I want to do all kinds of films as an actor: Shahid

New Delhi, Sep 27 : Shahid Kapoor is still basking in the attention coming his way after the box office success and critical acclaim for Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Kaminey', which featured him in an intense action role, a far cry from his image of a 'romantic hero' in his earlier films like 'Ishq Vishq', 'Vivaah' and 'Kismet Konnection'.

The accolades for his double role in 'Kaminey' notwithstanding, Shahid insists that as an actor he wants to try his hand at all kinds of roles.

The Bollywood heartthrob, whose latest film 'Dil Bole Hadippa' features him in a light hearted romantic portrayal, feels that a role like that in 'Kaminey' comes an actor's way ''once in a blue moon''.

''A role like the one in 'Kaminey' does not come to an actor every day. Moreover, as an actor, I want to try my hand at all kinds of films. I am trying my hand at everything. I am still at the stage when I am discovering different sides to myself,'' Shahid told UNI here.

Nothing illustrates this more than the fact that after playing intense characters like that of Charlie and Guddu in ‘Kaminey’, Shahid's latest film ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ belongs to an altogether different genre than ‘Kaminey’.

''Kaminey’ and ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ are vastly contrasting films both in terms of genre and their treatment. While ‘Kaminey’ was an intense action film, ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ is a fun film. It is a colourful film, one which is high on entertainment.

'Hadippa' is an exclamation which is made when we are in a good mood, or when we are happy or when we are celebrating, which is somewhere the flavour of our film,’’ Shahid says.

Shahid said, ‘Dil Bole..’ is a film which he had not attempted before.

''Firstly, I play the character of a cricketer in the film, which is something I have not done before. Further, I have never before done a film with the kind of celebratory flavour that 'Dil Bole..' has. It’s new for me that way,'' the actor said.

The film brings together on screen for the first time the pair of Shahid and Rani Mukherjee.

Infact, ‘Dil Bole..’ has Rani playing a ‘sardarji’. In the film, Rani’s character dons the garb of a ‘sardar’ (Sikh) to get into the area cricket team headed by Shahid’s character.

''I enjoyed the interactions between Rohan and Veer. It was a guy to guy interaction and to have that kind of interaction with Rani was really nice. Rohan and Veer are extremely funny together. It’s very fresh, very different and really very hilarious,'' he said.

Shahid, who had years ago worked with Rani in a cola commercial, added, ''I was surprised when I was offered the film with Rani.

Infact, I was telling Rani throughout the movie that "Rani I am your fan, I still don’t believe I am doing a film with you after that commercial". And she always used to get damn irritated. She used to say Shahid, now you are my actor, please behave like a hero.'' The actor is elated at the positive response that the film has evoked from across the country.

''I am happy that 'Dil Bole..' has got a very positive response.

'Kaminey' was a different film and this film has different sides of mine. It looks like a fun film. I have really got a very positive response and I am really happy.

It's great to see that people like me and Rani together,''Shahid said.

''Rani has done some brilliant work in the past and has been getting lot of praise for her portrayal of Veer. Having worked with her earlier, I was sure that if anybody can pull this off it would be Rani and no one else. Working with her you really gain a lot. She has so much experience on her side.

She is so focused and I really respect that in anybody,’’Shahid added.

Incidentally, ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ is Shahid’s first film with Yashraj Films.

''YRF is an extremely professional set up to work with.

The best thing about YRF is that it is headed by a creative man.

Adi(Aditya Chopra) is a director himself and he is the producer.

Usually, there are problems when the director is on a different side and the producer is on the different side.

Here, you have somebody who understands the creative part so it is a lot easier to communicate with him,'' Shahid said.

Made under the Yash Raj Films banner, "Dil Bole Hadippa" also stars Anupam Kher, Rakhi Sawant and Vrajesh Hirjee. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) recently.

'Aamir helped put on my moustache'
September 28, 2009

By Devansh Patel

Rani Mukherjee has a glow about her and it's partly owing to the release of her first film for the year, Dil Bole Haddipa!

Devansh Patel recalls his last meeting with the actress in London, where he was greeted with a reluctant handshake, a yawn and caught her whispering to her PA: "What is this for?" This time around, she seems to exude a charm that's as contagious as her bubbly characters...

How did you find working with director Anurag Singh?

Anurag, by nature, is very simple. He is also very religious. Whenever he got a file of his shot division, he had a photo of Sai Baba and Durga Mata in it. After seeing that, I felt that this faith of his will definitely be fruitful for all of us and DBH.

What's the fondest memory you took away after shooting DBH?

It was my first schedule for the movie. We were shooting the song Bhangra Bistar and I had this get-up where I am supposed to be a man. I remember Shah Rukh Khan was shooting for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Aamir Khan was shooting an ad at Yash Raj Films, at the same time, and both came on set.

They looked at my male disguise and were quiet taken aback. Aamir helped me put on my moustache - that was so sweet of him.

