The Royal Rumble (January 28, 2007)


Match 1: The Hardys vs. MNM
-The crowd chanted for the Hardys as the match got underway. Matt tried to get Joey to start it off with him, but Nitro gave Matt a Pearl Harbor job. Mercury tagged in and continued to build momentum with a facebuster across his knee. Nitro tagged in and smashed Matt in the mid-section. Matt tried to fight out of the corner, but Nitro backed him right back into the corner and tagged Mercury. The crowd chanted for Hardy, who gained control of Joey and tagged Jeff, who came into the ring with a slingshot mule kick on Mercury. Nitro eventually got the tag, but Jeff caught him with an inverted atomic drop and double leg drop into the groin area. Matt tagged in and connected on a double back elbow and fist drop combo with Jeff. Mercury tried to come to his partner’s assistance, but Matt dropped him with a vertical suplex. Matt connected with a neckbreaker on Nitro, but Johnny came right back with a hard shot to the jaw. Mercury tagged in and continued to work over Hardy’s jaw/cheeks. The crowd chanted “You Suck” at MNM. Nitro tagged back in and connected with a European uppercut before choking Matt across the second rope. Johnny then locked on a neck vice. Hardy made it to his feet, but Nitro used a high knee lift to maintain momentum. Mercury tagged in and scored a tandem double facebuster with Nitro. Joey mounted Hardy and continued to wail away on Hardy’s face. A short-arm clothesline followed, as MNM were in total control. Mercury then locked on a rear facelock. Hardy fought back to his feet, but Mercury jerked him back to the mat by the hair. Joey went to the second rope and tried for an elbow drop, but Hardy moved and tagged Jeff. Jeff cleaned house and caught Nitro with a split-legged facebuster for a near fall. He followed with the Whisper in the Wind for another near fall, but Joey broke the pin attempt. Matt came to the rescue and dropped Mercury with a back suplex. The Hardys then hit a double suplex on Nitro and went up to the top ropes of opposite corners. They went for the Event Omega and while Matt scored with his leg drop, Nitro got his knees up on Jeff’s splash. Mercury came in and started working over Jeff’s mid-section. Joey scored with a running knee lift for a near fall. Jeff tried to get to his corner, but Mercury backed him into the heel corner. Nitro tagged in and connected on a running knee lift in the corner. Nitro then kicked Hardy in the gut and tagged Mercury. MNM hit a double leg drop combo to Jeff’s mid-section and throat. Mercury applied a waist lock, but Jeff fought out and scored a near fall with a roll-up. Joey stayed on him, though, and continued to work over the mid-section. Nitro tagged in and scored a double gutbuster with Joey. Johnny eventually caught Jeff in a body scissors. Hardy fought out of the hold, but Nitro used a front facelock to keep him subdued. Jeff inched toward his corner, but Nitro kept him back. Hardy stayed with it and flipped Nitro over his head to make the hot tag, but Joey distracted the ref. The ref, thus, disallowed the tag to Matt. MNM took advantage and continued to isolate Jeff. Nitro tried to connect with another running knee lift in the corner, but Jeff pushed Mercury in the way of the move. Hardy made the hot tag to Matt, who came in and cleaned house. He caught MNM with a combination bulldog and clothesline and scored with an elbow drop off the second rope on Nitro. MNM recovered and went for the Snap Shot, but Jeff intervened. The Hardys then caught Mercury with Poetry in Motion. They tried to do the same to Nitro, but Johnny moved and caught Matt w/ a surprise roll-up for a close near fall. Matt came back with the Twist of Fate on Nitro. Mercury and Matt fought to the outside, but Jeff got the blind tag and hit the Swanton Bomb on Nitro for the win. The Hardys defeated MNM at 15:27. (CMV1 rating- *** ¼) (CMV1 note- really good tag team match…these four continue to show why tag wrestling can add a lot to the shows)


Backstage, Kelly, Coach, and Teddy Long ran the Rumble number drawing. Kelly introduced herself to Edge as he walked into the room. Randy Orton walked in and flirted with her after Edge made fun of her name. Orton said he’d throw Edge over the top rope again tonight. Edge wanted to see Orton’s number. He said “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.” King Booker walked in and did his old “Tell me you didn’t just say that” catchphrase.

