Waiting for the night to fall

In mid October of 2014 a lone Inuit elder was found wandering in the Nunavut province of Canada. The man showed signs of extreme exposure to the elements and was nearly catatonic. Despite being rushed to the nearest medical facility, the man soon slipped into a coma and eventually died. Subsequent investigation revealed that he had been retained a month earlier to serve as a guide for a group of filmmakers wanting to make a documentary of the wildlife in the Coburg Island National Wildlife Area. Found among his effects were a journal written by one of the crew members as well as a small gold figurine in the form of a bear and a single silver coin with what appeared to be runic markings. Speculation as to their origins ran rampant with many people convinced that these could only have come from the mythical Kingdom of Saguenay. The government quickly organized a search and rescue party to look for the missing crew and to also investigate the origin of the relics - which according to the journal had been found on Devon Island, just to the west of the nature preserve. The search party traveled to Iqaluit, where they spent 2 days waiting on the weather to clear enough for a helicopter to carry them to the remote island. On the evening before their departure they had a celebratory meal at The Parkplace Pub, where they all enjoyed caribou stew and moussaka. Their departure the next morning would prove to be the last time that many of the members were to be seen alive by anyone not involved in the mission. After being airlifted to the island on Halloween, the party quickly made camp for the night and looked forward to beginning their search the following morning. Dawn of 1 November brought with it tragedy though, and it served as a foreshadowing of the nightmare that was to come. As members of the party began to rise from their individual tents it was discovered that one of the tents had been severely shredded during the night. Inside the tent, the group leader, Ess, was found horribly maimed and partially eaten. To add to the devastation, their short wave radio had been destroyed as well. A logbook offered a clue as to what had happened. It appeared that Ess had been woken very early in the morning by an emergency broadcast from their home base to the south. A severe storm had formed overnight and it was projected to keep all aircraft grounded for a period of 7 to 10 days, so the group would have no way to leave the island until the storm passed. Also, and even more frightening - three of the eggplant stems from the pub where they'd eaten had been found to have a strange genetic anomaly that would cause lycanthropy in the person who ate it. There was no way of knowing which of the 3 crew members had been infected. What follows is a recreation of events compiled by the RCMP Nunavut Division based on recovered journals and video evidence, as well as testimony provided by the survivors of the ill-fated expedition. Welcome to the inaugural edition of Werewolves in Canada. The goal is simple. The villagers must identify the infected werewolves and eliminate them. The wolves must evade detection and kill off enough of the villagers to ensure their own victory. The rules: The game will be divided into Day and Night phases. Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours. During the Day, players may discuss who they think is infected and vote on who they should lynch. Killing a player via a lynch will reveal their role. If you wish, you may elect not to lynch a player during the day. There is no penalty for a No Lynch vote. In the event of a tie during the daytime voting, nobody will die. During the Night phase, all power roles (Seer, Defenders, Wolves) will send me a pm and tell me what they would like to do. The villagers (including Seer and Defenders) will win if they eliminate all of the wolves. The wolves will win if at any point the number of living wolves is equal to or greater than the number of living villagers. Power roles: Seer - Can scan 1 player each night phase and learn that person's role in the game. Whether or not the seer wants to contact the person they've scanned after learning their role is up to the seer. Defenders - During the night phase each of the 2 defenders will pm me the name of a person they want to defend that night. If the wolves attempt to attack a defended person then nothing will happen and nobody will die that night. Defenders may not defend the same person more than 1 night in a row. They may defend themselves. The Defenders do not know the identity of each other at the beginning of the game. Werewolves - The 3 wolves know who each other are. During the night phase they discuss who they'd like to kill and one of them will send me a pm. As long as that person wasn't defended, they'll die. Villagers - have no special powers to use at night, but do participate during Day phase discussions and voting. The Players (in order of signing up) Almonaster Disposablepuppetland The Land Wopruthien Barry Ater Nox Shy Guy Aux You may go ahead and post in the thread if you like, but voting won't officially begin until 1330 Eastern time on Sunday (just under 15 hours from now). I think I've covered all the bases. Good luck to all of you and I hope you enjoy my first attempt at hosting one of these. Please remember to bold all votes and all vote changes to make it easy for me to keep track of how many votes each person has against them. |

Nice write-up, Aerso, thanks. Although we don't know who's infected, I think our only chance is to start disinfecting straight away. We need to decide who to lynch. |

Well done on the story, Aerso. This should be a hoot. Before we formally get started, would each of you please step forward to see if I detect the scent of poor Ess' brains on your breath?

So, I'm thinking for the first night, we should probably vote not to lynch anyone? I mean we haven't the foggiest who is what. After the first victim maybe we'll have a better idea?

No Lynch is always a bad idea. If we do nothing, the werewolves will pick us off one by one. Think about it - we let this opportunity slide, someone else dies, what more do we know? |

Thinking about it, I can't really see any benefit either way. What's your reasoning behind a pre-emptive lynching Al? |

Simple: The only way to kill the wolves is by lynching. However smart we are, it's pretty much random unless the seer chooses to reveal themselves (and we believe them). The more shots we take, the better the chance of taking out the wolves. As I pointed out in my last post, if we just sit back, the wolves will win. Any chance is better than none. |

I didn't mean sitting back altogether, more going for a No Lynch on the first day because if we pick a villager, we're helping the wolves, aren't we? Forgive my ignorance if anything I've said is off...

Ok, I've heard from a majority of the players and the replies were unanimous to let Auq join. Several people though want to keep their roles which makes it difficult for me to maintain a balance. If I make him a wolf then the game is heavily skewed in their favor, but if I don't then nobody would vote to lynch him. I think I've found a way around the problem. I will assign Auq a role but not tell what it is. He could be a wolf whose incubation period hasn't run its course yet, and he could also be uninflected and a villager. I will PM him his role now |
