Happy Birthday Rani!

Whishing you a day as special as you are. May all your dreams & wishes come true. I hope you will always find a reason to smile. But as a fan of yours, I have also one request. Please take your career more serious. We know you can easily do roles like Vidya. But it's a shame you use it so rare.. Please Rani, your fans (yeah we're discussing it in sussiforum soooo often) want to see you more in films. You can easily do at least 3 movies in a year and you will still have enough time for your private life. Because the time will come when you don't have "so much" as it its now (wedding phase, children and so on). Please make use of this! Do it for your fans who were always there and supported you everywhere, also in your difficult phase. Take care! :)

Your fan from Germany, U.Y.

KNOW YOUR HEROINES: 2000s: RANI MUKHERJEE

Although she is about the same age as top heroine Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee is, in many ways, a star of the old era. Rani has no public relations team, no presence on Twitter or Facebook, and keeps her private life intensely private. Rani’s 15-year career has seen its share of highs and lows but since she hit her peak in the mid-2000s with a series of critical and commercial successes, Rani’s star power has been in serious decline. Always a bit of a dark horse in an industry full of glamour dolls, Rani has had to constantly struggle to find a niche in an industry changes its taste in heroines faster than a item girl changes outfits. Rani has fought against those who called her too plump, too dark, and her voice too husky. She picks deliberately offbeat roles and is barely able to cover her disdain for media even when she does have a new release out. Whether it’s despite or because of her contrary streak, the fact remains that even though Rani Mukherjee is down to one release a year, she is still very much a household name.

Like many of the top stars today, Rani Mukherjee got her entry into Bollywood through family connections. Rani’s father Ram Mukherjee was a small time producer from a well-connected filmi family (1) but by the mid-1990s Ram had split with the rest of the clan and her family was going through some tough times. It was at this point that Ram’s good friend, producer Salim Akhtar (Baazi, Doodh Ka Karz), stepped in to offer the young Rani a starring role in his next film, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. It was 1996 and Rani was only 18 years old but as soon as she set foot in front of the camera, she knew she was born to be an actress.

Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, a soapy potboiler about a young schoolteacher who falls in love with her rapist, flopped at the box office (2) but Rani’s emotive performance (along with her big, expressive eyes and bright smile) was good enough to garner notice from director Vikram Bhatt, who was looking for a pretty face to fill a small role opposite Aamir Khan in boxing film Ghulam. Happy just to be working, Rani was not too proud to take a role considered too small by the established heroines. It would be her first lucky break.

Actually, it wasn’t Ghulam as much as a certain song from Ghulam that would help raise Rani’s star – “Aati Kya Khandala.” Sung by Aamir Khan himself, the song, in which a boy is asking his girl to come to Khandala with him, became a sensation. Rani became known as the “Khandala Girl” but the “Khandala Girl” knew that her fate was far from sealed (3) and she eagerly snapped up a supporting role in small college-set film from a first time director, a role that had been turned down by every big name actress in town. The director was Karan Johar and the film was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which would become both a superhit and a cultural touchstone.

Rani’s glamorous yet approachable Pooja, the Veronica to co-star Kajol’s tomboyish Betty, led to a slew of starring roles in films opposite top name heroes like Salman Khan, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, and Kamal Hasaan. Over the next few years she would see both commercial and critical success – her understated performance as a normal housewife in Hey Ram, India’s official entry to the Oscars in 2000, was particularly appreciated – but nothing to really make her stand out from the pack of top heroines. It wasn’t until 2002 that Rani’s star really began to shine bright enough to dim the competition. She kicked off a four year reign of the film industry with a film called Saathiya.

Much like all of Rani’s successes, Saathiya, the sensitive portrait of a marriage falling apart, was a big gamble. Not only was her co-star Vivek Oberoi only two films old and still unestablished in the industry but Saathiya was director Shaad Ali’s debut film. It had a grown-up script which contained none of the booty shaking or violence or saccharine romance that were considered necessities to pull in audiences and, on top of all that, Saathiya was releasing the same day as Sanjay Gupta’s Kaante - a film that ended up being the number three biggest grossing film of the year. If Rani had played it safe, she wouldn’t have taken the role. On paper there seemed to be no way this film would last the weekend, even if it did gather critical success.