Match 2: ECW Champion Bobby Lashley vs. Test
-A lock-up started it off…a lengthy lock-up. Test backed Lashley into the corner and smacked Bobby. Lashley didn’t take too kindly to it and tackled Test to the mat. Test came back and threw Lashley throat first across the second rope. He choked Bobby with his boot and backed him into the corner for a series of back elbow smashes. Lashley came back with a T-Bone suplex and a delayed vertical suplex. Test rolled to the outside to regain his composure. The Impact Player got back in the ring and pushed Lashley, who was on the apron, into the ring post. Back in the ring, Test scored a near fall and locked on an armbar. The crowd was pretty dead at that point. Lashley eventually got his feet, but Test scored with an armbreaker across his shoulder and reapplied the armbar. Test dug his knee into Bobby’s shoulder and once again locked on the armbar. Lashley battled back to his feet again and connected with a back body drop. He followed with a series of running shoulder thrusts in the corner and went for a guerilla press slam, but botched it and sold the shoulder injury. Test capitalized with a running big boot for a close near fall. He went for the TKO, but Lashley countered and scored with a belly-to-belly suplex. Test rolled to the outside soon after. The ref counted him out. Lashley attacked him and threw him back in the ring. Bobby dropped Test with a running powerslam. Lashley retained the title via count-out at 7:10. (CMV1 rating- *) (CMV1 note- Slow, boring match with way too little action for such a short match. These two, after seeing them wrestle twice now, do not work well together and need to improve their chemistry if they want to keep this feud going)


Backstage, a doctor was checking out John Cena to make sure his abdomen was okay. Vince McMahon walked in and said he didn’t think Cena would be able to retain the title.

Match 3: World Heavyweight Champion Batista vs. Mr. Kennedy
-Kennedy dodged Batista’s advances, but then went into a lock up with him and got pushed halfway across the ring. Batista backed him into the corner, but Kennedy ducked behind the ropes and gave him a cheap shot to the knee. Ken rolled him up for a quick near fall, but Batista backed him into the corner again and caught him with a shoulder thrust. Mr. Kennedy scored with a thumb to the eye, but Batista came back with a big boot and a vertical suplex. Kennedy rolled to the outside and Batista followed. Bats tossed him into the guardrail, but Kennedy came back and threw Batista into the steel steps. Batista, favoring his knee, used a barrage of simplistic offense (back in the ring) to build momentum. Kennedy went back to work on the knee, though, and built some momentum of his own. The challenger used a wide array of moves to work of the champion’s knee. Kennedy locked on a reverse Figure Four of sorts (nice looking move). Batista grabbed the ropes to break the hold. Ken kept working over the knee and got admonished by the ref. With his lip/nose busted open, Kennedy scored with two running knee strikes and earned a near fall. He dragged Batista to the center of the ring and locked on a half Boston Crab. Batista struggled for quite awhile before inching toward the ropes. Kennedy dragged him back to the center of the ring, so Batista rolled thru and surprised Kennedy with a roll-up for a near fall. Batista tried to follow with a powerslam, but Kennedy countered and struck the leg again. Kennedy tried to completely regain momentum, but Batista caught him with a spinebuster. Batista got fired up with a series of clotheslines and a standing back body drop. He sold the knee injury and awkwardly connected with a body slam. The champion followed with a rolling Senton Drop and called for the sit-out powerbomb. Kennedy blasted Batista in the knee to break the finisher attempt and ended up knocking over the ref. The challenger followed with a neckbreaker, but the ref couldn’t make the count. He followed with a DDT for a close near fall. The crowd chanted for Kennedy, who went to the second rope looking for a clothesline. Batista countered and hit a clothesline of his own. The finish came when the champion scored the pinfall following the Batista Bomb. Batista retained the title at 10:30. (CMV1 rating- **) (CMV1 note- it had it’s awkward moments, but they definitely tried to have a good match. Kennedy really shined and won over the live crowd with his efforts. Batista was sloppy, but at the end of the day it all equated to an average championship match. I was entertained)


Backstage, Kevin Thorn and Ariel left the Rumble number drawing looking as happy as their characters can. Little Bastard came in and grabbed a ball, presumably for Finlay. Coach made a sly remark, so the LB attacked him and bit his ear. Great Khali walked in, prompting the LB to run away. He tried to take more than one ball. Kelly picked up the two balls that Khali dropped and said they were the biggest balls she’d ever held. Farooq walked in for his signature “Damn!”


