THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL (MARCH 18, 2013 // 3:37 PM // LUCIANA & ALISTAIR'S HOME // PHILADELPHIA, PA) She laid in bed with the thought of her darling Lily in mind. Luciana's fingers gently caressing the large bump that signified she was pregnant with the heavenly angel that would be one day, Lilian Renee Slayde. She closed my eyes slowly, drifting in and out of a light sleep in the bedroom of the three bedroom home she shared with the father of her child, Alistair. He was downstairs doing lord knows what. Suddenly she felt a hard push in her stomach. Almost like Lilian was pushing down instead of toward her stomach. Lucia furrowed her brows, looking down at her stomach. Her eyes widened when she felt a rush of fluid escape her body and soak her pants. Eyes wide open, she turned on her back, looking down to see it tinged with red. Her water had just broken at twenty-three weeks of pregnancy. "ALI!" she screamed at the top of her lungs, more terrified than she had ever been in her whole entire life. He heard her blood curdling scream from the bedroom, suddenly flipping off the television with a press of a button. He dropped the remote to the floor before running at full speed up the stairs. The door swung open, a sight of watery blood soaking the bed. "What the hell happened, Lucia?! Are you okay?!" he shouted, a tone of worry in his voice. He was unsure what to do, a panicked state that made him start pacing back and forth through the room. Lucia panicked. She gulped, moistening her lips. She felt a contraction. Her whole world was falling down in her mind right now. She was only twenty-three weeks pregnant. The chances of her baby surviving were slim. Very slim. A wincing came from her lips while she tried to take nice breaths and stand up from the bed. "You need to get me to the hospital. This isn't right. This isn't normal. We have to go," she tried to stay calm, if not for herself, for Alistair. "How do I get you to the car?" he asked in a panic, taking deep, heavy breaths. Alistair shook his head, trying to formulate a way to make this easier on everyone involved, and still keep Lily safe from any harm. "Try to get up again, Luce. I'll help you." Lucia attempted to sit back up, only to fall backwards again into Alistair's arm. He held her up, biting his bottom lip as he used all the strenth he could. He grabbed her hand, pulling her to the edge of the bed, her legs danging off the side. "Think you can walk if I hold you up?" he asked her, trying to hold his composure. Closing her eyes, she breathed calmly, or at least as calmly as she could, nodding her head to Alistair as he helped her from the bed. She leaned into him, her hear racing. Tears came to the brim of her eyes as she stared up at the man who helped her create this being, "She's not ready, Ali. She's not ready yet." It didn't matter if she was ready yet or not because she was coming either way. Lucia held onto him as he helped her walk side by side to the bedroom door. She wasn't feeling any contractions again yet, which was good. If they were super close, she was going to have the baby sooner than expected. "When we get in the car, call the hospital. Let them know we're coming," she whispered, trying not to freak out at the moment. "I know she's not ready," he whispered to her, taking a deep breath. "We're not ready either. We're not even close. But that doesn't matter," He counted backwards from three before getting to his feet beside Lucia as she did the same. They strained, slowly walking towards the bedroom door. "Yeah, I'll call. First step is to get you down the stairs, okay? We can't be thinking too far ahead. Not now. For Lily's sake, we need to try to take this one step at a time," his words were calmer still, yet he struggled as they reached the hallway, taking it one step at a time... (MARCH 18, 2013 // 6:02 PM // PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL // PHILADELPHIA, PA) Doctor Matthews stood, placing Lucia's feet out of the stirrups and tossed her gloves to the trash can. The blonde obstetrician sighed, pursing her lips. The terror and shock of this whole situation gave Lucia no sense of awareness when it came to what was going on around her. She wanted Brytain and Syn there. They had to be at Disclosure. She prayed, "Little Lily, please wait for them. Please... please wait for them." "Alright Miss Rossi, we need to make sure that our neonatal intensive care unit is here as soon as you're ready to give birth, as it's already too late to prolong your pregnancy... Your cervix is at a six. You're in active labor right now, doctor Matthews wanted to make sure that Luciana was fully informed about everything that may happen to their child after birth. "I must warn you though. Delivering your baby this early doesn't come without complications. It's nothing any