We are heading off to Bowring Park for a walk and some sliding....just wondering are there ducks there in the winter?? I know when we went a couple of summers ago when we were home for a visit you could not feed them bread anymore....where can you buy the feed if in fact they are there in the winter?? |

They are there in winter! I usually stop somewhere like jumbo and pick up a big bag of popcorn or make some myself before going... popcorn is a perfectly fine duck food. Maries used to sell the little bags of feed... not sure if they still do! |

We just give them mixed bird seed since we always have it in the house for our bird feeders... I'm pretty sure some people feed them popcorn as well but I'm not sure if that is popped or un-popped! Bread to ducks is like chips or a chocolate bar to us, and apparently is bad for the lake environment. |

Actually there are signs ( or there was the summer), saying that you're not suppose to feed ducks popcorn. Apparently, it has no nutritional value. We use to go to Maries and get the little bags of food for the ducks. |

Actually that's BREAD that was listed on the sign not to feed... bread has no nutritional value and can cause dehydration. Popcorn used to be listed on the sign as ok... along with romaine lettuce and a few other things. They may have changed it... I'll have take a look and see if they have changed the signs. I wonder how long before they go to a strict no feeding rule... many places have changed to that! Mundy Pond is closest to us and we walk them often... but it's mostly gulls we feed there hehehe |

Bird seed actually has pieces of kernels of corn in it, but I have heard before that it offers little to no nutrition for ducks. I know that you can buy duck food at the botanical gardens in season, I'm not sure if their shop is open during the off season or not. Many bags of mixed bird food now even say, "corn free" on the packaging. 1 bag of bird food will feed lots and lots of ducks... I think it would be much too difficult to enforce a no-feed policy, and then the ducks would likely not get enough during the winter months! It's just a matter of educating people what is okay to feed them, I don't frequent Bowring park so have no idea what they say, maybe backhomemom saw them there??? |

Thanks Ladies - but after I posted this my brother, sil, and niece and nephew showed up and we had an awesome day out in the backyard. We built snow forts with tons of tunnels, had a snowball fight, the kids were sliding, snowshoeing, we did colored water in spray bottles and in the end we built a great snowman - basically we were out there for hours and had a great time!
:D Hopefully we will make it to the Park next week and I'll be sure to check the sign....!! |
