This time Rani luckily has Zoom to support her at any extent.

Zoom gets to her to clarify the SLB spat rumours ,Rani told them ,"She is too close to Bela & SLB to do such things.

Bela casted her for a film with Shahid & another heroine which was named "Charulate'.

But then she decided to do a quick film with Adnan so she was cool with that as Charulata did not happened.

So she will rather beleive SLB & Bela than some "anonymous source as indicated in the article.."

Zoom also says Rani should understand she needs to come out & clarify the facts in media as there are lots going on to bring her down with the negative articles one after another.

Design don and his leading ladies

Bollywood’s badshah designer Manish Malhotra talks to t2 exclusively about his famous five women and one famous man (of the moment)

Rani

By the time we were working out the look of Dil Bole Hadippa!, I was fed up of kitsch. So though the film did demand a certain kitschy sensibility, I tried my best to stay away from the Bunty Aur Babli feel. There is colour and energy in her look and also a certain kind of prettiness. Her salwars are narrow; we have stuck to only two pleats to make Rani look slim. The signature look she is sporting throughout Dil Bole… is the koti that has received interesting response from a cross-section.

Sonam

Sonam is so beautiful. She is a vivacious girl, has a super figure and a stunning smile. But I do think she is too young to be wearing couture. She should be dressed chic. So much couture will alienate young guys who might want to date her! In I Hate Luv Stories (A KJo film being directed by Punit Malhotra, Manish’s nephew) she will be dressing her age. The filming is yet to begin but we did a photo shoot. Her look is all jeans and tees. Casual and cool.

Konkona

I worked with Konkona for the first time in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag where I styled her Western portions and we were back together for Wake Up Sid. This film’s look I would say is a meeting point between Konkona’s earthy world and my glam world.

Her clothes are mostly cottons and her signature look is kurtis that almost always come with a Benarasi border. So we have retained the Indian touch. The other consistent feature in her look is a crushed cotton dupatta that we have styled like a stole. You see her wearing fitted jeans in the film. I love her hair in Wake Up Sid. It’s cut in steps and then out-curled. I think she’s looking quite glamorous.

Kareena

No more bikinis for Bebo, in Raj Kumar Hirani’s Three Idiots she will be portraying a ‘real’ look. Her wardrobe will be dominated by easy drawstring pants and casual tops and the sexy somethings will be reserved only for romantic songs!

Kajol

My Name is Khan is a very different film. It’s quite intense and hence Kajol isn’t playing a regular Karan Johar heroine (she’s de-glam here). Her look is very wintry as the film is set in the cold months of San Francisco. The first half of the film is all jackets and scarves and though the second half becomes lighter tones like beige, it is still heavy with layers, sweaters and mufflers. I have been working with Kajol since 1993 so our comfort level is legendary!

On Karan Johar turning designer...

Karan has always been so interested in clothes and styling and I am so glad he is making a debut with menswear. We chat about fashion all the time and I am always there to support him, just as he is there for me…

Sushmita Sen, Rani Mukherji replaced in brand endorsements
Story By: Businessofcinema.com Team updated on: Oct 08, 2009

MUMBAI: Actresses Sushmita Sen and Rani Mukherji have long since been wooed by either film makers or brand managers. However, it now looks like a thing of the past. Rani and Sushmita are being replaced in their advertisements by different actresses. And the difference is that the replacements are not Gen-X actresses.

Rani's work has been handled by her father, Ram Mukherji and he used to deal with various brand managers. A brand manager, who recently replaced Rani, said, "Rani is a brilliant actress and we did have a great time working with her. But she had several issues and wanted a higher price, much more than her market value. We tried negotiating with her for several weeks, but as things were not moving any further, we approached Vidya Balan. The deal proceeded so smoothly that we dropped all ideas of wooing Rani anymore and signed up Vidya."

The same applies for Sushmita, wherein she has been replaced by Kajol in the Olay cream commercial. The brand manager disclosed, "Sushmita is a fine performer and is a lovely lady, but there is a lot of baggage and catering to that is a big hindrance for a suitable working relationship."
Strangely both the heroines have been replaced by actresses who are their contemporaries, in their thirties. Sushmita had brands like Pantene and Olay to her name. Rani had Dabur Vatika, Good Night, Munch and Fantaa. With working environments catering more to the actor rather than a star, brands and film makers are trying to move away from unrealistic and temperamental demands.

