Will Rani dance as well?

The launch of Sony Entertainment Television’s Dance Premier League was a starry affair. Well, the queen of hearts Rani Mukerji, looking stunning in a sari, was there. Shiamak Davar was all smiles. So was Sara Khan, who came in for a while, but left soon as she had to go for her shoot. One by one, the various teams from different zones danced on their individual zonal songs. Shiamak came up on the stage later and said that he was very excited about the show as he’s not seen good dancing on the small screen for a long time. Rani, who came up on stage and officially kicked off the show, revealed that the reason she is part of this show is because it’s a perfect combo of dance and cricket, specially after she’d worked in a film like Dil Bole Hadippa. When somebody asked her if she would be displaying her dancing skills on the show as well, she cheekily replied, “I don’t think the channel can afford that!”

DPL Hadippa for RANI

Rani Mukerji makes her TV debut with Dance Premiere League, a reality show on SonyRani Mukerji’s reasons for being a part of Dance Premiere League is rather interesting. “I wasn’t planning to do television at all, let alone Dance Premiere League (DPL). But after doing Dil Bole Hadippa where I got to play cricket and dance my heart out, I think DPL is the natural extension,” says the actress who’s judging the dance reality show. TV may be a logical extension for her as is the case with several film celebrities. But Rani wasn’t Sony’s first choice.
The channel was keen on having ex-Bollywood diva and dancer par excellence Madhuri Dixit as judge on the show. But when Madhuri opted out, the channel approached Rani who after some convincing agreed to be in the jury’s chair. Informed sources say that while Rani liked the show’s concept and dates are not an issue with her either, she gave a nod to do the show after being convinced about its pan-India appeal. The idea was sold to her as a big ticket debut on television in a show that’s a big zonal level dance competition mentored by the likes of Salman Khan, Bipasha Basu and Kareena Kapoor. “We needed an actress with a pan-India appeal and not a glamour queen to judge the show. After Madhuri opted out Rani was our obvious choice,” says a source in Sony.

When asked if she came two hours late for the DPL media event, how long did it take her to decide on doing the show, the queen of hearts smiled and said, “You mean days, minutes and seconds?” She brushed aside the question in a lighter vein but admitted that DPL is a great opportunity for her to associate with a property that’s has league cricket format. However, she quickly clarified that she hasn’t signed DPL so that she could buy an IPL team. “I watch a lot of television,” she confessed but refused to divulge what she watches or which her favourite shows are. “I am not going to tell you which channel/s I watch. But thanks to Sony, I am happy to be part of DPL,” she added.

Call it a coincidence or whatever, two days before Rani formally announced her decision to do DPL, Sony sent out a press release announcing an exclusive agreement with Yash Raj Films (YRF) for producing exclusive fiction and non-fiction content for the channel. Commenting on the announcement, Man Jit Singh, CEO of Sony said, “We are thrilled and delighted to be working with Aditya Chopra and the talented team at YRF to create exceptional television content which will be contemporary and engaging for audiences in India.” Sony and YRF have a long standing business relationship but the timing of the announcement was quite interesting. Incidentally, while Rani had said yes to DPL, the contract between her and Sony was signed only two days before the said media event. Whether Rani has come in a packaged deal for Sony as part of the content agreement with YRF or vice versa is difficult to infer but things seem to have moved in complete synergy.

Rani is a trained classical Odissi dancer and has sizzled the silver screen with variety of dance performances which cover the whole spectrum of dance forms - classical, contemporary, folk - probably everything. But no actor is a technical expert on dance which is best left to the dance guru. Rani said she is passionate about dance but is not a technical person to judge toes, hands, fingers and other body parts positions. “That’s Shiamak’s job,” she said, adding, “But I am going to be a good judge. I am the voice of common man.” Pointing towards the participants she said, “I love you all. If you dance well and win my heart I will be a generous judge.”

She would not say whether she will perform on the show or at least is not sure about it. But Rani is glad about making her debut on television. “It’s a great medium that gives me an opportunity to communicate with 50 million people.” She has got the figure right. In 70 million cables and satellite homes, Sony reaches more than 42 million households. Its prime time is sampled by about 50 million viewers. But how many people will sample the show that targets regional pride remains to be seen.