“The Marine” comes out on DVD this Tuesday…

Match 4: Last Man Standing Match: WWE Champion John Cena vs. Umaga (w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada)
-They stared each other down as the opening bell sounded. Umaga pushed the champ, but Cena came back with a series of punches. Cena then countered a body slam into a jawbreaker, but Umaga blasted him in the gut so hard that it sent the champ to the outside. Umaga punched Cena off the apron and followed him to the outside. The Samoan Bulldozer tossed the champ into the steel steps. As the crowd chanted for Cena, the ref counted to five. Cena reached feet, but Umaga promptly punched him up the entrance ramp. The champ fired back and punched Umaga back to the ringside area. Cena threw Umaga face-first into the apron, but Umaga struck back quick with a quick back-handed strike to the gut. The challenger gave the champ a headbutt and a kick to the mid-section. Umaga then struck Cena in the back before driving his shoulder into the champ’s gut. Cena fought back with a boot to the face, but Umaga dropped him with a clothesline soon after. The ref counted to six before Cena made it to his feet. Umaga bodyslammed the champ and retrieved the top part of the steel steps from the outside. Cena hung Umaga’s neck over the top rope, grabbed the steel steps, and threw them at the Samoan (who was on the outside). Boom! The steps caught Umaga in the face. The ref counted to six before Umaga made it to his feet. Cena went after him with a series of clubbing blows. Back in the ring, Umaga regained momentum with a spinning wheel kick. He went back to work on Cena’s mid-section with a bear hug. The champ struggled to get out of the hold, but Umaga gave him a belly-to-belly suplex out of the bear hug. Umaga went outside and grabbed the other part of the steel steps, as the ref counted to eight. Cena got to his feet, as the crowd chanted that they wanted tables. Umaga, meanwhile, propped the steel steps against the turnbuckle. He placed Cena up against them in sitting position and went for his running rear strike. Cena moved out of the way, though, sending the challenger back-first into the steel. The champ proceeded to blasted Umaga in the head with the steps, prompting a six-count from the ref. Cena went to the top rope and went for a flying cross body block, but Umaga caught him and slammed him to the mat with a tilt-a-whirl Rock Bottom. Umaga used a series of jumping Banzai drops to work over Cena’s mid-section, but he went to the well one too many times. Cena got his knees up on the last attempt and followed with a running Throwback that sent Umaga’s face into the steps. The champ followed with the Prototype spinning back drop onto the steps and the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena went for the FU, but couldn’t complete his finisher due to the injured mid-section. The ref counted to eight, but a now bloody Cena made it to his feet. A “Cena Sucks” chant rang out for a short time, but the champ’s fans countered with a small “Cena” chant. Umaga punched Cena until the champ fell to the mat. The ref counted to eight before Cena made it to his feet. Dueling Cena chants broke out. Cena eventually got fired up, but Umaga halted the momentum shift with a Samoan Drop (didn’t land well either). Umaga went for the Samoan Spike, but Cena blocked it. The Samoan headbutted the champ and hung him up in the tree of woe in the corner. Umaga went for a running headbutt, but Cena sat up, climbed to the top rope, and scored with a modified flying Fame-ass-er. Cena tossed Umaga shoulder-first into the ring post and went to the outside to get a TV monitor. The champ then blasted Umaga in the head with the monitor. Umaga made it to his feet by an eight-count, but Cena knocked him out of the ring. Cena followed and tried for double axe-handle off the apron, but Umaga caught him and drove him into the ring post. The challenger set Cena up on the ECW announce table. He went over to the Raw table, jumped from it to the SD table, and flew off looking for a splash thru Cena and the ECW table. However, Cena moved at the last second, sending Umaga splashing thru the table with no one there to cushion his fall. The ref counted to nine, but Umaga made it to his feet. Cena looked dejected, as AAE literally took off the top rope to expose the ring posts in the corner. Umaga, meanwhile, blasted Cena in the gut. He tried to use the removed turnbuckle as a weapon, but Cena ducked it and dropped the challenger with the FU. He knocked Armando out of the way and blasted Umaga with the aforementioned turnbuckle. As the crowd chanted his name, Cena choked Umaga with the top rope. The ref started his count, but Umaga got up. Cena choked Umaga with the ropes once again. 1…2…3…4…5…6…7…8…9…10! Cena retained the title at 23:20. (CMV1 rating- ****) (CMV1 note- Damn! That was quite an impressive effort from these guys. They got creative and used the gimmick to its fullest extent. The top rope removal was one of the more creative things I’ve seen in a gimmick match in a long time)