But Rani’s gamble paid off and Saathiya not only managed to hold its own opposite the juggernaut of Kaante but it ended up being one of the highest grossing films of the year. And Rani’s nuanced performance as the medical student just trying to navigate life and marriage was much appreciated. And from this point on, Rani moved from strength to strength with a series of commercial and critical success. After solidifying her top heroine status opposite Shahrukh Khan in box office smash Chalte Chalte, Rani tried her luck on a series of offbeat films, some of them worked and some of them didn’t, some of the roles were big and some were small, but they all had one thing in common – Rani Mukherjee’s ability to emote.

Bollywood was (and is) still a very hero-dominated industry and heroines generally fight for films opposite the top heroes of the day, which in those days were (and are) the Three Khans. Heroes might choose to work with lesser heroines but top heroines rarely work with bottom tier heroes but perhaps Rani’s success with the decidedly bottom-tier Vivek Oberoi in Saathiya gave her confidence to say yes to films with Saif Ali Khan (Hum Tum) and Abhishek Bachchan (Yuva, then Bunty aur Babli), two heroes each fighting a long series of flops and who were (and remain) far from a sure thing at the box office.

Hum Tum (2004) was a superhit and a game changer for Saif Ali Khan (4); Yuva (2005) was a critical hit and a game changer for Abhishek Bachchan (5).

Also in 2005, and well before the current era that celebrates heroine-dominated films, Rani earned filmi immortality with a very unusual starring role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black, that of a blind and deaf woman. Her performance was so magnetic that Rani – and the film – dominated the awards season that year. Rani continued her critical successes into 2006 with Paheli (Rani’s second film to be sent to the Oscars), Mangel Pandey, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

Let’s pause for a moment at the peak of Rani’s successes to understand a few of the plot threads that would lead to the biggest downturn in her career to date. First of all, as discussed in the entry on the 2000s, beauty standards had hardened considerably since Rani’s debut and the industry was increasingly dominated by tall, slim, gym-toned, fair-skinned, girlish, and very leggy actresses. Rani, who is none of those things, found that roles opposite the big name heroes were increasingly going to actresses who were.

Secondly, as discussed in the entry on heroines, there is a glass ceiling for actresses as far as their age in concerned. While audiences happily turn out to watch aging heroes star in films for twenty years or more, audiences do not want to see aging heroines. Rani was lucky enough to have started her career in her teens but by the time she reached her late 20s, audiences, critics, and (most importantly) industrywallahs were already starting to see her as over the hill and were turning their eyes to the next young things.

A third thread is the role of Yash Raj Films and the head of Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra, in Rani’s career. Rani has always kept her love life completely separate from her professional life(6) but beginning in 2007, the formerly risk-taking Rani seems to have more or less handed her career completely over to her rumored (and very married boyfriend) Aditya Chopra, who proceeded to drag it into the toilet. There were the box office bombs that Rani did as a favor to Aditya’s friends (the dire Ta Ra Rum Pum and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic) and the heroine-centered box office bombs that had potential but were completely mismanaged (the slightly less-dire Dil Bole Hadippa! and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag). And aside from a brief interlude with her old friend Sanjay Leela Bhansali with his box office bomb Saawariya,(7) those Yash Raj Films bombs were all we saw of the once powerful Rani Mukherjee from 2007 to 2010.

But, thankfully, that is not the end of Rani’s story. Bollywood trends are ever-changing and in 2009 and 2010, a strange new trend began to emerge – the moderately budgeted, story-driven film. And these films didn’t have roles for bikini babes and buffed up heroes, they needed quality actors, actors who were willing to take a risk, actors like Rani Mukherjee. The time couldn’t have been more right for Rani to make her comeback and Rani, very much to her credit, flicked her middle finger at her detractors and jumped back into the game with a very gutsy gamble, indeed – a small film from a small-time director starring no hero, co-starring an actress no expected much of, and which took on Rani’s least favorite topic of all time, the press. That film was No One Killed Jessica and not only was it a hit but it also earned Rani her first Filmfare Award since Black.

Following the success of No One Killed Jessica, Rani has signed on to two more films that are currently in production. Talaash, which co-stars current box office queen Kareena Kapoor as well as Aamir Khan, and Aiyaa, which is being produced by current Bollywood It-Boy Anurag Kashyap. We’ll just have to wait and see whether this new wave of story driven, heroine-centered films will carry Rani along to new heights or sink her career completely. Though nothing is guaranteed in life, if I had to bet on an actress successfully resurrecting a career from the ashes, I would place my money on Rani Mukherjee.