10 Questions

Rani Mukherjee

After a long hiatus, she’s back with a new look in the film Dil Bole Hadippa
Lata Khubchandani Interviews Rani Mukherjee

You’ve lost a lot of weight.

Yes, this film required me to have a toned body in order to look like a boy.

And you learnt cricket too.

I went through extensive training for about six months and you’ll see how good I am.

Who did you train with?

This great coach, Anjali Pandharkar, who used to be a former player in the Indian team.

Was having to learn cricket daunting?

That was actually the most exciting reason why I signed the film. Me playing a boy and me playing cricket...these were the two things that got me hooked to the script. Films where I get to learn something new are exciting.

How difficult was it?

It was difficult physically. I had to look athletic and toned to be a player. Then the whole process of gluing the beard to my face each day and living with it. That was tough!

How was it working with the new director Anurag Singh?

Anurag is very funny but he’d decided to be serious throughout the making of the film. I knew him before so it used to amuse me.

And Shahid?

As an actor, I think he’s at his best, he’s matured and was amazing. Also, the love and respect we share added to our comfort levels.

We heard your were unhappy with the shooting etc....

They were rumours.

How happy are you with the film?

I’m very happy with my role and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing it. From not being able to hold a bat to hitting sixes; the discussions on the look for my character which today people call me and say is “so cute”.

Will the film surprise us?

See, you’re going to watch a film called Dil Bole Hadippa so you know what you’re getting into. It’s a fun film. You’ll smile, you’ll laugh, you’ll move with the characters.

‘YES, I NEED TO MARRY’

But Rani Mukerji swears she’s still single... despite the rumours about Aditya Chopra

OMAR QURESHI Times News Network

When Rani Mukerji was in Delhi recently, the buzz was more about her looks than her last movie, Dil Bole Hadippa!. She’s looking like a million bucks, whispered a few. Some called her B’wood’s new bombshell. A few fans, some girls, waited in the hope of getting to speak to her to know her diet chart. As for Rani, she wore a content and happy look. “It’s great. I’ve worked quite hard to get till here, which makes it all the more important that the compliments keep coming,” she smiled.
ON HER ‘I-WILL-TALK-WHEN-I-WANT-TO’ STANCE: I haven’t changed a bit over the years. But journalism has changed a lot. It’s not my nature to take calls from the media and talk each time I get an SMS about any issue. If it’s something that makes sense to me, I’d probably answer, but not when I’m busy working or spending time with my family.
ON PEOPLE REFERRING TO DBH AS HER ‘COMEBACK FILM’ : They’re probably trying to use the phrase ‘she’s reinvented herself’. But they end up using ‘comeback’. Which is strange because ‘comeback’ is a phrase used for actresses who get married, have babies and come back; and none of the two are happening in my life.
ON RUMOURS OF HER GETTING MAR RIED: When the media write stories about my marriage, I feel really funny and strange. They keep linking me with a certain person. And they’ve been proclaiming that I’m getting married for over last three years. Every six months they decide on a venue and a date. But the date keeps shifting, simply because it’s unsubstantiated. And the media keeps passing it on, like a relay race. ON ADITYA CHOPRA: I’m not thinking about marriage at all. I’m focussing on my work. There are so many things I want to do. Not that marriage will stop me from doing films. If I’ve found a person with whom I can spend the rest of my life, yes, I need to marry. Today, I don’t think that it’s about the biological clock at all. Marry when you’re ready is the mantra. But I’m single, yaar. Can I shout that out?
ON TALK THAT HER ATTEMPT TO ‘PATCH UP’ SALMAN WITH SRK, ON SALMAN’S TV SHOW, UPSET BOTH OF THEM: Not true. I don’t get into anybody’s life. I’m too caught up with my own life. They’re my friends and I share a great relationship with them, but I prefer steering clear of controversies.
ON BUZZ THAT NOT TOO MANY ACTRESSES SAY NICE THINGS BEHIND HER BACK: I can’t relate to these things. I’ve genuinely not bitched about anybody behind their back. The fact is that if an actress has made a name for herself, it says a lot about her. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be in this industry where people are ready to pull you down. So, I respect every actress simply because they must have something to be able to make a name for themselves.
ON HER SLIM NEW AVATAR: It took six months of yoga and weight training. These days, it’s very important to be fit and it’s through Hadippa that I’ve learnt what it means to eat healthy. You have to eat right and not stop eating to lose weight. ON BEING CALLED A YRF HEROINE: I’m lucky to be working with a banner like theirs but at the same time, I am open to anything different and challenging that comes my way. As an actor, the role comes first.

