It sounds like something from Shakespeare's classic, but alas:
India's Romeo and Juliet tragedy

I had two friends who were in a similar situation, one was Muslim, one was Jewish. However, they just went their separate ways, rather than going for the suicide option.

Religion didn't create that tragedy. It was families who put unbearable pressure on their children to do certain things.

I agree. I've read about this on other news sites and everyone but the BBC calls it a mix of culture and religion. The BBC seems to play only the religion card

However, this is in a land torn up by religious factions. There's many people I know who are of different faiths but their families didn't go all "Oh no no no" on them. My Jewish Anna friend is married to a Christian, both families were fine with it. So that's why I think it's culture and religion. The culture of "Marry who we say!" is damaging.

Well, there's always the warning about pairing two un-equal oxen. I'm torn on the whole idea of romantic love over every other consideration. Sometimes families have the good sense to protect their children from harmful relationships and unwise, life-long matches made in haste.

But then again... is it worth it to kill yourself over another? Or is this even about the other person in the ill-favored relationship? With a family like that, what other things must you give up in the name of the family's religious zeal?

I agree with the love thing jD. Is it worth killing yourself because you're denied a life with the one you love? I don't think it is, but then I'm 21 and pretty confident when I say, "I've never been in love" so I wouldn't know what I would do in that situation.

Why didn't they just run away together?

Either way, it's all very tragic.

If I ever figure out what "love" really is, maybe I'll try and answer that question.
