British people here on NSC may well have already heard of this, but I thought I'd let the wider world know. Damian Green, a British Member of Parliament was, on Thursday last week, arrested by anti-terror police. He is accused of "leaking state secrets" relating to immigration. This is utter bullshit being fed to us by a government we know likes to nip civil liberties in the bud. Read the story at the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7753557.stm This has me fuming. It's yet more evidence of our ever-growing police state. It's not just Tory (Conservative) MPs who are angry over this, members of the government's own back benches are spitting over it. An opposition MP being arrested and held for 9 hours, as well as having his home and parliamentary offices turned over, for simply doing his job and disclosing embarrasing truths about immigration is the kind of actions Stalin or Robert Mugabe would take!! This is almost as bad as Watergate. Opposition MPs being spied on. It is all too clear that for the anti-terror Police to be involved, they must have been watching Mr Green for sometime. He was releasing figures, which should've been readily available anyway, in the public interest and because it's humiliating and embarrasing for the government, he's conveniently arrested. I dare to think if this Labour government thought it could get away with it, they'd have him shot or something. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not fuming just because he's a Conservative MP. I'd be just as angry if it was an MP of ANY party. However, the fact this has occured under a Labour government that has already made us the most watched country in the world and has plans to take that further, comes as no surprise. Damian Green was protected by his parliamentary privilege to defend and speak out in the name of public interest. That privilege, nay right, has been violated. Not since the days of Charles I of England has such dictatorship held a grip on this country. |

I am getting the feeling that civil liberties are being flushed down the toilet so we can "FIGHT TEH TERROR!!!!1111oneoneone" and the fact is, terrorism has been with countries all over the world well before 9/11 happened, but it's only since then that governments are paying attention to it.

*Hi-5* You hit it on the nail. Here's one irony: the London bombings only happened because Britain went to war on "teh terror" I honestly think that this government is a bunch of f**king tools. They couldn't run a chook raffle, FFS. Frankly, I agree with the opposition leader here in the UK - I want an immediate election. This country has DOUBLED its national debt in the last 12 months. The government has went from "fiscal prudence" to utter recklessness. It is a joke! But anyway, my p*ss is already boiled enough over this government and it's totalitarianism, so I'll calm it down... |

Why werent you Brits on the streets protesting about that? Sounds similar to Watergate almost. If i was British I'd have protested the government into election. I read that and was almost offended on your behalf. Also I think terrorism is a great excuse for any government to use. I voted Obama because I hope his administration doesn't use it as a tool to control us all. |

Because we're British and reserved ![]() Plus they won't listen to us, Brown has the power to call the next election when it suits him (Cameron tried to call him out when he took over from Blair, but Brown didn't want an election as he would lose). |

In October 2007, Brown bottled the election because the Conservatives had an 11 point lead over him...nuff said. I hear people saying there's going to be an election in Spring/Summer 2009, but I don't think he will. I reckon he'll wait till the economy naturally recovers and claim victory for "saving the world"...again...despite landing Britain with a debt that will be over our heads for generations to come. When the next election does role round, I'll make sure I'm back in the UK for it and I'll make sure I'm voting Tory.
*Hi-5* My uni lecturer wanted to send a "strong letter of protest"...laughable...I wanted to send a f**king letter bomb... <_< Britain is breeding totalitarianism! Labour are a f**king horrible government. P.S. I use the word "government" VERY loosely in regards to sh*tty Labour! |

Western Democracy = Oligarchy. NS Canada Democracy = Almost perfect (why has jD not been voted in as Chief Priestess of Cool? )I'm not sure who to vote for, I'll wait to see how much of an affect the tax cut has on my weekly shopping. Not much. (*Cut VAT? Why not just cut and make internal spendings more efficient? Like removing troops slowly from Iraq?*) |

Well, you're talking about a man who said, "No more troops to Iraq or Afghanistan" then a week later after Obama asked for more troops, Brown paid the bill. He's the second sh*ttest post war PM ever, Eden taking first place. |
