Coalition getting ready to go to work.

Looks like Canada is about to get it's first coalition government in 91 years. To me it's a mystery why the conservatives were even allowed to form government without trying to obtain their own coalition partner first. I mean they only had to reach out to one other party and instead Harper chose to attack all of them.
Go Mooseheads!

I'm not a fan of coalitions seizing power from a democratically elected government, even if it is a minority one.

I'll be watching this whole thing closely though.

Harper's going to address the country tonight at 7 pm eastern time. Paul Martin was the last prime minister to do this, right before he was defeated in the commons. Expect Harper to attack everyone that isn't him and to spew hypocrisy.
Go Mooseheads!

And so we all learn a new word... prorogation.

At this point, I am so fed up with Harper and the Conservatives, I would prefer Gilles Duceppe as Prime Minister! :wall:

Harper will probably get ousted when Parliament reconvenes. If the coalition had enough votes to oust Harper before Parliament was suspended, I'm sure they'll have enough when it returns.

I'm not an expert on parliamentary politics, but parties that make up the coalition were also elected to parliament. If they team together to act as one party and oust Harper, is there really anything wrong with that?

In Australia you vote for the Liberal/National coalition, so I don't see what you're complaining about. :P

1) In Australia I vote Liberal, unfortunately that comes with the Nats attatched, I'm seriously not a big fan of the Nationals truth be told. I honestly can't name one policy they stand for... They're basically a bunch of angry farmers who are pissed off at the idea of cities holding more power than unpopulated farmland.

Also the Liberals didn't rely on the Nats numbers in order to form their last government (they did anyway but they didn't need to). But this is a case of every little party balling up together.

2) So long as Libs have the current tw*t as their leader I won't be voting for them. I hate Malcolm Turnbull. The man makes me cringe. Like 95% of MPs he instinctively sly and a waste of time and space. My current local MP should've been party leader (she's currently Deputy party leader)...however "inexperienced" she is...

^ Valid enough point. Like I said, minority or not, they were elected to be the government, and I think many in Canada will feel cheated if the other parties banded together just for the sake of grabbing power.

Mind you, proroguing parliament is like a cowards way out methinks. I think Harper will have damaged himself more by doing that.

Anyway, I'll keep stum.

I suppose all this is a demonstration of how parliamentary systems are so much more flexible than other systems. :D So tis good for one thing...watch children...watch as we see the parliamentary system in action...

To be honest, while I absolutely hate the Conservatives, I have very little affection for the Liberals. To paraphrase the bard, "A pox on both their households!"

I am not comfortable with the Bloc Quebecois, a separatist party, holding the balance of power either. (For those of you who are counting, I guess you can figure out which party I DO support)

In my case, it is a matter of choosing the least of two evils. In this case, I say that we should dump Harper and his Conservatives.

Are you referring to Julie Bishop? :P

I can't stand her... she smiles like the Cheshire Cat during interviews and I reckon she's shifty. :ph43r:

But that's my opinion.

Many people do not like the two-party system of the US, but it does avoid problems that minority governments face.

That's true, but also we can change those minority governments. In the US, you have to put up with a government for 4 years no matter what.

She's shifty because of her smile.

That's the only reason I need. ;)

Well, truth be told...that's fair enough!

Ever since I saw Tony Blair's smile I thought, something wrong with that character...oh how I was proven right...

Hopefully you'll be wrong about Bishop...because if she's shifty...then...well I'll not vote for her

dion's resigning twoday. leadership contest time !

I heard that he was resigning a few months ago, it's just happening now?

It's almost as if he's been apologizing ever since he was elected as party leader. He's a great policy guy, and will make a great minister, but as the leader of the party I'm wholly partisan to, he won't be missed.

I have some misgivings about Ignatieff, but he's a legitimate leader and a great liberal. Obviously the next Prime Minister. The best choice in the absence of Frank McKenna and John Manley.

Frankly, Harper deserves what's coming to him, for coming out of the blue with radical policies he had no mandate for.
"I said «merde» and the Queen laughed" - Jean Chrétien reacting to a faulty pen given to him by Pierre Trudeau on the signing of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, in April 1982.