Rani Mukherjee roped in as judge of DPL

Instead of Madhuri Dixit, it will be Rani Mukherjee who will be seen as judge of Sony's Dance Premier League..

Rani Mukherjee is finally on board as judge of Sony's Dance Premier League. Earlier, Madhuri Dixit was almost finalized to be part of the big and unique show, but the unavailability of a nanny to take care of her kids resulted in her backing out of the show.

According to our source, "The production house tried all ways possible to get Madhuri in. But it could not happen, and it was then that they approached Rani Mukherjee as judge. Rani has a bigger reason to be part of the show, as her latest film on which she had high hopes, Dil Bole Hadippa fared miserably at the box office. Rani now feels that DPL is the best way to stay in the limelight".

Mohammad Morani of Cineyug told us, "Madhuri is not doing the show. Rani is almost finalized, and her chance of making it as judge is 80:20".

We tried calling Danish Khan, Marketing Head, Sony but he remained unavailable.

DPL goes on air on October 9th, and will air every Friday and Saturday at the 8 PM slot.

Marriage not a relay race: Rani

OMAR QUERESHI, TNN 9 October 2009, 12:00am IST
Print Email Discuss Bookmark/Share Save Comment Text Size: |

It’s just so easy to hit a soft target. Rani Mukherji

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb.c...00&resizemode=4

That’s what Rani Mukerji seems to have become for some sections of media — simply because she refuses to respond; holding onto dignity above clarification. But it was time. I had a tough time cajoling her, until she relented. Rejoicing at the accolades she’s got for her superlative act(s) in Dil Bole Hadippa! she was in a happy place. Here’s the Queen Bee in a rare exclusive, about media and more...

The media thinks you take the ‘I-will-talk-when-I-want-to’ stance too often...

I haven’t changed a bit over the years. But yes, journalism has changed a lot. It’s not my nature to take calls from the media and talk each time I get an SMS about any issue. If it’s something that makes sense to me, I’d probably answer, but not when I’m busy working or spending time with my family. I know that as an actor I have to talk to the media so they can tell the audiences about me. But when that becomes completely wrong and baseless, I switch off and withdraw.

It upset you that people referred to Dil Bole Hadippa! as your ‘comeback film’...

They’re probably trying to use the word ‘she has reinvented herself’. But they end up using ‘comeback’. Which is strange because ‘comeback’ is a phrase used for actresses who get married, have babies and then come back; and none of the two things are happening in my life.

You still get upset when the media writes badly about you?

I don’t get upset. It’s because most of them are the kind of reporters who don’t know me, who’ve never met me in their life. So I don’t care. But what bothers me is when they test my intelligence and make me out to be a person I’m not. Not portraying me correctly to my fans.

You mean like persistent rumours of your marriage?

Exactly! When they write stories about my marriage, I feel really funny and strange. They keep linking me with a certain person. And they’ve been proclaiming that I’m getting married for over last three years. Every six months they decide on a venue and a date. But the date keeps shifting, simply because it’s unsubstantiated. And the media keeps passing it on, like a relay race.

The rumours keep pointing to Aditya Chopra ...

I’m not thinking about marriage at all. I’m focusing on my work. There are so many things I want to do. Not that marriage will stop me from doing films. If I’ve found a person with whom I can spend the rest of my life with, yes, I need to marry. Today I don’t think that it’s about the biological clock at all. Marry when you’re ready is the mantra. But I am single, yaar. Can I shout that out?

There was talk that your attempt to ‘patch-up’ Salman with SRK, on Salman’s TV show, upset both of them...

Not true. I don’t get into anybody’s life. I’m too caught-up with my own life. They are my friends and I share a great relationship with them, but I prefer steering clear of controversies.

Not too many actresses say nice things behind your back...

