Today marks 40 years since man first stood on another world, quarter of a million miles away. In video: When man went to the moon. Will man ever go back to the moon? Or is it time to aim further away: is it time to reach for Mars? Either way, this was an epic feat and obviously it will live throughout all the ages of mankind as the first time we left our world for another. [size0]Note: anybody wanting to moan about conspiracies, please do it elsewhere... And now, a fitting poem: (which clearly I stole from somewhere else)Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark nor even eagle flew— And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. |

The new moon missions will lead up to a moon station or something similar. They are mapping it more comprehensively and scoping out water and other resources to use for such a project. Amazing to think of. |

Well, actually we do know. This podcast has an interview with a great Moon Landing Hoax Conspiracy debunker. And THIS Web site is an excellent resource, even for those who know we went to the moon, but still might have questions about the anomalies and other interesting bits about the landing. |

To all the doubters - here be the proof. Nasa's latest mission to survey the moon has photographed one of the lunar landing sites. Link that proves small minded, and probably socially inept, conspiracy theorists wrong...
You could say, those people who don't believe man has been to the moon are lunatics

So, the conspiracy folks think we have unlimited budgets for all the ways in which they have to fake and cover-up, bribe and distort facts. It would be cheaper and faster just to go to the moon several times. |

It is indeed an amazing achievement, but there has been just far too much coverage of it here. A follow-on question - why have we done so little (comparatively) since? |

You don't have to be from the US to take pride in the moon landing, this was just not a great feat for US but for the world |

Yeah it was pretty cool. I think they're aiming for Mars next. Hey, when are we gonna start colonizing space? And I don't mean temp stays on a space station...I'm talking settlers here! |

^ Excellent question! If we had the same enthusiasm for space that we did in the 60's we'd have probably be sending men to Mars next decade. Instead, I heard that 2080 is the "likely date" for man to set off for Mars. So most of use will be dead by then...lovely to think no major manned missions into space will likely occur in our lifetime at the current rate. <_<
So? I'm South African and I take pride in those men who walked on the surface of another world. They didn't do it for America, they did it for all the world. It showed what man truly was capable of and where our future could lie. Some events are universally inspiring: the lunar landing is certainly one of them. |