Rani’s filmography spans quite a few styles and she has some bit roles in some excellent films but I’ll try to limit this to the big stuff.

Saathiya (2002)

Rani puts in a lovely performance in this engaging melodrama about what happens after marriage. And, as a bonus, the music is really gorgeous.

Bunty aur Babli (2005)

If you want to see why an entire country fell in love with Rani, look no further than her spirited performance as the beauty pageant contestant turned con artist in this film!

Black (2005)

This film will not be to everybody’s taste but as Rani’s top ranked performance I felt obligated to include it. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film is very stagy and almost operatic in tone. If you do not enjoy that kind of over-the-top production, it might be better to skip this one.

And a bonus pick!

No One Killed Jessica (2011)

Rani’s big comeback has her playing the secondary lead to the current top actress Vidya Balan but Rani holds her own just fine as the hard boiled journalist Meera Gaity.

1. Rani’s grandfather’s brother Sashadhar Mukherjee was a top producer in his day and is credited with bringing his brother-in-law, Ashok Kumar, into films. Sashadhar’s sons Joy and Deb were also well-known actors and another son, Shomu, married actress Tanuja, whose daughter Kajol is a very well-known actress. Deb’s son Ayan Mukherjee (Wake Up Sid) is now a director.

2. And Rani’s co-star, Shadaab Khan, son of Amjad Khan, flopped nearly as hard.

3. These “girls” come and go. For every “Dhak Dhak Girl” that has made a career there is a “Harleen” who fades away as soon as the film is out of theaters.

4. Read more about this in the post on Saif Ali Khan.

5. Read more about this in the post on Abhishek Bachchan.

6. The one rumor circulating about Rani in her early career was that she was involved in a lengthy affair with the married actor Govinda.

7. A film in which Rani Mukherjee is the only saving grace.

Rani Mukerji turned 34 yesterday!

Rani Mukerji. The very name triggers thoughts of a woman who is professional, determined and gutsy (both on and off screen!) and of course, who can forget her trademark husky voice!

As the incredible Rani turns 34, we look back on some of her acting finest, from debuting in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat; she’s shown that she has what it takes to make it in Bollywood. With super hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Saathiya, Chalte Chalte, Hum Tum, Bunty aur Babli and Paheli, demonstrating that she has the commercial power to reel in the masses, which makes her a bankable star the directors can rely on.

She’s also shown that she has the acting finesse to be able to play a whole host of characters and emotions, such as, ‘Sashi’ in Yuva, ‘Saamiya Siddiqui’ the feisty lawyer in Veer-Zaara, blind/deaf ‘Michelle McNally’ in Black, ‘Heera’ in Mangal Pandey: The Rising, confused ‘Maya Talwar’ in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, widowed ‘Milli’ in Baabul, wife ‘Shona’ in Ta Ra Rum Pum, exclusive call girl, ‘Badki/Natasha’ in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, and of course who can forget the feisty journalist, ‘Meera Gaity’ in the recent No One Killed Jessica. She’s shown that her acting hasn’t gone unnoticed, being nominated for no less than 8 Filmfare awards and winning 7 of them.

We wish her all the best for the present and the future, and hope that she continues to act brilliantly. Happy Birthday Rani!

Happy Birthday Rani Mukherji!

The dusky beauty with a husky voice...who doesnt love Rani Mukherji! The sweet coy girl who started off 15 years ago with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat has grown into a fiesty, young lady and made a mark and created a place for herself in the Indian Film Industry.

Born to the filmy family of Bengal, on March 21, 1978, Rani is a trained Odissi dancer. Despite a strong film background, Rani never thought that she can act. After doing a short cameo appearance for the first time in her father's Bengali film Biyer Phool (1992), Mukerji made her acting debut five years later, as the protagonist of Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in 1997. She received a Special Jury recognition at the Star Screen Awards.

Rani had a successful comeback in 1998 with Vikram Bhatt's Ghulam, opposite Aamir Khan and the song "Aati Kya Khandala" is still one of the most popular songs. Karan Johar's directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, starring Shahrukh Khan and her cousin Kajol, followed for her that year. After this there was no looking back for her. She essayed a brief role in Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram as Hassan's first wife, Aparna Ram. The controversial film, based on Mahatma Gandhi's assassination was a critical success and was chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars that year.