Both SRK and Aamir were eager to see what I was doing in the song and gave their blessings. Aamir and SRK are very special people in my life and by them being on the set on my first day, I just felt blessed.

How did you find your co-star, Shahid Kapoor?

He is an extremely hard working, dedicated and sincere actor. And he is very serious in what he does. I think that is what is going to take him a long way. He understands cinema and is an asset to the film. Having Shahid in the film makes it fresh and contemporary.

He looked so good that every time he came on the set, I would tell him: "Oh my God, Shahid, you are looking so handsome!" He used to get so embarrassed.

I think the first time I met Shahid was on a Pepsi advert that I did with SRK and Kajol back in 1998. That time, Shahid was one of the dancers for Shiamak.

On this shoot, he reminded me again of the night we were shooting the advert. I came out and ruffled his hair - he remembers that very fondly. I told him it has not changed.

I think the entire crew worked like little kids trying to get our school project right, so that our teacher, which has to be Aditya Chopra, sees our project report and says, "Okay, this project is really good." So we are all trying to make him happy.

And what about working alongside Sherlyn Chopra?

I never expected that she would do so well. She was prepared when she came on the set. I have seen her videos and she is very good-looking but when she shot with me, we were all very pleasantly surprised to find that she could do even more. When I was new and worked with Aamir and SRK, they used to inspire me to do my best. I think I did the same, as she just needed a little motivation.

Is there more to Rakhi Sawant as well?

Rakhi is very entertaining on and off the set. When I met her, I was pleasantly surprised to see this other side as she always came across as serious on TV. She is professional and hard-working, as is Vrajesh Hirjee. He is there with me for most of the film as my friend and used to come up with the most hilarious one-liners.

What did you miss most after pack-up?

I have so many fond memories, especially the Punjab schedule because we were there for nearly two months. It was a smooth shoot in Chandigarh; the police and people were most accommodating. I think the food is absolutely delicious. On the way back to our hotel, we would stop for noodles and masala chai.

Tell us about your exercise routine for the film?

We had quite a health-conscious unit. Shahid is into workouts big time. I was also exercising because my character had to look physically fit. I also introduced Vaibhavi to yoga at some point. Anurag never came to the gym, though. He was only eating and shooting but he promised that by the next film, he will lose weight.

Between playing Veer and Veera, which role was more fun?

Playing Veer was very challenging because I have not played a man before. And, yes, I enjoyed that more than playing Veera. Strangely enough, even the unit members were friendlier when I was Veer and when I was Veera again, they would become more respectful. This is a character I will cherish throughout my career.

How much preparation went into playing Veer?

I worked on my cricket because that was the one territory I wasn't familiar with. I didn't know how to hold a bat correctly and the correct posture and nuances of a cricket player. Walking with knee pads was difficult. So it is these things that I had to work on. Having hair stuck on to my face was uncomfortable and painful (the removing of it, that is). I guess there is no gain without pain (laughs).

What should the audience expect from Dil Bole Hadippa?

We put a lot of love, hard work and creativity to the making of DBH. They ... should just enjoy it for what it is. I prepared a lot for this film and hope that they aren't disappointed.

What was the reaction from those close to you to the trailer?

My friends are biased when watching my movies. But I don't think I saw as much excitement from them for my last movie. That left me happy.

PICTURES INCLUDED...CHECK OUT THE LINK

Rani Mukerji looked resplendent in a red sari and gold jewelery. Her new toned look is amping up her beauty quotient, and we just can't take our eyes of her! We did steal a couple of glances at the fantastic decorations at the venue of the Durga Puja, though.

Also seen were Director Anurag Basu, Bappi Lahiri who tried to out-bling the goddess Durga but in vain, a scruffy Hurman Baweja, Ashutosha Gowariker and his wife.

Note: Hurman Baweja is an eyesore. Why don't his parents buy him new, nice looking clothes for the festivities?!

When superstars, colleagues, rivals, and cousins - Rani and Kajol were seen together at the series of celebrations for 'Durga Pujo'. This is that one time of the year which marks the epitome of Bengali festival celebrations, organized by the North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja Charitable Trust, Juhu. More so, onlookers truly believed the rivalry had taken a back seat. For Kajol was seen to serve the bhog which Rani received in all cordiality.

Spirits riding high, relatives and families were seen abounding the place in huge numbers, and over all the whole occasion was grand success!

It must be then true, before the eyes of God, man must humble to what he is! Here's wishing our favorite cousins in Bollywood, and all others a very happy Durga Puja and a prosperous year ahead!
Love,
Sanjana

Bollywood stars celebrated Durga Puja

By: Bollywood Mantra Staff on 28th September 2009

Durga Puja has been celebrated by Bollywood stars with gaiety. Bengali gal Rani Mukherjee was in upbeat mood as this year she could celebrate with family and friends, for the last two years, she was not able to attend the festival due to busy schedule. Dressed in red sari and gold jewelry, Rani looked elegant. She distributed prasadas with her own hand to the guests. Director Ashutosh Gowariker and actor Hurman Baweja also visit the pandal and seek the blessing of Goddess Durga.

