Oh... this looks good... but I can't read much of the text. :(

Could you upload it a little bigger, or as PNG?

[OOC]So... is anyone developing a heavy lift space vehicle?[/OOC]

Skybus conglomerate of Shinandaru in Almonaster Nuevo has developed a fully re-usable first-stage launch system based on maglev catapults and thermal rockets, capable of lifting payloads of up to 2,700 tonnes with a maximum velocity of 2,300 m/s at 78Km. Maximum acceleration is 3.1g, maximum payload diameter 9.7m

By supplying the majority of the energy in the initial boost from ground-based renewables, the cost to orbit of further stages is significantly reduced. The system could be further developed for larger payloads, if there was sufficient demand to justify the outlay.

[OOC]DPL you are right, I was tired when I posted the above. I didn't realize the text had gone so odd when I loaded it here.....it actually looks odd on the one on my computer now too.
I will try and get it fixed somehow[/OOC]

Much better.

I should point out that the launch system is only a first stage - other countries or businesses could get involved in the later stages of the launch, in equipment manufacture or elevator construction.

There would also need be work involved in setting up and running the international freeport at the base, and agreements on the organisation of the space end.

The government and industry of DPL are willing to investigate multiple potential sites for the construction of the elevator. We do have one question though: - Where is La Lune?

La Lune is a lump of rock orbiting the 'world' of Nation States.
Devimanians call it La Lune because being Canadian, we like to use our French linguistic signifiers from time to time.
Others might know it as the Moon.

The distance of La Lune from the Nation States world is dependent on its current orbital position. This distance varies from approximately 355,000 km at the perigee to 405,000 km at the apogee of its orbit.

It has 27% the diameter and 60% the density of the Nation States world. In short, the La Lune mass can be expressed at 1⁄81 of that of the Nation States world.

[OOC]I hope NS players more in the know aren't going to have to correct the above and explain the NS world is actually flat, or each region is in fact a planet in the NS galaxy! Or any other such complications or oversights I might have had.....NS world or scientifically. But please, correct away. I like to learn:) [/OOC]

Lorelai County is more than happy to be part of this space program. We will provide and bear all costs of the elevator music production.

[OOC]I guess most of you alrady know. Yes there is research going into this direction. You could have been actually a part of it via kickstarter. [/OOC]

Several Alterran universities have expressed interest in potential internship and exchange programs to the space elevator. This project serves as an excellent opportunity for aspiring engineers and scientists around Canada to practice their skills - a Canadian alternative to CERN in Europe.

As we're coming in to summer here in the southern half of Canada, the Stormaen Space Agency has announced a Royal Stormaen Air Force research facility will become available to launch equipment and supplies into space (if other facilities aren't available). It can operate larger, cargo launches but specialises in smaller payload launches. There is currently a selection process ongoing for Stormaener astronauts.

We probably need to form an international consortium to progress this.

I believe at least the following areas should be addressed...

Project planning
Design of Elevator
- Materials
- Power
- Construction issues
- Hazards and risk reduction
- Operational factors
- Design of vehicles
- Design of terminals
Selection of counterweight asteroid
Choice of construction site (see below)
Development of heavy lift capacity
Retrieval of asteroid(s)
Construction of build capability
- Crew selection
- Crew quarters
- Safety
- Machinery
- Power
Registration and orbital adjustment of other ongoing space missions.
Removal of major space junk
Build of base terminal and freeport
Security
Disaster planning

Some part of the construction phase will inevitably be orbital, but there is a case to be considered for setting up a lunar colony with either a catapult or its own elevator to allow major construction under gravity and with direct access to raw materials. If this option is to be followed, then the decision should be taken as early as possible.

There may also be benefits in locating some operations away from the proposed synchronous point for the elevator head, such as the lunar L1, L4 or L5 points. These would be particularly beneficial for operations which were likely to produce debris which might prove problematical once the elevator was operational.

Finally, it is worth noting that construction facilities and/or habitats at the elevator head, lunar surface or Lagrange points may have value beyond the scope of this project. Nations with an interest in this might want to consider making additional contributions to enable longer-term designs to be used.

Devil Heart supports this proposal for an International Consortium

The government of Devil Heart unfortunately at this time is 'caught up' in industrial and creative pursuits requiring it's immediate attention, but would like to engage with (and be a part of) this consortium nonetheless.

Devil Heart still has a particular interest in the discussions for a lunar colony. The nation has funds to sponsor the set up of a catapult or elevator, as well as some sort of inhabitable colony. It lacks technical 'know how', so looks to other Canadian nations willing to provide support and advice in this area.

Devil Heart is also interested in examining possibilities for the removal of space junk.

Alterrum supports the establishment of an international consortium and would also like to join this consortium.

We could easily handle the registration and adjustment of other missions, as well as communications in general, as we have decent satellite infrastructure in northern Alterrum as well as two relay satellites in space.

The Alterrum Space Center has also started a search for asteroids to serve as counterweight, but would like clarification from the consortium as to whether it has reached a decision to construct an orbital station at the end of the elevator. Due to our limited expertise in this area, we are looking for advice from other nations about the costs and technical feasibility of such a station.

Alterrum supports Devil Heart's interest in a lunar colony, something which has also been of interest to Alterrans in recent years.

An orbital station of some sort would be required to disembark passengers and pressurised cargo. I expect it would be better to build this into an asteroid than to launch the required mass from the surface. It would also provide significant extra protection for the station.

DPL fully supports the proposal for a lunar elevator/launch system, but we remain committed to building a Canada-orbit elevator. We have no particular preference for the order in which these are constructed. Certainly, either system would significantly aid the construction of the other, so one of the first goals of the planning stage would be establishing which is better to build first.

Oh hell yes, Stormaen will throw its (tiny) weight behind a lunar colony! :D

I propose we call it Project Small Step (in irony) or Project Giant Leap, both in honour of Armstrong's words! But also, it echoes humanity's need to explore and expand.

Alas! That's decades away! But it raises a question I believe Mattie brought up earlier: is it more economically feasible to capture an asteroid and stabilise its orbit, then commit and connect materials and manpower to it, or go for broke (so to speak) and head for the Moon? Granted, the safety/evacuation requirements and the time involved is all greater but the whole project might be more stable and actually, marginally less costly.

Chief Minister Dean Emerson has suggested a company in Stormaen be used for solar panels. In Stormaen, all new build houses require solar panels so the company can meet time and quality deadlines. Also, the company in question, Luminos, has offered to work with companies from other countries involved in the project.

The moon is not proposed an alternative to asteroid capture. An asteroid is needed as a source of ballast in almost all designs.

The moon is a potential construction site for some or all of the components of the elevator structure. The alternative is to perform the construction in situ at the point of the elevator head.

The main advantage of lunar construction is the use of lunar rocks as source materials. The main disadvantage is the the cost of shipping them back to the elevator head point. There are secondary considerations in the relative familiarity of the working environment with gravity (albeit low) and a solid surface to work from.
