Could the world end on Wednesday?

Anybody heard about this? On Wednesday 10 September, a particle accelerator designed to create tiny black holes will be swtiched on. A machine...that creates...black holes... :eyebrow:

I always knew scientists and not terrorists would destroy the world...

The BBC doesn't seem to worry over the issue:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsi...000/7599588.stm

You can read here for more info.

Frankly, I am slightly worried over this. Black holes are the ultimate destructive force in the universe and now some geeks want to create them under ground in Switzerland...WTF?!?!

I know there's a "small chance", but what exactly are they basing it on? The last time a black hole formed on Earth?!

So what do you all think about this "harmless" research? Are we scaredy-cats right to be cautious, or is the almighty and omnipotent BBC right, in telling us to "cram it" and go back to watching Eastenders?

People were scared of steam engines, electricity, aeroplanes, mobile phones, genetically engineered food, etc... All this things are commonplace now and perfectly safe. In ten years time every household will have a black hole in their kitchen and we'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

GM foods aren't as widespread in the UK and Australia as they are in North America. THere's a lot of opposition to it, especially in the UK and I get that vibe from Western Australia too. People in Australia demanded that labelling be used so they know what's GM and what's not and as far as I'm aware (I may be wrong), the GM option is generally turned down by Australians.

In regards to those other things, aeroplanes and steam engines and the rest don't have the potential to destroy the world. The scientists running the show state that the black holes will simply evaporate, yet they're basing this on a theory, one that has never been tested. The theory comes from Stephen Hawking, however, even he has questioned his own theories in the past. Just a couple years ago he completely denounced one of his own theories on black holes; a theory that spawned the current theory that mirco black holes will simply "evaporate".

Come to think of it... one of the places I used to live in already had a black hole that consumed everything it came into contact with. He wasn't very dangerous though, except when he got drunk.

i think that either way, human curiosity will always go everywhere, really. I personally think it's a wonderful idea, because if we do make black holes, that dissipate quickly, and a big asteroid comes on, then we could send one up there and destroy it with no bad things happenin, then we might find a way to use what we learned to go further into space, and if it is catastrophic, then it'd be one hellofa way to die, wouldn't it? It's ironic, im religious, but very scientific

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole#Micro_black_holes

The formation of black hole analogs on Earth in particle accelerators has been reported. These black hole analogs are not the same as gravitational black holes, but they are vital testing grounds for quantum theories of gravity.

They act like black holes because of the correspondence between the theory of the strong nuclear force, which has nothing to do with gravity, and the quantum theory of gravity. They are similar because both are described by string theory. So the formation and disintegration of a fireball in quark gluon plasma can be interpreted in black hole language. The fireball at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider [RHIC] is a phenomenon which is closely analogous to a black hole, and many of its physical properties can be correctly predicted using this analogy. The fireball, however, is not a gravitational object. It is presently unknown whether the much more energetic Large Hadron Collider [LHC] would be capable of producing the speculative large extra dimension micro black hole, as many theorists have suggested.

I'm not afraid... let doomsday come. Beside the earliest experiments will be 2 months after 08.09. So plenty of time to enjoy life before it ends. :drunk:

I was thinking of getting Spore, but I'll wait til I'm back in the UK because customs are funny when they scan your stuff and find round metal things in there :eyebrow:

I don't personally remember a time when people thought the Earth was flat :shifty:  but I know what you mean.

i think canada is has a good chance of scienfic exellence in the future due to it's being loaded with oil to sell, i think canada is the perfect place for investors and scientists who want to work, the USA is kind of expensive, i think germany might be the best place though due to the current situation.