Rani loves the Bhansalis too much to clarify!

TNN 16 October 2009, 12:00am IST

It was a story in a city tabloid that set tongues wagging about Rani Mukerji. Rani Mukerji More Pics

And it spoke about Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his sister Bela, being upset with the Queen Bee for not doing Bela’s film with Shahid.

The story quoted anonymous sources, stating that Bela’s film was also supposed to be called Hadippa. But alleged that Rani didn’t do the film and then next thing the Bhansalis saw was that Rani’s next film was titled Dil Bole Hadippa. When we spoke to the beautiful actress, she said she didn’t want to “stoop to the level of these sources”, but eventually went on to tell us exclusively; “I’m very uncomfortable answering this one. Simply because I don’t do clarifications of stories in various papers. And, I’m extremely fond of Sanjay and Bela. What Bela wanted to do with me was Charulata with Shahid and another heroine, and I’m excited about that. But she wanted to make a quicker film with Adnan Sami.

So my film was put on the backburner. As for any title talk and casting issues, that’s always a discussion between producers. Anyway, I had a nice laugh over this ‘anonymous’ source, because no amount of anonymity can strain what I share with SLB and Bela.” And considering she’s getting hip hip hurrays for her performance as Veer and the sexy Veera, Rani can afford to smile.

There are no problems with Sanjay Dutt: Akshay Kumar

Mumbai, Oct 16 (IANS) Akshay Kumar is tired of replying to queries about his so-called rivalry with “Blue” co-star Sanjay Dutt. Setting the record straight, he says this is a figment of someone’s imagination and they don’t have any problems whatsoever with each other.

“Please, in this forum, let me state this for perhaps the last time ever - ‘There are no problems between Sanjay Dutt and me,” Akshay told IANS.

Since the shooting of “Blue” commenced around a year ago, there was talk of tension between the two stars.

“Yeh sab bekaar ki baatein hain (all this is ridiculous talk). People can imagine something and start writing about anything that comes to their mind. We live in times when such unnecessary gossip makes headlines.

“In fact, I went for ‘Mata Ki Chowki’ (prayer function) at his place. Would I have done that had there been any problems between us?” asked the actor who is currently shooting for “Houseful”.

Akshay and Sanjay haven’t worked in a film together for a long time. Their last release was director Raj N. Sippy’s “Amaanat”, which had incidentally released Oct 14 in 1994. Now, after exactly 15 years, the two actors are seen again in “Blue”.

What took them so much time to patch up?

“What patch up?” asked Akshay in an exasperated tone. “Rani Mukerji has been around for 13 years. Her first film was ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat’ (1996). Still, both of us have never worked together. Does it mean that we were having a rivalry of sorts and hence would require some kind of patch-up to prove to the world that everything is fine between us?”

He is also happy to declare that Sanjay is the hero of the film and he is the villain.

“That’s the fact. He is not just a hero but also has a heroine (Lara Dutta) opposite him. On the other hand, I have sharks as my leading ladies. I don’t mind though. It’s still better than having none at all. Remember, in ‘Hera Pheri’, Suniel Shetty had Tabu while I was without a heroine,” joked Akshay.

Isn’t he bothered about the fact that he won’t be hogging all the limelight?

“It is not always the matter of footage. It’s about how far you can indeed go in the role that you get to play in the film. You can be a villain and still make an impact. I have just followed Tony’s vision here. Whatever he asked me to do, I did it. If ‘Blue’ works (and I am positive it will), all credit goes to Tony. He has done a tremendous job.”

Also starring Katrina Kaif and Kylie Minogue, “Blue” is releasing Friday.

Maidens & the makeovers

October 22, 2009

Rani's shed the weight-and stepped into minis, in case we hadn't noticed.
As Sushmita, Lara and Ayesha also go in for a makeover, we rate the ladies on their style impact.

