About the evacuation

The levees in the area have not been rebuilt to speak of. They are still burying the dead and cleaning up from Katrina.

An awful week ahead for the U.S., and a terrible week for Haiti and Cuba continues.

But that was three years ago!

They're still cleaning up?

As weird as this sounds, in the Katrina aftermath I was worried, because I was seeing the images on TV and thinking "this is the most powerful country on the earth, and yet when something hits them in their own backyard, they can't do anything about it".

Hopefully Bush has learned from Katrina, and will make sure that this evacuation goes smoothly?

I don't really think this is a time to be stabbing and scratching at each other. I think it's a time that politics needs to shut the f**k up and when people need to pray for the best and prepare for the worst. I know the Reps putting their convention on hold might be seen as a political move *cough*Democrats*cough, cough* but think if the roles were reversed and it was the Democratic convention was going on, I bet they'd scale that one down too.

That's one thing you can say about the UK and Australia - when disaster strikes, the politics stop and the working together begins. When everyone is taken care of, that's when you starting deriding the c**ts in power for doing nothing! :P

Nah, but seriously, Gustav has me worried for the people of New Orleans. I hear it will hit just west of the city, but from the pictures the BBC were showing it looks like most of the levees may just hold. The storm surges were about 1ft below the levees when BBC World Service reported on it.

When I was watching Sky News the waves were almost level with the levees.

They're still cleaning up?

Papa was listening to this this morning.

CBC - The Current for Labour Day, 2008

Quote:

Three years later, tourism has come back to New Orleans. In the famous French Quarter, reminders of Hurricane Katrina come in the form of guided tours and souvenirs. And to the revelers on Bourbon Street, the city is rebuilt.

But drive just a few kilometres over the St.Claude bridge and the devastation is still plainly visible. Jessica Grillanda spent five weeks in New Orleans this summer in the city's Lower 9th Ward. On today's show, Jessica Grillanda took us on a tour of that neighbourhood to meet some of the people who have managed to make their way home.

So technically yes, the side that brings in money is done... more ...um. "good news" about FEMA..."good" story about the application for funding for rebuilding sidewalk and road (note the lack of an 's' there).

(about 20 minutes)

Uh, I don't think they've left dead people lying around in New Orleans for 3 years.

Gustav could have been much, much worse. It was only a Category 2 at landfall. The National Hurricane Center was predicting it to be a Cat 3-4 at landfall just a couple days ago.

Actually, I was not making a joke, but that was pretty funny. What I really meant to say was that they put aside all kinds of things to show a response.

It just seems like a silly thing to do.

Like when heads of state vist disaster areas... the hullabaloo surrounding their visit (security, TV cameras and so forth) actually hinders the relief effort.

But of course they need to look like they're doing something (even if it is totally random) because it's all image. <_<

The Granville Train Disaster rescure went pretty smoothly... it was all over before the pollies could get off their arses and get to the train wreck. :fonz:

I agree with you on the press and media attention hindering relief operations Pez  They just get in the way when they should be getting elbow deep in the rubble and actually helping out, instead of standing going "Oh it's dreadful...*tap local on shoulder*...right, well I'm off...cheerio!"

During the 7/7 bombings, politics in the UK just ended. Took about three months for someone in the public eye to start criticising government response. On another note, the emergency services people were fantastic on that day!

I found it funny how on World News Tonight, they were interviewing some guy from Leeds in the Yorkshire, northern England and they had to put subtitles up

How can Haiti survive all the hurricanes? I just don't know how that country is still in existence... ravaged so many times by fighting and weather... :(

Yesterday BBC World Service showed residents in Florida buckling down for Hurricane Ike. The reporter was stood in front of a sign a resident had pinned up on their front door for the hurricane to "read", the sign simply said, "Ike...go batter Tina!"

I was pretty much:     for five minutes after...