The Bachchan family also actively took part in the festival. In Mumbai, they visited the Durga Pandal and like common men took part in the puja. Also present with them was Abhishek’s sister Sweta Bachchan.

Hottest couple of Bollywood John Abraham and Bipasha Basu visited the North Bombay Sarvojonin event in Santacruz and seek the blessing of the Divine God.

Celina Jaitley also celebrated Durga Puja with jauntiness.

The end of her Raj?

Sandhya Iyer

After playing cricket, Rani’s next ambition is to do action. At a time when most of our heroines’ idea of a different role is slipping from jeans to sari, unfortunately even someone as talented as Ran

It’s been a while since an actress has made it to the top on the sheer dint of her talent. Which is why, Rani Mukherjee’s ascent to the top was a much celebrated one. No actress in recent times — at least not since Madhuri Dixit — has won so much plaudits for her histrionics. With films like Hey Ram, Saathiya, Yuva, Bunty Aur Babli, Black, and Hum Tum, the Bong actress went from strength to strength and for a while it appeared that she was simply unrivalled. But strange are the ways of humans who have a proclivity to mess up things when they are picture perfect. Just when one thought the hazel-eyed Queen was all set to rule Hindi films for a long time to come, she slipped. She now finds herself in the middle of a slope where she could lose more grip if she doesn’t tread sensibly.

Rumours were rife about the actress being dejected on account of Abhishek Bachchan’s romance with Aishwarya Rai and their consequent marriage. Some ‘insiders’ insist she came close to her mentor Aditya Chopra around this time. When reports of the relationship started becoming public, Rani clammed up to the world. The warmth and vivacity was replaced with an uncharacteristic reticence. She restricted herself completely to Yash Raj Films and occasionally made an exception for good friends Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

All this is of course in the realm of speculation — since Rani herself has never spoken about it. But her deteriorating work over the past few years and her seeming lack of interest in doing substantial roles outside are indicative of her complacent withdrawal as an actress and her overall lack of judgement. The past few years have seen very little work of any real quality from her. Her contemporaries like Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra have surged ahead by sheer consistency and a healthy competitive spirit. Rani probably realises it but won’t accept that she let the momentum slip. “I think it’s just a phase. There are times when your decisions are correct and all your films work at that point. Then there are times when your choices go wrong, because the public rejects it,” is her simplistic assessment.

Loss of an actress
While Rani let others — even lesser talented actresses — steal a march over her, the unfortunate outcome of her decisions has been the absence of a genuinely wonderful actress who at one time left even her harshest critics gaping at the range she displayed. Rani is probably that rare actress who got the kind of meaty roles very early on that generally heroines are lucky to get only at the fag end of their careers. But her insistence on remaining in her comfort zone (Yash Raj) has resulted in her roles and films becoming repetitive and tedious to watch. The banner — while giving her ‘meaty’ parts — has almost always treated their ventures like star-vehicles, with very little stress on authentic setting or characters. They’ve relentlessly peddled mindless fluff, and since Rani has been at the centre of most of these films, it’s led to a ridiculous fall from grace. Her latest, Dil Bole Hadippa, which was considered her comeback, is another atrocity from the banner, completely lacking in any originality or finesse. The actress, however, refuses to smell the coffee. Her idea of good cinema seems to be only the ‘paisa vasool’ variety where she can play the entertainer to the hilt. Disconcertingly, she believes Yash Raj has been offering her roles she would never get elsewhere. “I played an angel in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. I have grown on films like Mary Poppins, so it was great to do it. Then I played a man in Dil Bole Hadippa! If I had my way, I would like to work with Yash Raj forever,” she says.
But what about stepping down a little from her star pedestal and experimenting with roles and showing more of her awesome range. “If after Black also, I have to keep proving myself and showing my range, what can I say?” she asks incredulously.

Mass appeal
Also, the actress believes she feels compelled to do massy films, so as to satisfy her large fan base. “I’m not interested in doing films that will be enjoyed only by a very niche segment. After a point, you are conscious of the fact that your films must appeal to a wider audience,” she reasons.
She’s not averse to new age films and filmmakers, but makes it clear that she won’t do small films for the heck of it.

“Just because a film has a big budget doesn’t mean it’s not meaningful. Do you think Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was not meaningful? Budget has nothing to do with it. Also, a lot of the films I was offered were repetitive. I’ve already done emotionally charged roles, so I didn’t want to do it again. Then there were people who said I was always crying in my films, so I decided to make them laugh now,” she says.

Fortunately, talent is a hard thing to repress and in the coming years, one hopes that the actress will come into her own. The remnants of star dust would have settled by then and one hopes there will be plenty for her to accomplish.

They made a hash while the Sun still shone...

Sandhya Iyer

Success, like an uphill mountain, is difficult to climb. Failure, on the other hand, is swift like a slope. Bollywood abounds in examples of stars who had the world at their feet at one juncture, but lost the momentum for explained and unexplained reasons. Rani Mukherjee of course still remains a star to reckon with and we hope she finds her groove as an actress. So even if she’s clearly not the force she once was, there’s no reason to believe she cannot strike back with a change in attitude to her career.

