Excellent question! If we had the same enthusiasm for space that we did in the 60's we'd have probably be sending men to Mars next decade.

Instead, I heard that 2080 is the "likely date" for man to set off for Mars. So most of use will be dead by then...lovely to think no major manned missions into space will likely occur in our lifetime at the current rate.

I have a solution, but I doubt Iran and North Korea will want to curb their nuclear and world domination ambitions to compete against the world in a much more noble cause....It only takes a "In your face" nation to find a more constructive way to tell the rest of the world to suck it!

You don't have to be from the US to take pride in the moon landing, this was just not a great feat for US but for the world

Many of the engineers who made the moon landing possible were Canadians. When the Avro Aero project was scrapped, many of the Aero's engineers were hired by NASA and put to work on the Apollo project. In one documentary that I viewed a few years ago, it was speculated that if the Avro Aero project had not been cancelled, the Moon landing would have succeeded so quickly, as NASA would not have had the required personnel for such an accellerated schedule.

From what I read, 400,000 people were involved in the American race to the moon.

We need another space race to revitalize the economy!

It's rather strange that because the USA is the only nation to have been to another world, we automatically assume the USA will lead the way to Mars (well I certainly assume that!).

However, China or Japan could get there before the USA ever does, simply because in those nations there's more of a will for it. The US government seems content to rest on the laurels of having been to the moon, but places like China and India with their emerging lust for space may well take "one small step" on another planet before the USA does.

They probably do. It is hard to translate humor, and unless you know about the Onion, I could see misunderstanding the content.

But for a newspaper not to check other sources for this story's validity, is just silly. Unless, of course, it's another Onion hoax on itself, which it hasn't done in a long time.