I can’t relate to these things. I’ve genuinely not bitched about anybody behind their back. The fact is that if an actress has made a name for herself — it speaks a lot about her. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be in this industry where people are ready to pull you down. So, I respect every actress simply because they must have something to be able to make a name for themselves.

Shahid Kapoor: ‘I Want to Be a Complete Actor’
By R.M. VIJAYAKAR
indiawest.com October 08, 2009 06:51:00 PM

MUMBAI — Back-to-back, Shahid Kapoor has starred in two completely antithetic films: Vishal Bhardwaj’s stylized, dark and technique-heavy “Kaminey” and Aditya Chopra’s sugar-and-sarson saga whose every shot can be predicted, “Dil Bole Hadippa!.” What’s more, before the year is out, the actor will star in Ken Ghosh’s “Chance Pe Dance.”.

We catch up with the star, who is sporting short, spiked hair in sharp contrast to his long-haired looks in the released films. We compliment him on how well it suits him, he blushes and we get to business.

Excerpts from an interview with India-West:

Q: Your dad [acclaimed actor Pankaj Kapur] always says that mainstream cinema has not explored your caliber. And now you have done “Kaminey,” complete with a lisp, a stammer and a dark edge. What’s his reaction?

A: (Grins) He is happy. I too want to be a complete actor who is not into doing just one kind of film or role. I am not in a race, and different things excite me. Like after playing the contrasting twins in “Kaminey,” I loved playing the cricketer in an out-and-out masala film like “Dil Bole Hadippa!,” wherein I was the quintessential Hindi film hero. On the other hand, “Kaminey” was a load off my head as I did something different and out-of-the-box.

Q: How much of a sportsperson are you in real life?

A: I love cricket and one reason I had great fun doing DBH! was that I had this dream about playing the game in a major test match stadium and to do so while shooting at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai was a wild fantasy come true!

Q: There was talk about Rani and you being a mismatched pair.

A: I think that we looked great together, and we looked right too. For me, a new co-actor brings a certain freshness in my psyche and approach. We had a great rapport and there’s nothing wrong with a mix-n-match approach.

Q: “Kaminey” met with a strange mixed response.

A: I am glad that largely such a film was accepted. Such films need to be marketed differently, released with, say, 300 instead of 1,300 prints. From what I know, the audience from 12 to 40 years of age are loving the film, while those above 40 aren’t because many of them are not understanding it. This is because the earlier generation is used to simple films and “Kaminey” has no spoon-feeding.

Q: The film would never have worked without Priyanka and you.

A: Films like these need a star, frankly. Look, I want to do all the song-and-dance kind of mainstream films. It is only after a certain stage of success that you can play around with other sensibilities.

Are you ready for Rani, the judge?

Looks like Rani Mukerji isn't dwelling too much on the failure of her recent movie Dil Bole Hadippa.

She has moved on to television as the judge of a reality dance show titled Dance Premier League -- a show with a unique format where teams from all zones of India -- North, West, East, Central, South and even one team of NRIs -- will compete for the grand prize. The show starts on October 9 every Friday and Saturday on Sony Television.

Rani will be the judge in the gala round along with choreographer Shiamak Davar and actor Arshad Warsi.

Talking about the show Rani says, "I wasn't planning to do television shows as I was pretty much obsessed with my film, Dil Bole Hadippa. I danced a lot in the last one year. But I decided to do Dance Premier League because it is my kind of show. I love dancing as well as watching people dance."

Asked what will be the judging criteria, she replies, "I am not going to judge the dancers in terms of technicalities because that's Shiamak's department. I will judge on the basis of passion for dance and entertainment. Basically I will be the voice of the janata. If their performances touch my heart then they will score a full sixer," she smiles.

"I love dancing because it makes me happy and it has been my passion since childhood. I have learnt Manipuri and Odissi dance. I basically love any dance form.

"During the promotion of Dil Bole Hadippa the media asked me whether I wanted to buy an IPL team. At that time I said that I cannot afford to buy one. But now I would say that I signed DPL to buy IPL next year," she jokes.

So is it difficult is it to criticise people?

"Criticism is the best form of flattery. It should be taken positively as it can help you perform better. If someone is trying to criticise your work it means that they love you and want you to improve."

