Kyun? Kyunki, she says that Canadian Prime Minister, Mr Steven Harper, is in town and she wants to meet him. Just like everybody who is somebody in tinsel town and gaon wants to meet him. First in the list is naturally Akshay Kumar, our International Khiladi.
Yesterday morn ing, Mr Harper introduced him as the Indian Ambassador for the 2010 Olympic Games that Canada will be hosting.

Next on the list were the Kapoor brothers, Randhir and Rishi, who will meet the Canadian PM at RK Studio. I don't know how this fits his Indian itinerary, but Canada's Pradhan Mantri will be Pradhan Mantri will be visiting the sets of Dance Premiere League, which is being shot at the landmark studio.

Needless to say, Rani Mukherji will also get her fifteen more seconds of fame when she also meets him. But then, does it look like I care about Queen Mukherji?

Canadian Prime Minister visits DPL sets

There to boost the morale of the Desi Pardesi team None of these Canadian kids have ever met their Prime Minister and they were really excited

Rachana Dubey rachana.dubey@hindustantimes.com

For a 15-minute visit of the Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, and first lady, Laurien Harper, RK Studio at Chembur is packed with police and security personnel. Bags are frisked at least three times and inside, more technical checks continue.
The Desi Pardesi team are rehearsing the `Banthan chali...' number with choreographer Howard.
Randhir Kapoor arrives and sits quietly in a corner. Kids from Shiamak Davar's dance troupe are also seated, clutching the Indian tri-colour.

The NRI team is the only one out of the six competing teams who have a performance scheduled as six out of eight members on this team are from Canada. "None of these Canadian kids have ever met their Prime Minister and they are really excited," says choreographer Howard. "The other teams are preparing their acts that will be canned in a day or two.
We have less time for rehearsals but we're confident of pulling it off." The Prime Minister agreed to visit the sets also because of Howard and umpire Shiamak Davar who has several dance schools in Canada. A source from the channel confirms this: "Shiamak travels to Toronto often."

Rani Mukherji, the Queen of DPL, is absent from the scene. Enquiries reveal that she only shoots on Tuesdays. The PM's visit is duly recorded and would be aired in parts during one of the episodes this weekend.

Sweet and sexy

By SHEELA NARAYANAN

YOU know you're a star when women demand that you peel off your shirt or watch your movie - the same one - three times in a night.

Shahid Kapoor, 28, has had both happen to him.

Last week, the rising star of the Hindi movie business was shooting a beach scene in Thailand for his yet untitled new film when a group of female fans showed up and clamoured for him to take his vest off.

While Shah Rukh Khan would have had a witty comeback and Salman Khan would have possibly obliged, Shahid who recently went topless in Kaminey and showed off his gym-honed pectorals in Dil Bole Hadippa was embarrassed. So much so, he had to retreat to his vanity van till the fans were escorted away by the security guards.

As for that Shahid-movie marathon... it happened right here in Singapore. But the woman in question has threatened me with bodily harm if I reveal her identity. She did, however, follow up that warning with a gooey-eyed request for an autographed picture of Shahid. So much for her tough-gal image!

Incidents like these only prove that this dimple-cheeked and buff actor is indeed a superstar in the making, one that appeals to fans of all ages.

Student Jaspreet Kaur, 14, adores him for his boyish good looks and for his acting skills. "He looks natural on screen," she said. Another fan who drools over Shahid is 35-year-old tutor Sujata Krishnan, who thinks he can be the next Shah Rukh. "He is good looking, dances really well and has loads of charisma," she said.

This year has been good to him, with the movie gods sprinkling quite a bit of stardust on the young actor despite his position in Bollywood, sandwiched between the veteran stars like the Khans and youngsters like Ranbir Kapoor - very much the flavour of the month in Tinseltown right now - in the popularity and box-office stakes.

His films are doing well and he is getting critical acclaim as an actor, more so after Kaminey where he played morally diverse twins with different speech impediments (only in Bollywood).

Local film distributor Arun Pala of Jalan Distributors, who brings in Yash Raj movies, told tabla! that Dil Bole Hadippa made over $100,000 when it was released in four cinemas in Singapore.

Mr Pala said: "There are two people who are the forerunners to take over the Khans - that is Shahid and Ranbir. There is no one else."

Shahid's scoring in the looks department too, with those dimples and sweet smile weakening the knees that his chiselled body - lean and ripped compared to the over-muscled look of six years ago when he debuted in Ishq Vishq - can't conquer. And as far as his dancing skills are concerned, the verdict is that he is better than the 35-year-old Hrithik Roshan. Enough said.

In her blog on the Hindustan Times website, editor of its Sunday magazine Poonam Saxena declared Shahid to be one of the stars to take over the mantle of Bollywood megastars from the Khans - Shah Rukh and Aamir to be precise.

She wrote: "He's good-looking. He still looks very boyish but not as much as he did in his early films. You only have to watch Kaminey to see how different and "non-chocolate boy" he can appear.

