Sorry, when it comes to rock bands, Pink Floyd trumps them all.

I hate top 5's because it very much depends on mood, but right now I'd say...

Peat Bog Faeries
Yes
Steely Dan
Pink Floyd
Weather Report

I tried listening to Weather Report, my uncle had good words about them, but I couldn't get into it. Any suggestions Al?

1: Foo Fighters

2: Motion City Soundtrack

3: Jonathan Coulton

4: Molly Lewis

5: Bowling For Soup

Also, if anyone wants to hear some good instrumental stuff, check out Jim "Kimo" West (he plays guitar for "Weird Al"), and also Jean Baudin (he plays an 11-string bass). Both are really talented and amazing to watch.

I will accept your praise now.

Sorry Omni, missed that at the time.

Their best known track is probably Birdland.

Try listening to "Elegant People" off the album "Black Market". It's not their best track, but it's as close as I can come to a "typical" track by them. The rest of the album (from near the middle of their career) gives a good idea of their versatility. If it passes you by, then it's unlikely you'll find much of theirs that you do like. Earlier stuff tends to be more jazzy and acoustic, later stuff is even more synthy and experimental. They're a bit of an acquired taste. (On the other hand, do come back in 5 years and try again!)

PS: There are two albums called just "Weather Report", the first ('71) and ninth ('82) of thirteen.

This is my short list:

Hands down my favorite artist
John Lennon

I have always loved his work but some how as I get older I value it even more:
George Harrison

My favorite genre is Power Pop; the first album from this band is power pop perfection:
The Beat

In my dictionary - the definition of musical talent (not to mention that bluegrass kicks butt):
Alison Krauss

This gentleman plays a style of music called Jump Blues but for me he represents the foundation of some of the best parts of Rock 'n' Roll:
Louis Jordan

I'm going to cheat a little and add a video of the only song my top two artists ever wrote together:
Cry For A Shadow

Creativity is intelligence having fun - Albert Einstein