Asked whether the judges will perform on the show, pat comes the reply, "No. Sony might not be able to afford it after they have already got me on this show," she laughs.

So why did it take so long for her to come to the small screen?

"I cannot decide immediately, right? This is the right time to judge a show on television because of my interest in dance. It was natural and an obvious step," she says.

Rani says yes to DPL; IPL next year

Headlines Today

After failing in her comeback attempt on the big screen through her latest movie Dil Bole Hadippa, actress Rani Mukherji is set to make things hotter on the small screen, not through acting though but as a celebrity judge.

Rani is looking for a million bucks on prime time with her million dollar smile.

"During the promotion of Hadippa media asked me a question if I am planning to buy an IPL (Indian Premier League) team. I said I can't afford it. I have signed DPL (Dance Premier League) so that I can buy an IPL team next year," Rani said.

Trust Rani to hit a sixer on screen or off it! When questioned about her reasons to be a reality show judge, she pulled a whammy, albeit a sarcastic one!

But while Dil Bole Hadippa could not bring back Rani's queen bee status in Bollywood, she would be hoping small screen's popularity does it for her. So, an offer that was refused by Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai, became Rani's next career choice.

"I was very obsessed with my Hadippa last one year, I danced and played cricket and now DPL fallen into my lap. It's a natural extension, I love dance, I watch TV," Rani said.

"I am going to be a good judge here. If you are gonna touch my heart, I'll give u a full sixer," she added.

But if you think Rani's being on the show also means feasting your eyes on groovy moves on her sexy, toned body then wait for another day.

"Will there be judges' performances? No, Sony can't afford it. It's dicey," she replied.

But then, Rani also knows the ways of the world. These days the small screen is as popular as the big one. Her counterparts from the industry, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu are supporting the competing teams in the show. No wonder, Rani decided to take the plunge.

"If they call me superstar of the show, it's not true. You are the real superstar on the show," she says.

The actor's humour might be laced with sarcasm, but Rani knows it's all about being visible and reality TV is her first step

"I am single" - Rani MukherjeeFriday, October 9, 2009, 16:49 [IST] By Raymond Ronamai

Rani Mukherjee certainly deserves better treatment. She is like anyone of us but for the name and fame. She is happy with the accolades she has received for her performance in Dil Bole Hadippa though it didn't do very well at the box-office but the false stories about like marriage has upset her.

Buzz up!Rani said that she felt funny and strange when some idle brains start stories about her marriage to a certain person (Aditya Chopra). She added that the rumours of her marriage has become like a relay race, as the media keep passing it to one another over the last three years.

The talented actress has made it loud and clear this time around by proclaiming at the top of her voice that she is single. She said that she hasn't thought of marriage and would settle down when she finds Mr. Right. She added that she is busy with films at the moment and would marry when she is ready.

Now, Rani has put an end to all the rumours!

October 09, 2009, (Sawf News) - Rani Mukerji makes her TV debut today, October 9, appearing as a judge on Sony reality show, Dance Premier League.

She will be judging the contestants and picking the best dancers from teams from all zones of India -- North, West, East, Central, South and a team of NRIs.

Other Bollywood celebrities such as Bipasha Basu, Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor have appeared on the show in the past during the audition rounds to promote their films.

While Rani will be acting more on the votes of the audience, dance guru Shaimak will be going into the minute specs of dance steps of the contestants. Arshad Warsi will be the third judge on the show.

Rani says marks her arrival on the small screen and the timing is perfect as she has more time available now, a prerequisite for doing a reality TV series. She said she is not likely to be performing on the show, joking that since Sony has hired her as a judge they won't be able to afford her performance.

Rani on her TV debut

After a string of big-ticket celebrities taking to TV reality shows, it is now Rani Mukerji’s turn. The Bollywood actress is making her small-screen debut as a judge on the new reality show, Dance Premier League. She spoke at a press conference for the show yesterday:

Why did you take up DPL?

I was not planning to do this show as I was obsessed with my latest film Dil Bole Hadippa, but the concept just fell into my lap. Plus, I love dancing because it makes me happy and it has been my passion since childhood. I have learnt Manipuri and Odissi and love any dance form.