It seems to be a season of style makeovers in Bollywood. Tinsel town divas are shedding the kilos as a way to not only give their flagging careers a gentle push, but also seemingly in a last bid attempt to reinforce their sexier, slimmer and hauteur presence on the screen. Lara Dutta, already fit, has gone a step further by toning up her body and getting bikini- ready for her new big release Blue. Rani, who had by now gotten us used to her fuller form and somewhat sloppy style, has done a fashion volte face by shedding the excess fat and opting for short skirts instead of her trademark sarees. Ayesha Takia and Sushmita Sen are the other two who have undergone a change in appearance. So as Bollywood babes go on a focused overhaul mission by going for the salads and camping at fitness clubs and yoga centres, Lifestyle analyses the most talked about makeovers in tinsel town and gets fitness and fashion experts Ruchi Jha and Nalandda Bhandari to rate the babes on their newly refurbished style quotient.

Rani's svelte sleek avatar
Rani Mukherjee admitted in an interview that she lost eight kgs in 10 months, thanks to a dedicated yoga and gym routine. To complement her slimmer frame she has gone for a poker straight sleek hairstyle and is seen flaunting legs in short skirts like never before.

Body wise: Says Ruchi Jha who has taught power yoga to celebs like Anoushka Shankar, Bipasha Basu and Mughda Godse: " Rani has lost lot of weight but she still has a long way to go. Since she is petite any extra weight shows more acutely on her. She may have reached her ideal weight but in today's times of skinny bodies and size zero frames, Rani could still shed some more weight. She needs to work on her hips and thighs particularly. Also as you hit 30 the weight loss process slows down as the body cells and fibres tend to go a bit sluggish. So maybe that's why it took her that long to get rid of extra fat.

Style wise: Designer Nalandda Bhandari, who has designed for Gauri Khan and Avanti Birla says, " Rani has an earthy charm about her that makes her look great in traditional wear like sarees. Recently one was quite surprised to see her wannabe look on the Hi Blitz cover where she wore a bikini top. While wearing short skirts once in a while is good she shouldn't do this whole wannabe thing of ' have body will flaunt'. Since she is petite she has to be careful about what styles work for her. And while her straight hair looks slick, her earlier wanton wave too did wonders for Rani." How to get it right: If you are petite and bottom heavy, the Sarvangasana and Natrajasana are effective in maintaining a slim lower body. Running is the most effective way to tone up the butts and thighs. Also you need to minimise the carb intake in your diet.

Lara's toned taut look
After a string of flops, style savvy Lara is most recently seen flaunting a toned body in her new film. Her bikini act and chiselled frame hasn't gone unnoticed nor has her recent public appearances in shrinking mini dresses and neck plunging gowns.

Body wise: Ruchi Jha says, " Lara is looking hot in her fitter form.

Though she was never overweight and did not really require drastic regimens, she required a bit of wise exercising to chisel her frame. With exercises she has remodelled her body to a leaner and sharper physique. Though she still needs to work on her love handles and oblique area ( area just above the waist) where her fat deposits show. She has got perfect skinny legs for her tall frame. Lara has also lost extra weight she had on her abdomen area and that is reflecting in her facial contours. Scientifically if you lose weight on the abs area the face automatically responds by showing a chiselled appearance and this is what is making Lara's makeover look like a million bucks.

Style wise: Designer Nalandda says, " Lara's smouldering new look is suiting her as she is wearing dresses she is effortlessly comfortable in. Her gowns have definitely gone plunging but her confidence in her body is making the look work for her. She is also been seen in more feminine dresses. She could wear more of mid thigh skirts and even shorts to flaunt her shapely legs." How to get it right: Ruchi Jha advises a power yoga regimen to get Lara's chiselled frame. She says, " Surya Namaskar combined with trikonasana helps keep excess fat off your side profile.

For those who, like Lara, want to loose weight while retaining a glow on their skin should concentrate on a healthy diet.

Include maximum proteins in your food. Sip a lot of buttermilk and skip the wheat bread and go for fibre bread that aids in digestion.

