It’s Chevelle’s first weekend home since his return to the ring. He pulls up into the driveway in his ‘69 Chevelle, letting the engine idle and purr for a couple seconds before he shuts her down and gets out. Chevy’s daughter, Haley, comes running out on the porch with the biggest smile on her face. Cory gets out of the vehicle, doesn’t bother grabbing his gear, Haley’s already running for his arms. He scoops his angel up, twirling her around as he squeezes her as tight as he can without crushing the poor child. After setting Haley down, Cory looks around and something’s off to him. He looks at the door, almost as if he’s expecting one other to come out. She never does though. He doesn’t let Haley see his fear, just looks down at her with a smile.

Chevelle:
Where’s mommy?

Haley:
Daddy, mommy’s not feeling well today I don’t think. She’s just been sleeping all day!

Cory’s eyes widen in disbelief, then turn more into a scowl of frustration.

Chevelle:
All day? What have you been doing, have you even eaten anything today baby girl?

Haley:
Yep! Sure did! I made a Peanut butter and jelly sandwich..allll by myself! Then I watched cartoons..Hey! Daddy! Did you bring me anything?!

Chevelle:
Sorry kiddo..rough week. I’ll bring you something when I come back from Philly, okay? So mommy’s in her room?

Haley nods innocently. Chevelle picks her up and carries her in. Once inside, he sets her down the couch and playfully pats her on the head. Haley remains sitting while watching Scooby-Doo. Cory on the other hand turns around and makes his way down the hall to their bedroom. He slowly cracks open the door, just enough to see Carli. Sure enough, she’s lying in bed. He quietly opens the door and steps in, closing the door behind him. Chevelle goes to the side of the bed where he stands over her, looking down for a moment. He can smell the alcohol. Something happens, something that doesn’t happen often. Cory Chevelle.. Looks ashamed. He turns away, going to the blinds as he opens them up and lets light fill the room. Carli quickly jerks and turns over to escape the light. Cory stands there, shaking his head as Carli starts moving around and waking up.

Chevelle:
Good to see my lil girl’s in such good hands when I’m gone.

Carli:
Hmm? Jesus Cory, close the god damn blinds already! My god..I feel like shit.

Chevelle:
Well that’s too bad. Jesus Carli... look at yourself. You have to stop doing this. How much was it this time? Hmm, how much did you have?

Carli:
I don’t know.. Jesus Christ, would you just let it go. I took Haley over to your mom’s last night and went out with the girls. I just wanted to have some fun! Not a big deal, alright?

Chevelle:
Not a big deal? Carli! Every god damn time I come home you’re either drunk or hung over! It’s almost four o’clock! Haley’s been up and around the house all day BY HERSELF! You... Jesus, forget it!

Carli sits directly up in bed, snapping around to Cory. You can tell she’s ready to fight, but he’s trying to hold it back. He’s telling himself not lose it, don’t let another argument or screaming match start again.

Carli:
No, WHAT CORY?! WHAT?! It’s not like you came home and Haley burnt the house down! Grow up!

Chevelle:
No, she didn’t did she? I guess I didn’t know we were gonna let our eight year old daughter raise herself now so you can go out and get shit faced! Do us both a favor, go back to bed. I’m not dealing with this right now.

Carli:
Nobody’s holding a gun to your head...

Chevelle:
ALRIGHT! You know, you really, REALLY piss me off! What is wrong with you lately? You go out, you drink yourself stupid every night and you pawn Haley off on my parents. What the hell has happened to you?!

Carli:
What the FUCK do you care?! All you care about is WRESTLING! WORKING OUT! YOUR STUPID CAR, YOUR FANS. You don’t give A DAMN about me OR about Haley! So don’t stand there and lecture me Cory! DON’T YOU FUCKING DO IT!

Chevelle shakes his head, taking a long deep breath. He looks back up at Carli, who’s shaking because she’s so mad.

Chevelle:
You’re wrong. That little girl in there..she’s my life. Every night I’m on the road; My prayer, my thoughts, my love.. It’s always gone to the two of you. If you don’t know that, then you’re more blind than I thought Carli. I’m not gonna stand here and do this with you. You think Haley can’t hear us, or do you even care?

Carli:
FUCK YOU! You never want me to do anything! It’s always been about you, and I’m suppose to be the good little wife who just stays home and takes care of your daughter and your house while you’re off parading around as the stupid fucking Silverback!

Chevelle:
Yeah, you’re right, that’s exactly how it is! WILL YOU SHUT THE HELL UP! She is OUR daughter, this is OUR home, and what I do takes care of THIS family! I don’t give a SHIT what you do when I’m gone. You wanna shop? SHOP! You wanna see your friends? FUCKING SEE YOUR FRIENDS! All I ask, is you show some responsibility and make sure Haley’s taken care of Carli. I don’t think that’s asking much...

