Firstly, I don't care about liberals or conservatives. This is a democracy and everyone regardless of political belief is allowed freedom of speech. Secondly, I voted Obama, even though I'd consider myself a conservative. (but then I live in a forward thinking state...) Thirdly, I don't think any of those about liberals I just think, "liberal views are as valid as mine, they just wanna do things differently" Lastly, American liberals aren't as bad as other liberals, like the liberals of Europe. Nuff said... |

It seems to me political classification is like classifying the taste of good food. Everyone has its own understanding of it. Bon Appétit! |

 @lc I quit using political terms because it made no difference to me about Republican or Democrat, and in so many ways, there is still no difference. However, I now explain to those who ask that I am a Liberal, and then I bother to define how. It's not any government's right to monitor my personal life, attempt to censor it, or define who I may or may not associate with - period. It is the government's job to do those things, on the people's behalf, to organizations and businesses who can leverage more influence and create wider-ranging effects on our families and environment than individuals. In that sense, neither major party can claim to be Liberal at all. In the last 20 years, holding businesses accountable for the power they have has been priced out of everybody's range, including the government. And no one has the funds to hold the government accountable for doing their jobs. Nobody. In a Capitalist system, there is no right or left, liberal or conservative, there is only greed. |

What a strange article. It seems kind of weird to classify people as liberals. It doesn't happen over here in the UK at all really, except when they're talking to Americans on the news. The US media seems to assume liberal equals socialist, but that is not necessarily true, and likewise, a capitalist is not necessarily a conservative. Here the media talks about left-wing (socialist) and right-wing (capitalist) and occasionally describes individuals on either side as more or less liberal, but never classifies people as 'liberals'. |

I use the system that political compass uses: the two axis approach. That way you can see where people stand on the economic "right-left" scale as well as where they stand on the "authoritarian-libertarian" scale. It means that you can't (and rightly shouldn't) sum up everyone as conservative or liberal or capitalist or socialist. There was one thing jD said, which I 100% agree with:
^ THAT is why I hate the current British government so much. The UK has more security cameras than China and dedicates more of its budget to spying on its own citizens than any other nation in the western world. All of this "only wrong doers need be worried" is complete fucking bullshit!! (Apologies for not censoring my language but that's how passionate I feel against this government's actions.) |

Totally agree with that. A good example is the ongoing scandal regarding data privacy at Telekom in Germany. |

My favorite myth is that (American-type) Liberals are woosies. That we'll just take any amount of crap before taking any action. Not true. In fact, earlier today I witnessed acts of stupidity and "terrorism" stopped within 10 minutes... by Liberals. Hm. My heroes.

I may have been young but I still very much remember what apartheid South Africa was like. I remember how observed everyone was. Going to the next town you'd be required to take your travel passes and your ID cards and if you were black, forget travelling... I would rather live in a world where a do nothing Liberal government defended my right to privacy and equality before the law than live in a world where a totalitarian government knew my every move and called it "national security". Ironically the "liberals" of the UK are the kind who would shout down the government for spying on civilians and yet would also hand your sovereignty over to the European Union. That's why I support the Conservatives in the UK. Their current leader, David Cameron is a centrist in charge of a right-wing party. They're majoritively anti-EU and anti-ID card. Currently the Bush administration in the US and the Labour government of Britain have done more to curtail civil freedoms and privacy laws than any other governments in the English speaking world. "Those who would sacrifice civil liberties for national security deserve neither." |