However, the path of success one leaves behind is doubly hard to retrace, as actor Vivek Oberoi will tell you. The actor who was seen as a potential star after credible performances in Company and Saathiya, lost many of his films (and goodwill) overnight (literally!) The infamous episode where he held a press conference about Salman Khan hassling him with phone calls, made him an outcast in the industry. And when his films started failing, he had no friends to rely upon. Today, the actor is struggling to regain lost ground. Hopefully, his next few biggies will get him back in the fray. But Vivek’s case exemplifies how talent alone is no guarantee for success, and everything from the right attitude to the right PR have their rightful place in the making of a star.

The more heartbreaking episode is that of Shiney Ahuja, who swept every award in town for his breathtaking performance in Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi. But his fall came quickly, when he decided he didn’t want the ‘art film hero’ tag to stick to him and consciously started courting commercial films. Many of them flopped and Shiney’s overconfidence didn’t help him much either. Also, many of the chinks in the actor’s armour were revealed when he worked with lesser directors. The on-oing case, where he is accused of raping his maid, could well be the last nail in the coffin.

More often than not, actresses have been sensible in devoting a fair amount of time to their careers before calling it quits. Madhuri, Sridevi, Karisma Kapoor, Urmila... are all actresses who gave their careers a full run. Amidst them, you have a Manisha Koirala, who frittered away a very promising career, no thanks to an unprofessional, casual approach to her films.

Then there was Pooja Bhatt who, one remembers, decided to quit as a leading lady when she was 24! Always a rebel, she said she had enough of running around and wanted to explore the creative side of filmmaking. One wishes she’d stayed a little longer, respecting her talent and fanbase.

Of course, a person’s personal ambitions and wishes are something to be considered. But for those who have been struck by the cruel blow of failure, one can only say that setbacks, while unfortunate, are also a measure of a person’s inner strength. Which is why, the phoenix bird legend continues to be the most poetic and wondrous ode to hope.

Man, What a Woman!

She came, she smiled and she conquered. Rising out of a self-imposed exile for over a year, Bollywood heart throb Rani Mukherjee made rounds of her native city to promote her latest film, Dil Bole Hadippa. In an unusually cheerful and mirthful mood, she rattled off answers to all the oh-so-controversial questions with commendable ease, speaking of how she is a comedian in real life and all the attention she has been getting from women!

Rani Mukherjee

Dil Bole Hadippa marks your return to the big screen after a long gap…and that too in a hot new avatar. Was the interim a conscious decision?

Very much so. Firstly, I needed a role I would get excited by. Playing a female cricketer, I wanted to do all the scenes myself. I needed to train myself in the game and also lose weight so that the audiences wouldn’t see a short, pudgy Rani running on a field with a jiggling paunch! I did yoga, cardio, had a balanced diet and also shocked my body by changing my workout regime to lose the pudginess.

Does that mean the Bong in you hasn’t had her share of sweets this time?

Are you kidding me? I think I have gained some weight on this visit as I have been on a purely mishti doi and roshogolla diet!

How was your stint at the Toronto Film Festival?

It was brilliant to see so much adulation and fanfare for films from our motherland. I was truly touched by the overwhelming response that the film received from even non-Indians.

You play a woman disguised as a man, who also gets some attention from women…We are salivating for more info on that!

Hmmmmm…do you want all the juicy details?! (winks) Let’s just say, I got a lot of attention from women…and leave the rest to your imagination!

How did you prepare for the role? Was Veer more difficult or Veera? Does comedy come naturally to you?

Both the roles were difficult in their own ways. However, Veer was more challenging simply because of the physical demands of wearing a beard and moustache in the blazing sun! Shah Rukh and Aamir (Khan) helped me a lot with my role. While Aamir taught me how to emote through the beard and moustache, Shah Rukh taught me the nuances of cricket. As for comedy, I am a clown in real life, so comedy comes naturally to me!

Any plans to become the ambassador for the women’s cricket team?

Not as of now as I still think I am not qualified to do so. But given the opportunity, I would definitely grab it to show my support for women playing a largely male game.

You worked with Shahid Kapoor after the Pepsi ad. Were you at all apprehensive about looking older than Shahid in the film?

We actually watched the ad a few days ago and we couldn’t stop giggling! He looked so childish and funny as

opposed to the handsome, mature man he has blossomed into. It was a pleasure working with him, especially since he has really come of age as an actor. As for insecurities, there were none from my side. And as for Shahid, he had also gotten accustomed to gracing the screen with an older actress in Kismat Konnection.

Why only Yash Raj? When are we going to see you in dramatic roles that you have always excelled in films like Black, Yuva and Hey Ram?

