Harper won the election, but alas, he did not win the majority government. |

In the US election thread I made a comment: "Election '08 - American flips a coin", well in this case, the coin was flipped...and landed on it's edge... Isn't this something like the third election in 4 years?

well, we won't be seeing a green candidate till we get proportional voting...and there won't be a majority till they can trim back the BQ seats to like, 30ish? If 50 seats go to BQ, a party needs to take 60% of all the other seats in the country. |

I think if we were required to vote, third parties would have more support than they currently do. Of course, it's no guarantee, but I'm coming around to appreciate mandatory suffrage. |

Unfortunately proportional voting will lead to far more minority governments. Yes, you'll get your green candidate and most likely a couple others, but look at New Zealand. Proportional voting was adopted there in 1996. Since that time, lame and dying government's have been able to hang on to power simply because they made the right deals. Iceland is even worse in that aspect. With proportional representation, landslide election victories are a rarity if at all existant. As a quick example in the UK, the landslides of 1979 and 1997 would never have happened. It would've taken at least 10 years of minority government to kick the Conservatives out of office by which time their popularity would have come full circle and they'd be out again. It would be the same for Canada, your major parties would never win majority. Since proportional representation, New Zealand has never seen a majority government. |

The two useful outcomes of an otherwise apparently pointless election: 1. Harper will never be trusted with a majority nor will he have again such a golden opportunity for one in the future. 2. The Liberals will get a chance to get their act together. It seems that Dion will be making some sort of announcement on Monday. Probably resigning as Liberal Party leader and setting up another race. From the names I've heard so far, I'd like to see John Manley go for it. |
