you didn't have to! frankly, both teams are wildly flawed and in a just world neither would make the playoffs. the Sox offence is fantastic...and good thing because often they've *had* to score 10 runs to win. as much as i've ripped the yanks' staff this year, being that they've been putting it together with virtual duct tape....all in all they've sort of gotten a lot more done than i or they had a right to expect - they've pitched better than boston, that's for sure. can't really explain it via the names but the results are there. Yanks' lineup is still absurdly uneven, as you've got your great front end hitters and a bad bad back end (still can't figure out where to slot Giambi. i'd tend to put him in the bad camp as good pitching will destroy him). getting matt lawton is a plus if only that you don't have to pretend that tony womack isn't/wasn't the worst hitter in the league. cano is also not good. b williams - pick up your guitar, friend (and on a related note: bronson arroyo please put yours down) ironically though...both of these teams could excel in the playoffs where you don't have to be good over the long haul - just a few games at a time. but at this point i'd doubt it. potential team downfalls in the playoffs: Sox trouble: facing a great staff with a patient-enough offence to be able to generate runs -> Oakland NYY trouble: facing a well-rounded staff with a fierce offence -> Cleveland |

wow, this race could literally come down to the final weekend in boston. and maybe for a playoff spot. gotta give the yanks' credit - they've been hauling out pitchers like drummers in spinal tap and they've overall been doing between ok and quite well. don't know how they're staying in it but they are. Brandon McCarthy was awesome yesterday for the chisox. |

oh completely. it was an AFTERNOON game, too! i was in 3rd grade, my parents let me come home early to watch it. i remember spilling a bowl of goldfish crackers when Yaz hit the HR in the 2nd inning. the Dent HR wasn't the full crusher, or even the game winner. Reggie's HR was the difference and there was so much drama in that game.... Piniella duping (i think it was) rick burleson in the 9th on Remy's shot to right - totally lost in the sun. Burleson would've made it to 3rd and then would have scored when Rice hit a deep fly to center. followed by Yaz popping to Nettles to end it. great stuff (in retrospect!). you know, obviously i'm hoping such a scenario never comes close to happening. however if i'm an objective fan, how fucking cool would it be, sort of a "Chapter 3" in the 21st century version of this great rivalry, to have them tie for first? it's not that farfetched, really. i definitely think Cleveland will have a better record than the Yanks but the Sox? hm. we're really hurting. starting pitching (last night excepted) has been pretty good for a little while now. bullpen still rots. so many injuries, now a major one to Damon who really is our catalyst. we shall see... |

amazing, the injuries the Sox have been blitzed with. Damon out, now his backup Kapler out for this and next season. yikes. Damon *might* come back tonight. might. anyways, we're in the middle of an awesome and torrential thunderstorm right now; Fenway is a mile away and i can't even see it. who knows if they'll play tonight. it's a miracle the Sox and Yankees are 1-2. If Roy Halladay and Ted Lilly hadn't gotten hurt this summer, the Jays could have made a run. i think if they're creative this offseason they could challenge next year. |

i just read that he blew it out when he was going home on GRAFFANINO'S home run?????????????????? dayum, that's some aura and mystique right there
Rogers is rumoured to increase their budget by $80 mil. i'm looking forward to it. we already have the toughest division in baseball... let's make it tougher

you haven't seen it? it was wacked. hard not to feel bad for the guy - the HR was a line shot and i was even surprised it went out. Kapler was sprinting as he had no idea it would be out as well, looked to be a probable double. so he's going hard around 2nd and...well, it's hard to tell on what step it happened but i guess the achilles just blew out. he was lying there. my wife and i were (not laughing at kapler but) laughing at graffanino who obviously had no idea what to do - he just stopped. had to be the most unsatisfying HR trot of all time yeah, the new Jays ownership i think pledged a $200 mil increase over the next 3 years overall. of course not all of that would go to FAs as most people would think - a lot of players will go to - and win - arbitration, so their salary for their existing players will rise. but as-constituted they're not far from being a good team (when healthy); hell they gave the Bosox fits all freakin' year. I would think AJ Burnett would be #1 on their list of a weak FA class this offseason. Johnny Damon is the #1 guy but i'd be surprised if the Sox don't resign him. part of me wonders how much the stodgy loser Boston press is spinning the Sox struggles today in the papers. but most of me doesn't care or want to throw my hands up. one thing seems more and more likely: those final 3 games in Fenway might be extremely meaningful to both teams!! |

good post on bostonsportsmedia.net today:
good stuff. the Sox are flawed. we all know it. we'd be bummed if they don't make it, but we'll get over it because a) we won it all last year and 2) i think we all know we've been fortunate to play in a lousy division this year. yet another example of: most Sox fans aren't as psychotic as the psychotic press wants you to believe. it's almost exclusively they themselves and the small yet idiotically vocal contingent that wears Jeter Swallows T-shirts and calls sports radio to scream and yell. |

yeah...i feel that way too sometimes but honestly, just like in a lot of society, the "vocal minority" is a bunch of loudmouth freak asshole fucksticks. just listen to sports radio in ANY CITY IN THE COUNTRY. the home team fans will always sound like the biggest assbags anywhere. |

zoikes! well, we could definitely call this "regression to the mean" as the Sox hitting has really masked their terrible pitching all year. and as happens so many times, when the bats begin to cool off....hey, look what's left! a not-so-great team! ah well - <2 weeks left in a great season - yanks and sox, indians and chokesox (of the white variety!), a's and angels. |