As soon as I get a meaty enough role! Fortunately or unfortunately, the roles I have incidentally ended up zeroing in have been Yash Raj films! I have been reading a couple of very interesting scripts but I feel that I have come to a point in my career where I can say yes only if I really like a role. As for the future, right now there are a couple of projects in the offing but I can’t speak about them until they materialise fully.

Do you regret doing Black, especially because after that all your performances seem to pale in comparison?

Never will I ever regret Black as it was the single most educational role for me. I came out a different person from the experience. As for the comparisons, it is my responsibility to follow up Black with worthy performances to live up to the standards that the film set for me!

Ash on Oprah, Rani on Ashtami... and he
- Sabyasachi sari is the chosen one for Bollywood’s rivals at big show or family festival

SHRADHA AGARWAL

Which man do arch-rivals Ash and Rani love to flaunt? Not Abhishek Bachchan, but Sabyasachi Mukherjee!

If Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore a Sabya sari (and husband Abhishek) at the Oprah Winfrey show shot in Chicago and telecast in the US on Monday, Rani Mukerji wore a Sabya sari for her family’s Ashtami puja in Mumbai.

Both were signature Sabyasachi Mukherjee. While Aishwarya wore a “three-panel khadi and cotton-net sari with embroidered paisleys”, Rani settled for a simple red and white combo, in true Ashtami tradition.

“This is a gift from my friend Sabyasachi,” she had preened in front of a STAR Ananda camera, days after telling Metro in Calcutta: “Sabyasachi has sent me saris to wear during the festival days. I just have to get the blouses stitched (to the new Dil Bole Hadippa! size)!”

But the creator in south Calcutta was clueless about the Ashtami look of the leading lady he has styled in Black and Baabul, and was “pleasantly surprised” when she called him and broke the news on Sunday evening.

With the other Bollywood queen, the star fashion designer was in the know every step of the way. “Ash’s office rang one of my assistants a day before they were leaving to shoot The Oprah Winfrey Show. I was in Mumbai for an exhibition and we mutually agreed upon an Indian look. I sent two outfits — the sari and a kalidaar kurta. The next day I went for a session of fittings,” recalled Sabyasachi.

For the Oprah show, there was more from Sabya on Ash than just the sari. “She also wore a pair of coral earrings and a coral ring from my jewellery collection.”

Ash’s first Oprah appearance back in 2005 was in a black pantsuit but she did declare that she “loved” the sari — and referred to it as a “long piece of fabric” while draping an ombre number on Oprah on the show.

Sabyasachi’s first brush with Ash came three years ago for a jewellery campaign. He is now styling her in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzarish.

When it comes to Bollywood’s biggest femme rivals, the city’s designer number one is the highest common factor.

Today Zoom shows a report how Rani's career is being sabotaged.

They shown DBH budget is 16 Cr. The film has already made 32 Cr. That means it got 100% profit .

Still media is after Rani to terms it flop.

Then they had shown how Rani is upset with Subhash.K.Jha article on Mumbai mirror .They highlighted the specific portion of the article where he had described Rani as looser ,YRF's property & also criticized her personally.

They said Subhash Jha is closed to a director who is now working with other actress rather than Rani & trying to mallign her.

Then they said Rani had done everything for DBH starting from media interaction to fan interaction & looking he career best.

Finally they said KJo & Farah have come up to her support & considering to cast her in their films...

Grand old memories
Saumit Singh / DNAWednesday, September 30, 2009 23:59 IST
Mumbai:

What's common between Rani Mukerji, Shammi Kapoor, Tanuja and Kishore Kumar? Tough one, eh? Well, it's the patriarch of Bollywood's most famous Mukherjee clan, the redoubtable Sashadhar Mukherjee. The 100th birth anniversary celebrations of Sashadhar - the founder of Filmalaya Studio, the grandfather of Rani Mukerji, Kajol and Sharbani Mukherjee, the father-in-law of Tanuja, the man who established Shammi Kapoor's career with the cult film Junglee and the brother-in-law of Kishore and Ashok Kumar (he was married to their sister Sati Rani) -- was an affair to remember.

Sashadhar Mukherjee's son, yesteryear star Joy Mukherjee (L), shares cake with the iconic Shammi KapoorAn ailing Shammi Kapoor made the effort to be present, recalled Sashadhar as a mentor to him. "The first film I auditioned for was Anarkali but I failed the test. Later I worked with him in Tumsa Nahin Dekha and of course Junglee," said Shammi, who was accompanied by wife Neela and son Aditya. All Sashadhar's children (with the exception of late Shomu Mukherjee, Kajol's father) were present to honour him - Joy, Rono (Sharbani's father), Deb, Subir and Shibani.

Why has Rani been fuming?

05 Oct, 2009 12:00 am ISTlRenuka Vyavahare /INDIATIMES MOVIES

Rani Mukherjee’s ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ has been getting decent response at the box office, although we hear the actress is not happy with critics who yet again dismissed her performance in the film.

