After a run of Grand Final disappointments for the Nuriootpa Bowling Club our star studded women’s side have broken the run of outs to claim the Barossa and Light Bowling Association’s pennant last Thursday morning. The Nuri girls have now won three flags in a row to emerge as the dominant side in the Barossa and Light competition. Premiership victory was never going to be easy as our girls were up against a talented line up from Freeling who played a top standard of lawn bowls on the day. After the dust had settled, however, our girls managed to finish 11 shots ahead with three rinks up in a great team effort. The Nuri bowlers were full of praise for the superb condition of the Lyndoch green which rolled beautifully considering the rain earlier in the week. Many of the Premiership players were seen celebrating late into the evening at the Tiger Clubhouse and then kicked on to the Angas Park Hotel to thank our loyal sponsor for their support.

The very next evening the Nuri Clubrooms were packed to the rafters for the Tiger’s annual Presentation Night. Buoyed by the Ladies success the mood of the evening was jubilant. After Club President, Roger Mattschoss, made his welcoming address, Gwen White presented Ron Graetz with his Super Veteran’s Badge. Ron has represented both the Nuriootpa and Tanunda Bowling Clubs with great distinction and his award was well received by the gathering. President Roger then proceeded to present the Nuri club achievement awards for season 2008 / 2009. Highlight of the evening was Margaret Fiebig’s presentation of the John (Sam) Fiebig Memorial Trophy to Club Singles Champion Rob Grope. Rob has now won the Club Championship a record 7 times to confirm his status as Nuriootpa’s greatest ever bowler.

Presentations were also made to –
Colin Baker – Singles runner-up.
Geoff Langley and Rob Grope – Men’s Pairs Champions.
Don Bessell – Chapman Trophy
Kevin Harrison – Chapman Trophy runner-up.
Pam Jones – Women’s Champion.
Rhonda Blazer – Singles runner-up.
Mitzi Elix and Anne Shoesmith – Women’s Pairs Champions.
Jill Chapman – 100 up winner.
Denise Baker, Mitzi Elix, Ursula Boettger and Moira Mckeough – Association Women’s Fours Champions.
Stuart Forbes, Ron Ellis, Chris Jones and Lloyd Tscharke – Association Men’s Fours Champions.
Kerry Milne, Tony Schultz, Mitch Milne and Graham Hill – Night Owls Winners.

Members of the Nuri bowling Club wish to congratulate Mel and Chris Fletcher at the recent arrival of baby Mallica Mae. Congratulations are also in order to proud, first time, grand parents, Val and Rob Grope.

Members are reminded that the club will hold it’s Annual General Meeting on Monday 11th May at 7.30 p.m. Contact President Roger Mattschoss if you can help your club by filling one of the key positions next season.
