Hi, I was just wondering if anybody knows when i should be contacted for my daughters assesment. She is 3 years old, her b-day is in July. You know the assessment they get from the public health people? No one has contacted me yet. Someone has told me that they should have called me by now. Anyone been contacted for their child yet? Thanks...Leah |

well Evan turned three back in june he has had his, it was a couple months ago, maybe september. Call Health and Community services they should be able to get something set for you. I guess your little one must have had vaccinations at the doctors clinic? |

Most likely... if your getting the vaccs done at the public health office they generally book the future appointment at the current appointment... kwim? I also suggest you just give them a call! |

They have changed the pre-school health check from age 3 to age 4, but the 3 year olds don't get needles. I'm not sure if the 4 year olds do or not. You could call, but we didn't get an appointment for Julia's until the month of her birthday. Do 4 year olds get needles at their pre-school check?? I thought they waited until kindergarten began. Julia hasn't had any needles since 18 months... Katherine |

According to the current Immunization schedule for Newfoundland ... after 18months the next needles are in the range of age 4-6. I guess you have that window to get them done! Here is a link to the schedule... it's for all of canada and each province is slightly different so make sure you scroll down to NL. http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/im/ptimprog-pro.../table-1_e.html |

Yeah, they keep changing when these checks get done. First they were at 4 so they would get their needles at the same time, then they changed them to 3, now to 4 again! So any kids who had the pre school health check at 3 have to get a different appointment to get their needles that are for ages 4-6. Katherine |

thanks so much ladies, i'm a big worrier and I've been worrying about this a lot lately. I don't know anyone else with small children, so i have no one to ask about these things. I am happy that i now have a place to turn. Leah |

I'm so glad they moved the preschool check... For my DD (6) they didn't have it because they were moving it from 4 to 3 (no child born in 2000 or 2001 had the preschool health check) and now they realize that 3 year olds are not developmentally ready for many of the tests they did and the Janeway is flooded with false referrals so they are moving it back to 4, where it should be. Ack. The problem they said was that the wait list for services is so long that if the kids are referred at 4 then they can't get in for services before they start school. So, the solution was to move the check back to 3 instead of addressing the real problem, which was wait times. I waited until my DS was almost 4 and they were bugging me to come in (they called me, BTW, but he did have his immunizations at public health so he was on their reminder system.) He did fine in everything except for his speech (which I expected). I got a referral for speech therapy, it has been close to a year and we are still wait listed. I'm hoping for the summer - if I don't get him in I'll have to go the private route. It is just so expensive! |

when charlet regesterd for school what they did was had a " pre school check up fair" at community healkth they did differnt schools on different days . they went through different "stations" where they got everything they needed . we already knew what she needed because shes a little behind & had been followed by the nurse since she was born . but thats what they did they get their lists from the schools & yup theres a needle at 4 but if your concerned just give them a call. |

I've never heard of these assessments?? Are they mandatory or optional? I usually just bring the kids to the Family Dr. on thier bdays for an annual checkup. |

I'm not sure if they are mandatory, but if your child was born here they are automatically followed by community health for their vaccinations and well-baby checks. At the pre-school one they check their hearing, vision, coordination, ability to follow instructions, etc. It is very tiring for a 3 year old which I assume is why they've moved it back to 4 again. You could always call public health and check, They will probably take your children's names so that you can be contacted when it's time for needles or health screenings or whatever else they do. |

Would have been good to know - I just took Logan to the eye dr with me last weekend. Our ins only covered $30 for the check-up and it cost $55.......you think the eye dr would have mentioned it to me. In Ontario you have to have all of those things done before they start school yourself.... |

They do still recommend that you see an eye doctor though, since it is a nurse who performs the check and they are not as qualified as an optometrist! The nurse would be unlikely to diagnose lazy eye in it's early stages, or an astigmatism. The pre school health check mostly tests that both eyes are equal in what they can see and that they can match things up when seen far away and on the sheet in front of them. Do you feel better now about going? :) |