There was a slump in good roles for Rani after this till she did Saathiya for which she won a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress, and among several other nominations, received her first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare. Her next successful film was Chalte Chalte opposite Shahrukh Khan and then Veer-Zaara. Her best performances till date though are in Black, Bunty Aur Bubli and Paheli.

As of March 2012, her upcoming films include Reema Kagti's suspense thriller Talaash co-starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor and Sachin Kundalkar's Aiyaa opposite Prithviraj.

Besides acting, Rani Mukherji is involved in several soial causes.

In 2009, Mukerji made her television debut as a talent judge with the reality show Dance Premier League on Sony Entertainment Television.

Fridaymoviez wishes Rani Mukherji a Very Happy Birthday!

The Next Gen i10 – Leads the way with amazing features End of the road for the competition

getzprime.co.in/Hyundaii10

New Delhi: Rani Mukherji is commonly acknowledged as Bollywood's queen of hearts.

Seen as Meera Gaity in No One Killed Jessica (her only release last year) Rani's big release this year is undoubtedly the thriller Talaash, with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

Aiyaa with Malayalam star Prithviraj is her other scheduled release this year. The actor has also done a voice-over for Koochie Koochie Hota Hai, an animated remake of the 1998 blockbuster, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

The popular actress has been a part of the Hindi film industry for nearly 15 years. She made her debut in Hindi films with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997). Her first screen appearance though was five years ago - in a cameo for her father's Bengali film Biyer Phool (1992).

Rani Mukherji's parents - Ram and Krishna Mukherji - form part of the big Mukherji family in the Hindi film industry. Ram Mukherji is a former film director and one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios. Krishna Mukherji is a former playback singer. Her brother Raja Mukherji is a film producer turned director. Krishna Mukherji's sister is National Award winning Bengali actor Debashree Roy.

Rani Mukherji's other notable relatives in the Hindi film industry include cousins Kajol and Ayan Mukherji. While Kajol is ranked among India's top actors, Ayan Mukherji is the young director of the popular film, Wake Up Sid.

Though her debut film earned her Special Jury recognition at the Star Screen Awards that year, it earned lemons at the box-office. Ghulam, next year opposite Aamir Khan gave her a break with the song Aati Kya Khandala becoming a topper on hit lists. It remains associated with her to this day.

Years 2002 -2006 were the best for Rani Mukerji in films. Some of her hit films in those years are Saathiya, Chalte Chalte, Yuva, Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara, Black, Bunty Aur Babli and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. However, Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005) with Aamir Khan wasn't the hit everyone thought it would be.

Post those years, Rani Mukherji featured primarily in films produced by Yash Raj Films. Many of her films like Ta Ra Rum Pum, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag under-performed at the box-office and many said her penchant for the Yash Raj banner cost her professionally.

Last year, No One Killed Jessica, produced by UTV Motion Pictures, somewhat revived her career.

Personally, Rani Mukherji has been linked for years to Aditya Chopra, the reclusive filmmaker son of Yash and Pamela Chopra. His divorce in 2009 heightened the rumours of their affair and an impending wedding with Rani. The actor is equally reclusive and guarded on her personal life. All that changed recently when she was photographed with Aditya Chopra and his parents in January 2012, returning from a vacation. There is no official confirmation , or denial, of their relationship.

Stars Speak On Rani, The Birthday Girl!

The birthday girl is very close to a certain few people in the industry, as we all know. She counts Amir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Karan Johar, Shahid Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Anil Kapoor as her closest friends. But that doesn't stop people from appreciating her and her talent. On Ranis birthday, I thought it would be a good idea to look back and see what people have to say about her.

Salman Khan
She knows who she is and what she can do. After a long time Bollywood has got an actress like Rani. She is naughty, masti khor and a wonderful friend. She has taken acting as her career and has given it her 100%. Somehow Rani has acting in her genes

Kunal Kohli
You wouldn't even realise the power in the scene you have written till you see her perform it on-screen

Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Look at her track record. In two years she has gone way beyond all competition...Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara and now Black, three hits in a row! The lady is versatile in the most wonderful manner.

Karan Johar
All these years she has been in touch with me nearly every day without expecting anything in return. She's like my kid sister. I feel that much more for her because her love for me is unconditional. That eclipses her other equally important ability as an actor. Her strengths as human being will always be more important to me. Today she's a rock-solid professional

Amir Khan
If a star comes closest to holding the sway that Madhuri Dixit or Kajol did, it's Rani. She pays attention to her work, has matured and become experienced with time

Parineeti Chopra
I’m the biggest Rani Mukerji fan

ShahRukh Khan
I don’t think I would've been an actor without Kajol being a part of my films and my life. And I don’t think I would continue acting if Rani wasn’t a part of films either. I think perhaps in seventeen years they sum up my career as the most beautiful career.

