At about 7pm tonight, while I was settling down for an evening of doing absolutely nothing, I flipped through the local newspaper and saw that a video rental shop that sells albums on the side had Judas Priest's new album, Nostradamus, in stock. Considering that I've spent the last month in Hicksville, South Australia, I wasn't expecting to get this album until I got back to Adelaide, but here was my chance to get it now. This album had been declared a concept album by the band, focusing on the life of Nostradamus. Concept albums need great lyrics to work well (i.e. Operation:Mindcrime by Queensryche) but good lyrics on Priest albums are happy accidents more than anything else. But would this album be different? Would my faith in the Metal Gods, the Priest, be rewarded? As I handed over $29 for the album, I was struck by the darkness of the album cover... uh oh, Judas Priest are trying to be "dark" and "epic" and somehow managed “corny”. I guess I should have stopped right there, but my mind kept reminding me "this is PRIEST, man! These guys created metal as we know it!". I got home quickly, sat down in the lounge room with my Discman and my headphones, and the synths started up immediately. Promising at first, it became apparent that when Priest googled "concept album", the first hit was "eight minute songs featuring synths, string quartets and Sinatra-like crooning vocals". Tip number one: stop rhyming "fire" with "desire". We've heard it before. And where are the guitar solos? The lyrics were banal in the extreme. The synths washed everything out and there were about three guitar solos on the first part of the album, each small enough to be missed if not listened for carefully. Tip number two: make sure the songs sound well on their own, even if it is a concept album. And make sure we can tell when the songs start and end. Queensryche's Operation:Mindcrime was a fantastic album: quality lyrics, guitar solos and quality guitar shredding everywhere, and Geoff Tate used his vocal abilities to the maximum. The concept part of the album was just the icing on the cake. Not so with Nostradamus: the album is basically a huge chunk of music that's been cut up into bite sized pieces, known as "songs". Halford can sing like there's no tomorrow, but on here he's restricted to the occasional wail and that's it. For the record, this album is spread over two CDs... I only bothered to listen to the first. An utter piece of rubbish. No direction, no guts, no intensity. While their classic albums (among them Stained Class, British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance) flowed beautifully, this emotion on this album is forced. Rating: \m/ Rating system: \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ - top stuff \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ - quality \m/ \m/ \m/ - not bad \m/ \m/ - ok \m/ - yuck - why man, why?

Thanks Pez, I will have to pass this information on to the BF. (It will save him a few bucks to purchase something else that is heavy metal worthy)

I don't know much about Testament or Seduce but I would love to see Heaven and Hell (considering its Black Sabbath's 1980 line-up), Motorhead and, of course, Priest. ![]() Just couldn't resist posting this photo. ![]()

![]() What did he think about Preist's performance. I heard that they were going to play their entire "Notradamus" album.