The actress is also miffed with the media for not letting her be for the past few months. “They (media) got me married not once or twice but thrice! I mean you guys have doubted my intelligence time and again. I am a woman and marriage means a lot for me. Every time the fake news on my marriage comes in papers my family has to go through a dilemma. Media has ruined my career in a way as even if some filmmaker wants to approach me they are wary of it. They feel I might just leave the film incomplete and get married! All these rumours wont affect my friendship with Adi though” retorted Rani.

Clarifying more on her problem with the media she added, “I am open to working with other banners as long as the script is good.”

Rani, all said and done there is no smoke without fire though!

Exempt tax of Film DIL BOLE HADEEPA as it is a film rooted to our soil
ARUN D AHLUWALIA
Monday, 05 October 2009
I was rather shocked to see that there was no crowd in the DT mall for this wonderful film full of highly entertaining Punjabi culture, landscapes, a girl's passion and courage for cricket.

Her daring to become a SIKH BOY and play in an all men team under the garb when denied any opportunity for a Women cricket in a village and besides a message for Indo Pak friendship; the sound of devotional BHAJAN EK OMKAR SATGURU again and again touched me immensely; I did not care if the AUDI HALL 1 in DT in IT PARK was almost empty; I could not afford to leave the hall till last bit of HADEEPA Bhangra was finished with Rani Mukherjee and Shahid. Families Small crowd had Professors and youngsters in the crowd had an elderly devout sikh with a kirpan hanging around his shoulder.

If a film can attract such a quality crowd with so many generations and strata from society and do so much for women cricket and folk songs and folk music of Punjab, it is bound to be an immortal one; hell with ratings and crowds going to the other way. I saw it with my daughter Neha as my son said he would not go for it. It only shows ratings are so useless as a yardstick to value films of such great value.

Governments of the region must rise to the occasion and at least make it tax free in J&K,HP,Punjab & Haryana and Delhi. It is a film with a daring social as well as political message.

Well done Director; Well done Rani Mukherjee, Well Done Anupam Kher, Poonam Dhillon and all others.

Rani Mukherjee's glorious moment of the winning shots of Indo-Pak cricket, her getting known as a girl who cheated her way into a men's team and her great emotional reprimand to society & spectators from Pakistan objecting to her DISHONESTY but ignoring sports opportunities for girls, was so effective and so touching that I would like to go again for the movie and ask all my students and colleagues to see the movie. I'd recommend screening films like this, LAGAAN, CHAK DE INDIA for our students; lots of their problems can be erased with such constructive ventures all over the universities, colleges, schools in the region.

In our days as campus students we had so many films on campus and hardly any violence or strikes. We used to pay 50 paise to see the films every weekend even though we were called book worms.

Rani Mukerji replaces Madhuri Dixit?

The TV channel failed to meet the Dhak Dhak diva's conditions

By Johnny Vaz . Buzz18 Oct 06, 2009

It was good to hear that Madhuri Dixit was making a comeback on television. The Dhak Dhak girl was all set to judge a dance based reality show titled Dance Premier League. However, now it looks like the lady will not be able to make it after all.

Rani Mukerji, it seems has replaced Mads as the judge in the show. After yet another failed attempt in the form of Dil Bole Hadippa, Rani is all set to give her career a new direction.

A source from the media confirmed the news and said, "Yes, its true. Rani has replaced Madhuri. This will be Rani's first television appearance and she has already given them her nod. Rani has not signed any film after Dil Bole Hadippa. She is ready to try something new in her career. Madhuri too, had accepted the offer. She is a good dancer and loved the concept of the show. But then one of her many conditions was not fulfilled. So she refused."

The source further revealed, "Madhuri had asked the makers of the show to find her a nanny to take care of her children while she is on the sets. But they could not fulfill her wish and she walked out of the show. Yash Raj Films had hired a nanny during the making of her last movie Aaja Nachle. The nanny was with her children on the sets for 24 hours."

Who’s in DPL; Rani, Katrina or Madhuri
October 6th, 2009 - 2:51 pm ICT by sampurn -

Yes the new name has surfaced on the list of judges for Sony’s new reality show Dance Premier League. After Madhuri Dixit backing out at the last moment, the channel and production is clinging on the name of Rani Mukherjee now.

“Madhuri has ditched the channel and production house as she could not find a nanny to look after her kids. There were talks with Katrina Kaif too but things seem to be bit difficult there, thus now they have approached to Rani Mukherjee for the same,” chirps the source from the production house.

Elaborating more on the name surfacing now our source adds, “Rani is a good dancer and thus she fits in for the seat of the judge. Also the actresses haven’t signed in any films after her latest flick Dil Bole Haddipa.”

“Thus channel is very keen on having her in the panel thought things are almost finalist but nobody is ready to reveal anything till she signs on the dotted line,” concludes the source.

It seems the league of the judges on the show DPL is the reason for the delay of the show?