A Wrestlemania promo featuring the wrestlers flashing back to their childhood Mania fantasies was shown.


Backstage, Sandman came into get his number, drank a beer, and slammed himself in the face with a Singapore cane. Ric Flair came into get his number. Kelly and the ECW divas started dancing on him with the lights turned down. Flair let out a “WOO!”


The King joined JBL and Cole to help call the Royal Rumble…

Match 5: The Royal Rumble Match
-Ric Flair was the #1 entrant. Finlay was #2. They locked up, with Finlay grabbing a headlock. They locked up again, with Finlay backing Flair into the corner and wailing away on the 16-time champ. Flair came back with a series of knife-edge chops. Finlay countered with a back body drop and tried to eliminate the Nature Boy. Flair raked Finlay’s eyes and avoided being tossed. Kenny Dykstra was in next. He promptly got chopped several times by Flair. Finlay caught Flair with a running forearm out of nowhere. The Irishman tried to quickly eliminate Kenny, but Dykstra held on. Flair tried to toss both of them, but Finlay and Kenny held on. Matt Hardy was #4 and went after Kenny. He scored with the Side Effect, as Flair nearly eliminated Finlay. Matt almost tossed Kenny, but Dykstra held on by the toes of his boots. Hardy and Finlay then paired up in one corner, as Flair and Kenny paired up in the opposite corner. Matt nearly had Finlay dumped over the top, as Edge came in at #5. Edge speared Flair and Finlay. He tried to give Matt a spear, but Hardy countered and hit the Twist of Fate. Flair rolled to the outside and grabbed a chair to use on Edge. Kenny knocked the chair out of the ring. Dykstra and Edge teamed up to toss out Flair, and then Edge surprised Kenny and eliminated him. Tommy Dreamer was in next and he immediately placed Edge in the tree-of-woe. Finlay dropped Dreamer with a jumping clothesline. Matt nearly eliminated Edge in one corner, as Dreamer nearly got pushed out in the other. Sabu was the next entrant and he got a table out from under the ring and set it up on the outside. He went after Dreamer once he got in the ring and botched a springboard DDT. Edge, meanwhile, worked over Finlay. The crowd chanted for Sabu. Edge nearly eliminated Finlay, as Hardy almost knocked out Sabu. CW Champion Gregory Helms went after Hardy after coming in as the 8th entrant. Sabu nearly tossed Finlay, but the Irishman landed on the apron. Dreamer tried to toss Edge, as Helms tried to push out Hardy. Finlay got Sabu in fireman’s carry position and tried to toss him over the top, but Sabu held on. Sabu then tried to eliminate Helms. Shelton Benjamin was next and went right to work on Hardy. He then tried to toss Dreamer and Hardy (on separate occasions). If they had been eliminated, they’d have ended up going thru Sabu’s table. However, both held on for dear life and avoided elimination. Hardy tried to toss Finlay. Edge-Helms, Sabu-Dreamer, and Shelton-Matt all paired up and fought all over the ring. Kane was the 10th entrant. He cleaned house and went after everybody. Kane gave Helms a nice powerslam, Edge a chokeslam, and then eliminated Dreamer. He tried to eliminate Sabu, as well, but Sabu countered. Kane eventually got Sabu on the apron and gave him a chokeslam thru the table, eliminating him in the process. CM Punk was #11. He went after Edge. Finlay went right after Punk and almost eliminated him. Kane almost kicked out Shelton. CM Punk gave Edge a running knee lift in the corner and tried to toss him over. Finlay gave Edge an assist and attacked Punk. King Booker was up next. Booker went after Helms and eliminated the CW champ. He then set his sights on Punk and tried to eliminate him. Finlay and Hardy, meanwhile, tried to toss Kane. Kane easily avoided elimination and choked Finlay with his boot. Booker and Shelton tried to eliminate Punk. Crazy was the next entrant, but he quickly fell victim to Kane’s attacks. The Big Red Machine turned his attention to Edge. Hardy and Benjamin worked over Crazy, while Booker and Finlay renewed their budding rivalry. Jeff Hardy was up next. The Hardys teamed up and gave Finlay a double suplex. They then gave Edge a double back elbow-fist drop-rolling Senton combo. Crazy was their next victim, as they gave him a combo back drop. Kane tried to give the Hardys a double chokeslam, but they countered and back him into the corner for Poetry in Motion. Sandman was the 15th entrant and he came in thru the crowd. Wielding a cane, the Sandman blasted everyone he could see until Booker quickly eliminated him. Jeff skinned the cat when Finlay tried to toss him over the top. CM Punk did the same.