For Lara's chic style, designer Nalandda says, " Go for styles that are not too bold but make a subtle statement. You can wear dresses that are well fitted and sharply tailored but not overtly clingy. Avoid too much bling, go for smart accessories."

tube tattle - Groove for more!

Rani Mukherji is a trained Manipuri and Odissi dancer. She revealed this on the sets of Sony's Dance Premier League. She also said that her mother had pushed her to learn dancing, something she was never inclined towards.
The queen of the show, as she is addressed, arrived the other day at the shoot at RK Studios in Chembur, on the dot.

During the lunch break, she was heard talking to one of the contestants that she was three when she danced on screen for the first time. Bappi Lahiri's daughter, Reema Lahiri, had been her partner. Hmm, some memory lane trip that was!

Rani Mukherjee is making a determined bid for a comeback, says Promita Mukherjee

The gossip mills have been in overdrive about Bengali diva Rani Mukherjee and the status of her romance with Yash Raj scion Aditya Chopra. But the lady herself shrugs off such questions and says she has been tackling a very different challenge away from prying eyes. “I was learning how to play cricket and at the same time working on my body,” says the actress.

After almost 18 months, she is back where she belongs — on the silver screen — with her film Dil Bole Hadippa!. In the film, Rani plays cricket crazy Veera Kaur, who disguises herself as a man, Veer Pratap Singh, to get into a cricket team that’s coached and captained by Rohan, played by Shahid Kapur. The film, says Rani, has been a “rollercoaster ride”, what with toning her body and learning the nitty-gritty of a game, which is a national obsession.

The film’s opened strongly, with packed shows in multiplexes but there are indications that it lost steam later. Nevertheless, her new look has become the talk of the town. She’s extremely toned, and is clearly enjoying her new look. “I wanted to look my part. I didn’t want to be a heavy-looking cricketer. So it was important I tone my body and look like an athlete,” says Rani.

It took her almost 10 months to get into shape. She did Yoga, cardio exercises and weight training. And that wasn’t all. “I have shifted to a new four-storeyed bungalow (in Mumbai’s Juhu). So getting up and down the stairs served better than treadmills,” she says, laughing.

And no, she hasn’t given up on her mishti doi, sweets and macher jhol-bhat (fish curry and rice). “I am a complete foodie. I think it’s important to have a balanced diet and I do it contrary to what people think — that I have stopped eating,” she says.

Her bikini top also made headlines. “It was Manish (Malhotra)’s idea. He said ‘You are looking great so why not try it out’?,” says Rani.

In this cricket-crazy nation, Rani used to be in a minority because she didn’t like the game. But not anymore. “I enjoy watching cricket on TV as I understand the game. Also, I had a great time playing the game,” she says.

So what made for her long absence from the big screens? “I worked on Dil Bole Hadippa! which demanded a lot of time to prepare for the characters, especially that of the cricketer. For the film I had to be a very good batsman. I didn’t want people to come out of the theatres and say that I didn’t play the game realistically,” says Rani. It took her six months of training and another seven months to shoot the film. “So, that’s the hisab kitab of the year off I took,” she says.

And post Dil Bole Hadippa!, Rani is planning another break. “I’ve been working really hard. So I’ll go for a holiday with my family,” she says. She hasn’t signed anything yet, but there are lots of offers pouring in, and she’s busy reading scripts. “I want to do an action film. That’s something I haven’t done yet,” she says. Rani insists on only working on one film at a time, and it’s important for her to choose something which is exciting and “completely stunning for my audience.” According to insider reports, she will be paired with Aamir Khan in her next release.

Rani says she decided Dil Bole Hadippa! would go down well with audiences. “My audience comes with certain expectations. They wanted to see a happy Rani. They wanted to see me dance, do comedy,” she says. “Also, at the same time, it’s challenging playing a boy. It was a new thing and I did it consciously,” adds Rani.

The actress says she was overwhelmed at the response the film received at the Toronto Film Festival where it was premiered. “I felt I was among audiences in India. Everyone was whistling and laughing and having a good time,” she says.

Fun moments abounded during the shooting of the film too, she says. “Shahid (Kapur) used to get very depressed when I played Veer, because he was searching for his heroine. And when I used to play Veera, suddenly his face used to light up,” recalls Rani, grinning. Also, she had more fun playing Veer than Veera. “It’s fun to be a man,” she says.

