My little guy will start kinder start in September. I am just wondering how it all works. Also does anyone have any opinions of what school they like best in St. John's /mount Pearl. I am willing to move for the boys to go to a good school. We are only renting our house anyways.

I'm not sure, my kids will go to St. Francis of Assissi which I heard was great!

Does anybody know what they are expected to know for kindergarten? I heard there is A LOT to know... Julia refuses to believe me when I tell her which letters are which. Stubborn 3 year olds. blah.

An interesting tidbit! Did you know Kindergarten is not compulsory here??? I had no idea until a few months ago it came up on another board. The province is legislated to provide access to kindergarden, and it is therefore mandated for every school to have a kindergarden class. But it is not actually compulsory for us to send our children.

Wow, didn't know that about kindergarten. My husband and I am actually considering homeschooling our daughter. There are so many problems with the schools in this province, not the least of which is the deplorable condition of many schools making them unsafe for our children to be in. Also, there seems to be a lack of encouragement for individuality. Does anyone out there homeschool their kids or know or anyone who does? Looking for any comments.

My 2 older kids go to Lakecrest Independent School. I can't say enough good things! And they have a Full day KDGT program! Tara is in Grade 9, Noah is in Grade 1 and Caden starts Kdgt in the fall.

And they offer Advanced math and science in grade 8 and 9, so when my daughter starts grade 10 at public school next yr (Lakecrest only goes up to grade 9) she will already have completed the grade 10 math and science allowing her to do grade 11 math and science.

I didn't know that about kindergarted either. My son is attending Topsail Elementary, in the french immersion program. He loves it and is doing really well with the french. my dd starts in the fall and has already learned alot of french stuff from her brother.

I like the school, same problems as everywhere else on the island, not enough teachers, overcrowded classrooms. The teachers are doing the best that they can with what they have.

My hat goes off to all the teachers, I could NEVER do what they do!

My kids are at Bishop Feild in French Immersion (well, DS is doing kinderstart there now) and I love it there. It is a hidden jewel in the downtown - much more of a family feel, an artsy feel, a really amazing mix of kids... I have had a fantastic experience there so far. The class sizes are great - there are 21 kids in DD's Grade 1 class, and as it continues on I'm sure it will be less. In her class, you have children of profs, politicians, lawyers, doctors, immigrants, artists, you name it. I haven't regretted my decision to put her there for one second (YET! I'm sure I will be tangling with teachers before too long!)

My son has started the KinderStart program at Topsail Elementary, it however, did not start until Jan - unlike the school your child will be attending where it starts in September. He loved it and did not want me to stay with him - probably because he has been going to preschool for 2 years now and his ideas about school do not include Mom!!!

I just work on basic skills like cutting, shapes, letter, numbers, and colors - I'm also lucky because Early Acheivers is a great help in having him prepared and ready for the classroom.

I think its great kindergarden is not mandatory here. Amber is 4 1/2 but really not ready. She is about 2 years behind in all areas, so we decided to keep her out of school until sept. 2008.

There was an ad in the paper for one of the private schools recently about registration for 2008 and it said on the bottom that there were still a few places for 2006. It wouldn't hurt to call