Sonam Kapoor
Rani is like my older sister. If She wouldn't have been around I wouldn't have been able to become an actress. She gives me support and she gives me so much love and I can't do without Rani.I call her up everytime..When something goes wrong in my life. She is my support system. I can't do without her.

Abhishekh Bachan
Rani is a very, very good friend, and by far one of the best actors we have today. She doesn’t need any help. She makes anybody she works with look good. And that’s precisely what happened in Yuva

Madhuri Dixit
I think she is a very good actress. I have always liked her and I envy her in a way because my dad is a big fan of hers.

Priyanka Chopra
Rani is a fantastic person. We got along famously during the world tour, when we performed together. She is also not a party animal and very much a family person like me. Rani is a wonderful actor and I admire her even more after watching her performance in Black

John Abraham
She's my most favourite actress. She is wonderful, beautiful and ethereal on screen. Rani has an earthiness and a voice that can never be dublicated. Whenever I see her walk on to the stage to collect her Best Actress trophy, I know she fully deserves it.

Shahid Kapoor
What more could I ask for? Featuring in the same frame with her was a big high. She is a great dancer and it is a compliment to match steps with her. I got a lot to learn from her long experience in the industry

Anushka Sharma
I can never think of matching up to a senior pro like Rani. I’ve not replaced Rani at YRF. Even comparing us is an insult to her. Look at the kind of work she has done. If I become half as successful as her, I’ll be satisfied.

Jacqueline Fernandez
I love Rani's eyes. I think she's got the most impressive eyes in Bollywood

Rani Mukherjee
Mumbai: Khandala girl Rani Mukherjee is celebrating her 34th birthday today. Reports revealed that the hazel-eyed actress will spend quality time with her family on this special occasion.

Happy Birthday, Rani Mukherjee
By: Bollywood Mantra Staff on 20th March 2012

Rani MukerjeeHailing from a filmy family, the ace performer Rani Mukherjee may not be an unkempt newcomer into the competitive folds of Bollywood. But ever since her debut in 1997, the sizzling enchantress has evolved tremendously in the multifaceted aspects of acting.

To go by the words of the bubbly performer and trained danseuse, Rani wasn’t really keen on making it big as actress, but decided to take the plunge on parental compulsions. The actress born to Ram and Krishna Mukherjee in 1978 on the 21stday of March also happens to be the younger cousin of another enchanting actress- Kajol. While Rani’s father had his hands tried at direction, on her maternal side Rani happens to be the niece of the ace Bengali actress- Debashree Roy.

Having hit it off with a smalltime role in one of her father’s directorial venture-‘Biyer Phool’; Rani’s innings in Bollywood got going with ‘Raja Ki Ayegi Barat’. Though her performance was largely appreciated, the flick failed to punch its mark. Having completed her college deals, Rani etched her praiseworthy comeback with ‘Ghulam’- the directorial venture of Vikram Bhatt had the chirpy actress cast opposite Aamir Khan. Giving way to moderate turnover, the song sequence-‘Aati kya Khandala’ made her a household name. But ‘Kuch, kuch hota hai’ of Karan Johar was her first major chartbuster. The film with its jocular blend of romance, comedy and poignancy put across Ran’s deals as one of Bollywoods leading performers.

Having to delineate a short part in ‘Hey Ram’; Rani etched her mark in the realm of alternate films as well. The controversial endeavor of Kamal Hasan stamped her claims as a classy actress. The startling actress with her bouncy appeal and chirpy ways made her ways through a series of flicks in shapes of ‘Badal’, ‘Mujhse Dosti Karengey’,’ Chalte Chalte’ besides many others. With an assortment of awards and successes in her bag of kitty; the actress mesmerized all and sundry with her breathtaking performance in ‘Black’,’ Bunty and Bubbly’ ‘Baabul’ and ‘Kabhie Alvida Na Kehana’.

With a trail of awards and recognition to her credit, Rani had stellar roles to offer in two of the recently made flicks Laga Chunri Me Daag’ & ‘No One killed Jessica’. The flicks made in 2006 and 2011 showcased her claim as one of Bollywood’s top rated actress. Marked by spontaneous versatility and showy exuberance, the ace actress’s forthcoming projects include ‘Aiya’,’Talash’ and ‘Koochie Koochie Hota Hai’.