Is there any strategy to judging?

I am not here to see the technicalities. I will be judging them on performance, entertainment and passion for dancing. I will be the voice of the janta. Shiamak will be the perfect judge who will look out for the minor details.

Are judges on such reality shows more critical?

That’s the job of critics. As I said earlier, I am the people’s voice, and even if there is criticism, one should be able to take it in a positive way. We criticise as we want our loved ones to do better in life, so there is no need to feel bad.

Will the audience see the judges’ dancing talent too?

After hiring me as a judge for the show, Sony may not be able to afford a performance, so the possibility is slim (laughs).

Can we term this as your small-screen debut?

Yes, definitely, this is my start in the television world.

What took so long?

To appear on TV, you need to take time. This is the platform where you can communicate with 50 million people at one shot. There are people who don’t like to come to the theatre and watch films, so I am connecting with them through this show. This is the right time to be on television.

Which TV shows do you watch?

I don’t want to comment on that but I like all dance-based shows.

How long did it take you to agree to do the show?

Well if you want me to give you details, then listen, it took me 127 hours, 30 minutes and 21 seconds to decide to do this show.

Are you planning to invest in IPL?

At my earlier press conference I had said I couldn’t afford an IPL team, but maybe after signing DPL this year, I will be able to afford an IPL team next year.

'The best form of flattery is criticism' – Rani Mukherjee

Rani Mukherjee talks about her entry in small screen with Sony's Dance Premier League…

Rani Mukherjee, Bollywood's 'Queen of Hearts' becomes the 'Queen of Dance' as she dons the role of a judge in Sony Entertainment Television's Dance Premier League, produced by Cineyug.

Wearing a golden sari with maroon border that beautifully reflected on her dusky skin, Rani did not have to make any effort to blow the breath out of every sane guy in the vicinity. Unabashed even after making the press wait for more than two hours Rani brazenly went on to answer its questions after making a statement of apology for 'the slight delay'.

Over to Rani…

What is the criterion of your judgment of the contestants?
I'm gonna judge them on their passion for dancing, their level of performance. Basically I'm the voice of the people.

What is the importance of dance in your life?
I think dance is something which I have in me right from childhood. I love dancing. I'm very very passionate about dancing and that's the reason why I've learnt Manipuri and Odissi. But I like all forms of dancing (irrespective of my training). When I see somebody dance I'm just charmed into a statue…I just can't take my eyes off that person. Dancing is something which is so beautiful, something that gives a lot of happiness to your soul. Dancing is everything to me! I consider dance and music as two synonyms for me.

Do you think there is scope for classical dance in the present world?
We are trying to include classical dance in DPL. Dance Premier League is representative of all the zones in India - North, South, East, West, Central and NRIs. I'm hoping classical dance is also featured.

Your last film 'Dil Bole Hadippa' was heavily panned by the critics. Why?
You know that question would best suit the critics (laughs). the best form of flattery is criticism, if you're so important that people are criticizing you, it means you as an individual make a difference. I think you should take criticism… not in a light way… but in a way so as to make a change in yourself…in a positive way. You should take it in a way that's gonna help you…work better and do better. If somebody criticizes somebody else on their work…then I think they are just trying to say that we love you and we want you to improve and work harder.

Will there be a 'Judges' performance in this whole show?
No, I think Sony might not be able to afford it after what they've already gotten me onto this show for (laughs). So that's a little dicey question right now.

Can we regard your involvement with DPL as the start of many more on television?
Yes, absolutely! (Smiles)

But don't you think you've delayed your arrival on the small screen just a tad bit?
You cannot arrive immediately on television…it always takes time. (laughs) Television is a medium which reaches out to more that 50 million people. There are a lot of audiences out there who don't prefer to visit the theatre but instead enjoy getting entertained within the confines of their cozy homes. So this is a very good medium to connect to my millions of fans who've given me so much love. But I was just waiting for a chance where I share my interests too. So here its dance and it was but natural that I take this offer up.