Carli:
DO NOT...tell me how to take care of my daughter! DO NOT lecture me like you’re all perfect! I’m the one raising her when you’re not around, NOT YOU!

Chevelle:
Really? Huh, shit on me, I couldn’t tell.

Carli:
Oh my God..you’re un-fucking-believable, you know it?! I am so SICK of your bullshit! I’m done. Fucking done! You hear that?! I, Carli Chevelle, am DONE!

Chevelle:
Jesus... I don’t even know you anymore. I’m taking Haley down to the pond. We’re gonna do some fishing. You’re welcome to join after you’ve calmed down, or maybe you wanna just go back to bed.

Cory turns around, leaving the room and closing the door behind him. He makes it about two feet from the door before he hears Carli scream “FUCK YOU!” followed by a loud thud as something bounces off the door. Cory quickly walks into the living room where Haley is sitting. Haley looks up at her dad, worried. She knows something’s wrong with them, just doesn’t know what.

Chevelle:
Well kiddo, mommy’s not feeling very good. How about you and I go fishing?

She smiles at her dad and gets up from the couch, going over and slipping into her shoes.

Haley:
Daddy, will you do it for me so I can catch a big fish?!

Chevelle:
Sure baby.

Cory and Haley go out on the porch and pick up their fishing poles, and start walking down to the pond. On the way down, Haley runs and hops along with excitement. Mean while, Cory thinks about what just happened with Carli. He doesn’t know where this is all coming from, and that’s what bothers him. She hasn’t been herself lately. Maybe she’s tired of him being on the road, maybe she wants more. She’s done nothing but drink lately, and it’s turned her into this cold, heartless, bitch. Every time he comes home he wonders what they’ll fight about. Usually it’s the same thing. Last time he came home, she spent most of the night texting some friend of hers. Chris was his name, a guy Cory’s always known had a thing for her. Anytime Cory brings him up, she gets defensive. He knows what’s going on, or about to. He wishes he could get through to her, but that seems almost impossible anymore.

Cory and Haley come to the pond. Cory sets the tackle box down and starts baiting the poles. Haley is off, standing by the water. She screams from excitement at Cory as she see’s two frogs hop into the water. Cory laughs, then takes her pole over to her. He casts her’s out first, then his own.

Haley:
Daddy.. How come you and mommy were yelling?

Chevelle:
Ah don’t worry about it sweetheart. Sometimes when your old dad’s gone, your mom gets real peculiar.

Haley:
Puh-cew-whaa?

Chevelle:
Heh, nothing kiddo. She just gets kinda weird.

Haley:
Grandpa says she’s got problems. Does she daddy?

Chevelle:
Your grandpa’s just a mean old man sometimes. I ever tell you about the time when I was your age, and one easter your grandpa came in and threw a dead rabbit on the table. Know what he told me? Said Easter was cancelled because he just killed the Easter bunny.

Haley’s eyes widen, she almost drops her pole.

Chevelle:
He didn’t really. It was “joke” as your grandpa put it. Wasn’t funny, made your ole’ dad almost cry.

Haley:
But you never cry!

Chevelle:
Everybody cries baby girl. Some people just know how to hold it in better than others.

Haley:
Do you still cry?

Chevelle:
Absolutely not. Real men don’t cry.

Haley:
But you just said..

Chevelle:
Everyone but your dad cries, kay?

Chevelle gives her a wink and a smile, then jerks back on his pole after feeling a bite. Haley reels hers in and sets her pole down, waiting to see the fish her dad caught. There’s a few flops and splashes in the water, but sure enough, out comes a nice looking bass. He pulls the fish off of the hook and holds it in front of Haley. She jumps up and down, clapping for her dad. Cory stands there laughing for a moment, then the laughter stops. He looks around, expecting to see Carli come down over the hill. She never does.

Cory and Haley continue fishing for another two hours almost, then Cory tells her it’s time to pack it in. They go back up the hill to the house, set their poles on the porch and go inside. There’s no sight of Carli, and the house itself is dead quiet. Cory thinks to himself maybe she’s still sleeping, so he goes back to the bedroom. After opening the door, Carli’s no where to be found. Haley comes running in behind him shouting “Mommy, mommy, mommy! We caught...” and then stops. Her mother’s not there. Haley looks up at her dad puzzled.

Haley:
Daddy...where’s mom?

Chevelle:
She.. I don’t know Haley. Let’s go work on some homework for right now, okay? I’m sure your mom will be back soon.

Chevelle walks into the hallway, but stops. Haley isn’t budging.

Haley:
Mommy was mad.. Wasn’t she? She’s not coming back.... is she.

Chevelle freezes stiff. There’s no reassuring response that he can muster coming to his mind. Haley’s innocent blue eyes start tearing up, but she quickly tries to wipe them away. The silence in the house is suffocating, and it seems like the only sound Cory can hear is the sound of Haley’s heart shattering. He slowly walks up to Haley, crouching down in front of her, and wraps his arms around her as she starts to cry.