SHAH RUKH MENDS TIES WITH GANGULY

By Eye TV India Bureau

Who says that the relations between actor Shah Rukh Khan and former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly have been strained after the IPL? This isn't so any more as both of them will soon be coming together on Dada's Zee Bangla TV show "Dadagiri". Sourav has already been hosting the quiz show for quite some time now, but the channel is keen on making it national by bringing in Shah Rukh Khan too. Yes, this will be their first public appearance together after the IPL 2009, when both developed cold relations . Since Sourav's show "Dadagiri" has already become very popular in Bengal in such a short time the producers want to make it national by making it in Hindi.

Zee Bangla TV is currently in negotiating with Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji to come on the opening episode when it goes national. Shah Rukh is very eager to come on the show as their appearance together on a national show would go a long way to prove that his relations with Sourav Ganguly are not only friendly but also rocking! Let's hope that the negotiations between the channel and the actor are successful so the national show could begin early next year.

I wannabe your hero -

Shahid Kapoor sheds his chocolate-boy image

By Srabanti Chakrabarti

It was passion for dancing that drove Shahid Kapoor to a role as a background dancer in Subhash Ghai’s Taal. In 2003, came Ishq Vishk—his first film in the lead role. But the moderate success of the film failed to give him the toehold and the identity he was looking for.
For the first few years of his career, the young man with boyish looks was known as Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azim’s son. The next few years saw him deep in a relationship with Kareena Kapoor. The pair made news—be it the public smooching controversy or the films they did together (Fida and Jab We Met). But, the publicity did more damage than good. His identity changed from being Pankaj Kapoor’s son to Kareena’s boyfriend.

Shahid was in search of an identity even six years after he had entered the industry. However, in the year 2009, films like Kaminey and Dil Bole Hadippa changed it all. The 28-year-old chocolate boy seems to have transformed into a man. Post Kaminey, Shahid is getting recognition as an actor par excellence. “When I look back at my initial days, I must admit that Shahid Kapoor has changed completely in the last decade. Mentally as well as physically,” says Shahid.

With successful films and some big-ticket releases in the days to come, Shahid has every reason to be happy. “Kaminey was a litmus test for me. This was a genre that had never been attempted before and there were chances of the audience not liking it because of it being a dark thriller,” says Shahid, who was unsure of signing up for Kaminey. “Some of my well-wishers felt I should not take up such an unconventional film, but rather follow the tried and tested route of doing more love stories. I am really happy that the risk paid off and Kaminey was such a huge success,” says Shahid.

Vishal Bharadwaj, director of Kaminey, thinks that Shahid’s true mettle came out in the film: “He has done a fantastic job in the movie and vindicated my decision of casting him for the double role. But, he will scale greater heights if he stops concentrating on his muscles and hair, and focuses more on acting!”
“Though I have received accolades, my father’s feedback mattered to me most. After watching Kaminey he was stunned and told me that he could not believe that the same actor played the roles of Guddu and Charlie—characters who are poles apart. As an actor that was one of the best compliments I have received,” says Shahid.

The actor feels that today’s audience is a lot more receptive to newer themes and this factor played a major role in the success of Kaminey. “Over the years, filmmakers have treated the audience to overly simplified stories and movies, but now things are changing. In Kaminey they saw me playing something different from the lover boy image I was associated with. I feel that is one of the main reasons why it is so successful,” says Shahid, who has been doing chocolate-hero roles throughout his career—be it Ishq Vishk, Vivah or Fida.

“Vivah and Jab We Met were two milestones for me. They helped me get my foothold in the industry,” says Shahid, who preferred remaining jobless to doing every role that came his way after Vivah. Then Jab We Met happened. But even that could not establish his presence. It was Kaminey that worked wonders for Shahid’s career. Not only is he being respected as an actor, but he is also getting good offers from all the big names in the industry.

“Today I am working with all the big heroines in the industry—be it Priyanka Chopra, Anoushka Sharma, Rani Mukherjee or Genelia D’Souza. I know expectations from me have increased. I need to prove myself in different genres and types of films and roles,” explains Shahid, who is playing a 23-year-old college student in Yash Raj’s next film directed by Parmeet Sethi and co-starring Anoushka Sharma.

“I don’t want to restrict myself to one genre. More so, since change is the key to success in the film industry these days. I am making conscious attempts to do different types of roles. For example, my role in Dil Bole Hadippa is a typical lover boy role with a lot of song and dance,” says Shahid. However, Rani gives herself credit for transforming Shahid in the film. Says Rani: “When he was cast opposite me, many people expressed their reservations since he is younger than me. But I guess our on-screen chemistry worked and he did a great job in playing his character. I don’t think our age difference mattered at all. I have transformed a kid to a man in Dil Bole Hadippa.”

Unfortunately for Shahid (and more importantly for Rani), Dil Bole Hadippa has not done as well as everyone expected it to. But still, Shahid managed to prove a point—the dancing lover boy metamorphosed into a strong, muscle flexing actor—a force to reckon with in Bollywood.

Shahid has worked with big banners like Rajshri, Shree Ashtavinayak and Yash Raj, and small producers as well, but according to him that is not important. What matters most to him is the script and the character. “Imtiaz Ali was new when I worked with him. But I liked the story and thus did Jab We Met with him.”

