apparently they also create a lot/some noise. My uncle has a cabin by a wind farm...he doesn't like it.

Yup, they do produce a lot of noise.

But don't mess with the wind flow.

The USA can afford nuclear power and hydrogen, but i think that they should help put forth a program of education for the public to use their own (miniature) solar panels to power their house, but you must remember, EVERYONE, people work at oil, and gas power plants, and people work for the electrical companies, we need to keep them working too, so we dont lay off people.

Totally agree. Having our own solar panels cuts back on our bills, but of course the electricity infrastructure will still be in use, so everyone keeps their job.

The local solar panels won’t just pop up from nowhere. Resources have to be gathered, refined and the panels build, installed and maybe even some maintenance is necessary. This will generated also jobs. Beside like Pez said, it won’t totally replace the other energy infrastructure.

Again to the hydrogen: This is only a medium and not really an energy source. It is a good solution against CO2 Emissions, but it can’t be seen as a solution as new energy source to cover the increasing demand.

That’s right. I once stand directly under one of them. It was almost impossible to talk to each other. An interesting solution in Germany is to put up the Windfarm in the Nord Sea.

About the wind farms - in the UK, I only approve of them when they're out at sea. Thanks to Spanish sailors the North Sea is now emptying faster than ever (f**king b*****ds) so there's no possibility of destroying any eco-systems :eyebrow:

However, I HUGELY disapprove of wind farms being built over pristine countryside, that p*sses me off truth be told. I hate it when you look out across the bush and see nothing but bloody wind turnbines. Also when they're out at sea nobody's gonna be too bothered by the sound :P

i wonder if we could use co2 to power cars..... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (goes to BMW to submit idea) Would wind turbines at sea kind of hurt the environment though? If they are so noisy, then perhaps sharks keen on vibrations would be blind due to the high niose and subsequent vibrations?

Not too many sharks in the North Sea :P They're more efficient at sea, wind turbines are something like 30% more effective at sea than on land :)

I like the idea of water-powered cars :P

We've already had a thread about water-powered cars

Wind turbines are located in areas of outstanding natural beauty in the UK as those areas (Snowdonia, Peak District, Lake District, Scotland :P ) force the air upwards from the coasts creating more wind.

The turbine farm in the Irish Sea, just off of the coast of North Wales, actually looks nice. It's kind of mesmerising.

i think nuclear power would be great for more rural areas of america where it would supply jobs, while in more urban areas, there could be jobs for people to install solar panels onto houses, it'd be wonderful if we did the smart things to become independant. We need more american companies stayin in the states though in order to truly be independant once more.

If you refer to the dependency to oil I totally agree with you. I think Iceland is going here an interesting way. With their thermal energy plants they have cheap way to produce electricity and hydrogen. Their goal is to be the first country independent from fossil fuels. So heating, public transport… even their whole fishing fleet (something around 2500 boats and the major economical income for this country) should be going on hydrogen until 2020.

I’m really exited if they going to manage this. I hope so. Being independent from the oil means also being more economical and political independent from those companies and the geopolitical issues of the regions with oil resources.

I have many friends in Iceland and I've been there loads. I saw my mate's energy bills... Her monthly bill was less than 10% what I pay here in the UK each month. They may have higher taxes and ridiculously strict laws on tabacco and alcohol, but then Iceland is second only to Japan in terms of longevity.

As for the way they get their energy. In order to reach that target you mentioned LC, the government have ordered dams to be built in areas of natural beauty and abundant wild life.

My home here in Perth has solar panels. Their only problem is that they're really expensive. To get ours fitted cost a lot more than a less well-off family would be able to afford. They pay for themselves eventually, though.

Geothermal and damming? They put water pipes down into the ground, water is heated by the mantle and I think steam generated from the water is used in turbines to generate electricity.

Yup, except that they don't go anywhere near as deep as the mantle. It works best in areas with a high level of geothermal activity (i.e. volcano zones), which is why Iceland is particularly advanced. In the UK, they would have to drill a couple of miles further down to get an effective system.

I kinda wish glen beck would run for president, he is probably the only american willing to stand up to the government, and make it into a new one, kicking out the old and putting in good people, and would show how dumb some common ideas are, and place his own into action and save the usa better than mccain would