How long did it take you to take your decision?
I would say about 127 hours … and 30 minutes… and…. 21 seconds.

Are you going to be 'khadoos' on the show?
No no… I'm not going to be that! (laughs) Like I said I'm the voice of the junta. That is the reason why I've been invited on this show. Because to evaluate the technicalities we have trained choreographers as the judges. What's the position of hands, are the toes pointed enough …all these will be judged by professionals like Shiamak Davar. I'll be seeing the performance like an ordinary person. I'll just see if I'm enjoying the performance… but whether I'm 'khadoos' or not you'll come to know when you watch the first episode.

What serials do you watch on television?
I will not say that because then I'll have to diplomatically say all the serials I watch are on Sony. That's a personal thing for me…what I do in my bedroom and what I watch in my bedroom.

But what kind of shows?
Dance based shows.

Lastly, tomorrow is Mr. Bachchan's birthday. Would you like to wish him?
I would like to wish Amit uncle a 'Very Very Happy Birthday'. He is one of my all time favorite stars and once again, I wish you a very happy birthday uncle!

‘I’m already a big boss!’

Bhajji chats to CT about cricket, Rani and reality TV

VINITA CHATURVEDI

On field, he's known to annihilate his opponents with his sensational bowling, which flabbergasts the batsmen completely. But off the field, Harbhajan Singh is just a simple, sensitive guy, who gets emotional at the mere mention of his late father. His focussed approach and lethal spin delivery has won India many crucial matches, yet the man, who was recently voted the ‘most stylish player’, still remains very down-to-earth. One of those few cricketing stars of the country, who chivalrously reply to the SMSs, Bhajji speaks to CT seedhe dil se…

‘MY NATURAL GAME’

Bhajji makes his intentions clear the moment you ask him if cricket lovers can look forward to his awesome ‘firki magic’. Without much ado, he says, “I just hope to play my natural game”.

‘HOPE RANI GETS A HIT!’

Not many know that character of Veer Singh, played by Bollywood siren Rani Mukerji in her latest release Dil Bole Hadippa, has been apparently inspired by Harbhajan Singh. In fact, the actor admitted recently on television that she had watched several clippings of Bhajji on and off the field before essaying the role. Try ragging him a bit about his motivational oeuvre and the Turbanator says in his cool-as-a-cucumber voice, “Yes, she did meet me sometime back and also invited me for a special screening of the film, but I couldn’t make it because I was playing abroad.” But, isn’t he rather wary about the way the character has been projected on screen? Not one to get ruffled, he easily rejoinders, “Can fiction ever be real? Akhir toh woh film hai, haqeekat nahin! But, I really hope Rani gets a hit because quite a few of her films have flopped of late.”

‘SACH KA SAAMNA WAS SCRIPTED!’

The man, who had enchanted the tele buffs and danced away to the top slop in
the dance reality show Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, goes on the backfoot the moment you ask him if he’s ready to participate in a show like Bigg Boss. “Never! I’m already a big boss,” says he with a chuckle. And what about braving
something like Sach Ka Saamna? The cricketer pertly replies, “According to me that show was completely scripted and fake, so there’s no question of participating in that.”

TAKING ON AUSSIES NEXT!

Reality bytes may not seem all that lucrative now to Bhajji because he’s looking forward to “playing Aussies when they come to India sometime later.” And is he also excited about making it to the ICC World Test Team of the year? “My job is to play. Awards, rewards and recognition don’t really matter much to me,” says he philosophically before signing off.

Brand jinx for Bengal beauties too
- Rani and Sushmita slip on endorsements but Bipasha holds sway

Mumbai, Oct. 10: Bollywood’s Bengal babes are slipping on the brands.

Unrealistic financial expectations and temperamental demands seem to have pulled the red carpet from under the feet of Sushmita Sen and Rani Mukerji.

Rani, who has been steadily losing brands like Munch and Fanta to GenX actresses like Genelia D’Souza, got a big jolt last week when Vidya Balan replaced her as the face of a mosquito repellent brand that she had been endorsing for long.

Top sources in the brand’s marketing team said though the decision came post the not-so-successful Dil Bole Hadippa, Rani’s latest release, it was not the only reason behind the break-up.

