Hello, I'm Dr George, the Founder of Philosophy 115.

I founded P115 on 10 February 2005 as a discussion forum for my students in Philosophy 101 (Intro to Philosophy) and Philosophy 115 (Contemporary Moral Issues). Most students, however, signed up for the 1 point of extra credit and never came back, so we would have wild gyrations in membership, with large numbers of people joining at the beginning of the semester and especially right before the deadline, then massive dieoffs some 30 days later. Each semester, though, a student or two would stick around and we slowly built a viable region.

That changed in 2007 when I went onto disability for migraines and was no longer teaching, thus there were no longer students coming into the region. To keep the region alive, I formed a diplomatic corps and sought out friendly, compatible regions with which to trade ambassadors. That was our major source of growth until we adopted NS++ in 2014; since then, we have seen explosive growth, passing the 100 mark on 23 June 2014 and currently having 120 members.

The point of the region is to have Socratic style philosophical discussions. My vision is for it mostly to be at the 100 level so that most adults (and clever teens) can meaningfully participate. Occasionally, some of the philosophically more sophisticated ones want to go much deeper, but that restricts the discussion to just a few people. More typically, we help neophyte philosophers take that agonizing first step of surrendering assumptions about the world and unjustified opinions to a more modest epistemology. Many prefer just to lurk and try to learn by osmosis; that's fine, too. We all learn at our own speeds and with our own styles, eh?

Tea (and coffee) sometimes help, but sometimes they make them worse.

You may now call me Harry Truman, or just Harry. Same player, but now your ambassadorial nation!