The actress got tips from both Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan on playing Veer. “Aamir gave me some tips on how to put on a moustache, since I had to put on the beard and moustache for long hours in the sun and shoot. He taught me that I should smile while putting the moustache or else it gets very stiff with the glue on it. And Shah Rukh gave me valuable tips on playing cricket. He is a great sportsman in real life. He had been a wicketkeeper himself. So he helped me with the net practice,” explains Rani.

How has the actress kept up with the changing times in Bollywood? “For me it isn’t a great change. I have done a mix of all kinds of films. In fact, in my third year in the industry, I did something as different as Hey Ram,” she points out.

She has added to her histrionic repertoire over the years. The actress says she has learnt a lot from her directors and co-actors. “Working with them brushed off on me,” she says.

Says director Pradeep Sarkar, who directed the Bengali beauty in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag: Journey of a Woman: “Rani has an inborn talent. She totally gets into the character and every little detail is worked on. She never comes blank on the sets. And she’s awesome in terms of timing.”

Director Ketan Mehta agrees. “Rani is a natural. She has extremely sharp instincts that are bang on and she has a great comic timing. Also, she is a superb dancer,” he says.

Mehta says Rani has got better over the years. “Her timing and dialogue delivery has improved. And she has acquired a very good comic sense,” he says.

“Often strong points become a weakness. So the surprise element is missing at times,” feels Sarkar.

Acting wasn’t Rani’s first choice anyway, though she’s from a ‘filmy’ family. “Getting into movies was not something I was ambitious about. It is my mom who told me to join movies and it went on from there,” she says, candidly.

Rani had grown up watching his aunt, Deb-ashree Roy, a top actress in Bengal. But that never pushed her into joining films. “I used to go to the studios to meet her and used to be very wide-eyed. It’s quite strange as at that point of time I didn’t know I would get into movies myself,” she reminisces.

She stepped into filmdom playing a feisty daughter-in-law in Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat in 1997. The film wasn’t a box office success but Rani’s performance was noticed. She followed it up with superhits like Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and there was no looking back after that. Soon, she was counted among the top heroines in Bollywood.

Though it wasn’t a hit, Rani counts her first film as a major turning point in her life. Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, would be some of the others. “Saathiya would be yet another one as it was a different film which gave me another kind of respect as an actress,” she says. “Looking back, there have been a lot of turning points like Bunty aur Babli, Hum Tum, Yuva, Hey Ram, Black… It has been a great journey,” she says.

And which are the movies she enjoyed doing the most? “The ones where I am playing the fun roles,” she says.

So what is a normal day like in the actress’ life? When she is shooting, her life revolves around her work. Then she is back home and relaxes by playing with her niece, Mayesha. And when she is not shooting? “I just chill at home,” she says.

Her day starts with exercising. She does cardio and weight training in the morning. “That is all I do for fitness,” she says, grinning.

For someone in the glamour world, Rani comes across as a very homely person, especially in her interviews. “Not just in interviews,” she insists, “I am actually like that,” she firmly proclaims. She doesn’t like partying out. “I like to party at home though,” she adds.

Watching films is her favourite pastime. She loves watching romantic comedies and rues the fact that she wasn’t able to watch too many movies while she was busy shooting for Dil Bole Hadippa!. “New York was the last film I watched,” she says. But now that the madness of shooting and promotions are over, Rani Mukherjee is all set to catch up on movies — from the other side of the screen.

Aamir to make grand entry for Yashraj
Sharin Wader Butani, TNN 27 October 2009, 12:00am IST

It’s not the first time that Aamir Khan’s going to be making an appearance on a TV show. Aamir Khan More Pics

But this time, he is opening the biggest production banner of Bollywood, Yashraj’s show. The producers who have entered the arena of television, have tapped all their loyalists including Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Uday Chopra, Tabu and Riteish Deshmukh to make an appearance on their show - which, sources say, is called Rishta.com. “But for the grand entry, they wanted their Fanaa star Aamir Khan,” informed a source close to the channel on which the show will be aired. Rishta.com, apparently, is a comedy series which will show a matrimony office through which couples meet. Wonder whether the stars will be playing matchmakers here!