“When we started negotiating a new contract for a new product from our brand stable, Rani, despite the Hadippa failure, demanded an astronomical price — much above what she used to quote earlier. We tried negotiating and wooing her for several weeks. She had several issues and it did not work out. So we decided to move on and signed up Vidya who was much less demanding,” said a source in Godrej Sara Lee, manufacturer of the Good Knight brand of mosquito repellents.

Vidya, incidentally, is a contemporary of Rani in terms of age. “But she throws fewer tantrums and is very professional. No wonder she is shoring up endorsements from others,” said the source.

With a career spanning 13 years with India’s top production houses, Rani was once an equal of Aishwarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor in terms of brand power.

Back in 2007, she was one of the highest paid women brand ambassadors in Bollywood along with Ash and Kareena, paying Rs 13 million in taxes from endorsements alone.

While marriage marred Ash’s fortunes (she has recently made a comeback with a joint brand-endorsement deal with husband Abhishek Bachchan at a record price), Rani has been down to endorsing just two brands now from her repertoire of seven a couple of years ago.

The other Bengali beauty in the same boat is Sushmita, the former Miss Universe whose Bollywood career has been floundering for years now.

Sush, who plumped up for a role in David Dhawan’s recent release Do Knot Disturb opposite Govinda, has upset the brands she endorses with her diva act.

“Apart from her lack of recent achievement, she comes with a lot of trappings and mood swings that is at times too difficult to deal with,” said a source in Procter and Gamble which replaced Sush as brand ambassador for Olay.

As with Rani, Sush has been replaced by a contemporary, Kajol. Gul Panag and Soha Ali Khan have also been signed up as faces of the Olay brand.

“Sushmita is a fine performer and is a lovely lady, but professionalism also matters and that is where Kajol scores big time despite not being an active Bollywood leading lady for some time now,” said the P&G official.

The only girl from Bengal who has hit it big in the world of brand endorsements and continues to rule the roost is Bipasha Basu. She, along with Asin and Shilpa Shetty, recently replaced Sushmita as the face of Pantene.

“Bips is level headed in terms of pricing and professional about her commitments. No wonder she is getting so much endorsement work,” says a brand manager who has worked with all the three ladies from Bengal at some point or other.

Bipasha, who was roped in to promote the super-glam international shoe-brand Jimmy Choo during the opening of its first India outlet in Mumbai on Tuesday, is going from strength to strength.

She is also the face of Gili diamond jewellery of Geetanjali Gems. Kareena and Katrina Kaif are the two other celeb endorsers of the group’s other two diamond jewellery brands.

Bips, who already has a clutch of top brands like Reebok, Alcome and Kinetic in her kitty, has strengthened her position with three more big contracts this year — Aristocrat, Henkel’s Fa Men Extreme and La Opala Diva.

That makes her the biggest brand-babe from Bengal.

Rani Weaves the Magic!

Rani Mukherjee is tired of being married off time and again by the media. Every now and then we hear the rumour of Rani’s marriage to her close friend Aditya Chopra, Yashraj Films honcho. But the actress still remains single. The actress is receiving a lot of attention nowadays with her new glamorous makeover and slim body she’s acquired for her upcoming film Dil Bole Hadippa with Shahid Kapur.

How do rumours about your affair with Aditya Chopra affect you?
These rumours have been going on for three years and they have now started to affect my career. Filmmakers who approach me for roles start by asking whether I am getting married. They have apprehensions whether I can commit myself to their project. I am the only daughter to my parents. When I get married, it will be announced publicly and will take place with grandeur. It is a shortcoming that I have, as I do not like to talk about my personal life. The media has taken advantage of my silence and communicated to my fans the incorrect message.

Somehere do you feel you have lagged behind other actresses?
The number games are for those who believe in it. The roles that I get make me the actress that I am. Getting challenging roles is the best part of being in any stage of your career. I am trying to reinvent myself as an actress and as a spectator. I am waiting for a great offer. I want to work with Vishal Bharadwaj, Imitiaz Ali, Anurag Basu. But they have to come up with something which I would like to do.
