Giver of the *Hi-5*

Last night I watched Endgame on Channel 4. It was about the secret talks which ended apartheid and eventually led to South Africa's first fully democratic elections on 27 April 1994 (known as "Freedom Day" to most in SA). The film, to my pleasant surprise, was perfectly neutral throughout. All to often films are over-zealous in painting all whites with the "you evil racist bastards" brush. This film did extraordinarily well to maintain a neutral view throughout. Beginning with the extremes of each side and working, as in the two sides did in reality, to an uneasy, yet relieving, agreement; the history of public feeling towards apartheid over its history is well reflected in this film. A well thought out and brilliantly executed strategy. From the uneasy and tense beginning, you are immediately drawn into the film's representation of a once gritty reality. The film closes with a most poignant moment in South African history, one to which I openly admit I teared up to while watching. The writing and acting cannot be overrated, and I commend the very well-informed writer. As a side note, the South African accents were very accurate and unexaggerated. Kit gives Endgame 5/5 = Cooler than ice |
