Nothing in stone yet, and it's not the first time Detroit's automakers have explored mergers.

Although I feel someone needs to do something benificial quick since Michigan is tripping and will soon land flat on it's face. I'm pretty sure merging is not the answer.

GM and Ford shares were battered with the rest of the stock market this week, falling to lows not seen in decades. GM shares lost about half of their already-depressed value during the week, closing at $4.89 on Friday. Ford shares fell similarly, ending the week at $1.99.

Already crippled.

i think the usa is only a superpower when need be like if in a truly loseable war, or at least one with pretty good provocation, but once we want to go back to isolationism, thats when we need to let our economy go down to normalness again, we can't keep up this superpower business, its just not our type of country, a course alot others disagree with me :P

*edit*:

i think that our economy is falling slightly, but not plummeting to horrors beyond the beyond, just slipping. like trying to rollerblade on a bunch of grease, pretty hard to stay up  lol.

We have something called EuroMillions in this country (as well as a few other countries). It's largest jackpot to date was £185 million (at the time approximately US$370 million).

voluntary taxation - survey says! jD won't go there.

some parts of the country are already failing miserably, and people are dying because of it. cynical me says that if it weren't for all our trinkets and tvs, we probably would've noticed more.

i think the answer lies in keeping money, services and goods as local as possible - buy at local shops even if it's walmart, farmers markets; invest in libraries and community centers, youth centers and recreation programs; get involved in the schools and support teachers. cuts down on transportation and gives the people around you more than your business. i love the internet, but it takes a toll on real relations.

going local also keeps the local economy diversified. so many communities have learned the hard way that as the one industry/company goes, so goes the town.

I think a 500 mile diet is doable for a lot of folks. We can easily do 100 miles because we have a huge variety of ag in this area - beef, wool, poultry, pork, wine, wind and solar power, corn, fruits, veggies of all sorts (even okra!), fisheries and dairy.

Must seem ridiculous for island folk, but 500 miles tain't far at all. :)

In Europe they say 500 years is not very old, but 500 miles is very far. In the Americas, 500 miles is not very far, but 500 years is very old.

There has got to be some bamboo in that area, bp. Tell papa to start some in random public places! ;)

There are 91 genera and about 1,000 species of bamboo. They are found in diverse climates, from cold mountains to hot tropical regions. They occur across East Asia, from 50°N latitude in Sakhalin through to northern Australia, and west to India and the Himalaya.[2] They also occur in sub-Saharan Africa, and in the Americas from the southeast of the United States[3] south to Argentina and Chile, there reaching their furthest south anywhere, at 47°S latitude. Major areas with no native bamboos include Europe, north Africa, western Asia, Canada, most of Australia, and Antarctica.[4]

Bamboo bamboo!

I think florida is farther than 500 miles....

funny story:

one of the people i'm teaching english to here works for an insurance company, and a large part of his work involves observing the stock market and preparing some sort of "packages", the details of which i really don't know.

so i find myself amused by his distress over the looming economic collapse.

subject change
i don't know if i'm being unfeeling by saying this, but...
... i kind of feel like a good ole' depression would do humanity in general some good. at any rate, it'll help the environment a whole lot.
no money = not so much driving, plundering of the earth.

wow... wasn't expecting that kind of reception. thought it sounded a bit isolationist for most folks.

on the national level, we had better not overreact with isolationist crap, i think. there is no place to run and hide with the intertwined economies. but hell, the average person has to have something to do to keep from feeling helpless and hopeless.

i expect you'll be voting for me? ;)