On the personal front, Shahid has been linked with almost every leading lady he has worked with—the latest being Priyanka Chopra. Ask him about this and you will get a boyish smile in return. “I have been linked with almost everyone depending on the film I have done. It was Vidya Balan when I was doing Kismat Konnection and now it is Priyanka Chopra! We are good friends and nothing more than that. Everyone is rushing to link us as a couple,” says Shahid. And Priyanka quips, “Kaminey was the first time we worked together. Shahid and I share the same mentality and enjoy each other’s company. But please do not equate that to us having an affair!”

The actor gets slightly philosophical while talking about his personal relationships. “Since I had a public breakup with Bebo, I feel the media is desperate to hunt for some gossip in my life! The media and celebrities share a mutually dependent relationship. Each one should respect the other,” says the actor. “If I start analysing and changing my behaviour according to what is written in gossip columns, I will not be able to lead a normal life,” says Shahid, who believes in living life by his own rules.

Book Review: Bollywood In Posters

By Joginder Tuteja, October 7, 2009 - 13:15 IST

'Wow, a full blown voluminous book about Bollywood posters' - That's how you immediately exclaim once it is brought to your notice that a book called 'Bollywood In Posters', which claims to take it's readers through the nostalgic journey of evolution of posters from 30s till the current times, has hit the stands.

So what if around a year back, a book based on the similar concept - 'Bollywood Posters' [by Sheena Sippy and Jerry Pinto] - had already hit the stands! You still wish to find what SMM Ausaja, a film enthusiast and historian, all of 40 years of age, has to present in this book which comes with the ever so memorable poster from Barsaat with Raj Kapoor holding Nargis. Now this was the beginning of it all and while relationships have moved on to being true platonic today (let's wake up to Wake Up Sid!), the sheer intensity of Barsaat still works good enough to make you turn those 270 odd pages that follow.

First things first, 'Bollywood in Posters' is enticing enough to make you drop everything and go for the kill, mainly because of the brilliant packaging. The book is heavy, voluminous, colourful, glossy and has quality dripping page after page, hence making you quite sure that the author as well as the publishing house left no stones unturned to make the book at least 'look' excellent even by international standards. The design is done quite well too with each of the 250 odd posters finding good prominence. In fact most of the known movies enjoy a full page spread for them.

Ausaja doesn't just leave the posters for readers to gaze at. He also provides details (other than basic cast and crew) like the film's genre, famous songs, synopsis/trivia and also some prominent awards that it may have earned. Due to these reasons, on the face value at least, 'Bollywood in Posters' sounds like a good experience in the waiting.

However, the book doesn't quite turn out to be excellent, must read or belonging to 'can't put it down' kind of variety. There are two major reasons for that:

a) There isn't any 'surprise element' in those hundreds of posters that you get to explore in the book. Sholay, Dil Chahta Hai, Mother India, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Mughal-E-Azam or Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge - Now these are the kind of posters that you would anyways expect in a book belonging to this subject. Nothing wrong with that but then when one pays a huge sum of money to get hold of a book like this, one expects something that belongs to 'never seen before' variety. For example, in Sheena-Jerry created 'Bollywood Posters', there were posters of films like Rocket Tarzan, Sindbad Alibaba Aladin, Kaala Jadoo or Bollywood's own Zorro that had resulted in an immediate reaction of 'Now what's that!'. There aren't any such reactions when you turn pages of Ausaja's 'Bollywood In Posters'.

B) The written material about each of the films in posters doesn't quite make you jump with excitement. The trivia mostly belongs to the kind that a core Bollywood buff would have anyways known. Moreover, the list of Filmfare awards for most of the films just seems like a quick way out of getting some basic text in place. First and foremost, it is easy information to lay your hands on and secondly, it only becomes monotonous after a point in time. To think about it, when you are going through a book about posters, would you really be interested in knowing that in which year did Amitabh Bachchan actually go on to win his first Filmfare award?

These are the reasons due to which the book doesn't enter the league of very good or excellent read. Also, one wishes though that Ausaja as well as the publishing house were a little more careful around the correctness of the trivia.

Picture this: Alongside the poster of Aakhree Rasta [1986], it is written that in this film featured Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi together for the first time. Wrong information, because way back in 1984, they had also come together in Inquilab. Also, for the write up of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...., there is a mention of casting coup that involved actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Kajol coming together. While Rani Mukherjee (who just had a special appearance in the film) too finds a mention in this 'elite' list of actors, surprisingly Kareena Kapoor is nowhere mentioned!

However, leaving aside such minor aberrations, the text is consistent on every page. 'Bollywood in Posters' is a good buy for those who haven't owned a book on Bollywood history before and would possibly be spending good money for the first time on a book revolving around posters. Also, if you belong to the kind of film enthusiasts who wish to have a book like this neatly stacked in your book shelf or placed in a living room; it won't quite harm your reputation of being a true blue Bollywood buff.

Price: Rs. 2500/=