Randy Orton was up next. Orton and Edge teamed up to eliminate Crazy. Randy hit Matt Hardy with his unique backbreaker. The tag champs then eliminated the Hardys. Edge turned his attention to Punk, as Orton went after Shelton. Booker and Finlay teamed up to try and toss out Kane. Benoit was the next entrant. The US Champ went after Finlay, Orton, and Edge with knife-edge chops. He then went after Booker before giving Finlay a German suplex. Meanwhile, Benjamin had Punk reeling on the apron. Booker tried to catch Benoit with his arm wrench and hook kick combo, but Benoit countered into a German suplex. Finlay tried to toss Benoit, but the Crippler hung on. Punk nearly eliminated Shelton. RVD was up next. He went wild with a barrage of kicks and karate strikes. The crowd chanted for Van Dam, as Kane tossed King Booker. Booker came back in and gave Kane a jumping leg lariat and an axe kick. He then eliminated Kane illegally, but it counted. Viscera was up next. Booker continued to hammer away at Kane on the outside. Viscera went after Edge. Orton-Punk, Finlay-Benoit-RVD, and Viscera-Edge-Shelton were all involved with each other in opposite corners. Viscera turned his attention to Orton. Johnny Nitro was #20. He tried to toss Van Dam, but RVD hung on. Viscera went after Punk, as the tag champs teamed up on Nitro. Shelton almost got eliminated, but held onto the bottom rope with his feet just inches away from the floor. Kevin Thorn was next, and we went after Shelton. Viscera nearly eliminated RVD, with a little help from Nitro, but Van Dam countered and tried to clothesline Viscera over the top. Finlay had been in the ring for 30-minutes. Nitro scored a dropkick on Benjamin. Holly was #22. Shelton tried to use a slingshot to eliminate RVD, but Van Dam held on for dear life. Meanwhile, everyone tried to eliminate Viscera. HBK was up next. He caught Finlay with a Lou Thesz press and gave him an inverted atomic drop before tossing him over the top. Everyone else teamed up to eliminate Viscera. HBK then eliminated Shelton. Holly went after Michaels. Chris Masters was the next entrant. Masters went after RVD. Rated-RKO teamed up to try and take out HBK. Benoit eliminated Nitro. HBK took control of Edge in the corner. Masters went after Punk. Thorn and Benoit started fighting. Rated-RKO regained control on HBK. Chavo Guerrero was up next. He went after Masters, as Benoit tossed out Thorn. Holly tried to eliminate Benoit. Punk and RVD found themselves on the turnbuckle in one of the corners. HBK, meanwhile, had taken control of Rated-RKO. Chavo caught Masters with a European uppercut. MVP was #26 and he quickly fell victim to a Benoit and HBK double team. RVD dropkicked Masters over the top rope to eliminate him. JBL called Masters an orangutan. Punk found himself on the apron getting hammered by Orton. Carlito entered at lucky #27, the entry number of the most Rumble winners. There were 11 men in the ring. RVD almost tossed HBK, but Michaels landed on the apron. Chavo and Van Dam tried to kick him out, but HBK held on for dear life. Orton and Edge ganged up on Carlito. Khali was up next and everyone got themselves poised to attack him. Van Dam and Edge were easily pushed out of the way. Khali gave everyone in sight a headbutt, as the crowd sat on their hands. The crowd gave literally zero reaction to Khali. Nonetheless, Khali used his killer chop to knock out every superstar remaining. Khali proceeded to eliminate Holly, Benoit, Miz (the 29th entrant), RVD, Punk, Carlito, and Chavo. HBK attacked Khali, but the big man gave him his chokeslam. Taker was the #30 entrant. Khali stood in the ring and waited for Taker. Everyone else was lying around. Taker went after Khali and gave him everything