This has been tried before. While states are technically allowed some leeway in determining drinking ages, in practice the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 slashes federal highway funding to any state that sets it below 21. It seems a little spiteful (Won't reduce drunk drivers on your roads? We'll make your roads even worse!) but nobody ever accused legislation of being sensible. |

I already heard about this as well. A lot of college Presidents jumped on board with the idea because they hate the fact that is so much drinking on campus due to the age 21 drinking law. The law actually has some sense to it, the United States is one of the only countries in the world with such a high drinking age. The thing is, there are many problems associated with drinking that won't be solved just by lowering the age. |

Funny you should mention that because there's suggestions in the UK to raise the age you are allowed to buy alcohol to 21 (which I support). However, drinking in the UK, specifically England, has very strange laws around it. In England you are allowed to by an alcoholic drink if you have it with an accompanying meal. You may have alcohol bought for you in a pub from the age of 14 but you have to be 18 to buy it for yourself. The law in England states you are allowed to drink alcohol at home from the age of 5. (This is due to beer being the safest thing to drink in the 17th century-plague-ridden England). |

In some Canadian provinces the age is already 18. In my province it's 19. Two more years until I can drink legally here... |

i think that maybe they should allow SOME alcohol to be CONSUMED at age 18 but with parent consent and parent buying or some sort of family member. That way the parents know about it and they can talk to their kids about it. beer was a savior back then, not even water was safe! Beer also is kind of healthy.

No, thats silly KK. When you turn 18 in the eyes of the government your an independent adult. So your smart and mature enough to fight for your country, smoke, consent to sex, and vote, you should be able to drink...but thats just me |

They are not mature enough to drink, but they are mature enough to vote in elections and risk their lives in war? If our country expects people to risk there lives at the age of 18 in an event of a crisis, surely they should allow people to consume alcohol. |

I believe that's how the U.S. drinking age got to be 18 in the first place. Wars. They should definitely let the drinking age be 18. I agree with Blue-Eyed Fin. |

Alcohol is banned for military personnel while they are on active duty. |

the point remains valid. Alcohol reduces the brains mental capabilities and that is not good for our military. If they want to fight well or be a good sailor they need to be quick thinking and smart. Alcohol may have some benefits but severe alcoholism following battles could occur and it would put strain on the military. I still stand by my idea of allowing alcohol to be consumed at age 18 but only with supervision from an elder who is a relative and guardian. That way the parents know about it and can talk to their kids about it so it does not go into a bad mix with parties and other bad things. Drunk driving is horrible. In idaho it's really bad, one time a baby and a mom got murdered by some pompice jacka$$ s.o.b drunk driver. Parents need an active role to help the teens make the right choices in life lest innocent life be lost. |

Well, in Australia you can buy alcohol when you're 18 (ouzo, vodka, beer, wine, whatever), there's no laws about underage drinking on private property and we're fine. ![]() And yes drink driving is very dumb. EDIT: I know one guy who goes hunting while he drinks... so that's booze, driving and firearms mixed together... he once invited me out and I didn't go, for obvious reasons. |

I support this purely for the fact turn 21 this year ![]() Nah, I do support it though. No where else in the world have I seen drinking have such a negative consequence as here in UK. On weekends it gets violent with alcohol and about 90% of the trouble starts with 18 - 21 years old who can't hold their drink and think they're hard...you know, until they try taking on a moving bus... |