"He's charismatic. He has an arresting screen presence and can hold a frame perfectly. If there's a tight close-up of his on the big screen (and there were many in Dil Bole Hadippa), you are compelled to keep looking at him. He's easily the best dancer in Mumbai - even better than Hrithik Roshan. And best of all, he can act. Jab We Met was an out-and-out Kareena film, but Shahid stood out with a fine performance. Dil Bole Hadippa is a total Rani Mukherji vehicle - the film was made to showcase her talent and looks to audiences all over again, but once again, Shahid held his own."

Other industry watchers seem to share that sentiment.

The Times Of India's Bollywood editor Meen Iyer said: "Shahid is one of the most promising actors on the block. With Vivaah and Jab We Met he established himself as a very good actor and a star. Now with Kaminey, he is in the A-league; he has age on his side and the fact that he is a super- duper dancer and competent actor makes him a good bet for a reigning Hindi film hero.

"This is the most exciting phase of Shahid's career. If he chooses his future assignments with care, he will always be in a comfortable position."

That's a far cry from his quiet entry into the business via tiny roles in music videos and advertisements. Having enrolled in the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts, his first screen presence was as a back-up dancer in the 1999 film Taal which starred Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor.

The son of actors Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem, Shahid finally made his acting debut in 2003 with Ishq Vishq. The role, of a love sick college boy, got him three Best Male Debut awards: From Filmfare, Star Screen and the Indian International Film Academy Awards in Singapore in 2004.

This was followed by two movies in 2004, Fida and Dil Maange More. The first garnered him critical acclaim while the second flopped, which was the theme of his year at the box office in 2005. He did get some good mentions for Shikar, the first time he demonstrated that he was more than just dimples and muscles.

Things slowly took a turn for the better when he starred in the 2006 film with Kareena Kapoor - they dated for three years, more about that later - in 36 China Town which was followed by a Priyadarshan-helmed comedy, Chup Chup Ke, which did average business at the box office.

But it was his turn as the sensitive Prem in Vivah which earned him a nomination at most of the movie awards. His next hit was also with Kareena, Jab We Met in 2007, which saw the end of their three-year relationship.
Then came Kaminey, Vishal Bharadwaj's dark thriller about gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops which critics believe has propelled Shahid into the big league.

NDTV's consulting editor Anupama Chopra said: "This is the role - or roles - of a lifetime and Shahid, best known for innocuous chocolate-boy romances, sinks his teeth into it. Kaminey does for him what Omkara did for Saif Ali Khan. A star has evolved into an actor."

That said, when it comes to Bollywood, nothing screams star more than being tabloid fodder... and Shahid has dominated more than his share of headlines for his relationship with Kareena. Rivers of ink have flowed into charting their dating exploits... like the 2005 mobile phone photos of their passionate lip lock at a club which were circulated and later publishedin a Mumbai tabloid.

His serial co-star dating in his post-Kareena days is also getting tabloid attention. Vidya Balan, his co-star in Kismet Konnection, revealed recently that they were indeed dating and had a bad break-up. He was also linked with co-star Priyanka Chopra though both actors denied that they were dating. And now the grapevine is shaking with talk that he is dating his current co-star, Anouskha Sharma.

And what about the man himself? How is he reacting to the attention from the media and fans?
In an interview with NDTV, Shahid said he is not obsessed about media-driven moulds that he is supposed to occupy.

"It's great to own a space. Then you find another space, you occupy that. I am attracted to anything different. I like to do anything that makes me uncomfortable. Once in a while you have to mix it up with something new," he said.

"The various tags have been given to me since the success of Kaminey. And I am very happy to hear them, but the most important thing is to keep doing good work and surprising the audience every now and then."

Humble words. Perhaps that's just one more reason for those female fans to keep using terms like sweet and sexy. I'm adding one more to their collection: Superstar.

Anchor Sara Khan & DPL Rani charm audiences with their singing

Hussain: good morning Sara!

Sara: a very good morning to you!

Hussain: so tonight it’s going to be fun…:-)

Sara: yes of course… a lot is there is store for our audience

Hussain: yes with someone singing on a dancing show. it just gets better!

Sara: (blushes) whose going to sing?

Hussain: tu aur kaun?

Sara: ya I mean like woh toh aise hi…that’s coz Rani Mukherjee requested me na

Hussain: yes she had quite a few praises for you..

Sara (happily) yes! *wink wink*

Hussain: she was just being nice…I understand (quite dramatically)

Sara: (angrily) waaaaaah!

Hussain: okay I admit…you sing well…infact you’ve done it before on Dus Ka Dum too...

Sara: (quite surprised) thanks!

Hussain: you know something Sara?

Sara: what?

Hussain: I was just wondering.. Vishal is a like a dream dancer. What makes him even more special is the fact that he is a deaf- mute boy. Yet, it is fascinating to watch him perform the most intricate moves without missing a beat!

Sara: well I will tell you this and also like to share this with our audience- Vishal touches the speakers and the dance floor to catch the beat and rhythm. And then he can dance like nobody else because he is not dependent on hearing the music – so he can go on even when the music has long stopped during rehearsals.

Hussain: OMG!

Sara: isn’t it really inspiring?

Hussain: yes it is! At the same time he is a big entertainer and a charmer

Sara: he has completely floored Rani! Hehe!

Hussain: so for now... We say alvida…khuda hafiz… Meet you tonight at 8.30pm!

Sara: On Dance Premier League
