Is this ridiculous or what?

Passenger 1 Adult

Price £ 168.00

Taxes, fees, charges and surcharges* per person £ 297.90

Inclusive total £ 465.90

The BA site will not even give a breakdown of what these surcharges are.

truly ridiculous. where was the flight to/from?

i'm also worried about air fares, as the company i flew to europe with (for quite a reasonable price, considering i crossed one continent and one large ocean), has since gone under. Zoom Airlines.

so ... i dunno really what to do.

Edinburgh-Montreal return on BA. The total price is about as good as it gets, it's the (lack of) breakdown that irritates me. Listing about 1/3 of the actual cost as the "price" makes it very difficult to compare, especially when each airline does it a different way.

On getting back, Niz, have you considered working your way by sea?

Commercial Shipping

Various nations do still allow their shipping lines to take on unqualified, casual workers. These include ships flying the flags of Panama, Liberia, Liechtenstein and several Far East countries. This may not be ideal for transport from Britain but it could be utilised once you are in other parts of the world. Cargo vessels go regularly between the Americas and the Antipodes and employment is available occasionally. A direct approach is best: find the captain of a commercial ship (medium sized cargo ships are best) and ask him if he requires any working passengers.

Freighter

One way of travelling by ship is to pay for a cabin on a freighter. Despite the fact that this is an expensive way to travel it is proving increasingly popular, particularly with the over 60s, and some companies have long waiting lists. For the independent traveller with limited means it may not be the most practical mode of transport.

One of the major container ports might be a good place to try - Rotterdam is probably the busiest.

when i was still thinking of starting my journey in japan, i was looking at freighters, but i couldn't find a company that had anything less than 2 weeks in the crossing and it all was at least as much as a plane ticket.

i hadn't considered it for the return journey... and i've been told by a friend that air transat isn't TOO expensive.

it's still a long way off; we'll see what time brings.