he had. Khali started to fight back and went for the chokeslam, but Taker punched him toward the ropes and eliminated him. The Deadman went on to knocked down Orton, Edge, and MVP. He gave MVP the Old School top rope clothesline and eliminated him. MVP brought a chair into the ring. Orton grabbed the chair and blasted Taker with it. As Orton taunted Taker, Edge geared up for the spear. As Edge ran toward Orton, Randy turned around and held up the chair. They argued in the middle of the ring. HBK came up behind Orton, but Randy quickly put him down with the RKO. Rated-RKO regrouped and went after Taker, as HBK rolled under the bottom rope and out of the ring. Edge and Orton pummeled Taker and posed together, but the Deadman came back and went for a double chokeslam. Rated-RKO countered, but Taker stayed with it and gave them a double clothesline. Taker caught Edge with snake eyes (in the corner) and a running big boot. He then tried to give Orton a chokeslam, but Edge caught him with a spear. Edge grabbed a chair and blasted Taker between the eyes. HBK was still on the outside. Edge grabbed another chair and Rated-RKO set up the Deadman for a conchairto. HBK came back and eliminated both Orton and Edge. Taker and HBK both laid on their backs. As Taker sat up, HBK kipped up! Undertaker was busted open. HBK tried his best to take control, but Taker caught him with an uppercut that nearly sent Michaels over the top rope. Michaels came back with a series of chops. Taker threw him into the corner and sent Michaels feet-over-head flipping in the corner. Michaels ended up on the apron. Taker tried to catch him with a running big boot to knock him to the floor, but HBK moved. Taker ended up on the apron. HBK tried to knock him off, but Taker caught him with a back elbow. Michaels and Taker traded moves. Taker tried to toss HBK over the top, but Michaels landed on the apron. Shawn climbed to the top rope, but Taker met him up there. They fought tooth-and-nail and teetered back and forth. HBK nearly fell to the floor. Michaels fought back and knocked Taker to the mat. HBK then flew off the top and dropped the elbow. He geared up for Sweet Chin Music. Taker blocked the superkick and gave him a chokeslam. The Deadman signaled for the Tombstone. The crowd chanted for HBK. Michaels countered the Tombstone and drilled him with the super kick! This is great! HBK geared up for another kick, but Taker ducked it and used HBK’s momentum to send him careening over the top rope and to the floor. Undertaker won the Royal Rumble at 56:21. (CMV1 rating- **** ¼) (CMV1 note- That was one hell of a final 8-minutes. I can’t recall a more entertaining finish to the Rumble match. Taker and HBK gave it their all in those final minutes and really helped elevate what I thought was an otherwise ordinary Rumble match)

It was pretty entertaining in all!

I'd figured as soon as Cole said no-one had ever entered at number 30 and won that, whomever entered at 30 would win! And that when Taker was 30 he would win, as he will get one last final win and reign at WM23 then back off a bit. Taker did look very healthy though I thought!

From reading the results, I was quite surprised how everything turned out. I wasn't surprised about the way the ECW World Championship match panned out. Lashley has been dragging ass lately, but his fellow co workers have been making him look good. Mr Kennedy was impressive but he still isn't ready for the big time yet. The stars of the night, were John Cena and Umaga for their outstanding permorance in the last man standing match. As for the Hardys, they're clearly the best tag team in the WWE and they proved that to MNM last night. Overall, I say the 2007 Royal Rumble was a decent ppv.