Rani Mukherjee
Here’s a confession from an honest fan: Rani Mukherjee is one of the best things that has happened to Bollywood! Today is the birthday of the hazel-eyed Bong Bollywood lady who literally changed the way actresses were looked at!

Though earlier Bollywood was all about the Khans, Roshans and Bachchans, Rani Mukherjee, with her unsurpassed acting skills, showed that actresses too can deliver hits without the need of male biggies! Be it Black, or No One Killed Jessica, Rani knows exactly what she wants from herself!

While Rani has won seven Filmfare awards yet, it would come as a surprise to many that she never wanted to get into acting! It was the constant push by her parents, especially her mother that Rani decided to try her luck as an actress. However, we are not too sure her debut film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat would have been the kind of beginning she was expecting!

Nevertheless, what followed were a couple of hit movies - Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Sadly though, what goes up does come down; after having a dream run in Bollywood in 2004-2006, Rani gave a series of box office duds in the following years!

And then finally in 2009, Rani, who will next be seen in the Aamir Khan starrer Talaash, decided to have a makeover! She donned a bikini in Dil Bole Hadippa and though the movie didn’t receive much appreciation, Rani’s hourglass figure proved that she still has it in her!

So, on this special day, we at ApunKaChoice wish Rani Mukherjee, the Queen of Hearts, a very happy birthday! Readers, why don’t you flip ahead and have a look at some of the best movies and roles Rani Mukherjee has essayed.

Rani Mukerji birthday special: Salman, Shahrukh, Aamir, Saif…which Khan looks hot with her?
By Shweta Parande
On her 34th birthday, we take a look at the versatile actor’s films with the four Khans of B-town

Birthday girl Rani Mukerji is one of the few actors in B-town to have worked with all four superstar Khans of the industry – Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan. Rani’s cousin Kajol and actor Kareena Kapoor are probably the only other Bollywood heroines to have had this ‘privilege’. Undoubtedly, all four Khans have helped Rani hone her acting talent at some point in her career. But that does not take away from her versatility and calibre that shines like a diamond. Her heroes have had good chemistry with her onscreen – probably thanks to Rani’s comfort level with each in real life – and that is why she has some important films of her career with them. Let’s take a look at some of Rani’s films with the Khans, with due respect to her movies with other stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Shahid Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and so on.

Aamir Khan: Rani debuted in Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat (1997), but her first film with a big star and her first hit was with Aamir Khan in Ghulam (1998). Rani’s naïveté matched Aamir’s rebel act in the film. And who can forget the number Aati kya Khandala? Being good friends with Aamir, Rani did an ‘item song’ - Kaali nagin si – in his film Mann (1999) and also starred with him in Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005). But it is in Talaash (2012) that the two are expected to recreate their magic.

Salman Khan: Rani first starred with Salman in Hello Brother (1999). The ‘funny but sacrificing ghost movie’ was not received well, but the two paired up in two movies the following year – Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega and Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye (2000) – which made us like them together. Chori Chori Chupke Chupke came in 2001, where we liked them again, although both in this film and Har Dil…, Preity Zinta was a part of the love triangle. In 2006, we got to see Rani-Salman together in Baabul, and loved them! The films where they have starred together but not opposite each other include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Saawariya (2007).

Shahrukh Khan: Ooh! The young love of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), the unrequited love of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), the cute husband-wife love story of Chalte Chalte (2003), and the extra-marital affairs in Paheli (2005) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) – we loved Rani and Shahrukh Khan in them (although in Paheli she loves a ghost). Rani was also seen in Veer-Zaara (2004) in a supporting role, and in guest appearances in Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Om Shanti Om (2007) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008). Shahrukh was seen in a special appearance in Rani and Vivek Oberoi’s Saathiya (2002).

Saif Ali Khan: Rani had crackling chemistry in Hum Tum (2004) with Saif Ali Khan and the film was a hit. But the same chemistry did not work in their later films together – Tara Rum Pum (2007) and Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic (2008) – as the script let them down (we’d like to believe that). We’re waiting for another Saif and Rani movie to come along!
Click for pictures of Rani and the Khans below, and do tell us which Khan you like her best with. Also, don’t forget to wish Rani on her birthday today!
