A-Rod says therapy helps him conquer demons

Alex Rodriguez is beloved by fans. He makes millions of dollars per season. He's almost universally recognized as baseball's best player.

Professionally, the New York Yankee superstar is on the top of his game. But Rodriguez says he isn't sure where he'd be emotionally without the guiding help of therapy.

In an interview with the tabloid television show Extra, Rodriguez admitted he seen two or three therapists over the last year to help cope with his personal demons.

"I think it's a different life that I've discovered," Rodriguez said. "[T]herapy is an incredible thing and you might get to know someone you didn't even know was in there."

Rodriguez wouldn't say specifically why he seeks therapy.

"It's about life in general and managing life. Baseball is just secondary," he explained.

Rodriguez said was reluctant to go to therapy because of the negative connotations associated with treatment. He credits his wife, Cynthia, for convincing him to go.

"Why let the train wreck come before you fix it?" he said.

Rodriguez also believes all children would be helped with therapy.

"For those kids, if they can have that advantage at this point in their lives, I think it would behoove them," he told Extra.

Baseball's highest paid player, Rodriguez is in the middle 10-year contract that pays him $252 million US. He currently leads the majors with 16 homers and 46 runs-batted in.