mother wants to hear, but your child's lungs are not fully developed. Chances are she'll be a little over a pound and be under a foot long. She'll need to have help breathing. Eating. Living. She'll be dependent on the NICU and your prayers." The expectant mother lie uncomfortably on her back in the hospital bed. The gown she wore made her feel uncomfortable. The contractions she was having more often made her feel uncomfortable. In no way was she hunky dory happy and comfy. She listened to what her doctor told her, however. Tears rolled down her cheeks. Why couldn't Lily be like normal babies and wait until it was her time to come out and join the world? "Complications with the child's health will be unknown until she is born and we can assess her. I'd like to come in here and tell you that you'll have a perfectly normal child... but I can't confirm this for any child born this early in the pregnancy... I'll check back with you in a little while. Right now, try to get yourself comfortable," as Dr. Matthews left the room, Alistair headed back in with a cup of ice chips. He pull up a chair next to Lucia's bed, handing her the ice chips. Tears rolled down her cheeks. She realized the severity of this situation right here and now after Dr. Matthews explained everything to her and she couldn't help but think there was something she could have done. She did everything she was told regarding her high risk pregnancy. "What if I don't get to hold her, Ali...?" Lucia stare blankly at the wall in front of her before wincing in pain over a contraction. "Isn't her health and survival more important, though? You'll have your chance to hold her, Luce. But for now, she needs to get help breathing. She needs to get help to live. I'll tell you something though. If she's anything like her mother? She'll come out of the nicu swinging, strong as ever," Alistair smiled, trying to get Lucia to smile. It worked for the most part. Lucia did smile, but she was still worried as hell. Worried that her best friend and Lilian's godmother wouldn't make it to the hospital in time. After all, there was two hours to the start of Disclosure and Lucia's cervix was dilated to a six. All she could do was hope... (MARCH 18, 2013 // 10:13 PM // PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL // PHILADELPHIA, PA) She was fully dilated. It was time. Brytain wasn't there. Only Alistair stood next to the bed with his hand in her tight grip. She wasn't ready yet. She would hold this damn baby in until Brytain came. The neonatal intensive care unit was on their way and Lucia was trying not to push on doctor's orders. Lucia gripped his hand tighter, looking up at him with tears in her eyes. "Ali, I need Bryte here! I won't let this baby come out until she's here! When is she going to be here!?" Lucia sobbed before writhing in pain with a loud scream. Doctor Matthews placed Lucia's feet in the stirrups, the nurses sitting her up a bit on the bed. It was time, but Brytain wasn't here. Lucia cried hard, squeezing Alistair's hand in sheer pain and emotional trauma. This was going to happen whether Brytain was here or not. "Lucia, you need to push now," the doctor said calmly, but Lucia shook her head. She shook her head, screaming, as Lily wanted out. Down the hall, sneakers were heard sliding on the tile flooring of the hospital before two breathless beings barged into the delivery room. Brytain and Syn were here. Syn kept his distance while Brytain stood on the other side of Lucia, holding her other hand that wasn't occupied with Alistair. Lucia looked to Brytain, a special moment shared between the two before the doctor told her to begin pushing. After a few pushes, Lucia shook her head and looked at Alistair. "I CAN'T DO IT!" she screamed, still sobbing. A wise pink haired beauty then took the grasp of Lucia's hand, squeezing it tightly, "Luciana Violetta Rossi, you are the strongest woman I know and if anyone can have this baby... It'd be you. NOW FUCKING PUSH!" That was all it took... (MARCH 18, 2013 // 10:25 PM // PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL // PHILADELPHIA, PA) The tiniest shrill came from the most adorable angel that ever graced the planet earth. After she was cleaned and cord was cut, she was immediately place in the incubator, Lucia still crying. Sweaty hair in her face as she watched the nurses rush her little girl off to the NICU, Lucia laid her head back against the pillow, sobbing. Both Brytain and Alistair stood next to her, still clinging hands together while Dr. Matthews cleaned her up. Lucia looked to her left and to her right, even over at Syn in the corner and smiled, still exhausted, "I couldn't have done it without you. All three of you. This is the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I got through it thanks to you. So, I guess what I mean is... Thank you." |