DBH selected for another festival .It is the third one it will be shown ..

===========================

7th Annual San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival -November 5 to 8

3rd i Film group proudly presents the 7th Annual San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival at the Roxie and Castro Theaters. The festival screens November 5-8, 2009, with opening night at the Roxie Theater on Thursday, November 5, continuing there on Friday, November 6, and then moving to the Castro Theater for the weekend of November 7-8.

From art-house classics to documentary films to cutting-edge Bollywood, 3rd i promotes diverse images of South Asians through independent film. The 2009 festival includes films from South Asia and the South Asian diaspora including: India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Australia, Canada, Germany, the UK, and the USA.

The opening night film is the riotous documentary Supermen of Malegaon, directed by Faiza Ahmed Khan (India, 2008) which tells the tale of making of an ultra-low-budget Superman in the dusty textile town of Malegaon. Also on opening night, 3rd i features local talent in a program of shorts, along with a performance twist provided by the local neo-benshi poet/writers Neela Banerjee and Summi Kaipa.

Closing night film is the award-winning documentary Yes Madam, Sir, directed by Megan Donegan (Australia/India, 2008) is already being talked about as an Aca rdemy Award winner. Yes Madam, Sir chronicles the trials and ultimate transcendence of India's first female police officer Kiran Bedi, a tireless reformer. The film is narrated by Helen Mirren, and director Megan Donegan (from Australia) and Kiran Bedi, will attend the closing night screening.

Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Castro Theater showcases El Cerrito filmmaker Tariq Tapa's debut feature Zero Bridge (USA/India, 2008), about a thief who dreams of escaping his life in Kashmir. This neorealist film was a runaway success at both the Venice Film Festival in 2008 and the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2009.

This year's festival features a variety of styles and themes, like Love in India, directed by Kaushik Mukherjee aka Q, (India/Germany, 2009), a film that explores the contradictions of India's sometimes "old-fashioned" sexual attitudes versus the sensual overtones of the Radha/Krishna mythology. Cinema-verité is represented by Children of the Pyre, directed by Rajesh S. Jala (India, 2008), the story of seven extraordinary children who make their living at the busiest cremation ground in India, and Iron Eaters (Lohakhor/ Eisenfresser), (2008, Bangladesh/Germany), a documentary by Germany-based filmmaker Shaheen Dill-Riaz about migrant workers who risk their lives dismantling massive ships in Bangladesh.

Other doc selections include Warrior Boyz (Baljit Sangra, Canada, 2008) about gang violence in Vancouver's South Asian community and the lesbian love-story Searching for Sandeep (Australia, 2007), directed by Poppy Stockwell, about the filmmaker's internet love affair with UK-based Sandeep Virdi. Other independent narrative features besides Tapa's Zero Bridge include New York-based filmmaker Joseph Matthew's sensuous story of love and betrayal Bombay Summer (USA/India, 2009). UK-based Punjabi filmmaker Avie Luthra presents his first feature Mad, Sad and Bad (UK, 2009), a comedy about three siblings in London struggling to find direction. Other films include the late night favorite Quick Gun Murugun (2009, India) directed by Shashank Ghosh, an outrageous film about a vegetarian cowboy whose mission is to save cows from the beef-eating public.

The festival also focuses on the Sikh community with Warrior Boyz, set in Canada; Location/Situatedness in Memory, a meditative short about Sikh identity by San Francisco-born filmmaker Kamalpreet Kaur, and our Bollywood extravanganza My Heart Goes Hooray! (Dil Bole Hadippa!), about a feisty Sikh woman who dons a mustache and turban so she can play on her local cricket team. Leading lady Rani Mukherjee steals the show in this gender-bending film of music, camp, and romance.

The festival looks into the past to see where Bollywood glamour began, presenting the Guru Dutt B&W classic Full Moon (Chaudhvin Ka Chand, India, 1960). Full Moon, renowned for its exquisite attention to sets and costumes, captures the sophistication and richness of the Muslim, literary upper-class in Lucknow. The film, combines comedy and drama, and centers around a case of mistaken identities in a love triangle. This is a rare opportunity to see this masterpiece on the Castro Theater screen by a filmmaker who is slowly being discovered by the West.

MY HEART GOES HOORAY! (DIL BOLE HADIPPA!)

9:30pm
Saturday, November 7
Castro Theatre, San Francisco

Director: Anurag Singh
Country/Year: India, 2009
Running Time: 148 mins
Language: Hindi with English subtitles

Fans know that Rani Mukherjee is one of the most beautiful, dynamic women ever to grace a movie screen. Cinephiles know her acting skills are unmatched in Indian cinema. Opportunities rarely come along to see her in a film that draws equally on her dramatic talents and her glam appeal, but My Heart Goes Hooray! is just the ticket. Featuring sparkling comic performances from both Mukherjee and her co-star Shahid Kapoor, as well as dazzling song sequences, this is a rousing, fun-filled musical romance – with cricket, too.

Mukherjee plays a feisty Punjabi woman who just happens to be a brilliant batsman. But, as a woman, she is limited in where she can play. When the cocky Rohan (Kapoor) returns from overseas to take up coaching a national men's cricket team, she seeks a position in the lineup. There's no place on his team for a girl, however. With the annual India-Pakistan match coming up, too much is at stake to indulge a woman's dreams. So, in a conceit right out of Shakespeare, she dons a beard and a cute turban and transforms herself into a man.

Full of the rump-shaking, percussive joy of Punjabi music, this is a full-on Bollywood masala movie, so it's never shy about deploying Mukherjee's smoky hotness and the hunky cuteness of Kapoor. Right up to its fantastic closing number, this movie bursts with vibrant, firecracker charm. – Toronto Film Festival

Respect nautanki, says Rani Mukherjee

Mumbai, Oct 29 (PTI) Bollywood star Rani Mukherjee says that 'nautanki', the traditional Indian form of drama and dance, needs to respected as its current usage is misrepresenting.

"Nautanki needs to be treated with a lot more respect," says Rani.

The actress regrets that the dance form has been grossly misrepresented and the word 'nautanki' is used loosely to refer over the top behaviour.

Rani, who made her debut on small screen as a reality show judge with Sony TV's 'Dance Premier League', believes that the loud dress and mannerism of the 'nautanki' dance troupes, add to the beauty of the dance form.

'Nautanki', consisting of folklore and mythological dramas with interludes of folk songs and dances, is popular mainly in the northern states of India.

Rani’s sickness stops show

October 30th, 2009 - 3:05 am ICT by sampurn -

Rani Mukherji hasn’t been keeping too well lately. She has been suffering from a sore throat and a runny nose. However, being a professional, she still decided to come to shoot for Dance Premiere League at RK Studios. Dressed in a sari, she sneezed and sneezed until choreographer Shiamak Davar, who is a judge on the show as well, got uneasy because of the number of retakes that had to be taken every time Rani sneezed. He then offered her medication and even ordered some tea and a blanket for her. The show stopped shooting until Rani felt better

SUNA HAI KI

Rani Mukerji, a judge on the dance reality show, keeps on sipping endless cups of tea without milk on the sets (reminds us of Saif's character in Love Aaj Kal).

Her assistant has a box of teabags ready at hand. All that the aide has to do is to pour hot water, dip two teabags and her chai is ready.

No wonder the actress hardly eats all that tea must be killing her appetite! Oh, but who cares about eating when you look this good. Can we have some chai, please?

Now Rani speaking in Marathi

October 30th, 2009 - 6:31 pm ICT by sampurn -

It seems Rani Mukherjee is enjoying her stint as a judge on small screen. The actress is being a perfect mentor to her contestants too and when it comes to give them comments she leaves no stone unturned for it too.

Our source from the sets reports, “Rani loves her role on television and is enjoying every moment of it. Along side she sees to it that what ever comments she is giving to the participants, the message should reach them in correct way.”

Recently it was seen how Rani talked in a sign language to one contestant who was disabled from ears. “Again in the next episode, Rani liked the performance of a contestant from Maharashtra to an extent that she gave him good comments and that too in Marathi,” adds the source.

There is lot more to be discovered about this Bong beauty as she laughs and enjoys with Dance Premier League. So viewers keep glued as there are many avatar of Rani which will be exposed in the show.
